The latches must be secured on the left and right sides of the
vehicle.
- Pull the power top headliner to the side in the area around
the rear headrests to secure the latches=> fig. 65 =>
& in
"Step 2: Lift ing the power top compartment cover out" on
page 58.
- Then remove the emergency key and insert the short end
into the power top s upport at the yellow marking.
- Press the emergency key in the d irection of t he arrow
=> fig. 65

Clear vision
& WARNING
Automatic headlights are only intended to assist the driver. They
do not relieve the driver of his responsibility to check the head­
lights and to turn them on manually according to th e current light
and visibility conditions . For example, fog cannot be detected by
the light sensors. So always switch on the headlights under these
weather conditions and when driving in the dark
io.
[ i ) Tips
• The light sensor for headlight cont rol is located in the rear view
m irror mo unt. You s hou ld therefore not apply a ny st ic kers to the
windshield in th is area in order to prevent malfunct ions or fa ilures.
• T he sensitivity leve l for the light se nsor set a t the factory ca n be
changed in the MMI menu~
page 65 in the automatic driving lights

• When you remove your key from t he ign itio n while the veh icle's
lights a re tu rned on, a bu zzer sounds as long as t he driver's doo r is
open.
• Please obey a ll laws when us ing t he lig htin g systems desc ribed

• The coming home/ leav ing home function is ava ilab le only with the
switch in the AU TO position. •

Fog lights
The side marker lights or low beams must be switc hed on . W hen the
fog lights are switc hed on, the gree n check light at t he edge of the
switch co m es on.
If automat ic dr iv ing light control AUTO is activated , the low beams
a re sw itched on whe n the fog lights are t urned on.
Rear fog lights
Low beams o r side m arke r lig hts w ith fog ligh ts m ust be t urned on .
When the rear fog lig hts are tur ned on, the ye llow check lig ht at the
edge of the swi tch comes on.

- Push the lever forward to switch on the high beam.
- Pull the lever back towards you to switch off the high
beam.

- Pull the lever toward the steering whee l to use the head­
light flasher.

• The turn signals only work with the ignit ion turned on. The indi­
cato r lights ¢ or¢ in the instrument cluster also blink.
• After you have turned a corner, the turn signal switches off auto­
matically.
• The
high beam works only when the headlights are on. The indi­
cator light ~D in the instrument cluster illuminates when the high
beams are on.
• T he
headlight flasher works only as long as you hold the lever -
even if there are no lights switched on. The indicator light ~Din the
instrument cluster illuminates when you use the headlight flasher.

Do not use the high beam or headlight flasher in if you know that
these could be blinding oncoming traffic.•
Interior lights
Interior lights
The interior lights include the reading lights for the driver
and the front passenger .

- Press the button@. The LED in the button illuminates .
Deactivating door contact circuit
-Press the button@. The LED in the button goes out .
Front reading Lights ~
- Press one of the switches @ to turn the right or le ft
reading light on or off .
With the door contact circu it, the inte rior lights turn on as soon as
you un lock the vehicle or open the doors. The interior lights are also
tu rned on when the ignit ion key is removed. The lights turn off about
30 seconds after the doors are closed. When the vehicle is locked or
when the ignition is tu rned on, the interior lights are turned off.
When a door is open, the interior lights are turned off after about 10
min utes to prevent battery draining. _,.

Clear vision Heated mi rrors
- Rotate the knob to position @ .
Depend ing on the outs ide temperature, the mirror surfaces are
heated until the igni tion is sw itched off -even if the knob is no longe r
in posit io n @ .
You are we ll-advised to fold the o utside mirrors in when maneuvering
in tight spaces or when leaving the ca r pa rked close to other vehicles .
Memory for exterior mirrors*
On vehicles with memo ry fo r the d rive r's seat, the current sett ing for
the exter ior mirrors is automatically stored a long w it h the seat posi ­
tion=>
page 80 .
Tilt function for the passenger's mirror* (only with
memory for exterior mirrors)
W hen the reverse gear is engaged, the mir ror surface tilts downward
sl ightly if the setti ng is for the passenger 's mirror (knob in pos ition
® => page 73, fig. 79) . T h is allows you to see the curb during paralle l
par king.
The mirror returns to its init ial position as soon as reverse gear is
disengaged and ve hicl e speed is a bove about 9 mph (15 km/h). The
m irror also returns to its in itia l pos ition if the switch is moved to the
dr iver's ou tside mir ror © or the igni tion is sw itched off .
If the posi tion of t he mir ro r surface is changed on a ti lted mi rror, this
new position will be automat ically assigned to the remote key when
t he vehicle is ta ken ou t of reverse gear.
0 Note
Curved mirr or s urfa ces (c onvex o r sp her ica l*) increase your fie ld of
view. Remember that vehicles or other objects will appear smaller
a nd f arth er aw ay than when see n in a fla t m irror. If you use this
m irror to est imate d istances of following vehicles when changing
lanes, you co uld es timate incorre ct ly and ca u se an acciden t.
W Tips
If t here should be a ma lfunction in the elect rical system, you can still
adjust the outside mir rors by pressing the edge of the mirror .•

Automatic dimming for the outside
mirrors
The o utside mirrors dim at the same time as the ins ide mirror . When
the ignition is switched on, t he mi rrors a utomatically dim depend ing
on the a mount of light str ik ing t he m irrors (such as head lights
shining into the vehicle from the rear).
W hen the in ter io r li gh ting is switched on and whe n reverse gear is
engaged, the m irrors are switched back to their original brightness
(no t dimmed) .
& WARNING
Broken glass of automatic dimming mirror can cause electrolyte
fluid leakage. Electrolyte fluid can irritate skin, eyes , and resp ira­
tory sy stem.
• Repeated or prolonged exposure to electrolyte can cause irrita­
tion to the respiratory system, especially among people with
asthma o r other respiratory conditions . Get fresh air immediately
by leaving the vehicle or, if that is not po ssible, open window s and
doors all the way.
• If electrolyte gets into the eyes, flush them thoroughly with
large amounts of clean water fo r at least 15 minutes; medical
attention i s recommended.
• If elect rolyte contacts skin , flush affected area with clean
water for at lea st 15 minutes and then wash affected area with
soap and water; medical attention is recommended. Thoroughly
wash affected clothing and shoe s before r eu se. .,

Adjusting the curvature of the lumbar support
- Push the switch p late @forward or backward to increase
or red uce the curvature .
Adjusting the height of the lumbar support
-Push the sw itch p late @ up or down to position the curva­
ture higher or lower.

& WARNING
• Adjust the driver 's seat only when the vehicle is stationary . You
risk an accident otherw ise.
• The power adjustment for the front seat s al so works with the
ignit ion switched off or with the ignition key removed. For this
reason, children should never be left unattended in the vehicle -
they could be injured!
• Exerci se caution when adjusting the seat height . Unsupervised
or careless seat adjustment can pi nch fingers or hands causing
injuries .
• While the vehicle is mo ving , the seatba cks of the front seats
mu st not b e inclined to o far to the rear bec ause the effectiveness
of the safety belts and the airbag system is se verely compromised
- there is a ris k of injury.•
Easy entry function
The easy entry function makes it easier for the rear
passengers to enter and leave the vehicle.

Seats and storage Folding down the front seatbacks
- Lift the latch=> page 79, fig. 83.
- Tilt the seatbac k forward.
Moving the front seats forward
-Press and hold the switch@ until the seat has reached the
desired position.
Moving front seats back
- Press and hold the switch @ until the seat has reached the
des ired position. The seat stops automatically when it has
reached its starting position again .
To make it easier to enter and leave the rear seat, the seatbacks of the
front seats can be folded forward and the head restraints are auto ­
matically lowered. At the same time, the front seats can be moved
forward and back.
When the front seats a re moved forward, their orig inal position is
stored . When it is moved back, the seat automatically stops in this
posit ion. To move the seat even further back, you have to release the
switch @ and reactivate it.
T he head rest raints from the front seats, depending on the seat
height that has been set, are automatically retracted when the seat­
backs are folded down. They return to their original position again
when the seatbacks for the front seats are ra ised .
(I) Tips
With the driver's or passenger's door closed, the corresponding
switch to move the seat is inoperative.•

Memory for driver's seat
The seat adjustment settings for two drivers can be
stored using the memory buttons in the driver's door .

Seat memory
In addition to the setting for the driver's seat, the exterior rear view
mirror setting ca n be stored and reca lled through seat memory if the
vehicle is properly equipped.
Storing and recalling settings
With the help of the memory buttons 1 and 2 ~ fig. 84 the settings
for two different drivers can be stored and recalled~
page 81.
The current settings are also automatically stored on the remote
control key being used when the vehicle is locked. When the vehicle is
unlocked, the settings stored on the remote contro l key being used
are automatically recalled.
Turning seat memory on and off
If the [ ON/OFF] switch is depressed , the seat memory is inoperative.
The word
OFF in the [ ON/OFF] sw itch illuminates .
All the stored settings are retained. We recommend using the
I ON/OFF] switch and deact ivating the seat memory if the vehicle is .,

only going to be used temporarily by a driver whose settings are not
going to be stored. •

Storing and recalling settings
Before you can store or recall your settings, the [ ON/OFF]
switch on the seat memory must be engaged (not raised).
Storing settings
- Adjust the driver's seat.
- Adjust the two exterior mirrors .
- Press the
I SETI button and hold it down. In addition, press
one of the memory buttons for at least one second .
- Release the buttons. The settings are now stored under
the corr esponding memory button .
Recalling settings
- If the driver's door is open, tap the corresponding memory
button briefly .
- If the driver's door is closed , press the appropriate
memory button unt il the stored position is reached .
Successful storage is confirmed audibly and by the light in the [SET)
button illuminat ing=> page 80, fig . 84.
When the vehicle is
loc ked , the current settings are stored and
ass igned to the remote contro l key. B ut the setti ngs sto red on
memory buttons 1 to 2 are not deleted. They can be reca lled at any
time. When the vehicle is
unlo ck ed , the settings stored on the
remote control key are restored.
If your vehicle is driven by other persons using your remote control
key , you should save your individua l seat position on one of the

memory buttons. You can recall your settings again simply and
conveniently by press ing the cor responding memory button. When
the vehicle is locked, these settings are automatically re-assigned to
the remote control key and stored.

Light your c igarette from the red-hot heating coil of th e

- Return the ciga rette lighte r to its socket.
Using the socket
- Remove the cigarette lighter.
- Insert the plug of the el ectrical device into the cigarette
lighter socke t.
The so cket of the ciga re tte lighter may be used for 12-volt app liances
w ith maximum consumption of up to 100 watts, such as a flash light ,
sm all vacuum cleane r, etc.
Before you purchase any accessor ies, always read and follow the
information in =>
page 345, "Additional accessor ies and parts
replacement" .

• Use care when using the cigarette lighter . Inattentive or unsu­
per vis ed u se of the cig arette lighter can cause bu rn s - risk of
injury!
• The cigarette lighter work s when the ignition is switched off or
with the ignition key remo ved . Child ren shou ld never be left unsu­
pervised in the vehicle, or there could be ri sk of fire!
• The power outlets and therefore the electrical acce ssories
connected to them operate only with the ignition on . Improper
use of th e outlets or of electri cal accessories can lead to seriou s
i njuries or cause a fire. Fo r thi s reason , children should neve r be
left unattended in th e vehicle -they could be injur ed!
