HFC-134a (R-134a) Service Tools and
Equipment
Never mix HFC-134a refrigerant and/or its specified lubricant with CFC-12 (R-12) refrigerant and/or its lubri-
cation oil.
Separate and non-interchangeable service equipment must be used for each type of refrigerant/lubricant.
Refrigerant container fittings, service hose fittings and service equipment fittings (equipment which handles
refrigerant and/or lubricant) are different between CFC-12 (R-12) and HFC-134a (R-134a). This is to avoid
mixed use of the refrigerants/lubricant.
Adapters that convert one size fitting to another must never be used: refrigerant/lubricant contamination will
occur and compressor failure will result.

DESCRIPTION
General
The variable compressor is basically a swash plate type that changes piston stroke in response to the
required cooling capacity.
The tilt of the swash plate allows the piston's stroke to change so that refrigerant discharge can be continu-
ously changed from 6 to 125 cm
3(0.366 to 7.63 cu in).

Maintenance of Lubricant Quantity in
Compressor
The lubricant used to lubricate the compressor circulates through
the system with the refrigerant. Add lubricant to compressor
when replacing any component or after a large gas leakage
occurred. It is important to maintain the specified amount.
If lubricant quantity is not maintained properly, the following mal-
functions may result:
lLack of lubricant: May lead to a seized compressor
lExcessive lubricant: Inadequate cooling (thermal exchange
interference)

CHECKING AND ADJUSTING
Adjust the lubricant quantity according to the flowchart shown
below.START
Can lubricant return operation be per-
formed?
lA/C system works properly.
lThere is no evidence of a large amount
of lubricant leakage.
No
EYe s
Perform lubricant return operation, proceeding as follows:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Start engine, and set the following conditions:
lTest condition
Engine speed: Idling to 1,200 rpm
A/C or AUTO switch: ON
Blower speed: Max. position
Temp. control: Optional [Set so that intake air temperature
is 25 to 30ÉC (77 to 86ÉF).]
2. Next item is for CSV613 compressor. Connect the manifold
gauge, and check that the high pressure side pressure is588
kPa (5.9 bar, 6 kg/cm
2, 85 psi) or higher.
If less than the reference level, attach a cover to the front face
of the condenser to raise the pressure.
3. Perform lubricant return operation for about 10 minutes.
4. Stop engine.
CAUTION:
If excessive lubricant leakage is noted, do not perform the lubri-
cant return operation.
Should the compressor be replaced?
No Yes

(Go to next page.)
Is there any part to be replaced?
(Evaporator, condenser, liquid tank or in
case there is evidence of a large amount
of lubricant leakage.)
No
EYe s
After replacing any of the following major components, add the correct
amount of lubricant to the system.
Amount of lubricant to be added
*1: If compressor is replaced, addition of lubricant is included in the
flow chart.
*2: If refrigerant leak is small, no addition of lubricant is needed.

General maintenance includes those items which should be checked during normal day-to-day operation of
the vehicle. They are essential if the vehicle is to continue functioning correctly. Owners can perform the
checks and inspections themselves, or they can be carried out by a NISSAN dealer.
Item Reference pages
OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE
The maintenance items listed here should be checked periodically, unless otherwise specified.
TiresCheck the pressure with a gauge weekly when at a service station, including the spare,
and adjust to the specified pressure if necessary. Check carefully for damage, cuts or exces-
sive wear.
Windshield wiper bladesCheck for cracks or wear if not functioning correctly.
Doors and engine hoodCheck that all doors, the engine hood, the trunk lid and back door
function correctly. Also ensure that all latches lock securely. Lubricate if necessary. Make sure
that the secondary latch prevents the hood from opening when the primary latch is released.
When driving in areas using road salt or other corrosive materials, check for lubrication more
often.MA-54
Tire rotationTires should be rotated every 10,000 km (6,000 miles). MA-53
INSIDE THE VEHICLE
The maintenance items listed here should be checked on a regular basis, such as when per-
forming periodic maintenance, cleaning the vehicle etc.
LightsMake sure that the headlights, stop lights, tail lights, turn signal lights, and other lights
are all operating correctly and installed securely. Also check headlight aim.
Warning lights and buzzers/chimesMake sure that all warning lights and buzzers/chimes
are functioning correctly.
Steering wheelCheck that it has the specified play. Check for changes in the steering
operation, such as excessive free play, hard steering or strange noises.
Free play: Less than 35 mm (1.38 in.)
Seat beltsCheck that all parts of the seat belt system (e.g. buckles, anchors, adjusters and
retractors) operate properly and smoothly, and are installed securely. Check the belt webbing
for cuts, fraying, wear or damage.MA-54
UNDER THE HOOD AND VEHICLE
The maintenance items listed here should be checked periodically e. g. each time you check
the engine oil or refuel.
Windshield washer fluidCheck that there is adequate fluid in the tank.
Engine coolant levelCheck the coolant level when the engine is cold.
Engine oil levelCheck the level after parking the vehicle (on level ground) and turning off the
engine.MA-24 / MA-34 /

For warm and cold areas: 10W-30 is suit-
able. The use of 5W-30 can have a positive
effect on fuel economy (ACEA A1-98).
For hot areas: 20W-40 and 20W-50 are suit-
able.
For cold and warm areas: 10W-30 is prefer-
able for ambient temperatures above 20°C
( 4°F).
On turbocharger models, 5W-20 is not
recommended, and 5W-30 should be used
only below 0°C (32°F).
For hot areas: 20W-40 and 20W-50 are suit-
