BRAKE /((J)) Brake system
The light i llum inates when the ignition is
switched on. It goes out after the engine has been started . Th is indicates that the brake
warn ing light is functioning properly .
If the brake wa rning light doe s not light up

If the brake system warning/ind icator light
turns on, there is a brake system malfunction.

check if you can release the
parking brake. After releasing the parking
brake, carefully drive to your authorized
Audi dea ler immediately to have the ma l­
function correc ted. If you cannot release the
parking brake, seek professional assistance.
- If the ind icator light and the message ap ­
pear
w hile d riving , the emergency brak ing
function may not be available. It may not be
possible to set the park ing b rake or release
it once it has been set . Seek profess ional as­
sistance .

A WARNING
-Always observe the warn ings in

and checking the brake flu id.
- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety
ha zard . Stop the car and get professiona l
assis tance.
- I f the
1111 (USA models) ;II (Canada
models) brake system ind icator light
turns on together with the ABS and ESC
indicator lights, the ABS/ESC regulating
function may have failed. Functions that
stabilize the vehicle are no longer avai la­
ble. This could cause the vehicle to
swerve and increase the r isk of slid ing .
Drive carefully to the nearest authorized
Aud i deale r or other q ualified workshop
and have the malfunction corrected .
- If the brake warning/ind icator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
pa rking brake is re leased, or lights up
while you are dr iving, t he f lu id leve l in
the brake fl uid reservo ir is too low. If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immediate ly at low speed to the nearest

& WARNING
To reduce the risk of injury when an airbag
inf lates, a lways wear safety belts properly.
- If you are unrestrained, lean ing forward,
sitting sideways or out of position in any
way, your risk of injury is much hig her .
- You w ill also receive serio us in juries and
cou ld even be killed if you are up against
the a irbag or too close to it when it in­
fla tes -even with an Advanced Airbag
~ page 131.
More important things to know about
front airbags

Safety belts are impo rtant to help keep front
seat occupants in the proper seated pos ition
so that airbags can unfo ld prope rly and pro­
vide supp lement al protection in a front al col­
lision.
Th e front a irbags are designed to provide ad­
d itiona l prote ct io n for the chest a nd face of
the dr iver and the fr ont seat passenge r whe n:
- safety belts are worn properly,
- the seats have been posit ioned so that the
occupant is properly seated as far as possi­
ble from t he a irbag,
- and the head rest raints have been properly
adjusted .
Because airbags inflate in the blink of an eye
with great force, things you have on your lap
or have placed on the seat could become dan ­
ge ro us projectiles, an d be pushed into yo u if
the airbag inflates.
When an a irbag deploys, fine dust is released.
This is normal and is not caused by a fire in the vehicle
. This dust is made up mostly of a
powde r used to lubricate the airbags as they
deploy.
It could irr itate sk in.
It is impo rtant to remember th at w hile the
s u pplementa l airbag system is designed to re­
duce the like lihood of serious injuries, other
i njur ies, for examp le swelling, br uis ing and
minor abrasions, can a lso happen when air­
bags inflate. A irbags do not protect the arms
o r the lowe r parts of the body . Front a irbags
o nly supp lement the three point safe ty belts
in some fronta l collisions in wh ich the vehicle
deceleration is h igh enough to deploy the air ­
bags.
Front airbags will not deploy:
- if the ignition is sw itched off whe n a crash
occ urs,
- in side co llisions,
- in rear-end co llisions,
- in rollovers,
- when t he crash decelerat ion meas ured by
the airbag system is less than the min imum
threshold needed for a irbag deployment as
reg istered by the electronic contro l unit .
The front passenger airbag will also not
deploy:
- when the front passenger seat is not occ u­
pied,
- when the weight on the front passenger
seat as sensed by the Advanced Airbag Sys­
tem indicates that the fr ont a irbag on the
passe nger side has to be turned off by the
elect ronic control un it (the
PA SSENGER AIR
BAG OFF
li ght comes on and stays o n).

Sitting in the wrong pos ition can incr ease
t he r isk of se rio us i njury in crashes.
- To r educe t he risk of inju ry w he n the air ­

Before opening the engine hood, make sure
that the windshield w ipers are flat against the
windshield. Otherwise, they could damage the
paint on the hood.

the struts is reduced .

A hood that is not comple tely latched
could fly up and b lock your view while dr iv­
ing.
- When you close the engine hood, chec k it
to make sure the safety catch has p ro pe r­
ly engaged . The hood sho uld be flush
with the surrounding vehicle body parts .
-If you notice while driv ing that the hood
is not secured prope rly, stop at once and
close it.
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the engine compartment .
Whenever yo u mu st p erform an y w or k in th e
eng in e compa rtment, for example checking
and filling differ ent fluid s, there i s a ri sk of
injury , burns and accidents. To prevent per­

Safety compliance sticker
The safety compliance sticker is your assur­
ance that your new vehicle complies with all
applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety
Standards which were in effect at the time the
vehicle was manufactured . You can find this
sticker on the door jamb on the driver's side.
It shows the month and year of production
and the vehicle identification number of your
vehicle (perforation) as well as the Gross Vehi­
cle Weight Rating (GVWR) and the Gross Ax le
Weight Rating (GAWR) .
High voltage warning label
The high voltage warning label is located in
the engine compartment next to the engine hood release. The spark ign ition system com­
plies with the Canadian standard ICES-002 .
Weights
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), and
the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) for
front and rear are listed on a sticker on the
door jamb on the driver's s ide .
The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating includes the
weight of the basic vehicle plus full fuel tank,
oil and coo lan t, plus maximum load , which in­
cludes passenger we ight (150 lbs/68 kg per
designated seating position) and luggage
