2. 2 RANGE TEST
Shift into the .2 range and, while driving with the accel-
erator pedal held constantly at the full throttle valve
opening position, check on the following points.
(a) Check to see that the 1 ± 2 up±shift takes place and
that the shift point conforms to it shown on the auto-
matic shift schedule. (See page AT±49) (f) Check for the lock±up mechanism.
(1) Drive in D range, O/D gear, at a steady speed
(lock±up ON) of about 70 km/h (43 mph).
(2) Lightly depress the accelerator pedal and check
that the engine rpm does. not change abruptly.
If there is a big jump in engine rpm, there is no
lock±up.
(b) While running in the 2 range and 2nd gear, re-
lease the accelerator pedal and check the en-
gine braking effect.
EVALUATION
If there is no engine braking effect:
Second coast brake is defective (d) While running in the D range, 2nd, 3rd and O/D
gears, check to see that the possible kick±
down vehicle speed limits for 2 ±1, 3 ±2 and
O/D ± 3 kickdowns conform to those indicated
on the automatic shift schedule. (See page
AT±49)
(e) Check for abnormal shock and slip at kick±down.
(c) Check for abnormal noise at acceleration and de-
celeration, and for shock at up±shift and down-
shift.

*2 Lock±up ºONº' point with closed throttle valve is at 64 ± 73 km/h (40 ± 45 mph).
*3 Lock±up ºOFFº point with closed throttle valve is at 60 ± 68 km/h (37 ± 42 mph).
*4 O/D ±3 down±shift is possible up to maximum speed.

(a) Apply compressed air into the passage of the case to
remove the piston.
HINT: Hold the piston so it is not slanted and blow with
the gun 'slightly away from the oil hole. 52. REMOVE PISTON RETURN SPRING
(a) Place SST, and compress the return springs evenly by
tightening the bolt gradually.

INSPECTION OF OVERDRIVE BRAKE
INSPECT DISCS, PLATES AND FLANGE
Check if the sliding surfaces of the discs, plates an,
flange are worn or burnt. If necessary, replace them.
HINT:
wIf the fining of the disc is exfoliated or discolored,
or even a part of the printed numbers are defaced,
replace all discs.
wBefore assembling new discs, soak them in ATF for
at least fifteen minutes.
DISASSEMBLY OF OVERDRIVE BRAKE
1. REMOVE PISTON RETURN SPRING
(a) While pushing the return spring, remove the snap
ring with a screwdriver.
(b) Remove the piston return spring.
3. REMOVE PISTON FROM DRUM
Apply compressed air to oil hole to remove the piston.
HINT: Blow with the gun slightly away from the oil
hole, and be careful that the piston does not tilt.
4. REMOVE O±RINGS
Remove the inner and outer O±rings from the piston. 2. REMOVE CUSHION PLATE, PLATES, DISCS AND

Diagnosis System
DESCRIPTION
1. A self±diagnosis function is. built into the electrical control
system. Warning is indicated by the overdrive OFF indicator.
HINT: Warning and diagnostic codes can be read only when
the overdrive switch is ON. If OFF, the overdrive OFF
indicator is lit continuously and will not blink.
(a) If a malfunction occurs within the speed sensors or sole-
noids, the overdrive OFF light will blink to warn the driver.
However, there will be no warning of a malfunction with
lock±up solenoid.
W The diagnostic code can be read by the number of
blinks of the overdrive OFF indicator when terminals
Tt and E1 are short±circuited. (See page AT± 191)
(c) The throttle position sensor or brake signal are not indicated,
but inspection can be made by checking the voltage at ter-
minal Tt of the check connector.
(d) The signals to each gear can be checked by measuring the
voltage at terminal Tt of the check connector while driving.
2. The diagnostic (malfunction) code is retained in memory by the
ECU and due to back±up voltage, is not canceled out when the
engine is turned off. Consequently, after repair, it is necessary
to turn the ignition switch off and remove the fuse EFI (15A)
(A540E) or DOME (20A)
(A540H) or disconnect the Engine and ECT ECU (A540E)
or ECT ECU (A540H) connector to cancel out the diagnostic
(malfunction) code. (See page AT±192)
HINT:
wLow battery voltage will cause faulty operation of the diag-
nosis system. Therefore, always check the battery first.
wUse a voltmeter and ohmmeter that have an impedance of
at least 10 k
/V.
CHECK O/D OFF INDICATOR LIGHT
1. Turn the ignition switch ON.
2. The O/D OFF light will come on when the O/D switch
placed at OFF.
3. When the O/D switch is set to ON, the O/D OFF light should go
out.
If the O/D OFF light flashes when the O/D switch is set to
ON, the electronic control system is faulty.

2. 2 RANGE TEST
Shift into the 2 range and, while driving with the accel-
erator pedal held constantly at the full throttle valve
opening position, push in one of the pattern selectors
and check or the following points.
(a) Check to see that the 1 ± 2 up±shift takes place and
that the shift point conforms to it shown on the auto-
matic shift schedule. (See page AT±230)
(b) While running in the 2 range and 2nd gear, release
the accelerator pedal and check the engine braking ef-
fect.
EVALUATION
If there is no engine braking effect:
w Second coast brake is defective (f) Check for the lock±up mechanism.
(1) Drive in D range, O/D gear, at a steady speed
(lock±up ON) of about 75 km/h (47 mph).
(2) Lightly depress the accelerator pedal and check
that the engine rpm does not change abruptly.
If there is a big jump in engine rpm, there is no
lock±up. (d) While running in the D range, 2nd, 3rd and O/D
gears, check to see that the possible kick±
down vehicle speed limits for 2 ± 1, 3 ± 2 and
O/D ± 3 kickdowns conform to those indicated
on the automatic shift schedule. (See page
AT±230)
(e) Check for abnormal shock and slip at kick±down.
(c) Check for abnormal noise at acceleration an4
deceleration, and for shock at up±shift and
down shift.

*: O/D switch OFF
HINT:
(1) Lock±up will not occur in 2nd gear unless the throttle valve opening is greater than 50%.
(2) There is no lock±up in the 2 and L ranges.
(3) In the following cases, the lock±up will be released regardless of the lock±up pattern.
wWhen the throttle is completely closed.
wWhen the brake light switch is ON.
(4) When the coolant. temp. is below 140
°F (60°C) (A540E) or 122°F (50°C) (A540H), the shift point is lower
than specified vehicle speed.
