The heating and air conditioning systems ventilate and heat the vehicle interi-
or. The air conditioning system also cools and dehumidifies the vehicle interior.
The heating effect is dependent upon the coolant temperature, thus full heat
output only occurs when the engine has reached its operating temperature.
The heating and air conditioning systems only operate when the ignition is
switched on.
The cooling system operates only if the following conditions are met. The cooling system is switched on.
The engine is running.
The outside temperature is above approximately +2 °C.
The blower is switched on.
If the cooling system is switched on, the temperature and air humidity drops in the vehicle. The cooling system prevents the windows from misting up during
winter months.
It is possible to briefly activate re-circulated air mode to enhance the cooling
effect » page 97 .
Health protection
To reduce health risks (e.g. common colds), the following instructions for the
use of the cooling system are to be observed. ▶ The difference between the indoor temperature and the outdoor air temper-
ature should not be greater than about 5 ° C.
▶ The cooling system is to be turned off about 10 minutes before the end of
the journey.
▶ Once a year, have the manual air conditioner or Climatronic system disinfec-
ted by a specialist company.WARNING■ For your own safety and that of other road users, ensure that all the win-
dows are free of ice, snow and misting. The blower should always be on to
prevent the windows from misting up.■
Under certain circumstances, air at a temperature of about 5 °C can flow
out of the vents when the cooling system is switched on.
CAUTION
■ The air inlet in front of the windscreen must be free (e.g. of ice, snow or
leaves) to ensure that the heating and cooling system operates properly.■
After switching on the cooling system condensation from the evaporator of
the air conditioning may drip down and form a puddle below the vehicle. This is
not a leak!
■
If the coolant temperature is too high, the cooling system is switched off to
ensure that the engine cools down.

Switch the cooling system on/off
Information on cooling system
The cooling system operates only if the following conditions are met
» page 95 .
The warning light in the 
» Fig. 117 button lights up after activation, even if
some of the conditions for the function of the cooling system have not been
met. The operational readiness of the cooling system is indicated by the indi-
cator light in the button lighting up.
If recirculated air mode is turned to position  when the blower is on, the
cooling system is switched on. The cooling system is switched off again by
turning the air distribution control out of the position  .
ABCIf recirculated air mode is outside position
 when the recirculating air mode
is on, the cooling system is switched on.
Note
During operation of the manual air conditioning, an increase in engine idle
speed may occur under certain circumstances in order to ensure sufficient
heating comfort.

Climatronic in automatic mode ensures the best-possible setting of the tem-
perature of the outflowing air, the blower stage and air distribution.
Individual functions can be set or switched on by turning the dial or pressing the corresponding button. When this function is switched on, the correspond-
ing icon appears in the display.

Set blower speed
Set the fan speed (the set fan speed is indicated by the corresponding
number of segments in the display)
▶ Rotate left: reduce speed until you switch off the Climatronic
▶ Rotate right: increase speed

is switched on, the warning light illuminates in the button

Switch the cooling system on/off
After the cooling system is switched off, only the ventilation function remains active, whereby the lowest temperature that can be reached is the outside
temperature.
Set the temperature
The temperature can be set between +16 °C and +29 °C. The temperature is
regulated automatically within this range.
If  illuminates in the display, then the Climatronic works with
maximum cool-
ing (temperature setting below +16 °C).
If  illuminates in the display, then the Climatronic works with
maximum heat-
ing (temperature setting above +29 °C).
There is no automatic temperature control in the two end positions.
Switching between Celsius and Fahrenheit
Press buttons and
 simultaneously and hold for about 2 seconds.

WARNING■
Do not switch off the Climatronic system for longer than necessary.■Switch on the Climatronic system as soon as the windows mist up.
CAUTION
Do not cover the interior temperature sensor 11 » Fig. 118 as this could impair
the functioning of the Climatronic.91011Note■ As soon as the windscreen mists up, press the symbol button . Press the
 button once the windscreen has demisted.■
During operation of the Climatronic, under certain circumstances an increase
in engine idle speed can occur in order to ensure adequate heating comfort.
Climatronic - automatic operation

The automatic mode is used in order to maintain a constant temperature andto demist the windows in the interior of the car.
To switch on press the

Automatic mode can be switched off by pressing any of the air distribution
buttons or by increasing/decreasing the blower speed. The temperature is
nevertheless regulated.
Recirculated air mode

The recirculation mode prevents contaminated outside air getting into the in-
terior of the vehicle.
In recirculated air mode air is sucked out of the interior of the vehicle and then
fed back into the interior.
Switching on/off

Heater
Recirculated air mode is switched off automatically if the following conditions
are met.
The blower is switched on.
The airflow adjuster is in position . 

Individually controlled air conditioning
Recirculated air mode is switched on automatically if the following conditions

Climatronic
Depending on the moisture conditions in the vehicle interior, the air recircula-
tion may shut-down automatically .WARNINGThe recirculation system cannot be switched on for a longer period of time,
because there is no supply of fresh air from the outside. “Stale air” may re-
sult in fatigue in the driver and occupants, reduce attention levels and also
cause the windows to mist up. The risk of having an accident increases.
Switch off recirculated air mode as soon as the windows start to mist up.
CAUTION
We recommend not smoking in the vehicle when the recirculating air operation
is switched on. The smoke sucked from inside the vehicle is deposited on the
evaporator of the air conditioner. This produces a permanent odour when the
air conditioning system is operating which can only be eliminated through con-
siderable effort and expense (replacement of compressor).Air outlet ventsFig. 119

The direction of airflow can be adjusted using the air outlet vents 3, 4
» Fig. 119 , the outlets can be opened and closed individually.

Starting and stopping the engine using the key
Introduction
This chapter contains information on the following subjects:

With the key in the ignition, the ignition can be switched on and off and the
engine can be started / stopped.
WARNING■ While driving with the engine stopped, the ignition must always be
switched on » page 101, Turn ignition on / off and start the engine .
■ With the ignition off, the steering may lock » page 100 - danger of an
accident!■
Do not withdraw the ignition key from the ignition lock until the vehicle
has come to a stop » page 108, Parking . Otherwise, the steering may lock -
danger of an accident!
■
Never leave the key in the vehicle when you exit the vehicle. Unauthor-
ized persons such as children could lock the car, turn on the ignition or start
the engine -risk of injury, accidents and damage!
■
Never leave the vehicle unattended with the engine running - risk of acci-
dent, damage or theft!
■
Never switch off the engine before the vehicle has come to a halt – risk of
accident.
WARNING■ Never (e.g. in garages) run the engine in a closed place - risk of poisoning
and death!■
Do not leave any items (e.g. cleaning cloths or tools) in the engine com-
partment. There is a fire hazard and the risk of engine damage.
■
Never cover the engine with additional insulation material (e.g. with a
blanket) – risk of fire.
CAUTION■ Only start the engine when the engine and the vehicle are stationary - risk of
starter and engine damage!■
Do not push-start the engine – there is a risk of damaging the engine and
the catalytic converter. The battery from another vehicle can be used as a
jump-start aid » page 174.
Note
Do not warm up the engine while the vehicle is stationary. If possible, start
your journey as soon as the engine has started. The engine reaches its operat-
ing temperature faster this way.
Electronic immobilizer
Read and observe
and on page 100 first.
The electronic immobiliser (hereinafter referred to as "immobiliser") makes apossible attempted theft or unauthorized use of your vehicle more difficult.
An electronic chip is integrated in the head of the key. The immobiliser is deac-
tivated with the aid of this chip when the key is inserted in the ignition lock.
As soon as the ignition key is removed from the ignition lock the immobiliser is
automatically activated.
Operational problems
If a component in the immobiliser key fails, it is not possible to start the en-
gine. A corresponding message appears in the display of the instrument clus-
ter to explain the immobiliser is active.
To start, use the other vehicle key or seek help from a specialist garage.
Steering lock locking / unlocking

The steering lock (steering lock) deters any attempted theft of your vehicle.
Locking

Withdraw the ignition key.
›
Turn the steering wheel to the left or right until the steering lock clicks into
place.

Insert the key into the ignition lock. 

The steering column lock is unlocked.
If the ignition switch cannot be turned on, turn the steering wheel back and forth slightly to unlock the steering lock.

Procedure for starting the engine

Firmly apply the handbrake.
›
For vehicles with manual transmission , shift gear lever to neutral, depress
the clutch pedal and hold it there until the engine starts.
›
On vehicles with automatic transmission , place the selector lever in position
P or N and depress the brake pedal until the engine starts.
›
Turn the key into position

as far as it will go - the engine's starting proce-
dure will commence (do not touch the accelerator).
›
Release the key, the engine will start automatically.
After letting go, the vehicle key will return to position
2
.
123If the engine does not start within 10 seconds, turn the key to position 1. Re-
peat the start-up process after approx. half a minute.
For vehicles with diesel engines the glow plug warning light 
goes on during
starting. The engine can be started after the indicator light goes out.
Note
■ The engine running noises may at first be louder for a short time after start-
ing the cold engine. This is quite normal and is not an operating problem.■
You should not switch on any major electrical components during the heat-
ing period otherwise the vehicle battery will be drained unnecessarily.

The engine and the ignition are switched off simultaneously.
For vehicles with automatic transmission, the ignition key can only be removed if the selector lever is in position P .
CAUTION
Do not switch the engine off immediately at the end of your journey after the
engine has been operated over a prolonged period at high loads but leave it to
run at an idling speed for about 1 minute. This prevents any possible accumula-
tion of heat when the engine is switched off.
Note
The radiator fan can intermittently continue to run for approximately 10 mi-

The ignition can be switched on and off and the engine can be started / stop-

The key must be in the vehicle to unlock the steering, start the vehicle and
drive.
WARNING■ Never leave the key in the vehicle when you exit the vehicle. Unauthor-
ized persons such as children could lock the car, turn on the ignition or start
the engine -risk of injury, accidents and damage!■

Switch off the engine.

Open the driver door.
The steering lock is locked automatically.
If the driver's door is opened and the ignition is switched off afterwards, the
steering is only locked after the vehicle has been locked.
Unlocking

Open the driver's door and get into the vehicle.
›
Close the driver's door.
The steering is locked automatically.
Under certain circumstances (e.g. after switching off the ignition and opening
the driver's door), the steering is enabled only when the ignition is switched on
or the engine is started.
