INTERIOR
 KEY REMINDER SYSTEM
All vehicles have a key reminder system as standard equipment. When the ignition key is left inserted in the ignition
key cylinder at ACC or LOCK positioon and the driver's door is opened, this system sounds a warning tone to remind
the driver to remove the ignition key.
 SRS AIRBAG
For all models, the new Camry has as standard equipment a driver's airbag in the steering wheel pad and a front
passenger airbag located in the instrument panel above the glove box.
 CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM
The cruise control system is standard equipment on the LE and XLE grade model and an option on the CE grade
models. The main switch and control switch are on the a single lever, which is installed on the steering wheel and
can be operated easily.
 ILLUMINATED ENTRY SYSTEM
An illuminated entry system is standard equipment on the LE and XLE models. This system makes it easy to let
the Camry in and out at night, etc.
On the LE grade model, the ignition key cylinder illumination is turned on automatically when the door is opened.
When the door is closed, the ignition key cylinder illumination remains on for approximately 5 seconds, then goes
off automatically.
On the XLE grade model, the illuminated entry system turns on the dome light and ignition key cylinder
illumination for approximately 15 seconds after either door is closed when passengers are entering or leaving the
vehicle. While these lights are on for 15 seconds, if the ignition switch is turned to the ACC or ON position, or if
all doors are locked, the dome light and ignition key cylinder illuminatioons go off immediately.

SRS Airbag
The SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) airbag is provided for the driver
and front passenger. The SRS airbag has been designed to lessen the shock to
the head and chest of the driver and front passenger in the event of a frontal
impact collision as a supplement to the seat belt.
A 1±sensor type airbag system is used in which the detection of decelera-
tion during a collision as well as control of the airbag system is accom-
plished by the airbag sensor assembly.
The basic construction and operation are the same as in the '96 Avalon.
However, the inflator for front passsenger and airbag sensor assembly have
been changed.
For details, see page 111.
Cruise Control System
Once it has been set at a desired vehicle speed, this system automatically
adjusts the engine throttle position to maintain the vehicle speed at the de-
sired speed without operating the acceleration pedal.
The basic construction and operation are the same as in the previous model.
However, in the new model, a new type acutator has been adopted. Also, the
functions of the cruise control ECU has been changed. For details, see page
116.
Moon Roof
The moon roof is a tilt±up and sliding type the same as in the previous mod-
el. This system includes ªkey±off operationº, which is the same as with the
power window system. The new model offers an additional ªone±touch slide
openº function which enables the moon roof to fully open when the slide
switch is pressed toward the opening side for a few seconds.
Electrical Remote Control Mirror
The electrical remote control mirrors used in the previous model are also
used in the new model. Also, the internal heater to remove water drops from
the mirror surface is provided.
Key Reminder System
When the driver's door is opened with the ignition key in the ACC or LOCK
position, this system sounds a buzzer to warn the driver that the ignition key
has not been removed.
The basic construction and operation are the same as in the previous model.

The MCV20L-CEPNKK model has been discontinued.
2. Interior Equipment
An extensible assist grip has been newly provided for the front passenger.
3. 5S-FE Engine
ORVR (On-Board Refueling Vapor Recovery) System has been adopted.
4. 1MZ-FE Engine
The 1MZ-FE engine with automatic transaxle on the California specification model uses the air-fuel ratio
sensor and the WU-TWC (Warm Up-Three-Way Catalytic Converters) to reduce exhaust emissions.
5. Body
The cross section shape of the outside windshield moulding has been changed to reduce the wind noise.
The front door window glass has been increased in thickness to reduce the amount of noise transmitted
from the outside of the vehicle.
Front seat belt with pretensioner and force limiter has been adopted.
6. Engine Immobiliser System
An engine immobiliser system has been newly provided to help improve the vehicle's theft prevention perfor-
mance.
7. Theft Deterrent System

SRS SIDE AIRBAG
1. General
In conjunction with the energy absorbing doors, the SRS side airbags have been designed to help reducing
the impact energy that is transmitted to the driver and front passenger in the event of a side collision. In
a side collision, the side airbag sensor detects the shock and if the side-to-side shock is greater that a speci-
fied value, the airbags stored in the seat back for the driver and the front passenger inflate instantly to help
reducing the likelihood of the driver's or front passenger's arm and chest directly hitting the door trim.
Each
SRS side airbag is independent of the other.
An electrical type
SRS side airbag, in which the side airbag is activated by the ignition signal emitted by
the airbag sensor assembly, has been adopted.

System Diagram
The activation processes of the SRS side airbag is as illustrated below.

LOCKING AND UNLOCKING WITH POW-
ER DOOR LOCK SWITCH
Push the switch.
To lock: Push the switch on the front side.
To unlock: Push the switch on the rear
side.
All the doors lock or unlock simultaneous-
ly.
REAR DOOR CHILD±PROTECTORS
Move the lock lever to the ºLOCKº
position as shown on the label.
This feature allows you to lock a rear
door so it can be opened from the outside
only, not from inside. We recommend us-
ing this feature whenever small children
are in the vehicle.
CAUTION
Before driving, be sure that the doors
are closed and locked, especially
when small children are in the ve-
hicle. Along with the proper use of
seat belts, locking the doors helps
prevent the driver and passengers
from being thrown out from the ve-
hicle during an accident. It also helps
prevent the doors from being opened
unintentionally.

OPERATING THE PASSENGERS' WIN-
DOWS
Use the switches on the passengers'
doors. The driver 's door also has
switches that control the passengers'
windows.
The window moves as long as you hold
the switch.
To open: Push down the switch.
To close: Pull up the switch.
If you push in the window lock button on
the driver 's door, the passengers' windows
cannot be operated.
CAUTION
To avoid serious personal injury, you
must do the following.

Always make sure the head, hands
and other parts of the body of all
occupants are kept completely in-
side the vehicle before you close
the power windows. If someone's
neck, head or hands gets caught in
a closing window, it could result in
a serious injury. When anyone
closes the power windows, be sure
that they operate the windows safe-
ly.

When small children are in the ve-
hicle, never let them use the power
window switches without supervi-
sion. Use the window lock button to
prevent them from making unex-
pected use of the switches.

Never leave small children alone in
the vehicle, especially with the igni-
tion key still inserted. They could
use the power window switches and
get trapped in a window. Unat-
tended children can become in-
volved in serious accidents.

vehicle.
3. Close and lock all the doors, trunk and
hood.
The indicator light will come on when all
the doors, trunk and hood are closed and

three ways:
Turn the ignition key from the ºLOCKº
to ºONº position.

Unlock any of the doors with the key
or wireless remote control transmitter.
