Your new diesel engine will feel, drive andfunction somewhat differently than agasoline engine. Therefore it is veryimportant that you read and thoroughlyfamiliarize yourself and others operatingthe vehicle with this guide. There is aspecial procedure for turning off the dieselengine. See Starting a Diesel Engine(page 103). It is important to read andunderstand this material in order tomaintain the best service life for yourengine.
Ford may discontinue models or changespecifications without any notice andwithout incurring obligations.
Note:Either Ford Motor Company or anauthorized Ford dealer may have originallysold this incomplete vehicle to a vehiclemodifier who upfitted it. As a result, someof the options and features on this vehiclemay differ from what we describe in thismanual.
This manual may qualify the location of acomponent as left-hand side or right-handside. The side is determined when facingforward in the seat.

5.Tighten the nut until the spring is fullycaged and brakes released. Do notloosen or remove the release stud andnut unless you completely assembleand securely clamp the brake chamber.
6.After restoring the air pressure,unscrew and remove the release studand install in the carrying pocket. Installthe access plug.
HILL START ASSIST -
VEHICLES WITH: HYDRAULIC
BRAKES
WARNING: The system does notreplace the parking brake. When youleave your vehicle, always apply theparking brake.
WARNING: You must remain inyour vehicle when the system turns on.At all times you are responsible forcontrolling your vehicle, supervising thesystem, and intervening if required.Failure to follow this instruction couldresult in the loss of control of yourvehicle, personal injury or death.
WARNING: The system will turnoff if a malfunction is apparent or if yourev the engine excessively. Failure to takecare may result in the loss of control ofyour vehicle, serious personal injury ordeath.
The system makes it easier to pull awaywhen your vehicle is on a slope withoutneeding to use the parking brake.
When the system is active, your vehicleremains stationary on the slope for two tothree seconds after you release the brakepedal. This allows time to move your footfrom the brake to the accelerator pedal.The brakes release when the engine has
developed sufficient torque to prevent yourvehicle from rolling down the slope. Thisis an advantage when pulling away on aslope, for example from a car park ramp,traffic lights or when reversing uphill intoa parking space.
When the vehicle is on a slope, the systemwill turn on automatically to preventvehicle rollback.
Note:There is no warning light to indicatethe system is either on or off.
Using Hill Start Assist
1.Press the brake pedal to bring yourvehicle to a complete standstill. Keepthe brake pedal pressed and shift intogear when facing uphill or reverse (R)when facing downhill.
2.If the sensors detect that your vehicleis on a slope, the system automaticallyactivates.
3.When you remove your foot from thebrake pedal, your vehicle remains onthe slope without rolling away forabout two to three seconds. This holdtime automatically extends if you arein the process of driving off.
4.Drive off in the normal manner. Thesystem releases the brakesautomatically.
Note:When you remove your foot from thebrake pedal and press the pedal again whenthe system is active, you will experiencesignificantly reduced brake pedal travel. Thisis normal.
Switching the System On and Off
Vehicles with Manual Transmission
You can switch this feature on or off in theinformation display. The systemremembers the last setting when you startyour vehicle.

STEERING
Hydraulic Power Steering
To help prevent damage to the powersteering system:
•Do not hold the steering wheel at itsfurthest turning points for more thanthree to five seconds when the engineis running.
•Avoid continuously steering back andforth with elevated engine RPM as thismay overheat the system. If trying tofree a stuck vehicle, pause betweenattempts to allow the power steeringsystem to cool or seek assistance.Typical steering and driving maneuversallow the system to cool.
•Do not operate the vehicle if the powersteering pump fluid level is below theMIN mark on the reservoir.
•Some noise is normal during operation.If excessive, check for low powersteering pump fluid level beforeseeking service by your dealer.
•Heavy or uneven efforts may be causedby low power steering fluid. Check forlow power steering pump fluid levelbefore seeking service by your dealer.
•Do not fill the power steering pumpreservoir above the MAX mark on thereservoir, as this may result in leaksfrom the reservoir.
If the power steering system breaks downor if you switch the engine off, you cansteer the vehicle manually, but it takesmore effort.
If you have any steering componentsserviced or replaced, install new fasteners.Many fasteners have coatings with threadadhesive, or have prevailing torquefeatures you cannot reuse. Do not reuse abolt or nut. Torque fasteners tospecifications.
Steering Tips
If the steering wanders or pulls, check for:
•An improperly inflated tire.
•Uneven tire wear.
•Loose or worn suspensioncomponents.
•Loose or worn steering components.
•Improper vehicle alignment.
Note:A high crown in the road or highcrosswinds may also make the steeringseem to wander or pull.

•Maintaining proper steering gear andpower steering pump lubricant levels.
•Checking steering column joint boltsand steering linkage, particularly forbody-to-chassis clearance.
Steering Column Joint Bolts
As a good maintenance practice, checksteering column joint bolt tightness every60,000 mi (96,000 km) or annually,whichever occurs first. Do not overtightenthe bolts.
Hydraulic System
Whenever draining and refilling the powersteering's hydraulic system for any reason,bleed air from the system before returningthe vehicle to service. Failure to bleed thehydraulic system properly can result indegradation of power system performance.
Consult an authorized dealer who is awareof the proper procedures for filling andbleeding the system.
SUSPENSION SYSTEM
INSPECTION (IF EQUIPPED)
Note:Do not adjust air suspension heightto any setting other than the specifiedsetting. Altering the height setting changesthe driveline angle and may result inunwarrantable component damage, suchas transmission component damage.
Verify drive axle air suspension height andheight control valve performance at engineoil change intervals.
Periodically check:
•Condition of spring leaves for evidenceof fatigue, bending or breakage.
•Condition of suspension mountingbrackets and bushings.
•Torque rod mounting fasteners fortightness.
•For proper suspension alignment.Maintain proper alignment at all times.
•U-bolts. After the chassis has beenoperating under load for 1,000 mi(1,600 km) or six months (whichevercomes first), the U-bolt nuts must bere-torqued. Re-torque the U-bolt nutsevery 37,000 mi (60,000 km)thereafter. Clean and lubricate theU-bolt and nut threads and seats tomake sure a like new condition whenre-torqueing. See Spring U-BoltCheck (page 261).
FRAME AND TOW HOOK
INSPECTION
Your vehicle's chassis is manufacturedwith frame rails of either HSLA steel orheat-treated steel. Handle each in aspecific manner to make sure maximumservice life. Consult the service manual oran authorized dealer before attemptingframe repair or modification.
It is important, particularly on vehicles thatuse tow hooks frequently, to inspect thefront and rear tow hooks for damage or aloose mounting.
REAR AXLE FLUID CHECK
Your rear axle may have an optionalsynthetic lubricant that allows the use ofextended service intervals. A tag on thefiller plug identifies the use of the syntheticlubricant.
Only use a lubricant that meetsmanufacturer specifications. Use of anon-approved rear axle lubricant maycause internal axle component damage.See Rear Axle Fluid Capacity andSpecification (page 311).
Checking the Fluid Level
1.Park your vehicle on level ground.

2.Set the parking brake and shift intoposition neutral (N) or park (P). Turnthe engine off.
3.Clean any dirt from around the axlefiller plug.
4.Remove the filler plug and inspect thelubricant level. It should be at thebottom of the filler plug opening.
5.Add lubricant, if necessary, through thefiller plug opening.
6.Clean and install the filler plug securely.
Changing the Fluid
Note:Drain the rear axle while the lubricantis warm.
1.Park your vehicle on level ground.
2.Set the parking brake and shift intoposition neutral (N) or park (P). Turnthe engine off.
3.Clean any dirt from around the axlefiller and drain plugs.
4.Remove the filler and drain plugs. Drainthe lubricant into a suitable container.Dispose of all used automotive fluidsin a responsible manner following yourlocal authorized standards.
5.Clean and install the drain plugsecurely.
6.Add lubricant through the filler plugopening.
7.Clean and install the filler plug securely.
SPRING U-BOLT CHECK
Check and tighten the U-bolt nuts afteryour vehicle has been operated under loadfor 1,000 mi (1,600 km) or six months,whichever occurs first.
Check and tighten the U-bolt nuts every37,000 mi (60,000 km).
Check and tighten the U-bolt nuts withyour vehicle at curb height and unloaded.
Inspect the U-bolt threads for rust anddebris. Clean the threads if contaminated.

WARNING: Do not attempt tochange a tire on the side of the vehicleclose to moving traffic. Pull far enoughoff the road to not obstruct the flow oftraffic and avoid the danger of being hitwhen operating the jack or changing thewheel.
Note:Passengers should not remain in thevehicle when the vehicle is being jacked.
Park on a level surface, set the parkingbrake and activate the hazard flashers.
1.Turn the engine off and block the wheelthat is diagonally opposite of the flattire using a wheel chock.
2.Loosen each wheel lug nut ½ turncounterclockwise, but do not removethem until the wheel is raised off theground.
3.Replace the flat tire with the spare tire,making sure the valve stem is facingoutward on all front and inboard rearwheels. If you are replacing theoutboard wheel, the valve stem mustbe facing inward. Reinstall the lug nutsuntil the wheel is snug against the hub.Do not fully tighten the lug nuts untilthe wheel has been lowered.
4.Lower the wheel and fully tighten thelug nuts in the order shown below. SeeTechnical Specifications (page 289).
5.Unblock the wheels.

Wheel Lug Nut Torque Specifications
WARNING: When you install a wheel, always remove any corrosion, dirt or foreignmaterials present on the mounting surfaces of the wheel or the surface of the wheelhub, brake drum or brake disc that contacts the wheel. Make sure to secure any fastenersthat attach the rotor to the hub so they do not interfere with the mounting surfaces ofthe wheel. Installing wheels without correct metal-to-metal contact at the wheelmounting surfaces can cause the wheel nuts to loosen and the wheel to come off whileyour vehicle is in motion, resulting in loss of vehicle control, personal injury or death.

1 Torque specifications are for nut and bolt threads free of dirt and rust. Use only Fordrecommended replacement fasteners.
On vehicles equipped with single rear wheels, retighten the lug nuts to the specified torqueat 100 mi (160 km) after any wheel disturbance (such as tire rotation, changing a flat tire,wheel removal).
On vehicles equipped with dual rear wheels, retighten the lug nuts to the specified torqueat 100 mi (160 km) and again at 500 mi (800 km) of new vehicle operation and afterany wheel disturbance (such as tire rotation, changing a flat tire, wheel removal).
It is important to follow the proper wheel mounting and lug nut torque procedures.
On all two-piece flat wheel nuts,apply one drop of motor oilbetween the flat washer and thenut. Do not apply motor oil to thewheel nut threads or the wheelstud threads.

Tightening Lug Nuts
Tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque1 at 500 mi(800 km) after any wheel disturbance (such as tire rota-tion, changing a flat tire or wheel removal).
Single rear wheels
Tighten the wheel lug nuts to the specified torque1 at100 mi (160 km), and again at 500 mi (800 km) of newvehicle operation and after any wheel disturbance (suchas tire rotation, changing a flat tire or wheel removal).
Dual rear wheels
