CAMRY ± NEW FEATURES 38
2. Features of 5S-FNE Engine
Features of the 5S-FNE engine are listed below.
Item
Features
Performance
High compression ratio is used.
High lift camshaft is used.
Low back pressure muffler is used.
Fuel Economy
High compression ratio is used.
Valve spring load has been reduced.
Low-friction. TiN (titanium nitride) coated valve lifters has been adopted.
Low Emission
A fuel injection system containing gas injectors has been adopted.
Because the fuel is in the gaseous state, it does not come in contact with
the wall surface, making optimal air-fuel ratio control possible
immediately after the engine has been started.
Precision air-fuel ratio feedback control that uses an air-fuel ratio sensor
and a heated oxygen sensor has been adopted.
Two catalytic converters designed exclusively for the natural gas engine
have been adopted: the WU-TWC (Warm Up Three-Way Catalytic
Converter) and the TWC (Three-Way Catalytic Converter).
Other Features
Highly rigid pistons have been adopted to accommodate the high
compression ratio.
A CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) pressure regulator that precisely
regulates the CNG has been adopted.
A large-bore delivery pipe and fuel hose with minimal internal conduit
resistance have been adopted.
The electro magnetic fuel shutoff valve is added on the delivery pipe.
A fuel pressure sensor that corrects the fuel injection volume and a fuel
temperature sensor have been provided on the delivery pipe.
The starting performance of the engine at low temperatures has been
ensured by increasing the volume of the airflow of the IAC (Idle Air
Control).
Materials that excel in wear resistance have been adopted on the valves
and valve seats for both the intake and exhaust.
Rust-resistant spark plugs have been adopted.
Aluminum lining and carbon fiber have been adopted in the fuel tank.
For the fuel gauge, a fuel tank fuel temperature sensor and a fuel pipe fuel
pressure sensor have been adopted.

3. Engine Proper
General
The cylinder head and the pistons have been changed for the CNG application.
Cylinder Head
Materials that excel in wear resistance have been adopted on the valve seats for both the intake and exhaust.
The shape of the holes into which the injectors mount has been changed to accommodate the injectors de-
signed exclusively for the CNG application.
The shape of water jacket around plug has been modified to prevent the deformation.
Piston
To achieve a high compression ratio, the shape of the top of the piston has been changed and pin boss hole
with taper has been adopted.
An additional surface treatment has been provided to improve heat resistance.
The material has been changed to increase rigidity.

OUTLINE OF NEW FEATURES
The Camry is a high-quality family sedan with advanced technology and sporty performance. The following
changes are made for the 2001 model year.
1. 5S-FE Engine
The 5S-FE engine that are equipped on the '00 California specification models, which comply with the U-
LEV (Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle) requirements, have now been provided on the all models.
2. 1MZ-FE Engine
The 1MZ-FE engine that are equipped on the '00 California specification models, which comply with the
LEV (Low Emission Vehicle) requirements, have now been provided on the all models with the automatic
transaxle.
3. Brake
The size of front brake disc on 5S-FE engine model of CE grade has been changed from usual 255 mm (10.0
in.) for the 14-inch wheel to 275 mm (10.8 in.) for the 15-inch wheel.
4. Seat
A seat heater is established as an option to the driver seat and front passenger seat of the vehicle with leather
seats for Canada, thus improved the heating performance in the cold districts.
5. Internal Trunk Release Handle
An internal trunk release handle is included inside the trunk in case a person inadvertently locks oneself with-
in the trunk and needs to free oneself.
The handle is made of phosphorecent so that it is visible in the trunk for a while even after the trunk has been
closed.

(b) Lift the cylinder head from the dowels on the cylinder
block, and place the cylinder head on wooden blocks
on a bench.
HINT: If the cylinder head is difficult to lift off, pry
between the cylinder head and cylinder block with a
screwdriver.
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces
of the cylinder head and cylinder block.
2. REMOVE VALVES
(a) Using SST, compress the valve spring and remove the
2 keepers.

(b) Remove the spring retainer, valve spring, valve and
spring seat.

1. REMOVE VALVE LIFTERS AND SHIMS
HINT: Arrange the valves, valve springs, spring seats
and spring retainers in correct order. HINT: Arrange the valve lifters and shims in correct
order.

(d) Check the valve overall length.
Standard overall length:
Intake
97.60 mm (3.8425 in.)
Exhaust
98.45 mm (3.8760 in.)
Minimum overall length:
Intake
97.1 mm (3.823 in.)
Exhaust
98.0 mm (3.858 in.)
If the overall length is less than minimum, replace the
valve.
(b) Check the valve seating position.
Apply a light coat of prussian blue (or white lead) to
the valve face. Lightly press the valve against the
seat. Do not rotate valve.
(c) Check the valve face and seat for the following:
If blue appears 360 around the face, the valve is
concentric. If not, replace the valve. (e) Check the surface of the valve stem tip for wear.
If the valve stem tip is worn, resurface the tip with a
grinder or replace the valve.
NOTICE: Do not grind off more than minimum.
8. INSPECT AND CLEAN VALVE SEATS
(a) Using a 45 carbide cutter, resurface the valve seats.
Remove only enough metal to clean the seats.

ACCESSORIES
DESCRIPTION
The new Camry includes the accessory systems shown in the below.
System
Outline
Power Window System
The power window system includes one±touch auto down and key±off opera-
tion functions. The one±touch auto down function automatically opens the
driver 's door window fully. The key±off operation function makes it possible
to operate the power windows for approximately 45 seconds after the igni-
tion key is turned to the ACC or LOCK position, if the front doors are not
opened.
The basic construction and operation of this system are the same as in the
previous model.
Door Lock Control System
This system has a ªkey±linked lock and unlock functionº and a ªkey±confine
prevention functionº. All doors can be locked and unlocked simultaneously
by a key operation at the front right or left foor. (The key needs to be oper-
ated twice to unlock all the doors at the driver's door.) If the door lock opera-
tion is performed when one of the front doors is open and the ignition key is
inserted in the key cylinder, doors are unlocked automatically to prevent the
ignition key from being left inside the vehicle.
The basic construction and operation are the same as in the previous model.
Wireless Door Lock Remote Con-
trol System
A remote control system in which the lock and unlock functions of all doors
and panic alarm function can be controlled by the signals emitted from a
transmitter is adopted. The transmitter is also provided with a 2±step unlock
function to unlock all the doors by pressing the switch twice.
The basic construction and operation are the same as in the '96 Avalon.
However, certain functions have been changed. For details, see page 107.
Theft Deterrent System
When an attempt is made to forcibly enter the vehicle or open the hood or
trunk lid without a key, or when the battery terminals are removed and re-
connected, this system sounds the horn and flashes the headlights and tail-
lights for about 1 minute to alert the owner. At the same time, it locks all the
doors and electronically disconnects the starter.
The basic operation is the same as in the '96 Avalon.
Power Seat
As in the previous model, the front seats are power assisted by electric mo-
tors so that the seat positions can be adjusted easily by a simple switch op-
eration.
The basic construction and operation are the same as in the previous model.
