
(c) If continuity is OK between cavity 62 and
cavity 1, repair open circuit between cavity 2 of the
stop lamp switch connector and ground.
(6) Using an ohmmeter, check continuity from cav-
ity 76 on PCM connector to ground with the trans-
mission in park or neutral. If no continuity, test TRS/
Park-Neutral switch and switch wiring
(7) Turn speed control and ignition switch OFF.
(8) Unplug the BLACK 40-way connector from the
Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
(9) Using an ohmmeter, check continuity from cav-
ity 3 of servo connector to cavity 5 on the PCM con-
nector.
(a) If continuity is OK, replace PCM. Check cir-
cuit for short to ground before replacing PCM.
(b) If no continuity, remove stop lamp switch
and conduct Stop Lamp Switch Test. If test fails,
adjust or replace as necessary.
(c) If switch passes, measure continuity from
cavity 4 of stop lamp switch connector to cavity 3
of servo connector. Repair open circuit if necessary.
(d) If continuity is OK, measure continuity from
cavity 3 of stop lamp switch to cavity 5 of PCM
connector. Repair open circuit as necessary.
(e) Install PCM connectors onto PCM and speed
control servo connector to servo.
VACUUM SUPPLY TEST
(1) Disconnect vacuum hose at the servo and
install a vacuum gauge in the hose (Fig. 9).
(2) Start engine and observe gauge at idle. Vac-
uum gauge should read at least ten inches of mer-
cury. Shut off engine, the vacuum should continue to
hold 10 inches of mercury.
(3) If vacuum does not meet this requirement,
check and correct the following vacuum leaks in the
vacuum lines, check valve, vacuum reservoir or poor
engine performance.
VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR
For diagnosis and testing of the Vehicle Speed Sen-
sor (VSS), refer to the appropriate Powertrain Diag-
nostic Procedures service manual. Also refer to the
DRB scan tool.
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
SPEED CONTROL SERVO
REMOVAL
(1) Disconnect electrical connector from servo.
(2) Disconnect vacuum hoses from servo
(3) Remove 2 nuts retaining cable to servo.
(4) Remove hair pin holding cable to servo.
INSTALLATION
(1) Install hairpin to cable at servo.
(2) Install 2 nuts at cable to servo and servo
bracket, tighten to 7 N´m (60 ins. lbs.).
(3) Connect electrical connector to servo.
(4) Connect vacuum hose to servo
SPEED CONTROL SWITCH
The speed control switches are mounted in the
steering wheel and wired through the clock spring
device under the airbag module (Fig. 1).
WARNING: IF REMOVAL OF AIRBAG MODULE IS
NECESSARY, REFER TO GROUP 8M, RESTRAINT
SYSTEMS.
REMOVAL
(1) Turn off ignition.
(2) Remove two screws from side of each switch.
(3) Rock switch away from airbag and steering
wheel.
(4) Disconnect two-way electrical connector.
(5) Repeat for the other switch.
INSTALLATION
For installation reverse above procedures.
STOP LAMP SWITCH
REMOVAL
Remove the switch from the bracket by depressing
the brake pedal and rotating the switch in a counter-
clockwise direction approximately 30 degrees. Pull
the switch rearward and remove from bracket. Dis-
connect wiring harness connector.
INSTALLATION
Before installing the switch, reset the adjustable
switch plunger by pulling on the plunger head until

the plunger reaches the end of its travel. A ratchet-
ing sound will be heard during this procedure.
Connect the wiring harness to the switch. Mount
the switch into the bracket by holding the switch
with the plunger facing forward in car. There is an
index key on the switch that mates with the bracket
slot at the top of the square hole. Align key and push
switch into square hole in bracket while depressing
the brake pedal. Once the switch is seated in the
hole, rotate clockwise approximately 30 degrees to
lock into place. The switch will automatically adjust
when the pedal is released. Pull back on the pedal to
assure correct adjustment.
SPEED CONTROL SERVO CABLE
REMOVAL
(1) Remove throttle control shield.
(2) Remove throttle clasp from the throttle body
lever.
(3) Remove speed control cable from throttle lever
by sliding clasp out hole used for throttle cable.
(4) Compress the retaining tabs on the cable and
slide cable out of bracket.
(5) Disconnect electrical connector from servo.
(6) Disconnect vacuum hose from servo
(7) Remove 2 nuts retaining bracket to servo.
(8) Remove push nuts holding cable housing to
servo.
(9) Remove retaining clip holding cable to servo.
INSTALLATION
(1) Install retaining clip to cable at servo.
(2) Slide cable bell housing over servo mounting
studs.
(3) Install servo mounting studs into bracket.
(4) Install 2 nuts at cable to servo and servo
bracket, tighten to 7 N´m (60 ins. lbs.).
(5) Connect electrical connector to servo.
(6) Connect vacuum hose to servo
(7) Slide cable into throttle cable bracket and
engage retaining tabs.
(8) Rotate the throttle lever forward to the wide
open position and install speed control cable clasp.
(9) Rotate the throttle lever forward to the wide
open position and install throttle cable clasp.
(10) Install throttle control shield. Tighten bolt to
5.6 N´m (50 in. lbs.).

GENERAL INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION
WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIR-
BAG, SEE GROUP 8M, RESTRAINT SYSTEMS FOR
AIRBAG REMOVAL PROCEDURES.
The turn signals are part of the multi-function
switch. Which contains:
²Electrical circuitry for turn signals
²Hazard warning switch
²Headlamp beam select switch
²Headlamp optical horn
The integrated switch assembly is mounted to the
left hand side of the steering column. When the
driver wishes to signal his intentions to change direc-
tion of travel, he moves the lever upward to cause
the right signals to flash and downward to cause the
left signals to flash. After completion of a turn the
system is deactivated automatically. As the steering
wheel returns to the straight ahead position, a can-
celing cam molded to the clockspring mechanism
comes in contact with the cancel actuator on the turn
signal multi-function switch assembly. The cam lobe,
pushing on the cancel actuator, returns the switch to
the off position.
If only momentary signaling such as indication of a
lane change is desired, the switch is actuated to a
left or right intermediate detent position. In this
position the signal lamps flash as described above,
but the switch returns to the OFF position as soon as
the lever is released.
When the system is activated, one of two indicator
lamps mounted in the instrument cluster flashes in
unison with the turn signal lamps, indicating to the
driver that the system is operating.
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
HAZARD WARNING SYSTEM
The hazard warning system is actuated by a slide
button located on the top of the steering column
between the steering wheel and the instrument
panel. The hazard switch is identified with a double
triangle on front of the button.
COMBINATION FLASHER
The turn signal flasher and the hazard warning
flasher are combined into one unit called a combina-
tion flasher (combo-flasher). The combo- flasher con-
trols the flashing of the hazard warning system and
the turn signal system. An inoperative bulb or incom-
plete turn signal circuit will cause the flasher rate to
double.
The combo-flasher is located on the fuse block. The
combo-flasher is black in color for ease of identifica-
tion (Fig. 1).

MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH
The multi-function switch contains electrical cir-
cuitry for turn signal, hazard warning, headlamp
beam select, headlamp optical horn. This integratedswitch assembly is mounted to the left hand side of
the steering column. Should any function of the
switch fail, the entire switch assembly must be
replaced. Refer to Multi-function Switch Test Table
for diagnosis.

LICENSE PLATE LAMP BULB
REMOVAL
(1) Remove screws holding license plate lamp to
rear bumper (Fig. 7).
(2) Separate lamp from bumper.
(3) Remove bulb socket from lamp.
(4) Pull bulb from socket.
INSTALLATION
Reverse the preceding operation.
UNDERHOOD LAMP BULB
REMOVAL
(1) Disconnect the wire harness connector from the
underhood lamp.
(2) Rotate the bulb counter-clockwise. Remove it
from the lamp socket.
INSTALLATION
(1) Insert the replacement bulb in the lamp base
socket and rotate it clockwise.
(2) Connect the wire harness connector.
DOME LAMP BULB
REMOVAL
(1) Insert a trim stick between the headliner and
dome lamp lens.
(2) Carefully pry downward on the four corners of
the lamp lens.
(3) Separate lamp lens from lamp.
(4) Grasp bulb and pull from lamp socket.
INSTALLATION
(1) Position bulb in socket and snap into place.
(2) Position lens on lamp and snap into place.
VISOR VANITY LAMP BULB
REMOVAL
(1) Lower visor.
(2) Insert a small flat bladed tool between the
lamp lens and lamp.
(3) Carefully pry lens outward.
(4) Remove bulb from socket.
INSTALLATION
(1) Position bulb in socket and snap into place.
(2) Position lens on lamp and snap into place.
REAR CARGO LAMP BULB
The trunk lamp snaps into the rear shelf panel
reinforcement under/below the package shelf.
REMOVAL
(1) Insert a trim stick or small flat blade between
the lamp lens and rear shelf reinforcement panel.
(2) Pry the lamp lens downward.
(3) Pull bulb from socket
INSTALLATION
(1) Push bulb into socket.
(2) Position the lamp in the rear shelf reinforce-
ment panel and snap into place.

(6) Verify headlamp alignment.
FRONT TURN SIGNAL LAMP BULB
REMOVAL
(1) Remove screws holding the park and turn sig-
nal lamp to the headlamp assembly.
(2) Separate the turn signal lamp from the head-
lamp module.
(3) Rotate front turn signal lamp socket one quar-
ter turn counter-clockwise.
(4) Pull socket from back of lamp.

(5) Pull bulb from socket (Fig. 4).
INSTALLATION
(1) Push bulb into socket.
(2) Insert socket into back of turn signal lamp.
(3) Rotate front turn signal socket clockwise one
quarter turn.
(4) Install front turn signal lamp onto vehicle.
(5) Verify lamp operation.
CITYLIGHT LAMP BULB
REMOVAL
(1) Pull citylight lamp socket from rubber bushing
in headlamp housing (Fig. 5).
(2) Rotate counterclockwise and pull bulb from
socket (Fig. 6).
INSTALLATION
(1) Position citylight lamp bulb to lamp socket.
(2) Push and twist bulb into socket.
(3) Push citylight lamp into bushing in headlamp
housing.
FOG LAMP BULB
REMOVAL
(1) Remove fog lamp assembly from fascia.
(2) Disengage fog lamp housing from bracket
assembly.
(3) Compress Wire Bulb Retainer (Fig. 7) on fog
lamp housing and pull away from lock tabs.
NOTE: Do not pull bulb from base.
(4) Disconnect Bulb Power and Ground Leads from
harness and bulb base. (Fig. 8).
INSTALLATION
CAUTION: Do not touch the glass of halogen
bulbs with fingers or other possibly oily surface,
reduced bulb life will result.
(1) Align locator tabs and insert new bulb into fog
lamp housing.
(2) Connect Bulb Ground Lead to bulb base.

HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH
The headlamp dimmer switch is incorporated into
the multi-function (turn signal) switch. Proper proce-
dures can be found in Group 8J, Turn Signal and

8W, Wiring Diagrams.
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY
REMOVAL
(1) Release hood latch and open hood.
(2) Remove headlamp horizontal aim cable from
retainer clip on radiator upper crossmember.
(3) Disengage wire connector from leveling motor.
(4) Remove bolts holding headlamp leveling motor
to the upper radiator crossmember.
(5) Remove plastic locking cap holding vertical lev-
eling cable into leveling motor arm.
(6) Separate leveling cable from motor arm.
(7) Rotate leveling cable case one quarter turn
counter-clockwise and separate cable from motor
bracket.
(8) Separate leveling motor and bracket from vehi-
cle.
(9) From between front fascia and headlamp
assembly, remove bolt holding outboard end of
assembly to fender.
(10) Remove bolts holding inboard end of assembly
to radiator closure panel.
(11) Remove bolts holding top of assembly to upper
crossmember (Fig. 1).(12) Disengage wire connector from headlamp and
parking lamp sockets.
(13) Separate headlamp assembly from vehicle.
INSTALLATION
(1) Position headlamp assembly to vehicle.
(2) Route headlamp leveling cables through open-
ing in radiator closure panel.
(3) Engage wire connector to headlamp and park-
ing lamp sockets.
(4) Install bolts to hold top of assembly to upper
crossmember.
(5) Install bolts to hold inboard end of assembly to
radiator closure panel.
(6) Install bolt to hold outboard end of assembly to
fender.
(7) Position leveling motor and bracket to vehicle.
(8) Insert leveling cable through opening in level-
ing motor bracket.
(9) Rotate leveling cable case one quarter turn
clockwise.
(10) Engage leveling cable to leveling motor arm.
(11) Install plastic locking cap to hold leveling
cable into motor arm.
(12) Install bolts to hold leveling motor to upper
radiator crossmember.
(13) Engage wire connector to leveling motor.
(14) Engage horizontal aim cable to retainer clip
on upper radiator crossmember.
