Fail-safe of Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor
The accelerator pedal position sensor is comprised of two (main, sub) sensor circuits. If a malfunction
occurs in either one of the sensor circuits, the ECM detects the abnormal signal voltage difference
between these two sensor circuits and switches to the limp mode. In the limp mode, the remaining circuit
is used to calculate the accelerator pedal depressed angle, in order to operate the vehicle under the limp
mode control.
If both circuits have malfunctions, the ECM detects the abnormal signal voltage from these two sensor
circuits and stops the throttle control. At this time, the vehicle can be driven within its idling range.

Fail-safe of Throttle Position Sensor
The throttle position sensor is comprised of two (main, sub) sensor circuits. If a malfunction occurs in
either one or both of the sensor circuits, the ECM detects the abnormal signal voltage difference between
these two sensor circuits, cuts off the current to the throttle control motor, and switches to the limp mode.
Then, the force of the return spring causes the throttle valve to return and stay at the prescribed opening
angle. At this time, the vehicle can be driven in the limp mode while the engine output is regulated
through the control of the fuel injection (intermittent fuel-cut) and ignition timing in accordance with the
accelerator opening.
The same control as above is effected if the ECM detects a malfunction in the throttle control motor
system.

9. Fuel Pump Control
A fuel cut control is used to stop the fuel pump when the SRS airbag is deployed at the front collision. In this
system, the airbag deployment signal from the airbag sensor is detected by the ECM, which turns OFF the
circuit opening relay.
After the fuel cut control has been activated, turning the ignition switch from OFF to ON cancels the fuel cut
control, and the engine can be restarted.

b. Atmospheric Pressure Measurement
1) When the ignition switch is turned OFF, the purge VSV and vent valve are turned OFF. Therefore,
the atmospheric pressure is introduced into the canister.
2) The ECM measures the atmospheric pressure through the signals provided by the canister pressure
sensor.
3) If the measurement value is out of standards, the ECM actuates the leak detection pump in order
to monitor the changes in the pressure.

Air Intake Control
System
[See page EG-128]The intake air duct is divided into two areas, and the ECM controls the air
intake control valve and the actuator that are provided in one of the areas to
reduce the amount of engine noise.
Fuel Pump Control
[See page EG-53 in

The cooling fan ECU steplessly controls the speed of the fans in accordance
with the engine coolant temperature, vehicle speed, engine speed, and air
conditioning operating conditions. As a result, the cooling performance is

If ETCS-i (Electronic Throttle Control
System-intelligent) has a malfunction, ECM
cuts off current to throttle control motor.
Throttle control valve returns to predetermined
opening angle (approximately 6.5
) by force of
return spring. ECM then adjusts engine output
by controlling fuel injection (intermittent
fuel-cut) and ignition timing in accordance with
accelerator pedal opening angel to enable
vehicle to continue driving at minimal speed. If
accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and
slowly, vehicle can be driven slowly. If
accelerator pedal is depressed quickly, vehicle
may speed up and slow down erratically. If “Pass” condition is detected and
then the ignition switch is turned
OFF, fail-safe operation will stop
and system will return to normal
operating conditions.

Accelerator pedal position sensor has two (main
and sub) sensor circuits. If a malfunction occurs
in either of sensor circuits, ECM detects
abnormal signal voltage difference between two
sensor circuits and switches into limp mode. In
limp mode, remaining circuit is used to calculate
accelerator pedal opening to allow vehicle to
continue driving. If both circuits malfunction,
ECM regards opening angle of accelerator pedal
to be fully closed. In this case, throttle valve will
remain closed as if engine is idling.
If “Pass” condition is detected and
then the ignition switch is turned
OFF, fail-safe operation will stop
and system will return to normal
operating conditions.
POWER STEERING – ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING SYSTEMPS–5
PS
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
1. DESCRIPTION
The EPS (Electronic Power Steering) system generates
torque through the operation of the motor and the
reduction gear installed on the column shaft in order to
assist steering effort.
The power steering ECU determines directions and the
amount of assisting power in accordance with vehicle
speed signals and signals from the torque sensor built
into the steering column assembly. As a result, the power
steering adjusts the steering effort so that it is lighter
during low speed driving and heavier during high speed
driving.
(a) Power steering ECU:
The power steering ECU calculates assisting power
based on steering torque signals from the torque
sensor and vehicle speed signals from the skid
control ECU.
(b) Torque sensor:
The torque sensor detects the steering effort
generated when the steering wheel is turned and
converts it to an electrical signal.
(c) EPS motor:
The EPS motor is activated by the current from the
power steering ECU and generates torque to assist
the steering effort.
(d) Motor rotation angle sensor:
The motor rotation angle sensor consists of the
resolver sensor, which excels in reliability and
durability. The rotation angle sensor detects the
rotation angle of the motor and outputs it to the
power steering ECU. As a result, it ensures efficient
EPS control.
