PCM determines basic fuel injector pulse width from
this input.
²The PCM determines atmospheric air pressure
from the MAP sensor input to modify injector pulse
width.
When the key is in the ON position and the engine
is not running (zero rpm), the Auto Shutdown (ASD)
and fuel pump relays de-energize after approximately
1 second. Therefore, battery voltage is not supplied to
the fuel pump, ignition coil, fuel injectors and heated
oxygen sensors.
ENGINE START-UP MODE
This is an OPEN LOOP mode. If the vehicle is in
park or neutral (automatic transaxles) or the clutch
pedal is depressed (manual transaxles) the ignition
switch energizes the starter relay. The following
actions occur when the starter motor is engaged.
²If the PCM receives the camshaft position sensor
and crankshaft position sensor signals, it energizes
the Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay and fuel pump relay.
If the PCM does not receive both signals within
approximately one second, it will not energize the
ASD relay and fuel pump relay. The ASD and fuel
pump relays supply battery voltage to the fuel pump,
fuel injectors, ignition coil and heated oxygen sen-
sors.
²The PCM energizes the injectors (on the 69É
degree falling edge) for a calculated pulse width until
it determines crankshaft position from the camshaft
position sensor and crankshaft position sensor sig-
nals. The PCM determines crankshaft position within
1 engine revolution.
²After determining crankshaft position, the PCM
begins energizing the injectors in sequence. It adjusts
injector pulse width and controls injector synchroni-
zation by turning the individual ground paths to the
injectors On and Off.
²When the engine idles within664 RPM of its
target RPM, the PCM compares current MAP sensor
value with the atmospheric pressure value received
during the Ignition Switch On (zero RPM) mode.
Once the ASD and fuel pump relays have been
energized, the PCM determines injector pulse width
based on the following:
²Battery voltage
²Engine coolant temperature
²Engine RPM
²Inlet/Intake air temperature (IAT)
²MAP
²Throttle position
²The number of engine revolutions since cranking
was initiated
During Start-up the PCM maintains ignition tim-
ing at 9É BTDC.
ENGINE WARM-UP MODE
This is an OPEN LOOP mode. The following inputs
are received by the PCM:
²Engine coolant temperature
²Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP)
²Inlet/Intake air temperature (IAT)
²Crankshaft position (engine speed)
²Camshaft position
²Knock sensor
²Throttle position
²A/C switch
²Battery voltage
²Vehicle speed
²Speed control
²O2 sensors
The PCM adjusts injector pulse width and controls
injector synchronization by turning the individual
ground paths to the injectors On and Off.
The PCM adjusts ignition timing and engine idle
speed. Engine idle speed is adjusted through the idle
air control motor.
CRUISE OR IDLE MODE
When the engine is at operating temperature this
is a CLOSED LOOP mode. During cruising or idle
the following inputs are received by the PCM:
²Inlet/Intake air temperature
²Engine coolant temperature
²Manifold absolute pressure
²Crankshaft position (engine speed)
²Camshaft position
²Knock sensor
²Throttle position
²Exhaust gas oxygen content
²A/C control positions
²Battery voltage
²Vehicle speed
The PCM adjusts injector pulse width and controls
injector synchronization by turning the individual
ground paths to the injectors On and Off.
The PCM adjusts engine idle speed and ignition
timing. The PCM adjusts the air/fuel ratio according
to the oxygen content in the exhaust gas (measured
by the upstream and downstream heated oxygen sen-
sor).
The PCM monitors for engine misfire. During
active misfire and depending on the severity, the
PCM either continuously illuminates or flashes the
malfunction indicator lamp (Check Engine light on
instrument panel). Also, the PCM stores an engine
misfire DTC in memory.
The PCM performs several diagnostic routines.
They include:
²Oxygen sensor monitor
²Downstream heated oxygen sensor diagnostics
during open loop operation (except for shorted)

SKIM is properly installed on the steering column,
the antenna ring fits snugly around the circumfer-
ence of the ignition lock cylinder housing. If this ring
is not mounted properly, communication problems
may arise in the form of transponder-related faults.
For added system security, each SKIM is pro-
grammed with a unique9Secret Key9code. This code
is stored in memory and is sent over the PCI bus to
the PCM and to each key that is programmed to
work with the vehicle. The9Secret Key9code is there-
fore a common element found in all components of
the Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS). In the
event that a SKIM replacement is required, the
9Secret Key9code can be restored from the PCM by
following the SKIM replacement procedure found in
the DRB IIItscan tool. Proper completion of this
task will allow the existing ignition keys to be repro-
grammed. Therefore, new keys will NOT be needed.
In the event that the original9Secret Key9code can
not be recovered, new ignition keys will be required.
The DRB IIItscan tool will alert the technician if
key replacement is necessary. Another security code,
called a PIN, is used to gain secured access to the
SKIM for service. The SKIM also stores in its mem-
ory the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), which it
learns through a bus message from the assembly
plant tester. The SKIS scrambles the information
that is communicated between its components in
order to reduce the possibility of unauthorized SKIM
access and/or disabling.
OPERATION
When the ignition switch is moved to the RUN
position, the SKIM transmits an RF signal to the
transponder in the ignition key. The SKIM then
waits for a response RF signal from the transponder
in the key. If the response received identifies the key
as valid, the SKIM sends a9valid key9message to
the PCM over the PCI bus. If the response received
identifies the key as invalid or no response is
received from the transponder in the ignition key, the
SKIM sends an9invalid key9message to the PCM.
The PCM will enable or disable engine operation
based upon the status of the SKIM messages. It is
important to note that the default condition in the
PCM is9invalid key.9Therefore, if no response is
received by the PCM, the engine will be immobilized
after two (2) seconds of running.
The SKIM also sends indicator light status mes-
sages to the BCM to operate the light. This is the
method used to turn the light ON solid or to flash it
after the indicator light test is complete to signify a
fault in the SKIS. If the light comes ON and stays
ON solid after the indicator light test, this signifies
that the SKIM has detected a system malfunction
and/or that the SKIS has become inoperative. If theSKIM detects an invalid keyORa key-related fault
exists, the indicator light will flash following the
indicator light test. The SKIM may also request an
audible chime if the customer key programming fea-
ture is available and the procedure is being utilized.

der Key, Standard Procedure - Transponder Program-
ming.
REMOVAL
(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable.
(2) Remove Lower Instrument Panel Cover. Refer
to Body, Instrument Panel, Lower Instrument Panel
Cover, Removal.
(3) Remove the steering column upper and lower
shrouds. Refer to Steering, Column, Column Shroud,
Removal.
(4) Disengage the steering column wire harness
from the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM).
(5) Remove the one screws securing the SKIM to
the steering column.
(6) Rotate the SKIM upwards and then to the side
away from the steering column to slide the SKIM
antenna ring from around the ignition switch lock
cylinder housing.
(7) Remove the SKIM from the vehicle.
INSTALLATION
(1) Slip the SKIM antenna ring around the igni-
tion switch lock cylinder housing. Rotate the SKIM
downwards and then towards the steering column.
(2) Install the one screws securing the SKIM to
the steering column.
(3) Engage the steering column wire harness from
the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM).
(4) Install the steering column upper and lower
shrouds. Refer to Steering, Column, Column Shroud,
Installation.
(5) Install the Lower Instrument Panel Cover.
Refer to Body, Instrument Panel, Lower Instrument
Panel Cover, Installation.
(6) Connect the battery negative cable.
SLIDING DOOR CONTROL
MODULE
DESCRIPTION
Vehicles equipped with a power sliding door utilize
a sliding door control module. The sliding door con-
trol module is located behind the sliding door trim
panel in the center of the door, just above the sliding
door motor. This module controls the operation of the
door through the Programmable Communication
Interface (PCI) J1850 data bus circuit and the Body

STANDARD PROCEDURE - TCC BREAK-IN
VIEW/RESTART PROCEDURE
The Transmission Control Module (TCM) employs
a strategy which modifies torque converter clutch
(TCC) operation. This strategy conditions the torque
converter clutch disc for optimum converter clutch
engagement and feel throughout the life of the trans-
axle. The cycle inhibits FEMCC until six hours of
PEMCC operation have taken place, or the vehicle
has been driven 6,035 km (3750 miles). The cycle
automatically terminates when either the time or
mileage has been achieved, however, the mileage
may vary slightly from vehicle to vehicle.
The TCC break-in cycle must be restarted using
the DRB Scan Tool, and upon:
²Replacement of TCM on vehicle with less than
6,035 km (3750 miles) or less than 6 hours of
PEMCC operation
²Replacement of torque converter assembly at
any vehicle mileage
NOTE: Failure to restart the TCC Break-In Cycle
upon TCM replacement in vehicles with less than
six hours of PEMCC or less than 6,035 km (3750
miles), or upon torque converter replacement at any
mileage, may result in vehicle shudder during cer-
tain operating conditions.
Procedure
The DRB Scan Tool is required to view and/or
restart the TCC Break-In cycle.
(1) Connect the DRB Scan Tool to the vehicle diag-
nostic connector.
(2) Navigate to ªTCC Break-Inº via Transmission/
Transmission Control Module/Miscellaneous.
(3) View or Start TCC Break-In as prompted by
DRB menu.
REMOVAL
NOTE: If transmission control module is being
replaced with a new or replacement unit, the Pinion
Factor and Quick Learn procedures must be per-
formed. (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC
CONTROL MODULES/TRANSMISSION CONTROL

(2) Raise vehicle on hoist.
(3) Remove left front tire/wheel assembly.
(4) Pull back splash shield to gain access to TCM

(5) Disconnect TCM 60-way connector (Fig. 15).
(6) Remove three (3) TCM-to-rail screws and
remove TCM from vehicle (Fig. 16).

STANDARD PROCEDURE - BUILT-IN
INDICATOR TEST
An indicator (hydrometer) built into the top of the
battery case provides visual information for battery
testing (Fig. 7). Like a hydrometer, the built-in indi-
cator measures the specific gravity of the battery
electrolyte. The specific gravity of the electrolyte
reveals the battery state-of-charge; however, it will
not reveal the cranking capacity of the battery. A load
test must be performed to determine the battery
cranking capacity. Refer to Standard Procedures for
the proper battery load test procedures.
Before testing, visually inspect the battery for any
damage (a cracked case or cover, loose posts, etc.)
that would cause the battery to be faulty. In order to
obtain correct indications from the built-in indicator,
it is important that the battery be level and have a
clean sight glass. Additional light may be required to
view the indicator.Do not use open flame as a
source of additional light.
To read the built-in indicator, look into the sight
glass and note the color of the indication (Fig. 8). The
battery condition that each color indicates is
described in the following list:
²Green- Indicates 75% to 100% battery state-of-
charge. The battery is adequately charged for further
testing or return to service. If the starter will not
crank for a minimum of fifteen seconds with a fully-
charged battery, the battery must be load tested.
Refer to Standard Procedures for the proper battery
load test procedures.
²Black or Dark- Indicates 0% to 75% battery
state-of-charge. The battery is inadequately charged
and must be charged until a green indication is visi-
ble in the sight glass (12.4 volts or more), before the
battery is tested further or returned to service. Refer
to Standard Procedures for the proper battery charg-
ing procedures. Also refer to Diagnosis and Testingfor more information on the possible causes of the
discharged battery condition.
²Clear or Bright- Indicates a low battery elec-
trolyte level. The electrolyte level in the battery is
below the built-in indicator. Distilled water must be
added to a low-maintenance battery with removable
cell caps before it is charged. Refer to Standard Pro-
cedures for the proper battery filling procedures. A
low electrolyte level may be caused by an overcharg-
ing condition. Refer to Charging System for the
proper charging system diagnosis and testing proce-
dures.
STANDARD PROCEDURE - HYDROMETER TEST
The hydrometer test reveals the battery state-of-
charge by measuring the specific gravity of the elec-
trolyte.This test cannot be performed on
maintenance-free batteries with non-removable
cell caps.If the battery has non-removable cell caps,
refer to Diagnosis and Testing for alternate methods
of determining the battery state-of-charge.
Specific gravity is a comparison of the density of
the battery electrolyte to the density of pure water.
Pure water has a specific gravity of 1.000, and sulfu-
ric acid has a specific gravity of 1.835. Sulfuric acid
makes up approximately 35% of the battery electro-
lyte by weight, or 24% by volume. In a fully-charged
battery the electrolyte will have a temperature-cor-
rected specific gravity of 1.260 to 1.290. However, a
specific gravity of 1.235 or above is satisfactory for
the battery to be load tested and/or returned to ser-
vice.
Before testing, visually inspect the battery for any
damage (a cracked case or cover, loose posts, etc.)
that would cause the battery to be faulty. Then
remove the battery cell caps and check the electrolyte
level. Add distilled water if the electrolyte level is
below the top of the battery plates. Refer to Battery
System Cleaning for the proper battery inspection
procedures.

(1) Check battery before performing this test. Bat-
tery must be fully charged.
(2) Connect a volt-ampere tester to the battery ter-
minals. Refer to the operating instructions provided
with the tester being used.
(3) To disable the ignition and fuel systems, dis-
connect the Automatic Shutdown Relay (ASD). The
ASD relay is located in the Power Distribution Cen-
ter (PDC). Refer to the PDC cover for proper relay
location.
(4) Verify that all lights and accessories are OFF,
and the transmission shift selector is in the PARK
and SET parking brake.
CAUTION: Do not overheat the starter motor or
draw the battery voltage below 9.6 volts during
cranking operations.
(5) Rotate and hold the ignition switch in the
START position. Observe the volt-ampere tester (Fig.
2).
²If voltage reads above 9.6 volts, and amperage
draw reads above 280 amps, check for engine seizing
or faulty starter.
²If voltage reads 12.4 volts or greater and amper-
age reads 0 to 10 amps, check for corroded cables
and/or bad connections.
²Voltage below 9.6 volts and amperage draw
above 300 amps, the problem is the starter. Replace
the starter refer to starter removal.
(6) After the starting system problems have been
corrected, verify the battery state-of-charge and
charge battery if necessary. Disconnect all testingequipment and connect ASD relay. Start the vehicle
several times to assure the problem has been cor-
rected.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - SYSTEM TEST
Electrically heated rear window defogger or the
heated windshield wiper deicer operation can be
checked on the vehicle in the following manner:
(1) Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
(2) Using a ammeter on the battery, turn the rear
defogger control switch to the ON position, a distinct
increase in amperage draw should be noted.
(3) The rear window defogger or the heated wind-
shield wiper deicer operation can be checked by feel-
ing the glass. A distinct difference in temperature
between the grid lines and adjacent clear glass can
be detected in 3 to 4 minutes of operation.
(4) Using a DC voltmeter (Fig. 4) contact terminal
B with the negative lead, and terminal A with the
positive lead. The voltmeter should read 10-14 volts.
(5) Indicator light illumination means that there is
power available at the switch only and does not nec-
essarily verify system operation.
(6) If turning the defogger switch ON, no distinct
current draw on the ammeter the problem should be
isolated in the following manner:
²Confirm that ignition switch is ON.
²Ensure that the heated rear window or the
heated windshield wiper deicer feed pigtail is con-
nected to the wiring harness and that the ground
pigtail is in fact grounded.
²Ensure that the proper fuse in the PDC is OK.
(7) When the above steps have been completed and
the system is still inoperative it may be necessary to
connect a DRBIII scan tool and refer to the Diagnos-
tic Service Manual, you may also check for the fol-
lowing being defective:
²HVAC control assembly
²Rear window defogger relay in the IPM.
²Check for loose connector or a wire pushed out
of connector.
²Rear window or the windshield grid lines (all
grid lines would have to be broken, or one of the feed
pigtails not connected to the bus bar, for no ammeter
deflection).
(8) If turning the switch ON produces severe volt-
meter deflection, the circuit should be closely checked
for a shorting condition.
(9) If the system operation has been verified but
indicator LED does not light, replace the HVAC con-
trol assembly.
(10) For detailed wiring information, refer to the
appropriate section for Wiring Diagrams.

The repair for the front windshield or the rear win-
dow grids are the same.
The repair of grid lines and replacement of the ter-
minal is possible using the MopartRepair Package
or equivalent.
(1) Clean area surrounding grid line or terminal
by gently rubbing area with steel wool.
(2) Wipe area with clean cloth soaked in alcohol or
similar solvent. It is necessary that all contaminants
be removed from repair area.

diagrams. Following are general descriptions of the
major components in the heated seat system.
OPERATION
The heated seat system will only operate when the
ignition switch is in the On position, and the surface
temperature at the front seat heating element sen-
sors is below the designed temperature set points of
the system. The heated seat system will not operate
in ambient temperatures greater than about 41É C
(105É F). The front seat heating elements and sensors
are hard wired to the Heated Seat Module (HSM) or
the Memory Heated Seat Module (MHSM).
The heated seat switches are hard wired to the
Body Control Module (BCM). The BCM monitors the
heated seat switch inputs, then sends heated seat
switch status messages to the HSM or MHSM over
the Programmable Communications Interface J1850
(PCI) data bus. The HSM or MHSM contains the con-
trol logic for the heated seat system. The HSM or
MHSM responds to the heated seat switch status
messages, ignition switch status messages, and the
front seat heating element sensor inputs by control-
ling the output to the front seat heating elements
through integral solid-state relays.
When a seat heater is turned on, the sensor
located on the seat cushion electric heater element
provides the HSM or MHSM with an input indicating
the surface temperature of the seat cushion. If the
surface temperature input is below the temperature
set point for the selected Low or High heated seat
switch position, the HSM or MHSM energizes the
integral solid-state relay, which supplies battery cur-
rent to the heating elements in the seat cushion and
back. When the sensor input indicates the correct
temperature set point has been achieved, the HSM or
MHSM de-energizes the solid-state relay. The HSM
or MHSM will continue to cycle the solid-state relay
as needed to maintain the temperature set point.
The HSM or MHSM and the seat heater elements
operate on non-switched battery current supplied
through the power seat fuse in the intelligent powermodule. However, the HSM or MHSM will automati-
cally turn off the heating elements if it detects an
open in the sensor circuit, a short in the heating ele-
ment circuit causing an excessive current draw, or
when the ignition switch is turned to the Off posi-
tion.

DRIVER HEATED SEAT
SWITCH
DESCRIPTION
The heated seat switches are mounted in the
instrument panel center bezel (Fig. 2). The two three-
position rocker-type switches, one switch for each
front seat, are incorporated into one large switch
assembly that also includes the hazzard, rear window
wiper and washer switches. The heated seat switches
provide a resistor multiplexed signal to the Body
Control Module (BCM) through separate hard wired
circuits. Each switch has an Off, Low, and High posi-
tion so that both the driver and the front seat pas-
senger can select a preferred seat heating mode.
Each switch has two Light-Emitting Diodes (LED)
which light to indicate that the heater for the seat is
turned on.
The heated seat switches and their LEDs cannot
be repaired. If either switch or LED is faulty or dam-
aged, the entire switch assembly must be replaced.

OPERATION
The heated seat elements resist the flow of electri-
cal current. When battery current is passed through
the elements, the energy lost by the resistance of the
elements to the current flow is released in the form
of heat. The temperature sensor is a NTC thermistor.
When the temperature of the seat cushion cover
rises, the resistance of the sensor decreases. The
HSM or MHSM supplies a five-volt current to one
side of each sensor, and monitors the voltage drop
through the sensor on a return circuit. The MSM or
MHSM uses this temperature sensor input to moni-
tor the temperature of the seat, and regulates the
current flow to the seat heating elements accordingly.
DIAGNOSIS & TESTING - HEATED SEAT
ELEMENT
The wire harness connectors for the seat cushion
and seat back heating elements are located under the
seat, near the rear edge of the seat cushion frame.
For circuit descriptions and diagrams, refer to Group
8W, Wiring Diagrams.
SEAT CUSHION
(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable. Unplug the 4-way heated seat cushion wire
harness connector.
(2) Check for continuity between the two heated
seat driver circuit cavities of the seat cushion cover
half of the heated seat cushion wire harness connec-
tor. There should be continuity. If OK, go to Step 3. If
not OK, replace the faulty seat cushion cover.
(3) Check for continuity between one of the heated
seat driver circuit cavities of the seat cushion cover
half of the heated seat cushion wire harness connec-
tor and the seat cushion frame. There should be no
continuity. If OK, go to the Seat Back test. If not OK,
replace the faulty seat cushion cover.
SEAT BACK
(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable. Unplug the 2-way heated seat back wire har-
ness connector.
(2) Check for continuity between the heated seat
driver circuit cavity and the ground circuit cavity of
the seat back cover half of the heated seat back wire
harness connector. There should be continuity. If OK,
go to Step 3. If not OK, replace the faulty seat back
cover.
(3) Check for continuity between the heated seat
driver circuit cavity of the seat back cover half of the
heated seat back wire harness connector and the seat
back frame. There should be no continuity. If OK,
test the heated seat sensor as described in this
group. If not OK, replace the faulty seat back cover.
HEATED SEAT SENSOR
DESCRIPTION
The heated seat temperature sensor is a Negative
Temperature Coefficient (NTC) thermistor. One tem-
perature sensor is used for each seat, and is inte-
grated into the seat cushion heating element.
DIAGNOSIS & TESTING - HEATED SEAT
SENSOR
For complete circuit diagrams, refer toWiring
Diagrams.
(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable. Disconnect the 4-way heated seat cushion ele-
ment wire harness connector from the power seat
wire harness. The power seat wire harness connec-
tors for the seat cushion and seat back heating ele-
ments are secured to a bracket located under the
rear edge of the seat cushion frame.
(2) Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance
between the seat sensor circuit and the seat temper-
ature sensor input circuit cavities of the 4-way
heated seat cushion element wire harness connector.
The sensor resistance should be between 2 kilohms
at 15É C (60É F) and 200 kilohms at 30É C (85É F). If
not OK, replace the faulty seat cushion cover trim
and sensor unit.
PASSENGER HEATED SEAT
SWITCH
DESCRIPTION
The heated seat switches are mounted in the
instrument panel center bezel (Fig. 5). The two three-
position rocker-type switches, one switch for each
front seat, are incorporated into one large switch
assembly that also includes the hazzard, rear window
wiper and washer switches. The heated seat switches
provide a resistor multiplexed signal to the Body
Control Module (BCM) through separate hard wired
circuits. Each switch has an Off, Low, and High posi-
tion so that both the driver and the front seat pas-
senger can select a preferred seat heating mode.
Each switch has two Light-Emitting Diodes (LED)
which light to indicate that the heater for the seat is
turned on.
The heated seat switches and their LEDs cannot
be repaired. If either switch or LED is faulty or dam-
aged, the entire switch assembly must be replaced.
OPERATION
There are three positions that can be selected with
each of the heated seat switches: Off, Low, or High.
