(d) Shift solenoid valve SL1, SL2, SL3 and S4:
Fail safe function:
If either of the shift solenoid valve circuits develops an open or short, the ECM turns the other shift solenoid
”ON” and ”OFF” in order to shift into the gear positions shown in the table below.
Manual shifting as shown in the following table must be done (In case of a short circuit, the ECM stops send-
ing the current to the short circuit solenoid).
Even if starting the engine in the fail−safe mode, the gear position remain in the same position.

5. CHECK CHK ENG (MIL)
(a) The CHK ENG (MIL) comes on when the ignition switch
is turned to ON position and the engine is not running.
HINT:
If the CHK ENG (MIL) is not illuminated, troubleshoot the CHK
ENG (MIL) circuit (see page 05 −25 1).
( 1 ) When the engine is started, the CHK ENG (MIL)
should go off. If the lamp remains on, it means that
the diagnosis system has detected a malfunction or
abnormality in the system.

PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE
HINT:
If a normal code is displayed during the diagnostic trouble code check although the trouble still occurs, check
the electrical circuits for each symptom in the order given in the charts on the following pages and proceed
to the page given for troubleshooting.
The Matrix Chart is divided into 2 chapters.
1. Chapter 1: Electronic Circuit Matrix Chart
S Refer to the table below when the trouble cause is considered to be electrical.
S If the instruction ”Proceed to next circuit inspection shown on matrix chart” is given in the flow chart
of each circuit, proceed to the circuit with the next highest number in the table to continue the check.
S If the trouble still occurs even though there are no abnormalities in any of the other circuits, check and
replace the ECM.
HINT:
* 1 : When the circuit on which mark * 1 is attached is a malfunction, DTC could be output (see page 05 −564).

MANUAL SHIFTING TEST
1. PERFORM MANUAL SHIFTING TEST
HINT:
S With this test, it can be determined whether the trouble oc-
curs in the electrical circuit or is a mechanical problem in
the transaxle.
S If any abnormalities are found in the following test, the
problem is in the transaxle itself.
(a) Disconnect the transmission wire connector.
(b) Drive with the transmission wire disconnected. Shifting the shift lever to the D position to check whether
the shifting condition changes the table below.
Shift PositionShifting Condition
DNo Shift (Not Change)
HINT:
When driving with the transmission wire disconnected, the gear
position will be as follows:
S When the shift lever is in the D position, the gear is held
in the 4th position.
S When the shift lever is in the R or the P position, the gear
is also in the R or the P position respectively.
(c) Connect the transmission wire connector.
(d) Clear the DTC (see page 05 −557).

(a) Check the battery electrolyte level.
(1) Check the electrolyte quantity of each cell.
If the electrolyte quantity is below the recommended amount,
add distilled water.
(b) Check the indicator as shown in the illustration.

2. INSPECT BATTERY TERMINALS, FUSIBLE LINK AND FUSES
(a) Visually check the battery terminals.
(1) Check that the battery terminals are not loosened or corroded.
(b) Visually check the fusible link and fuses.
(1) Check that there is continuity of the fusible links, high−current fuses and regular fuses.
3. INSPECT V−RIBBED BELT
(a) Visually check the belt for excessive wear, frayed cords
etc.
SIf any defects are found, replace the v−ribbed belt.
SCracks on the rib side of the belt are considered ac-
ceptable.
If the belt has chunks missing from the ribs, it should
be replaced.
(b) Check that the belt fits properly in the ribbed grooves.
Confirm that the belt has not slipped out of the groove on the
bottom of the pulley by hand.
4. VISUALLY CHECK GENERATOR WIRING
(a) Check that the wiring is in good condition.
5. LISTEN FOR ABNORMAL NOISES FROM GENERATOR
(a) Check that no abnormal noise is heard from the generator while the engine is running.
6. INSPECT CHARGE WARNING LIGHT CIRCUIT

(a) Turn the ignition switch ON. Check that the charge warning light comes on.
(b) Start the engine, then check that the light goes off.
HINT:
If the light does not operate as specified, troubleshoot the charge warning light circuit.
7. INSPECT CHARGING CIRCUIT WITHOUT LOAD
(a) If a tester is not available, connect a voltmeter to the
charging circuit as follows:
(1) Disconnect the wire from terminal B of the genera-
tor, then connect it to the negative (−) lead of the
ammeter.
(2) Connect the positive (+) lead of the ammeter to ter-
minal B of the generator.
(3) Connect the positive (+) lead of the voltmeter to ter-
minal B of the generator.
(4) Ground the negative (−) lead of the voltmeter.
(b) Check the charging circuit.
(1) Keep the engine speed at 2,000 rpm, then check
the reading on the ammeter and voltmeter.
Standard amperage: 10 A or less
Standard voltage: 12.9 to 14.9 V
8. INSPECT CHARGING CIRCUIT WITH LOAD
(a) With the engine running at 2,000 rpm, turn the high beam headlights ON and turn the heater blower
switch to the ”HI” position.
(b) Check the reading on the ammeter.
Standard amperage: 30 A or more
SIf the ammeter reading is less than the standard amperage, repair the generator.
SIf the battery is fully charged, the indication will sometimes be less than the standard amperage.
