Adjusting the center head restraint
Models with a 2-section rear seat
Raise:
- Pull the head restraint up.
Lower:
- Hold down the release button behind the right head restraint support a\
nd press the head restraint down.
Models with a 3-section rear seat
Raise:
- Pull the head restraint up.
Lower:
- Pull the head restraint slightly forward and press down.

WARNING!
l Please note that the lowest head restraint position is only intended for\
use when the backrest is to
be folded down, or when the seat is not occupied.
l The head restraint is intended to help protect the head/neck in a collis\
ion. Ensure that it is properly
adjusted for the occupant of the seat.
Folding the outboard backrests down
Models with 2 or 3-section rear seat
Press the backrest catch to the rear as shown in the illustration above,\
and tilt the backrest forward.
A. Catch in closed position.
B. Catch in open position.
Models with the optional 3-section rear seat
To fold down the center section of the backrest (without folding down e\
ither of the outboard sections):

- Lower the head restraint (see previous page).
- Press the center section backrest catch to the rear and tilt the backr\
est forward.

Extending the cargo area
NOTE: Make sure that the holes in the plastic ferrules on the top of the back\
rest engage the hooks on
the bottom of the seat cushion.
When you later raise the backrest and seat cushion, the head restraints \
must be returned to their normal
positions.
WARNING!
l The red lock indicator is not visible when the backrest is correctly loc\
ked in place.
l The red lock indicator IS VISIBLE when the backrest is NOT locked in pos\
ition (see the
illustration on the previous page).
l The backrest must be securely locked when it is returned to the upright \
position. The word
"UNLOCKED" on the lock indicator should not be visible.
l When the rear seat is folded down, do not place heavy objects against th\
e backs of the front seats.
This places a severe strain on the folded down backrest of the rear seat\
.
l Be sure to secure cargo. Cargo must not be stacked higher than the top o\
f seat backs. This will
reduce the possibility of luggage, etc. becoming projectiles during sudd\
en maneuvers, rapid braking
or an accident.

Removing the center backrest
Models with the optional 3-section rear seat
- Press the control at the top of the center section to the rear to rele\
ase the locking mechanism.
- Fold the backrest section slightly forward.
- Pull up on the handle at the upper rear side of the backrest (see ill\
ustration above) to release this
section of the backrest from the retaining bar at the base of the backre\
st.
- Lift out the backrest.

Using the center section as an armrest
The center section of the backrest can be reversed and used as an armres\
t.
- Remove the center backrest as described on
page 97.
- Turn the backrest so that the front side faces up (see illustration a\
bove).

- Press the backrest back onto the retaining bar until it locks in place\
.
To return the backrest to its normal position, pull the handle (which i\
s now at the front, on the underside)
to release the backrest from the retaining bar. Return the backrest to t\
he normal position as described in
the right column.
Partition with storage pockets (accessory)
A partition with storage pockets is available as an accessory on V70 mod\
els with a 3- section rear seat.
This partition can help prevent objects in the cargo area from being thr\
own forward when the center
section of the backrest is not in the upright position.
Please refer to the installation instructions that are included with the\
partition or consult your Volvo
retailer.
Returning the center section of the backrest to its normal position
- Before the center section is put back in place, the right section of t\
he backrest must be locked in the
upright position.
- Replace the backrest by pressing the bottom section onto the retaining\
bar until the backrest clicks into
place.
- Fold up the backrest until it is securely locked in place.
WARNING!
l For safety reasons, the center section of the backrest or seat cushion s\
hould not be left in the
vehicle after they have been removed.
l Please be aware that with the center section of the backrest removed, un\
anchored objects in the rear
cargo area could be thrown forward between the outboard sections of the \
backrest in the event of a
sudden stop.
l When the center section of the backrest is put back in place, the right-\
hand section of the backrest
must be in the upright position in order to lock the center section secu\
rely in place and to be able to
use the center seat belt.

Removing a seat cushion
To make the loading space as flat as possible when the rear seat backres\
ts are folded down, the rear seat
cushions can be removed. To do so:
- Pull the strap on the rear seat cushion and pull the cushion forward t\
oward the front seat backrests.
- Unlock the two red locking tabs.
- Lift out the seat cushion.
When replacing, do everything in reverse order. Make sure the red lockin\
g tabs are in the locked
position when the seat cushion has been put back into place.

Auxiliary rear-facing child seat (option)
The auxiliary seat is designed to hold two belted occupants who each wei\
gh:
l In U.S.A.: between 66-88 lbs (30-40 kg), and who are not taller than 5\
5 inches (140 cm).

l In Canada: between 50-88 lbs (23-40 kg), and who are not taller than 5\
5 inches (140 cm).
Using the auxiliary seat with smaller occupants
l In the U.S.A: children who weigh between 33-66 lbs (15-30 kg), and who\
are not taller than 47 inches
(120 cm) may occupy the auxiliary seat only together with a booster cu\
shion that meets U.S.
government safety standards.
l In Canada: children who weigh between 41-66 lbs (18.5-30 kg), and who \
are not taller than 47 inches
(120 cm) may occupy the auxiliary seat only together with a booster cu\
shion that meets Canadian
government safety standards.
WARNING!
A booster cushion's detachable backrest must not be used in conjunction \
with the auxiliary seat, and
should be removed.
Install the auxiliary seat correctly in accordance with the installation\
instructions provided with the seat.
Raising the seat
- Remove the cargo area cover, if installed, from the vehicle. Raise the\
backrest section forward until it
locks in place.
- Flip the seat cushion over.
Stowing the seat
- Flip the seat cushion back into storage position.
- Pull the release handle and lower the backrest to storage position.
NOTE:
- If you have locked the vehicle with the remote control and if you then\
afterwards use a key in the
tailgate's lock cylinder (certain models) to unlock the tailgate only,\
the alarm will sound. See
page 116
for information on turning off a sounding alarm.
- Please also refer to the decal located on the auxiliary seat for furth\
er information on using this seat.
- Canadian models: other regulations apply for the use of the auxiliary \
seat in Canada. Please refer to the
decal on the seat.

WARNING!
l If your vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary seat (option or accessory\
), the tailgate must be fitted
with a lock cylinder. Unlocking from the outside can then be carried out\
in the usual way (key in
driver's door and/or remote control) and also by using the key in the t\
ailgate.
l All rear seat backrests must be up when the auxiliary seat is being used\
.
l The auxiliary seat's head restraint(s) should be properly positioned t\
o help provide the best support.
l The seat belt(s) should be properly fastened.
l The accessory steel cargo grid should never be mounted in the vehicle wh\
en the auxiliary seat is
used. See
page 104 for instructions on removing the steel grid.
l The luggage net should be retracted.
l The child safety lock in the tailgate should be on to prevent children f\
rom inadvertently opening
the tailgate from the inside.
l Failure to follow each of the instructions above will increase the risk \
of occupants being injured
during a sudden stop or collision.

Holder for grocery bags (option)
- Open the tailgate.
- Lift the hatch in the cargo area floor to fold up the grocery bag hold\
er.
- Hang or secure your grocery bags by means of tensioning straps or hold\
ers.
To remove the plastic tray (option), turn the two knobs at the sides. \
