minum brief case) which

nal. Electronic devices such as cell phones can
also interfere with the radio signal.
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears if you press the I START !
button to start the engine and do not depress
the brake pedal. The engine can only be start­
ed if the brake pedal is depressed .
Engage Nor P to start engine
This message appears when the engine is
started if the selector lever for the automatic
transmission is not in the P or N position. The
engine can only be started with the selector in
these positions.
!I Key not in vehicle
This message appears along with the !J! sym­
bol if the master key is removed from the ve­
hicle with the engine running .
It is intended
to remind you (e.g. when changing drivers) not to continue the journey without the mas­
ter key .
If the master key is no longer in the vehicle,
you cannot switch off the ignition after stop­ ping the engine and you also cannot start the
engine again. Moreover, you cannot lock the
veh icle from the outside with the key.
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if you are not in P.
This message appears for safety reasons
along w ith a warning buzzer if the selector
lever for the automatic transmission is not in
the P pos ition when the ignit ion is switched
off with the
ISTOPI button and the dr iver's
door is opened. Move the se lector lever to the
P position, otherwise the vehicle is not se ­
cured against rolling away . You a lso cannot
lock the vehicle using the lock ing button on
the door hand le or using the remote key.

To engage steering lock, press and hold
STOP button
This message appears for safety reasons if the
engine and the ignition have been switched
off by pressing the
I STOPI button once, and
then the driver's door is opened. In this in­
stance, the steering is not locked . The steer ­
ing is locked:
- If you press the
IS TOPI button again for
more than 1 second.
- If you close the driver's door and lock your
veh icle from the outside.
Parking brake
Operation
The parking brake replaces the handbrake .

ter you have dr iven for longer than 3 seconds
and faster than 5 mph (5 km/h) . .,._

(CON) illuminates when the parking brake is
set and you switch on the ignition.
A WARNING
-
Always release the parking brake com­
pletely. A partially engaged brake will
overheat the rear brakes, reduce their ef­
fectiveness and cause excessive wear . This
could lead to brake failure and an accident .

Only after the vehicle has come to com­
plete stop, should you firmly set the park­
ing brake and move the selector lever into
P.
Parking
• Press the brake pedal to stop the vehicle .

.. When on inclines or declines, turn the steer­
ing wheel so that the vehicle will roll into
the curb if it begins to move.
A WARNING
This is how you can reduce the risk of in­
jury when leaving your vehicle.
- Never park the vehicle where it can come
in contact with dry grass, spilled fuel or
any other flammable materials.
- When parking on hills, always turn the
wheels so that the front wheels will first
roll into the curb, if the vehicle should
start to roll.
- Never allow anyone - especially small
children - to remain in the vehicle when
it is locked. Locked doors make it more
difficult for rescuers to access the pas­
senger compartment in the event of an
emergency. Danger to life!
- Never leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle. Children could release the park­
ing brake or move the gearshift lever out
-
of gear. The vehicle could start to roll
away and cause an accident.
- No matter what the season is, the tem­
perature in a parked vehicle can reach
dangerous levels.
Q) Note
- Please exercise care when you park your
vehicle in parking areas with parking bar­
riers or curbs. Parking barriers and curbs
vary in height and could damage your
bumper and related components as the
front of your vehicle moves over a barrier
or curb that is too high, as you park or as
you back out of a parking spot. In order
to be sure that no such damage can oc­
cur, you may wish to stop short of having
the front tires of your car touch the park­
ing barrier or curb.
- Please also exercise exceptional care
when you drive up or down steep ramps
or drive over curbs or other obstacles, for
which the vehicle is not designed, be­
cause components of th@ vehicle close to
the ground, such as bumper covers,
spoilers and suspension and exhaust sys­
tem components, may become dam­
aged.
Starting on hills
Hill Hold makes it easier to start on hills.
The system is activated when the brake pedal
is depressed
for a few seconds . For this, the
vehicle must be standing in uphill driving di­ rection.
After releasing the brake pedal, the brake power is held for a
brief moment to prevent
the vehicle from rolling back when starting. At
this time, you can easily begin to move your
vehicle .
A WARNING
- If you did not begin moving immediately
after releasing the brake pedal, under
certain circumstances, the vehicle would
begin to roll backward. Depress the ..,.

brake pedal immediately or engage the
parking brake.
- Should the engine stall, depress the
brake pedal immediately or engage the
parking brake.
- In order to prevent the vehicle from roll­
ing back unintentionally when starting in
stop-and-go traffic, keep the brake pedal
depressed for a few seconds before driv­
ing off .
- When you leave the vehicle - even if only
briefly -, sw itch off the ignition and
make sure to remove the ignition key . Al­
so engage the
park ing br ake to prevent
your vehicle from rolling u nintentionally.
Th is parti cularly applies if chi ldren are
left in the vehicle - danger of accident!
Cruise control
Switching the system on
Th e cruise control syst em makes it possible to
drive at a constant speed starting at
20 mph
(30kmlh).

A WARNING
- Always pay attention to traffic even when
the cruise control is switched on. You are
always responsible for your speed and
the distance between your veh icle and
other veh icles .
- For safety reasons, the cruise control
should not be used in the city, in stop­
and-go traffic, on twisting roads and
when road conditions are poor (such as
ice, fog , gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
p laning) - risk of accident.
- Turn off the cruise control temporarily
when en ter ing turn lanes, highway exit
lanes or in construction zones .
- Please note that inadvertently "resting"
your foot on the accelerator pedal causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is because the cruise control is overridden
by the driver's acceleration.
- Never use the cruise control when driving
off-road o r on unpaved roads. The cruise
control is intended for use only when the
vehicle is being operated on paved roads,
and is not suitable for use off-road or on
unpaved roads .
(D Tips
The cruise control cannot maintain a con­
stant speed when driving downhill. The ve­
hicle will accelerate under its own weight .
Downshift to a lower gear or use the
brakes to slow down.
Changing speed

the lever in the
0 10 direction unti l the de­
s ired speed is displayed.
You can a lso press the accelerator pedal down
to increase your speed , e .g. if you want to
pass someone . The speed yo u saved earlier
will resume as soon as you release the acceler ­
ator pedal.
If , however, you exceed your saved speed by
5 mph (10 km/h) for longer than 5 minutes ,
the cruise contro l will turn off temporarily .
The symbol will go out but the saved speed
will be retained.
Presetting your speed
You con preset your desired speed while the
vehicle is not moving.
• Turn on the ignition.
• Pull lever into position

• Press the lever in the 0 or O direction to
increase or decrease you r speed .
• Release the lever to save that speed .
This funct ion makes it possible, for example,
to save the speed you want before driving on
the highway . Once o n the hig hway, activate
the cruise contro l by pulling the lever toward
(D .
Switching the system off
Temporary deactivation
• Press the b ra ke peda l, or
• Press the lever into pos it ion @ (not clicked
into p lace)

• Drive for longer than 5 minutes at more
than 5 mph (10 km/h) above the stored

Switching off completely

Description
Applies to vehicles: with adaptive cruise cont rol
The adaptive cruise control driver assistance
program is a combined speed and distance
control system .

Adapt ive cruise control can he lp ma ke driv ing
more relaxed and less tiri ng , particularly dur­
in g long trips on inters tates or other hig hways
that are genera lly st raight. The sys tem can al­
so ass ist in stop and go traffic .
The adap tive cruise co ntrol wor ks within a
spee d range be tween 0 and 95 mph (150 km/
h ). Set ACC to maintain a constant, legal trav ­
e l speed between 20 and 95 mph (30 -150
km/h) that is appropriate for prevailing traff ic
conditions. Select a following distance to the
veh icle ahead and ACC will adjust your speed
to maintain that d istance down to a stop . At a
speed below 20 mph (30 km/h), the min imum
speed setting of 20 mph (30 km/h) will be se­ l ected a utomati ca lly.
Adapt ive cruise control has technical limita­
tions that you must know, so p lease read th is
section carefully , understand how the system
wo rks and use it properly at a ll times.
How does it work?
You can operate the adaptive cruise control
usi ng the lever on the steering wheel column

What is important for you to know
The adaptive cru ise cont ro l is set w ith system­
spe cified lim its; that is, as a driver, you will
have to adjus t the speed and d istance to the
vehicle ahead in some instances

System limitations .
A WARNING
Improper use of the adaptive cruise con­
trol can cause collisions, other accidents
and se rious personal injury.
- Always remember that the adaptive cru ise contro l has limits -it will not slow
the vehicle down or ma inta in the set d is ­
tance when you dr ive towards an obsta­
cle or someth ing o n or nea r the road that
is not mov ing, such as ve hicles stopped
in a tra ffic jam, a sta lled or d is ab led vehi­
cle.
- Always remembe r that the adaptive
cru ise con tro l canno t detect a vehi cle
that is driving towards yo u in your traff ic
lane and that it cannot detect narrow
veh icles s uch as motorcycles and bicy­
cles.
- Never drive at speeds that are too fast
for traffic, road and weather conditions.
- Never follow a vehicle so closely that yo u
cannot stop yo ur vehicle safely . The
adaptive cr uise control cannot s low or
brake the vehicle safely when you follow
a nother vehicle too close ly. Always re­
membe r that the adaptive cruise control
has a braking powe r th at is o nly about
3 0% of the veh icle 's maxim um braking
abil ity. T he a uto mat ic br ak in g f unctio n
canno t bri ng the veh icle to a s udden or
emergency sto p. Always be prepared to

brake and take evasive action to avoid
collisions and other accident situations.
- Never allow the closing speed between
you and other vehicles to be so high that
the adaptive cruise control may not be
able to slow your vehicle safely. If clos­
ing speed is too high, you must apply the
brakes yourself to reduce the risk of a
rear-end crash .
- Never rest your foot on the accelerator peda l, especia lly when the adaptive
cruise control is be ing used. Pressu re on
the accelerator w ill override the ACC
braking function and prevent the brakes
from being applied when ACC detects a situation when the brakes must be ap­
plied.
- Never use adaptive cruise contro l when
you cannot drive safe ly at a steady
speed, including on city streets, on wind­
ing roads or when road conditions are
poor (for example, on ice, gravel, in fog,
heavy rain or on wet roads that increase
the risk of hydroplaning) .
- The radar sensor 's
vision can be reduced
by rain, snow and heavy road spray .
T hese and sim ilar condit ions can prevent
vehicles up a head from being accurately
detected and in some cases they may not
be detected at al l. Do not use ACC when
the radar sensors cannot accurately de­
tect vehicles moving ahead of yo u in traf­
fic .
- Always turn off adaptive cruise contro l
when entering turn lanes , exit lanes and
construction zones or in similar situa­
t ions because the vehicle will automati­
cally accelerate to the stored speed when
the road ahead is clear.
- To prevent unintended operation, always
switch ACC off when it is not be ing used .
(D Tips
-For safety reasons, the stored speed is
deleted when the ignition is turned off .
- The E lectronic Stab ilizat ion Control (ESC)
i s automatically turned on when the
adaptive cruise control is turned on. You cannot switch the ESC into offroad mode
w hile the adaptive cruise contro l is
t u rned on

-Damage caused by accidents and some
mino r collisions can affect the radar sen­
sor settings and cause the system to
malf unction or switch off completely.
- The radar sensor cover is heated. In win ­
ter conditions, you should st ill check be­
fore dr iv ing to make sure it is free of ice
and snow. If necessary, clean the area
near the radar sensor carefully

How does adaptive cruise control work?

the aid of a radar sensor.

If the vehicle in front accelerates, adaptive
cru ise control also accelerates up to the speed
that you have set.
I f the vehicle ahead slows to a stop, ACC will
slow yo ur vehicle down and to a complete
stop if this is possible w ith in the system's lim­
its and capabilities. ACC will not make an
emergency stop . The text message
ACC off:
manual control! appears in the instrument
cluster display. Once the veh icle stops, you
must dep ress the brake pedal to prevent the
veh icle from mov ing forward or "creeping" .
D epressing the brake pedal turns
off ACC.
When the vehicle ahead accelerates yo u can
reactivate ACC

Passing another vehicle
If you move into the passing lane and no ve hi­
cle is detected ahead , the adapt ive cr uise con­
trol acce le rates to the speed you have set and
maintains it.
Overr iding ACC
You can in cr ease yo ur speed at a ny time by
stepping on the accelera tor ped al. A fter you
release the accelerator peda l, the system ad­
justs back down to the speed you prev ious ly
set .
Reducing stopp ing distance
If the radar sensor detects that the d istan ce
to the vehicle a head is less than de fined m ini­
mum distance, the brakes are automatically
prepared fo r emergency braking by the d river .
The brake pads are moved very close to the brake d iscs without actually braking the vehi­
cle. This brake assistant feature reacts more
quick ly to the dr ive r's brak ing, and also works
when adapt ive cruise control is
off . The stop­
ping distance is reduced as a result of th is ad­
vance brake p reparation . Th is fun ction does
not perform any emergency b rak ing mane u­
vers by itse lf; the dr iver mus t always apply the
brakes.
A WARNING
If ACC initiates a braking maneuver, the brake pedal w ill be retracted. Inter ference
with the brake peda l can prevent ACC from
slowing the veh icle down and cause a
crash and serious personal injury.
- Never put anything in the driver's foot­
well or let anyth ing fall into it. An object
in the driver's footwe ll can inte rfe re with
the peda ls and prevent the acce le rator
from being used to override ACC or pre­
vent ACC from being switched
off when
the brake pedal is depressed and also
prevent the vehicle from being slowed
down or stopped .
- Onl y use floor mats that keep the area
aroun d the peda ls free and that can be
securely fastened to the footwell .

A WARNING
- Never rely on the distance control fea­
ture of ACC alone to prevent rear-end col­
lisions . Always be prepared to brake and
take evasive action to avoid collisions and other acc ident situations.
- Never allow the clos ing speed between
yo u and other vehicles to be so h igh that
the adaptive c ruise control may not be
able to slow your vehi cle safe ly. If clos ­
ing speed is too high, you m ust app ly the
brakes yourself to reduce the risk of a
rear-end crash.

pends on the Distance setting selected .
DISTANCE 1 g ives you acce lerat ion that is
dynamic and sporty. DISTANCE 4, on the
other hand, gives more moderate acce lera­
tion. For more information about the time

-Please note that if the adaptive cruise
control has begun braking the vehicle
and the d river chooses to brake the vehi­
cle add itiona lly, t he b rakes may fee l
"h ard". This is simply due to the pressure
b uild- up of the initial b raking.
- Adaptive cruise control is sw itched off af­
te r pressing the footbrake. The speed
saved u p this poin t can be resumed. To
res ume the saved speed, release the

With the sy stem switched on the speed is
stored as follows:
• Dr ive at the speed you want .
.,. Press the
ISE TI button ¢ fig. 132 to store
the desired speed.
After the
ISE TI button is re leased, the current
speed is stored and maintained . If you are
driv ing at a speed below 20 mph (30 km/ h),
the minimum speed setting of 20 mph
(30 km/h) will be set .
The saved speed is now shown in the LED d is­
play in the speedometer by one or two illumi­
nated red light d iodes
