When trouble arises
Steadily step on the brake pedal with both feet and firmly depress it.
Do not pump the brake pedal repeatedly as this will increase the effort
required to slow the vehicle.
Except hybrid model: Shift the shift lever to N.
Hybrid model: Change the shift position to N.
If the shift lever is shifted to N (except hybrid model)
After slowing down, stop the vehicle in a safe place by the road.
Stop the engine.
If the shift position can be changed to N (hybrid model)
After slowing down, stop the vehicle in a safe place by the road.

If the engine has to be turned off while driving (except hybrid model)
Power assist for the brakes and steering wheel will be lost, making the
brake pedal harder to depress and the steering wheel heavier to turn.
Decelerate as much as possible before turning off the engine.
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system: Never attempt to remove
the key, as doing so will lock the steering wheel.
If the hybrid system has to be turned off while driving (hybrid model)
Power assist for the brakes and steering wheel will be lost, making the
brake pedal harder to depress and the steering wheel heavier to turn.
Decelerate as much as possible before turning off the hybrid system.

7-2. Steps to take in an emergency
The following may indicate a problem with your transmission. Contact
any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional before towing.
Except hybrid model
The engine is running but the vehicle will not move.
The vehicle makes an abnormal sound.
Hybrid model
The hybrid system is operating, but the vehicle will not move.
The vehicle makes an abnormal sound.
Hybrid model: If there is a malfunction in the P position control sys-
tem, the smart entry & start system or the immobilizer system, or if the
12-volt battery is discharged, the vehicle cannot be towed with the
front wheels on the ground, as the front wheels may be locked. In this
case, transport the vehicle with both front wheels or all four wheels
lifted.
If your vehicle needs to be towed
If towing is necessary, we recommend having your vehicle
towed by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional or a commercial tow-
ing service, using a lift-type truck or flat bed truck.
Use a safety chain system for all towing, and abide by all state/
provincial and local laws.

If a tow truck is not available in an
emergency, your vehicle may be
temporarily towed using a cable or
chain secured to the emergency
towing eyelet.

only be attempted on hard sur-
faced roads for short distances at
low speeds.

Push the eyelet cover and then
open it.
Insert the towing eyelet into the
hole and tighten partially by
hand.
Tighten down the towing eyelet

If you use chains or cables to tie
down your vehicle, the angles
shaded in black must be 45.
Do not overly tighten the tie
downs or the vehicle may be dam-
aged.

Put the engine switch in the “ACC” (engine off) or “ON” position (engine
running).
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system:
Put the engine switch in ACCESSORY (engine off) or IGNITION ON
mode (engine running).
Shift the shift lever to N.
Release the parking brake.
Hybrid model
Turn the power switch to ON mode.
Do not turn the power switch to ACCESSORY mode.
Shift the shift position to N.
When the power switch is in ACCESSORY mode, the shift position can-
not be changed to N.
Release the parking brake.
