2.8 Engine Control Module Bracket Assembly
Remove
1 Remove the engine control module (ECM), refer to 2.7 Engine Control Module.
2 Remove the bolt (1) and the two bolts (2), attaching the ECM bracket assembly (3) to the front engine
cover and remove.

Reinstall
Reinstallation of the engine control module (ECM) bracket assembly is the reverse of the removal procedure, noting the
following:
1 Tighten the ECM bracket assembly bolts to the correct torque specification.

20 Reduce the engine speed to idle.

On completion of the generator output test,
return the engine to idle and disconnect the
loading device from the battery terminals.
This prevents excessive battery discharge.
21 Stop the engine.
22 Disconnect the battery ground cable P-5 at the battery.
23 Remove the multimeters.
24 Reconnect the generator positive lead P-9.
25 Reconnect the battery ground cable P-5 to the battery.

Charging Circuit Voltage Drop Test
Prerequisites
Before testing the generator output, ensure that:
• all generator circuit connections are clean and tight,
• the generator is always connected to the battery during testing (to prevent damage to the diodes),
• the battery is fully charged, and
• the specific gravity does not vary more than 0.025 between cells. (It is recommended the average specific gravity
is 1.260 or higher). Refer to 6D1-3 Battery – V6.
Carry out a load test on the battery to determine its ability to supply and accept current. This is a good indicator of the
general condition of the battery. For details of battery testing, refer to 6D1-3 Battery – V6.
Inspect the drive belt and tensioner markings to determine if the drive belt is within operating limits. Replace the belt if it
is excessively worn or outside the operating range of the tensioner.
For further details, refer to 6A1 Engine Mechanical – V6.
Voltage Drop Test

Ensure the generator connections are clean
and tight.
1 Connect the positive lead of a multimeter set to measure voltage to the generator terminal P-9.
2 Connect the negative lead of the multimeter to the battery positive post.
3 Switch the headlamps on.
4 Start the engine.
5 Increase the engine speed to approximately 2500 r.p.m.
6 Record the voltage reading.
7 Reduce the engine speed to idle.

NOTE
Charging a battery at higher current rates can
significantly reduce the life of the battery.

6 After a few minutes, check the colour and specific gravity of the electrolyte. Refer to 3.3 Hydrometer Test.
7 Monitor the electrolyte temperature while the battery is charging. If the electrolyte temperature reaches 55 °C:
a switch the charging current off,
b allow the battery to cool,
c reduce the charging current, and
d restart charging the battery.
NOTE
For the best results, charge the battery with the
electrolyte and plates at room temperature. An
extremely cold battery may not appear to accept
current for several hours after starting the battery
charger. If the battery does not appear to accept
charge after several hours replace the battery.
8 For slow charging check the voltage and specific gravity each hour or more regularly for fast charging. Stop the charging when there is no change in voltage or electrolyte specific gravity over three checks.
9 If the battery was fast charged connect the battery to a slow-charger for a few hours to bring the battery to the fully charged condition. Ensure the last few hours of charge do not exceed 1 A.
10 Tighten the filler caps. Ensure they are secure.
11 Install the battery in the vehicle. Refer to 4.1 Battery.
4.3 Emergency Jump Starting Procedure
Safety Precautions
• Read and obey the general safety precautions for working with batteries, refer to 2 Safety Precautions.
• Do not allow the vehicles to touch each other during the jump starting procedure.
• Ensure the assisting vehicle battery has the same voltage rating and connects negative to ground. If this is not the
case, serious injury and damage to electrical equipment can result.
• Do not push or tow the vehicle to start it. Damage can result when unburnt fuel reaches the catalytic converter and
ignites.
• Do not start the vehicle using a fast charger.
• W hen using jumper leads, treat both the booster battery and the discharged battery with care.
• Do not allow sparks, flame or smoking near the battery.
• Ensure that metal tools or jumper cables do not simultaneously contact the battery positive terminal and any other
metal part of the vehicle.
Jump Starting Procedure
1 Position the assisting vehicle so the batteries of both vehicles are close together, refer to Figure 6D1-3 – 10.
2 Apply the park brake on both vehicles.
3 Ensure that P (park) is selected for automatic transmission and N (neutral) is selected for manual transmissions.

4 Turn off the ignition, lights and all other electrical loads.
5 Check the battery filler caps on both batteries are tight.
6 Place a wet cloth over the battery filler caps of each battery.
7 Attach one end of the red jumper cable to the positive terminal of the booster battery.
8 Attach the other end of the same cable to the positive terminal of the discharged battery.
9 Attach one end of the black jumper cable to the negative terminal of the booster battery.
10 Attach the other end to a solid stationary, metallic point on the engine of the disabled vehicle.
NOTE
Do not connect this end directly to the negative
post of the discharged battery.

11 Ensure the jumper cables are not on or near drive pulleys, cooling fans or other points that will move when the engine is started.
12 Start the engine in the booster vehicle and run the engine at a moderate speed for a few minutes.
13 Start the engine in the disabled vehicle.
NOTE
If the engine in the disabled vehicle does not start
within 30 seconds, stop cranking the engine and
fix the cause. Refer to 3 Diagnosis.
14 W hen the engine starts, allow both engines to idle for approximately seven minutes. This allows the voltage levels in both vehicles to balance.
15 Leave the vehicles running and remove the jumper cables in the reverse sequence to attaching them. W hen removing each clamp, take care to ensure that it does not touch any other metal.
16 Discard the wet cloths covering the battery filler caps of both batteries.

Do not turn the ignition switch off within 60
seconds of programming the VIN. Failure to
comply may result in the changes failing to be
programmed into the PIM.
5 W hen notified that the programming was successful, press the Confirm soft key to return to the Tech 2 Program
screen.
12.4 Immobiliser Link to ECM / PIM

Do not perform the Immobiliser Link to ECM /
PIM procedure within sixty seconds of turning
the ignition switch on. Failure to comply may
result in the PIM failing to link.
W hen the powertrain interface module (PIM) has been replaced, it is necessary to security link the PIM to the immobiliser
control unit (ICU) and engine control module (ECM) before the vehicle will start.
NOTE
This linking procedure between the ECM and PIM
is also known as the Immobiliser Function
Programming.
1 Prior to performing the linking procedure, obtain the security code. For further information, refer to 12.1Security and Programming Information.
2 Connect Tech 2 to the data link connector (DLC).
3 On Tech 2 select: Body / Powertrain Interface Module / Security / Immobiliser Link to ECM / PIM .
4 W hen Tech 2 displays Immobiliser Replaced, press the No soft key.
5 W hen Tech 2 displays PIM or ECM Replaced?, press the Yes soft key.
NOTE

Limp Home Mode Description
If a major electrical system failure occurs which could affect vehicle safety or damage the transmission during normal
operation, the TCM enters a limp home mode. In the limp home mode, the transmission operates in the following
manner:
• The pressure control solenoid is off and the line pressure is at maximum to minimise clutch slippage.
• The TCC solenoid is off, therefore the torque converter clutch is disabled.
• The two shift solenoids are turned off. The transmission will operate in fourth gear if the vehicle has successfully
completed a 1-2 upshift in the current ignition cycle. If the vehicle has not completed a 1-2 upshift in the current
ignition cycle, the transmission will operate in third gear. If the transmission is operating in fourth gear, third gear
may be obtained if the engine is stopped briefly and re-started.
In limp home mode, the gear selector lever is ineffective at selecting forward gear ranges. In third or fourth gear, heat
builds up in the transmission quickly, particularly in stop and go traffic. Excessive heat build-up may cause transmission
failure if the vehicle is driven for extended distances in limp home mode.
1.3 Transmission Indicators and Messages
For information pertaining to the instrument cluster and the transmission information it displays, refer to the RA Rodeo
Owner Handbook.
1.4 Electronic Component Description
For all other electrical components not covered in this section, refer to General Motors Powertrain Group Electronically
Controlled Automatic Transmission Technician's Guide.
Transmission Control Module (TCM)
The Transmission Control Module (TCM) is located under the instrument panel, next to the brake pedal assembly and
connects directly to the transmission wiring harness. A single 49-way connector is used to make the connection between
the vehicle wiring harness and the TCM.
To access the connector for diagnosis:
1 Ensure the ignition switch is in the OFF position.
2 Disconnect the connector (1) from the transmission control module (TCM) (2) as follows, refer to Figure 7C2 – 2: a remove the securing pin (3),
b press the locking tab and swing the lever (4) to free the connector,
c remove the connector.

4.14 DTC P0719 – Brake Switch Circuit High
Input (Stuck On)
DTC Description
This diagnostic procedure supports DTC P0719 Brake Switch Circuit High Voltage.
Circuit Description
The transmission control module (TCM) has a direct input from the stop lamp switch assembly. W hen the brake pedal is
pressed, 12 V is supplied to the TCM through connector C-96 pin 42.
W hen the TCM detects a voltage on the stop lamp switch signal circuit during acceleration, then DTC P0719 sets.
DTC P0719 is a type C DTC.
Refer to 2 W iring Diagrams and Connector Chart to aid in diagnosis.
Conditions for Running the DTC
• No DTCs P0722, P0723 or P0724.
• The vehicle speed is 8 – 40 km/h for 6 seconds, then greater than 40 km/h for 7 seconds.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The TCM detects voltage on the stop lamp switch signal circuit during acceleration.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
•
The TCM does not request the engine control module (ECM) to illuminate the MIL.
• The TCM records the operating conditions when the conditions for setting the DTC are met. The TCM records this
information as a Failure Record.
• The TCM stores DTC P0719 in TCM history.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
• The TCM clears the DTC from TCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without a non-emission
related diagnostic fault occurring.
• Tech 2 can clear the DTC.

• Drive in D4 from 0 – 60 km/h then brake, eight times in one
ignition cycle.

4.18 DTC P0741 – Torque Converter Clutch
System – Stuck Off
DTC Description
This diagnostic procedure supports DTC P0741 Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) System - Stuck Off.
Circuit Description
The torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid valve is a normally-open exhaust valve that is used with the torque converter
clutch pulse width modulation (TCC PWM) solenoid valve to control fluid acting on the converter clutch apply valve. The
TCC solenoid valve attaches to the transmission case assembly extending into the pump cover. W hen grounded by the
transmission control module (TCM), the TCC solenoid valve stops converter signal oil from exhausting. This causes
converter signal oil pressure to increase and move the converter clutch apply valve against spring force and into the
apply position. In this position, release fluid is open to an exhaust port and converter feed fluid fills the apply fluid circu it.
The converter feed fluid applies the TCC. When the TCM no longer provides a ground path, the TCC solenoid valve de-
energizes and apply fluid exhausts, releasing the TCC.
When the TCM detects high torque converter slip when the TCC is commanded off, then DTC P0741 sets. DTC P0741 is
a type B DTC.
