VEHICLE
CARE---------------------------------------------------
Maintenance
Yo ur vehicle has been designed to help
keep maintenance requirements to a mini
mum.
However. a certa in amount of regular main
tenance is still necessary to assure your ve
hic le's safety, economy and reliabili ty.
c£> By regularly maintaining your
vehicle, you help make sure that
emission standards are maintai ned,
thus minimizing adverse effects on
the envir onment.
For detailed vehicle maintenance consult
your Maintenance booklet.
Under difficult operating condi
tions, for example at extremely low out
side temperatures, in very dusty regions,
when towing a trailer very frequently, etc.,
some service work should be performed
between the intervals specified.
This applies particularly to:
• oil changes, and
• cleaning or replacing the air filter.
228 Important
considerations for
you and your vehicle:
The increasing use of electr onics, sophisti
cated fuel injection and emission control
systems, and the generally increasing tech
nical complexity of today's automobiles,
have steadily reduced the scope of mainte
nance and repairs which can be carried out
by vehicle owners. Also, safety and en
vironmental concerns place very strict
limi ts on the nature of repairs and adjust
ments to engine and transmission parts
which an owner can perform . Main
tenance, adjustments and repairs usu
ally require special tools, testing devices
and other equipment available to specially
trained workshop personnel in order to as
sure proper performance, reliability and
safety of the vehicle and its many systems.
Impr oper maintenan ce, adjustments and
repairs can impair the operation and reliabil
ity of your vehicle and even void your ve
hicle warranty. Therefore, proof of servicing
in accordance with the maintenance
schedule may be a condition for upholding
a possible warranty claim made within the
warranty period.
Above all, operational safety can be ad
versely affected, creating unnecessary
risks for you and your passengers.

HICLE CARE---------------------------------------------------
Engine oil
Specification and viscosity
Yo ur engine was factory filled with an all
season high quality engine oil. If you need to
add oil between oil changes, use any high
quality petroleum- or synthetic-based oil
with correct specifications.
The following terms must appear on the oil
conta iner singly or in combination with oth
er designations:
- API Service SJ
- ACEA A2 or ACEA A3
Engine oils are graded according to their vis
cosity. The proper grade to be used in your
engine depends on existing climatic or sea
sonal conditions.
The engine oil which was first put into your
engine has a viscosity grade of SAE OW--30.
You can use this oil over all temperature
ranges for normal driving. If engine oil vis
costy grade SAE OW--30 is not available, you
can also use SAE 5W-30 or SAE 5W-40.
See your authorized Audi Dealer tor more in
formation regarding oil for your vehicle.

Engine oil identification symbol
Oils of the proper qualityforyour vehicle will
be identified with a new "starburst" sym
bol A. The starburst symbol indicates that
the oil has been certified by the American
Petr oleum Institute (API). Another
oil identi fication symbol B could be
added to the oil container to help you select
the correct oil.
1 - The top portion indicates the oil quality
by API designations.
2 - The center portion shows the SAE oil
viscosity grade.
3- The lower portion indicates that the oil
has fuel saving capabilities.
Note
Look for one of these symbols on the
front of the oil container. and use
only oils that display these symbols.
Engine oil additives
Audi does not recommend the use of
oil additives. They may adversely af
fect your New Vehicle Warranty.

plug with your fingers, stay as far
away as possible. Always keep
your forearm parallel to the
ground to help prevent hot oil
from running down your arm.
• Drain the oil into a container de
signed for this purpose, one large
enough to hold at least the total
amount of oil in your engine. ,A
WARNING continued
• Engine oil is poisonous. Keep it
well out of the reach of children.
• Continuous contact with used
engine oil is harmful to your skin.
Always protect your skin by wash
ing thoroughly with soap and wa
ter.
BefoN changing your oil, first
make sure you know where you
can properly dispose of the old oil.
Always dispose of used engine oil
proper ly. Do not dump it on garden
soil, wooded areas, Into open
streams or down sewage drains.
Recycle used engine oi l by taking it
to a used engine oil collection facil
ity in your area, or contact a service
station.

specifications and dimensions as the origi
nal equipment battery. Specifications are
listed on the battery housing.
When installing the battery, make sure the
ignition and all electrical consumers are
switched off.
r.Gb. Because of the problem of proper di
sposal of a battery, we
recommend that you have your au
thorized Audi Dealer change the
battery for you. Batteries contain
sulfuric acid and lead and must al
ways be disp osed of properly ob
serving all environmental regula
tions. Air
cleaner
A dir ty air cleaner element not only reduces
the engine output and increases fuel con
sumption considerably but can also cause
premature engine wear.
Normally, it is not necessary to service the
air cleaner more often than recommended
in the Maintenance booklet. If the vehicle is
driven on very dusty roads, the air cleaner
must be serviced more frequently, even dai
ly.
If your air cleaner element must be
changed mora frequently, we rec
ommend that you have the air clean
er serviced by your authorized Audi
Dealer or a qualified workshop.
The air cleaner element must never

Spark plugs
Spark plugs are replaced during the Audi
scheduled Maintenance Service.
If you have to replace the spark plugs be
tween the Audi Maintenance services, be
sure to note the following:
• Engine, spark plugs and the ignition sys
tem are matched to each other. To avoid
faulty operation or engine damage, use only
Original Audi spark plugs. It is especially im
portant to note the number of electrodes on
the spark plug and the heat value.
• Since spark plug specifications may
change for technical reasons during a model
year, we recommend that you obtain your
spark plugs from an authorized Audi Dealer,
who has the latest information.
Always heed all WARNINGS
on page 232. Belts
Ribbed V-Belt
The radiator fan, hydraulic pump (power
steering), alternator and air conditioner
compressor are driven by one V-belt.
The installed V-belt conforms to the highest
quality requirements. The V-belt adjusts its
own tension.
Replacing of the V-belt should be
performed by your authorized Audi
Dealer or a qualified workshop.
When replacing a belt, it is not sufficient to
use just any belt of the same size. For safe
and reliable operation, use only Genuine
Audi V-belts specially designed for your ve
hicle. The correct belts can be obta ined at
your authorized Audi Dealer. W
ARNING
To prevent serious personal inju
ries stay well clear of the V-belt,
The radiator fan and the V-belt
driven accessories when the en
gine is running. The V-belt will be
inspected and replaced by your au
thorized Audi Dealer during a
scheduled Maintenance Service.

lira
service life
The service life of your tires depends for the
most part on the following factors:
lire pressure
Requir ed cold tire inflation pressures are
listed on a sticker inside the fuel filler flap or
on the rear passenger's door pillar (right
side) -depending on the model.
W ARNING
• Incorrect tire pressures can lead
to a serious or fatal accident:
• Incorrect tire pressures cause
increased tire wear and can affect
handling of the vehicle.
• Incorrect pressures can also
lead to sudden tire failure and
deflati on, causing loss of vehicle
contr ol.
c£' Low tire pressures increase fuel
consumption, which is detri
mental to the environment. Tire
pressures should be checked at least
once a month and always before a long trip.
Tire pressures are very important,
particularly when the vehicle is driv
en at higher speeds.
If you are going to be driving at higher
speeds (a lot of expressway driving), then it
is rec ommended to increase the tire pres
sure by 5 psi (0.3 bar).
Always check tire pressures when the tires
are cold. When the tires are warm, the pres
sure will be highe r. Do not reduce the
pressure of warm tires.
Don't forget to check the spare wheel. The
inflation pressure is marked on the tire side
wall.
Use an accurate tire pressure gauge when
checking inflation pressures. Never exceed
the maximum tire inflation pressure listed
on the tire sidewall. Cold tire inflation pres
sure means: the vehicle has been standing
for at least 3 hours or driven for less than
1 mile (1 km).
Do not forget to replace the valve stem caps
after checking tire pressure. VE
HICL E CA RE
Driving habits
Fast cornering, heavy acceleration and hard
braking all increase tire wear.
Wheel balancing
The wheels on new vehicles are balanced.
When driving, however, various conditions
can cause a wheel to become unbalanced.
This may be noticed as vibrations in the
steering.
Since tire imbalance can cause wear on the
steeri ng, suspension and tires, you should
have your wheels re-balanced. A wheel
should always be balanced if a new tire has
been mounted or a tire was repaired.
Incorrect wheel alignment
Incorrect wheel alignment causes exces
sive and uneven tire wear, impairing the
safety ofth e veh ide. If you notice excessive
tire wear, contact your authorized Audi
Dealer.

VEHICLE
CARE----------------------------------------------------
Tire wear
The original tires on your vehicle have built
in wear indicators. They are molded into the
bottom of the tread grooves and will appear
as approximately 1h inch (12 mm) bands
when the tire tread depth wears down to
1 /1 6 inches (1.6 mm). Depending on the tire
man ufacturer, there are six to eight wear in
dicators evenly spaced around the circum
ference of the tire. Markings on the sides of
the tires (e.g. the letters "TWI" or a triangle)
show the locations of the wear indicators.
254 When the
indicators appear in two or more
adjacent grooves, it is time to replace the
tires. We recommend, however, that you do
not let the tires wear down this far. Worn
tires cannot grip the road surface properly,
and are even less effective on wet roads.
W ARNING
• Worn tires can lead to a serious
accident.
• lires showing cuts. bruises or
other damage may lead to tire fail
ure. sudden deflation and loss of
vehicle control.
• Since worn tires do not grip the
road surface properly when the ve
hicle is driven on wet roads, the ve
hicle may tend to hydroplane
sooner. I
BBD-2.02.
I
Tire rotation
If the front tires are worn more than rear
tires, then you must rotate the front tires
with the rear tires as shown in the illustra
tion. By doing this, all tires will have approxi
mately the same service life.
Tires should always remain on same
side of vehicle.
