The ill umi nat ion fo r th e i nstru me nt cl uster
lights up whe never yo u switch on the i gni ­
tion with t he
vehicle headlights off . As
the daylight fades, the instrument cluster illumi nat ion likewise dims automatically
a n d w ill go out completely when t he out­
side light is very low. This feat ure is meant
to remind you to switch on the headlights
w hen o utside lig ht con dit io ns become
poor.
Engine coolant temperature gauge
The eng ine coolant gauge q page 10, fig. 3 CD
only works when the ignition is on. To p revent
damage to you r engine, please note the fol­
lowing impor tant po ints:
Engine cold
As long as the needle remains at or close to
the bottom of the gauge, the engi ne still has
not reached its operat ing temperature . Avoid
high eng ine speeds, heavy eng ine loads and
heavy th rottle a pplicat io ns.
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operat ing
temperature, the needle w ill move into the
midd le of the gauge and rema in the re. If th e
engine is worki ng ha rd at high outside tem­
peratures, the needle may rise up. This is no
need to worry as long as the. warni ng lig ht
i n the i nstr ument cluster does not ill uminate.
Warning light in the instrument cluster
When the. warning lig ht in the instr ument
cluster s tarts to flash, th is can mean one of
two things : either the coo lant
temperatur e is .,..

Speedometer with odometer
The speedometer shows you the vehicle
speed, and the odometer shows you how
many miles (kilometers) you have driven.

The odometer and trip odometer are located
inside the speedometer.
- USA mode ls - Miles
- Canada models -Kilometers
You can switch the display from miles to kilo­ meters and vice versa via the MMI. You can
find out more in the MMI manual.
Lower odometer
The lower odometer shows the total number
of mi les (kilometers) driven.
Upper odometer (trip odometer)
The upper odometer shows the tota l number
of mi les (kilometers) driven since you last re­
set the odometer to zero. You can use this od­
ometer when you want to keep track of how many miles (k ilometers) you have driven for a
single trip or errand. The last digit indicates
1/10 of a mile (100 meters).
You can reset the trip odometer to zero by
pressing the Reset button

Malfunction message
If there is a malfunction somewhere in the in­
strument cluster,
dEF will appear in the trip
odometer and will stay on. Contact your au ­
thorized Audi dealer to have the problem cor­
rected.
(D Tips
- When you open t he driver door, the time,
date and odometer are disp layed for an
add itiona l 30 seconds.
- You can also call up the display with the
I CHECK I button c> page 12 while the ig­
nition is switched off.
Fuel gauge
The fue l gauge only works when the ignition is
on .
When the needle reaches the reserve mark,
the
c> page 35 mJ symbol appears in the in­
strument cluster d isplay as well as the mes ­
sage
Please refuel. This message is meant to
remind you to
refuel.
The total tank capacity of your vehicle is listed
in
.:> page 325 .
@ Note
Never run the tank completely dry. An ir­
regular supply of fuel can cause engine
misfiring and fuel could enter the exhaust
system. The catalytic converter could then
overheat and be damaged.

can be switched on for about 30 seconds by
pressing the
I CH ECKi button ¢ fig. 6.
Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system ¢ page 30 constant­
l y monitors certai n ind iv idual funct ions and
components of the ve hicl e when the ignit ion
is t urned on and when the vehicle is moving.
W ith the ignition turned on, you can start the
"Au to-C hec k seque nce" by p res sing the
I CH ECKi button. Yo u ca n pe rform an A uto­
Check sequence when the vehi cle is stationary
and the ign ition is turned on or when the vehi­
cle is mov ing not faster than
3 mph (5 km/h).
The number of keys progr ammed to the vehi­
cle is also displayed. The disp lay
3 \3 indicates
that th ree keys have been programmed . This
allows yo u to make sure you have rece ived a ll
of the keys when you purchase a used vehicle.
F or exam ple, if you on ly receive two keys, you
should take those keys to your a uth orized
Aud i dea ler to have the miss ing key deactivat­
ed so it cannot be used. You sho uld also re­
port the m issi ng key to your insurance compa­
ny.
Calling up the driver informati on
A yellow or red symbol appears in the instru­
ment cluster display, usua lly w ith a driver
message . T he driver message display disap­
pears after about 5 seconds. The driver mes­
sage can be displayed agai n by briefly press ­
in g the
!CHECK I button.
Setting the speed warning
By pressing the ICHECK I button briefly, yo u
can set thres ho ld 1 of the speed warning
while you are driving
o page 29 . By main­
tain ing press ure on the
I CHECK I button, you
de lete th e warning threshold .
Instrument cluster illumination
The basic brightness of the illumination for
the instruments, the center console and the
display can be adjusted.

A lig ht sensor in the instrument cl uster con­
tro ls t he illumination for the instrument clus­
te r, the center conso le and the displays . In a
bright env ironment, us ing the b uttons to
c hange the brightness has no effect .
{l) Tips
The illumination for the inst rument cluster
lights up w henever you switch on the igni­
tion with the vehicle headlights off. As the
day light fades, the inst rument cluste r illu­
mination l ikewise dims automa tica lly and
will go out comp let ely when the o utsi de
li g ht is very low. T his feature is meant t o
r emi nd you t o switch on t he he adlight s
whe n outs ide lig ht con ditions become
p oor .

;;./~ Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
This warning/indicator light monitors the
Electronic Stabilization Control.
If th€ JjJ indicator light blinks wh ile driving,
the ESC or ASR (Ant i-S lip Regulation) is active­
l y regulating.
If the
DJ indicator light turns on, the system
has sw itched the ESC off . In this case, you can
switch the ignition off and then on to switch
the ESC on again. The indicator light turns off
when the system is functioning fully.
If the
II indicator light turns on, ESC was re·
stricted using the
I B OFF ! button~ page 223 .

If th€ J.i) indicator light and the ABS indicator
light
ml (USA models) ; IIJ (Canada models)
turn on and the message appears, the ABS or
electronic differential lock is malfunction ing .
This also causes the ESC to malfunct ion . The
brakes st ill function with the ir normal power,
but ABS is not act ive.
Drive to your authorized Aud i dealer or quali­
fied workshop immediately to have the mal·
function corrected.
A WARNING
If the 1111 (USA models) . (Canada
mode ls) brake system ind icator light turns
on togethe r with the ABS and ESC indica­
tor lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function
may have failed . Functions that stabilize
the vehicle are no longer avai lab le. This
could cause the vehicle to swerve and in·
crease the risk of sliding. Dr ive carefully to
the nearest authorized Aud i dea ler or oth­
er qua lified workshop and have the mal·
function corrected.

tli1 ! !r Safety systems
T he . (USA models)/ . (Canada mode ls)
i ndica tor light monito rs the safety systems
(e.g . ai rbags, pretensioners) and illuminates
for a few seconds each time you switch the ig­
nition on.
If the . (USA models)/ . (Canada models)
indicator light does not go out, or if it illumi­
nates while you are driving, or if it starts to
blink, then there is a malfunction somewhere
in the system. If the light does not illuminate
when you switch the ign ition on, th is also
means there is a malfunct ion.
A WARNING "'--
If you have a malfunction in the safety sys-
tems, contact your a uthorized Audi dea ler
i mmediately. Otherwise the safety sys­
tems may not work properly in an acc i­
dent.
¢¢ Turn signal s
The indicator light blinks when you use either
turn signal.
Whenever you use the left B or the right Ill
turn s ignal, the indicator light blinks . When
you use the emergency flashe rs, both indica­
tor lights flash .
If one of the turn signal light bulbs burn out,
the turn signal will blink twice as fast as nor· mal.
This does not apply, however, in towing mode.
The ind icator light does not flash if a turn sig·
nal is out on the tra iler or the towing veh icle .

-If the warning/indicator light flashes in con­
junction with the
Ill warning/indicator
li ght, you shou ld not drive the vehicle imme­
diately in order to prevent damage to the
underbody . The two warning/indicator
lights flash ing together po ints to an ex­
treme Low level. A very
pronounced lower­
ing
of the veh icle (ext reme Low level) can re­
sult, fo r example, from a heavy load. As
soon as the leve l has ret urned to norma l
I
the warning/indicato r lights stop flashing,
and yo u can drive away.
{[) Note
If the warn ing/ indicator light flashes in
conjunction with the
Ill warning/indicator
light, you should not drive the veh icle be­
cause low- lying vehicle parts can bottom
out as you drive over uneven ground and
be damaged as a result.
~ Safety belts
This warning/indicator light reminds you to
put on your safety belt.
The . warning/indicator lig ht ill uminates
when the ignition is sw itched on to remind
the driver and (on USA models only) any front passenger to put on the safety belt. Add ition­
ally, an acoustic warning (gong) w ill also
sound.

The II warning/indicator light illuminates
when the high beams are on or when you use
the head light flasher. For more informat ion

ill Tire pressure monitoring system -
telltale indicator lamp
The warning/indicator light appears in the
event of a significant loss of tire pressure or if there is a malfunction.
The ind icator light [IJ illuminates to check
the function w hen you switch on the ign ition.
If the
[IJ symbol remains on or blinks after
you sw itch on the ign it ion, there is a loss of
t ire p ressure or a system ma lfunction . If there
is a system ma lfunction, see your authorized
Audi dealer as soon as poss ible.

. CRUISE /''(") Cruise control
The IR;\l)~il (U SA mode ls) ,fl (Canada mod­
els) warning/indicator light i lluminates when
t h e cr uise control is activated .
ABS/(8) Anti-lock brake system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL) .
The ttl1 (USA models) /KO)l (Canada mode ls)
warning/indicator ligh t will come on for a few
seconds when the ignition is switched on. The
light will go out after an a utomatic check se ­
quence is comp leted .
There is a malfunct ion in the ABS when:
- The warning/indica tor l igh t does no t illum i­
nate when you switch on the ignition.
- The warning/indicator light does no t go o ut
after a few seconds.
- The warning/indicator light illum inates
while driving.
The brak e syst em will still respond e ven
withou t the ass istanc e of th e ABS sy stem .

Ma lfunction in th e brak e system
If the b rake warn ing light <=>page 19 and
the ABS warning i lluminate
together there
may be a ma lfunction in the ABS, and there
may a lso be a malfunct ion in the brake system
itself <=>,&. .
In the event of a
m alfun ct ion in the b rake
s ys tem
the warning/indicator light 1111
(USA models) . (Canada models) in the in ­
strument cluster flashes. By pressing the
ICHECKI button, you can bring up a driver
message which explains the malfunct ion in
more deta il. Please note
<=>page 32.
M alfunction in t he e lectronic diff erential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together with the ABS. The
ABS warning light will come on if there is a
malfunct ion in the EDL system
<=> page 223.
See your autho rized Aud i dealer as soon as
possib le.
.&, WARNING
-
- If the ml (USA models) ;tlJ (Canada
models) warning light does not go out,
or if it comes on while driving, the ABS
system is not working properly. The vehi­
cle can then be stopped only with the
standard brakes (without ABS). You will
not have the protection ABS provides.
Contact your authorized Aud i dealer as
soon as poss ible.
- If the
1111 (USA models)/ . (Canada
models) brake system indicator light
tu rns on together with the ABS and ESC
indicator ligh ts, the ABS/ESC regu lating
f unction may have failed. F unctions that
stabilize the vehicle are no longer availa­
ble. This could cause the vehicle to
swerve and increase the risk of sliding.
Drive carefully to the nearest authorized
Audi dealer or other qualified workshop and have the malfunction corrected.

The indicator light monitors the parking
brake.
When the parking brake is applied and the ig­
nition is switched on, the. (USA models) /
• (Canada models) indicator light comes on .
The ind icator light must go out when the
parking b rake is released.
BRAKE/CC Dl Brake system
The warning/indicator light flashes if brake
fluid level is low, if there is an
ABS system
ma/function or a parking brake ma/function.
The 1111 (USA models)/ . (Canada models)
light illum inates when the ignition is turned
on.
It goes out after the eng ine has been
started . This indicates that the bra ke warning
l ight is functioning properly.
If the brake w arning light d oes not light up
wh en th e eng ine i s cran king, th ere ma y be a
malfunction in the ele ct ric al sy ste m . In thi s
c ase , conta ct your Audi de aler .
If the brake system warning/indicator light
flashes, there is a b rake system ma lfunction .
By pressing the
I CH ECK i button, you can bring
up a driver message which expla ins the ma l­
function in more detai l
