leaving it unattended or illegally abando ning it, some other person may touch it
which could cause electrocution leading to serious injury.
Fuel
CAUTION
 The e-SKYACTIV PHEV can be driven on electricity, but depending on the driving
conditions and mode, the vehicle will be driven using the engine and will need to
be refueled. Check the remaining amount of fuel and replenish the fuel if
necessary.
Refer to How to Use the Mazda intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) on page 5-96.
 Depending on the vehicle usage conditions, fuel may remain in the tank for a long
period of time and the quality of the fuel may change. Refuel at least 25 L of fuel
every 12 months (total amount of refueling for 12 months is at least 25 L), as this
may affect parts of the fuel system and the engine.
 If the fuel has not been replenished for a certain period of time and the quality of
the fuel in the fuel tank is expected to change, a message is displayed in the
instrument cluster when the hybrid system is started. When a certain amount of
fuel is consumed, the message displayed in the instrument cluster is no longer
displayed.

How to Use the
e-SKYACTIV PHEV
Switching the Drive Mode
You can switch the drive mode of the
hybrid system by operating the switch.
TOWING mode/SPORT mode/
NORMAL mode/EV mode/
OFF-ROAD mode
Refer to How to Use the Mazda
intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) on
page 5-96.
CHARGE Mode
The engine is used as a generator, and
the vehicle is driven while charging the
high voltage battery.
1. Start the hybrid system.
2.
When CHARGE mode is activated, the
CHARGE mode indicator light
in
the instrument cluster turns on.
Power is generated to the preset target
charge amount, and when the target
charge amount is reached, power is
generated to maintain it.
NOTE
Switching to CHARGE mode may not
be possible depending on the
conditions of the hybrid system.
When power consumption is high
due to the vehicle driving conditions,
outside air temperature, or when the
air conditioner is used, charging may
take longer than usual or may not
occur.
When the vehicle is driven while in
CHARGE mode, the engine operates
to generate electricity, therefore fuel
consumption may increase
compared to when driving the
vehicle in a mode other than
CHARGE mode.
If the vehicle power is switched OFF
while switching the mode to
CHARGE mode, the CHARGE mode
will be canceled the next time the
vehicle power is switched ON.
When pressing the charge mode
switch while the Mazda intelligent
Drive Select (Mi-Drive) is in EV
mode, the Mi-Drive switches to
NORMAL mode and the vehicle is
driven in CHARGE mode.
The mode may not be able to switch
to CHARGE mode when the fuel is
low.
The target charge amount can be
changed.

POWER gauge
Displays the energy used by the motor
or engine for driving. The higher the
output, the more the power meter
needle moves to the right. The more
the power meter needle moves to the
right, the easier it is to start the engine.
CHARGE gauge
Displays the energy charged in the high
voltage battery by regenerative braking.
The higher the charge, the more the
power meter needle moves
downward.
Boost indicator light
The light turns on when the energy
used for driving is at maximum output.
EV drive indicator light
The light turns on when the vehicle is
being driven using only the motor.
CHARGE mode indicator light
The light turns on when the vehicle is
being driven in CHARGE mode.
Approaching Vehicle Audible System
When the vehicle is driven at low
speeds, a warning sound is
automatically activated to warn that a
vehicle is approaching.
1. Start the hybrid system.
2. Shift the selector lever to a position other than P.
A warning sound is activated and stops
when the vehicle speed reaches 41
km/h (26 mph) or faster.

Switch to Start in EV Mode
The hybrid system can be changed to
start in EV mode.

Switching the Regenerative Braking
Strength
The regenerative braking strength can
be changed.
Refer to the Settings section in the
Mazda Connect Owner's Manual.
For Eco-Friendly and Economical
Driving
Using the Drive Mode
EV mode is mainly used in urban areas,
while NORMAL mode is used in
suburban areas and on expressways,
which leads to savings in electricity and
fuel consumption.
By actively using regenerative braking
to charge the high voltage battery, it is
possible to increase the EV travel
distance and to reduce fuel
consumption when driving the vehicle
in a mode other than EV mode.
To extend cruising distance
The electrical power consumption
while driving can be reduced and the
cruising distance can be extended by
doing the following operations.
With the charge connector
connected, turn on the climate
control system to provide a
comfortable temperature in the
cabin before driving.
When driving during cold
temperatures, use the seat warmer or
steering warmer instead of the
climate control system.
Adjust the climate control system to
a moderate airflow and temperature
setting.
Refrain from using the defogger
under conditions other than when a
window is fogged or frozen.
By maintaining a sufficient distance
between vehicles and using the
regenerative braking well, more
electrical power can be charged to
the high voltage battery.
To extend the life of the high voltage
battery
The high voltage battery life changes
depending on the vehicle storage
conditions or charging method.
To extend the life of the high voltage
battery, be careful of the following.
(Charging the battery)
Avoid unnecessary, frequent
charging.
Only charge the battery with as much
power as needed, and do not always
fully charge the battery. The
maximum charge limit can be set.
Refer to Convenient Ways to Use of
Charging on page 5-118.
(Parking the vehicle)
Do not park the vehicle in a place
where the ambient temperature is
extremely high or low.
Do not leave the vehicle while the
remaining high voltage battery power
is extremely low.
If the [Battery Cooling] operation notification is displayed on the
center display after driving the
vehicle, select [Activate].

Remaining Charge and Temperature
of the High Voltage Battery
If the high voltage battery level is low
or the high voltage battery temperature
is low, the vehicle speed may not
increase even if the accelerator pedal is
depressed because the motor output is
restricted. Check the contents
displayed in the instrument cluster and
the remaining amount of power in the
high voltage battery before driving.
(Battery cooling)
If the high voltage battery temperature
is high after driving the vehicle, it is
possible to cool the high voltage
battery while the vehicle is parked to
extend the life of the high voltage
battery. If the Excessive Battery
Te m p e ra t u r e notification is displayed
on the center display after driving the
vehicle, select Start to start the battery
cooling.
NOTE
Because the electrical power of the
high voltage battery is used by the
battery cooling , we recommend that
the charge connector is connected
while the battery cooling is operating.

On roads with high driving resistance
such as deep-snowy or sandy roads,
or on steep slopes, a high load is
applied to the transmission, causing
excessive heat generation. Under
these driving conditions, pay
attention to the following points.
 Stop and hold the vehicle on a
steep slope with the brake pedal,
not the accelerator pedal. Do not
use the accelerator pedal to
prevent the vehicle from rolling.
 Avoid using the accelerator pedal
and the brake pedal at the same
time.
 Start driving the vehicle in the D or
R position according to the
direction of travel (avoid starting in
manual mode).
If you do not follow the above
precautions, the transmission may
overheat. If a message, such as
transmission cooling, is displayed, it
is necessary to temporarily stop the
vehicle to cool the transmission.How to Use the Selector Lever

Operating the AUTO P (Parking Lock)
Function
Meet the following conditions while
the vehicle is stopped.
Switch the vehicle power from ON to
OFF.
Unfasten the driver’s seat belt and
open the driver’s door while the shift
position is in the D/R position.
The AUTO P (parking lock) function
operates and the shift position
automatically changes to P.
NOTE
When the AUTO P (parking lock)
function operates, only the
transmission shift position changes to
the P position automatically. The shift
position indication in the instrument
cluster will differ from the selector
lever position because the selector
lever position does not change. Check
the shift position indication in the
instrument cluster and shift the
selector lever to the P position.
Using Neutral Hold Mode
When in neutral hold mode, a
condition is maintained for about 25
minutes in which the vehicle power is
switched to ACC, the shift position is
in the N position, and the parking
brake is released. Use this mode when
it is necessary to release the parking
brake and change the shift position to
the N position, such as in an automatic
car wash that moves the vehicle by
placing the front and rear tires on one
side of the vehicle on a belt conveyor.
Neutral Hold Mode activation method
1
1. Start the hybrid system.
2. Release the parking brake.
3. Shift the selector lever to the N position.
4. Turn off the AUTOHOLD.
5. Press the electric parking brake (EPB) switch continuously until a
sound is activated.
6. Press the power switch immediately after the sound is activated.
Neutral hold mode operates.
Neutral Hold Mode activation method

1. Start the hybrid system.
2. Release the parking brake.
3. Shift the selector lever to the N position.
4. Turn off the AUTOHOLD.
5. Press the power switch while pressing the electric parking brake
(EPB) switch.
Neutral hold mode operates.
Canceling Neutral Hold Mode
If any of the following operations is
performed, neutral hold mode is
canceled.
Switch the vehicle power ON.Shift the selector lever to the P
position.
NOTE
Neutral hold mode is canceled
automatically after about 25 minutes
have passed since it was operated, and
the vehicle power is switched OFF. At
this time, the AUTO P (parking lock)
function operates and the shift
position changes to the P position.

NOTE
If the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) temperature becomes too high, the mode
will not switch to direct mode. In addition, if the ATF temperature becomes too
high while in direct mode, the mode may be canceled. If the mode is switched to
direct mode again, it is necessary to operate the steering shift switches.
While the vehicle is stopped, direct mode cannot be set even if the DOWN switch
(-) is pulled.
When fully depressing the accelerator pedal even while in direct mode, the
transmission kicks down, bu t it does not kick down while the Traction Control
System (TCS) is turned off. However, if th e vehicle is continuously driven at a high
rpm, the gears may automatically shift up to protect the engine.
When the vehicle is driven at low speed or decelerating quickly during EV driving,
the mode may not be able to be switched to direct mode using the UP switch (+/
OFF) of the steering shift switches.
If NORMAL mode is in use while the motor is running, operating the steering shift
switches will start the engine.
When operating a steering switch while the Mazda intelligent Drive Select
(Mi-Drive) is in EV mode, the engine st arts and the mode switches from EV mode
to NORMAL mode.
Canceling Direct Mode
Direct mode can be canceled by performing the following operations.
The UP switch (+/OFF) is pulled toward you for a certain period of time or longer.The vehicle is driven for a certain period of time or longer (time differs depending
on the driving conditions while operating).
The vehicle is stopped.The vehicle is driven at a low speed.
Using Manual Shift Mode
1. Select manual shift mode (M) from AT shift modes under Settings in Mazda
Connect.
2. Pull the up switch (+/OFF) or the down switch (-) of the steering shift switches toward you when the selector lever is in the D position.

The gear position can be switched manually in manual shift mode.
