Instrument panel when the paddles are activated forshifting.
Change
To shift one gear:
–Pull one of the paddles toward the steeringwheel and then release.
As long as the engine speed (rpm) is within thepermissible range for the selected gear, a gearshift will take place each time a paddle is pulled.After each gear shift, a number indicating thecurrent gear will be displayed in the instrumentpanel.
Turning off Start/Stop
Manual deactivation in gear D and B
–Deactivate the paddles by pulling the rightpaddle (+) toward the steering wheel andholding it until the number of the currentgear is no longer displayed in the instrumentpanel.
>The transmission will revert to gear D or Bdepending on which gear was selectedbefore the paddles were activated.
Automatic deactivation
In gear position D, the steering wheel paddlesare deactivated after a short period of time if theyare not used. The number of the current gear willno longer be displayed in the instrument panel.
In gear position B, the paddles will not activateautomatically.

Shiftlock
The automatic transmission's shiftlock functionhelps prevent inadvertently moving the gearselector between different positions.
Automatic shiftlock
The automatic shiftlock has a separate safetysystem.
From Park - P
To move to another gear from P (Park), the brakepedal must be depressed and the ignition inmode II.
From Neutral - N
If the gear selector is in N and the vehicle hasbeen stationary for at least 3 seconds (with orwithout the engine running), the gear selector willbe locked in that position.
To move the gear selector from N to anothergear, the brake pedal must be depressed and theignition in mode II.
Messages in the instrument panel
If the gear selector is locked in position, a mes-sage will appear in the instrument panel, e.g.Gear lever Press brake pedal to activategear lever.
There is no mechanical shiftlock function.

Hybrid
This is the default mode in which the electricmotor and combustion engine work together.
The vehicle starts in Hybrid mode. The controlsystem uses both the electric motor and the gas-oline engine - separately or in tandem - and cal-culates optimal utilization with regard to perform-ance, fuel consumption and comfort. Drivingcapacity on the electric motor alone is deter-mined by factors such as the hybrid battery'scharge level, the need for heat or cooling in thepassenger compartment, etc.
If there is sufficient charge in the battery, it ispossible to drive solely on electric power. Whenthe accelerator pedal is pressed, only the electricmotor will be activated until the battery reaches acertain charge level. Above this level, the currentin the battery cannot supply the power requestedby the accelerator pedal and the combustionengine will start.
When the hybrid battery's charge level is low, thecombustion engine will start more frequently tosave the remaining current in the battery. Chargethe hybrid battery from a 120-240 volt outletusing a charging cable, or activate Charge inFunction view to reset the option of only usingthe electric motor.
This drive mode is designed for low energy con-sumption with an optimized mix between theelectric motor and gasoline engine, without com-promising on climate comfort or driving experi-
ence. When faster acceleration is requested bythe driver, the electric driveline will be utilized tohelp provide maximum additional power.
The vehicle also monitors the driving conditionsand automatically engages all-wheel drive if nec-essary. All-wheel drive and extra electric powerare always available regardless of the battery'scharging status.
Information in the instrument panel
When driving in Hybrid mode, a hybrid gauge willbe displayed in the instrument panel. The gaugewill indicate the amount of electrical currentrequired when the driver depresses the accelera-tor pedal. The marker between the lightning andthe drop shows how much current is available.
The instrument panel gauge when both the electricmotor and the combustion engine are being used.
The instrument panel also shows howmuch current is being restored to thebattery (regenerated) during light brak-ing.
Pure
Uses the electric motor only, with the lowestpossible energy consumption and carbondioxide emissions.
This drive mode maximizes the use of the hybridbattery. Certain climate system functions arereduced to provide the longest distance usingonly electricity.
Pure mode is available when the hybrid battery issufficiently charged. Even in Pure mode, thecombustion engine will start if the charge level inthe battery gets too low. The combustion enginewill also start
if the vehicle's speed goes above 125 km/h(78 mph)
if the driver requests more power than theelectric motor can provide
if factors such as cold weather affect thesystem or components.

Individual
Customizes drive mode to personal preferen-ces.
Select one of the drive modes as a basis andadjust the settings to achieve your preferred driv-ing characteristics. These settings will be storedin your driver profile.
Individual drive mode is only available if it hasbeen activated in the center display.

Using the electric or combustion
engine
An advanced control system determines the dis-tance that the vehicle can be driven on the com-bustion engine, electric motor, or both at thesame time.
Its primary function is to use the motor/engineand the current available in the hybrid battery asefficiently as possible based on the characteris-tics of the various drive modes and the poweroutput requested by the driver by pressing theaccelerator pedal.
In certain cases, temporary limitations in the sys-tem or mandatory functions to help maintain alow overall emissions level may result in greateruse of the combustion engine.

Changing drive mode
Select the drive mode that is best suited to thecurrent driving conditions.
The drive mode is changed using the control inthe tunnel console.
Keep in mind that not all drive modes are availa-ble in all situations.
To change drive mode:
1.Press the DRIVE MODE control.
>A pop-up menu will appear in the centerdisplay.
2. Roll the wheel upward or downward to thedesired drive mode.
3. Press the drive mode control or tap its buttonin the center display to confirm the selection.

Leveling control* and suspension
Self-leveling and suspension functions are con-trolled automatically.
Shock absorbers (Four-C)
On vehicles equipped with Four-C, the shockabsorbers are adapted to the selected drivemode and the current vehicle speed. The shockabsorbers are normally set to provide the bestpossible comfort and are adjusted continuouslyaccording to the road surface and the vehicle'sacceleration, braking and cornering.
Manually adjustable shock absorbers
On vehicles equipped with adjustable shockabsorbers, these are preset to provide the bestpossible performance during active driving onregular roads. The shock absorber settings canbe adjusted for driving in other conditions or onparticular road surfaces.
The settings can be adjusted for driving on
dry roads
wet roads
snow9
ice9
poor roads.
There is also a comfort mode.
Volvo recommends that shock absorber adjust-ments are performed by an authorized Volvoworkshop.

In certain situations, this function must be turnedoff, e.g. before the vehicle is raised using a jack*.The level difference caused by raising the vehiclewith a jack could cause problems with the pneu-matic suspension.
Turning off the function in the center display:

Economical driving
Drive economically and more environmentallyconscious by thinking ahead and avoiding rapidstarts and stops.
Adapt your driving style and speed to the currenttraffic conditions.
To help achieve the greatest distance with thelowest fuel consumption with Twin Engine,observe the following:
Charge
Charge the vehicle regularly by plugging itinto an electrical outlet. Make it a habit toalways begin trips with the hybrid battery fullycharged.
Locate charging stations along your route.
If possible, choose parking spots with charg-ing stations.
NOTE
Charge the vehicle from the electricity grid asoften as possible!
Preconditioning
Whenever possible, precondition the vehiclebefore driving by connecting the chargingcable to an electrical outlet.
Avoid parking the vehicle somewhere wherethe interior will become too hot or too cold
while the vehicle is parked. If possible, parkthe vehicle in a climate-controlled garage.
During a short drive after passenger com-partment preconditioning, turn off the pas-senger compartment fan or the air condition-ing in a hot climate.
If preconditioning is not possible when it iscold outside, use seat and steering wheelheating first. Avoid heating the entire pas-senger compartment to reduce the amountof current being taken from the hybrid bat-tery.

Hold and Charge functions
In certain situations, it can be useful to controlthe hybrid battery's charge level while driving.This is possible with the Hold and Charge func-tions.
Hold and Charge are available in all drivemodes. The functions will switch off if Pure drivemode is activated.
Function buttons for Hold and Charge
The functions can be activated in the center dis-play's Function view.
Hold
Battery level sustained forlater use.
This function retains the chargein the hybrid battery for theelectric motor and saves availa-ble electrical current for use ata later time, such as when driving in an urbanarea or residential neighborhood.
The vehicle will function as in normal hybrid driv-ing with a discharged battery - in addition toreusing energy from e.g. regenerative braking, thecombustion engine will be used more frequentlyto maintain the charge in the battery.
Charge
Engine charges hybridbattery.
This function charges thehybrid battery with the help ofthe combustion engine forincreased use of the electricmotor at a later time.

1. Press the button on the dashboard.
>Pressure equalization in the fuel tank cau-ses a slight delay before the fuel fillerdoor opens. Fuel tank Fuel lid isopening will be displayed in the instru-ment panel, followed by Fuel tank Readyfor refueling.
NOTE
Refueling must be done within approximately15 minutes of opening the fuel filler door.After this time, the valve opened by pushingthe button for opening the fuel filler door willclose and it will no longer be possible torefuel without the pump's nozzle switching off.
If the valve is closed before refueling is com-plete - press the button again and wait untilthe driver display shows the message Fueltank Ready for refueling.
2. After refueling, press the fuel filler doorlightly to close it.
