Intelligent Key Lock-in Prevention Function
When Intelligent Key is in vehicle, a door is open, and doors are locked using door lock and unlock switch,
driver door lock knob, Intelligent Key unit sends door unlock request signal to BCM via CAN communication to
unlock all doors to prevent Intelligent Key from becoming locked in vehicle.
When Intelligent Key is in trunk room, all doors are lock and trunk lid is closed, Intelligent Key unit sends trunk
open signal to BCM. Then BCM open trunk lid and warning buzzer sounds for 10 seconds.
CAUTION:
The above function operates when the Intelligent Key is inside the vehicle. However, there may be
times when Intelligent Key cannot be detected and this function will not operate when Intelligent Key
is on the instrument panel, rear parcel shelf, or in the glove box. Also, this system some times does
not operate if the Intelligent Key is in the door pocket for the open door.

REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY FUNCTIONS
Door Lock/Unlock Function
Operating a remote controller button on the Intelligent Key sends the Intelligent Key-ID to the Intelligent
Key unit. Intelligent Key unit conducts a verification of the received key-ID, and if the verification is
accepted, a door lock or door unlock request signal is sent to BCM via CAN communication to lock/unlock
the door lock.
When door lock/unlock is performed using Intelligent Key remote controller button operation, operation
confirmation is conducted by making hazard lamps flash and Intelligent Key warning buzzer sound.
Trunk Open Function
Operating a remote controller button on the Intelligent Key sends the Intelligent Key-ID to the Intelligent
Key unit.
Intelligent Key unit conducts a verification of the received key-ID, and if the verification is accepted, a
trunk open request signal is sent to BCM via CAN communication trunk lid is opened.

ENGINE START FUNCTION
Operation Description
When ignition knob is pressed, Intelligent Key unit sends request signal from inside key antenna, key-ID
verification is performed with Intelligent Key using two-way communication, and if verification is success-
ful, an ignition rotation prohibition latch release signal is sent to steering lock unit. Steering lock unit
releases ignition knob rotation prohibition latch. (Ignition knob can now be turned.)
When it becomes possible to rotate the ignition knob, “KEY” warning lamp in combination meter lights up
green to notify driver that ignition knob can be turned.
NOTE:
When it becomes impossible to rotate the ignition knob, “KEY” warning lamp in combination meter lights
up red.
When key-ID verification is successful, Intelligent Key unit uses CAN communication to send engine start
permission signal to BCM.
When BCM receives engine start permission signal, it uses CAN communication to sent starter request
signal to IPDM E/R so that the engine will start when ignition knob is rotated to START position.
Operation Range
Engine can be started when Intelligent Key is in the vehicle. However, sometimes engine might not start when
Intelligent Key is on instrument panel, rear parcel shelf, trunk room or in glove box.

ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEMPFP:00028
IntroductionBBS005BP
The ECM has an on board diagnostic system, which detects malfunctions related to engine sensors or actua-
tors. The ECM also records various emission-related diagnostic information including:
The above information can be checked using procedures listed in the table below.
×: Applicable —: Not applicable
*: When DTC and 1st trip DTC simultaneously appear on the display, they cannot be clearly distinguished from each other.
The malfunction indicator (MI) on the instrument panel lights up when the same malfunction is detected in two
consecutive trips (Two trip detection logic), or when the ECM enters fail-safe mode. (Refer to EC-59
.)
Two Trip Detection LogicBBS005BQ
When a malfunction is detected for the first time, 1st trip DTC and 1st trip Freeze Frame data are stored in the
ECM memory. The MI will not light up at this stage. <1st trip>
If the same malfunction is detected again during the next drive, the DTC and Freeze Frame data are stored in
the ECM memory, and the MI lights up. The MI lights up at the same time when the DTC is stored. <2nd trip>
The “trip” in the “Two Trip Detection Logic” means a driving mode in which self-diagnosis is performed during
vehicle operation. When the ECM enters fail-safe mode (Refer to EC-59
.), the DTC is stored in the ECM
memory even in the 1st trip.
When there is an open circuit on MI circuit, the ECM can not warn the driver by lighting up MI when there is
trouble on engine control system. Therefore, when Electrical controlled throttle and part of the ECM related
diagnoses are continuously detected as NG for 5-trips, ECM warns the driver that engine control system has
trouble and MI circuit is open by means of operating fail-safe function.
The fail-safe function also operates when above diagnoses except MI circuit are detected and demands the
driver to repair the trouble.

ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM
1. If the ignition switch stays ON after repair work, be sure to turn ignition switch OFF once. Wait at least 10
seconds and then turn it ON (engine stopped) again.
2. Touch “ENGINE”.
3. Touch “SELF-DIAG RESULTS”.
4. Touch “ERASE”. (The DTC in the ECM will be erased.)
Without CONSULT-II
1. If the ignition switch stays ON after repair work, be sure to turn ignition switch OFF once.
2. Wait at least 10 seconds and then turn it ON (engine stopped) again.
3. Change the diagnostic test mode from Mode II to Mode I by depressing the accelerator pedal.
If the battery is disconnected, the emission-related diagnostic information will be lost within 24
hours.
The following data are cleared when the ECM memory is erased.
–Diagnostic trouble codes
–1st trip diagnostic trouble codes
–Freeze frame data
–1st trip freeze frame data
Actual work procedures are explained using a DTC as an example. Be careful so that not only the DTC, but all
of the data listed above, are cleared from the ECM memory during work procedures.
Malfunction Indicator (MI)BBS005BS
DESCRIPTION
The MI is located on the instrument panel.
1. The MI will light up when the ignition switch is turned ON without
the engine running. This is a bulb check.
If the MI does not light up, refer to DI-35, "
WARNING LAMPS"
or see EC-344, "MI & DATA LINK CONNECTORS" .
2. When the engine is started, the MI should go off.
If the MI remains on, the on board diagnostic system has
detected an engine system malfunction.
