Risk of accident and injury
The operating safety of your vehicle could be compromised if service work is carried out improp-
erly. You could lose control of the vehicle and cause an accident. Safety systems may also not
be able to protect you or others as intended.
Always have maintenance work carried out at a qualified specialist workshop. The workshop must
have the necessary specialist knowledge and tools to carry out the work required. Mercedes-
Benz recommends that you use a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre for this purpose. In particular,
work relevant to safety or on safety-related systems must be carried out at a qualified specialist
workshop. Warning and indicator lamps in switches and buttons
Problem

flashing. The seat ven-
tilation* has switched
off automatically. The on-board voltage is too low, because too many consumers are
switched on.
X Switch off consumers that are not required, e.g. rear window
heating or interior lighting.
Once the battery is sufficiently charged, the seat ventilation*
will switch back on automatically. One or all of the indica-
tor lamps in the seat
heating* button are
flashing. The seat heat-
ing* has switched off
automatically. The on-board voltage is too low, because too many consumers are
switched on.
X Switch off consumers that are not required, e.g. rear window
heating or interior lighting.
Once the battery is sufficiently charged, the seat ventilation*
will switch back on automatically. The steering wheel
heating* indicator lamp
on the lower left lever of
the steering column is
flashing. The on-board voltage is too low, because too many consumers are
switched on. The steering wheel heating* has switched off auto-
matically.
X Switch off consumers that are not required, e.g. rear window
heating or interior lighting.
Once the battery is sufficiently charged, the steering wheel
heating* will switch back on automatically. Troubleshooting

The
4 PASSENGER
AIRBAG OFF warning
lamp on the centre con-
sole is lit. A special Mercedes-Benz child seat with automatic child seat rec-
ognition has been fitted to the front-passenger seat. The front-
passenger airbag has therefore been disabled as desired.

Risk of injury
There is no child seat fitted to the front-passenger seat. The auto-
matic child seat recognition* is malfunctioning.
X Remove electronic equipment from the front-passenger seat,
for example:

R mobile phone
R cards with transponders, e.g. ski passes or access passes

Warning and indicator lamps in the instrument cluster

ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) is deactivated due to a fault. ABS
(Anti-lock Brake System) and ESP ®
(Electronic Stability Program)
and also PRE-SAFE ®
are therefore temporarily unavailable.
The brake system continues to function normally, but without the
functions listed above. Therefore, the wheels could lock if you
brake hard.
X Observe the additional messages in the multi-function display
(Y page 211).
X Drive on carefully.
X Visit a qualified specialist workshop. !
The yellow ABS
warning lamp is
lit while the
engine is run-
ning. G
Risk of accident
The on-board voltage is too low. ABS has been deactivated due to
undervoltage.
Therefore, ESP ®
, BAS and PRE-SAFE ®
are also deactivated.
The brake system continues to function normally, but without the
functions listed above. Therefore, the wheels could lock if you
brake hard.
X Switch off consumers that are not required, e.g. rear window
heating or interior lighting.
ABS will be available again as soon as the vehicle's electrical
system voltage increases. d

started using KEYLESS
GO*. The key is in the
vehicle. A door is open. Therefore, the key cannot be detected as easily.

Close the door and try to start the vehicle again. There is interference from a powerful source of radio waves.

Start your vehicle using the key in the ignition lock. Trailer towing*

Auxiliary heating/ventilation*

cle is faulty.

Change your position in relation to the vehicle, moving
closer if necessary.
X Make another attempt to switch the auxiliary heating on or
off using the remote control. © FAIL There is not enough fuel in the fuel tank, or the auxiliary heat-
ing is faulty.

X Make another attempt to switch on the auxiliary heating
using the remote control.
X Have the auxiliary heating checked at a qualified specialist
workshop. Parking up the vehicle
Problem

parked up for longer
than four weeks. The battery can be damaged through exhaustive discharge.

Disconnect the battery (Y page 273) or connect to a trickle
charger.
i Have the battery checked at a qualified specialist workshop,
e.g. a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre. The vehicle is to be left
parked up for longer
than six weeks. Damage resulting from non-use may occur if the vehicle is parked
up for long periods.

Changing a battery (key without KEY-
LESS GO*) You require a CR 2025 3 V cell battery.
X Remove the emergency key element from
the key (Y page 250). X
Press the emergency key element into the
opening in the key in the direction of
arrow ;until cover :of the battery tray
opens. Be sure that your fingers are not
stopping the cover from opening. X
Remove the cover of the battery tray.
X Repeatedly tap the key against your palm
until battery =falls out of the key.
X Insert the new battery with the positive
pole facing upwards. Use a lint-free cloth to
do so.
X Insert the front tabs of the battery tray's
cover first and then press to close it.
X Check the function of all key buttons on the
vehicle. Auxiliary heating* remote control
One 6 V pin battery, type 2CR11108 is
required. X
Prise apart the side arms of battery
cover ;and pull off battery cover ;.
X Remove old battery :.
X Insert the new battery. Observe the polarity
signs on the back of the remote control
when doing so.
X Slide battery cover ;back onto the
remote control.
X Use the remote control to check the vehi-
cle's auxiliary heating functions. Changing bulbs

i If you need assistance in changing the
bulbs, contact a qualified specialist work-
shop which has the necessary specialist
knowledge and tools to carry out the work
required. Mercedes-Benz recommends
that you use a Mercedes-Benz Service
Centre for this purpose. In particular, work
relevant to safety or on safety-related sys-
tems must be carried out at a qualified spe-
cialist workshop.
Bulbs and lamps are an important aspect of
vehicle safety. You must therefore make sure
that these function correctly at all times.
Have the headlamp settings checked regu-
larly. Only use the types of bulbs specified 254

Engine number
The engine number is stamped on the crank-
case. More information can be obtained from
any Mercedes-Benz Service Centre. Service products and capacities
Service products include the following:
R fuels (e.g. petrol, diesel)
R exhaust gas aftertreatment additive
(AdBlue ®
)
R lubricants (e.g. engine oil, transmission oil)
R coolant
R brake fluid
R windscreen washer concentrate
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you only
use products which have been tested and
specially approved by Mercedes-Benz for
your vehicle and which are listed in this
Mercedes-Benz Owner's Manual in the rele-
vant chapter since:
R parts and service products are matched.
R damage caused by the use of non-approved
service products is not covered by the
implied warranty.
You can recognise service products approved
by Mercedes-Benz by the following inscrip-
tion on the containers:
R MB-Freigabe (e.g. MB-Freigabe 229.51)
R MB Approval (e.g. MB Approval 229.51)
Other designations or recommendations that
relate to a level of quality or a specification in
accordance with an MB Sheet number (such
as MB 229.5) have not necessarily been
approved by Mercedes-Benz.
You can obtain further information from any
Mercedes-Benz Service Centre. G
Risk of injury
When handling, storing and disposing of any
service products, please observe the relevant regulations, as you could otherwise endanger
yourself and others.
Keep service products away from children.
To protect your health, do not allow service
products to come into contact with your eyes
or open wounds. See a doctor immediately if
any service product is swallowed.

Dispose of service products in an environ-
mentally-responsible manner. Fuel

Risk of explosion
Fuel is highly flammable. Fire, naked flames
and smoking are therefore prohibited when
handling fuels.
Before refuelling, turn off the engine and the
auxiliary heating *. G
Risk of injury
Do not allow fuel to come into contact with
skin or clothing.
Allowing fuels to come into direct contact with
your skin or inhaling fuel vapours is damaging
to your health.

Do not use petrol to refuel vehicles with a
diesel engine. Do not use diesel to refuel
vehicles with a petrol engine. Never mix
diesel with petrol. Even small amounts of
the wrong fuel result in damage to the
injection system. Damage resulting from
adding the wrong fuel is not covered by the
implied warranty.
