XTurn the mechanical key counter-clockwiseas far as it will go to positionG.The door is unlocked.
XTurn the mechanical key back and removeit.
XInsert mechanical key into the SmartKey(Ypage 72).
Locking the vehicle (mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be locked with theSmartKey or KEYLESS-GO, use the mechanicalkey.
XOpen the driver's door.
XClose the front-passenger door, the reardoors and the tailgate.
XPress the locking button on the driver’s door(Ypage 75).
XCheck whether the locking knobs on thefront-passenger door and the rear doors arestill visible. Press down the locking knobs byhand, if necessary.
XClose the driver's door.
XTake the mechanical key out of the Smart-Key (Ypage 71).
XInsert the mechanical key into the lock ofthe driver's door as far as it will go.
XTurn the mechanical key clockwise as far asit will go to positionG.
XTurn the mechanical key back and removeit.
XMake sure that the doors and the tailgateare locked.
XInsert mechanical key into the SmartKey(Ypage 72).
iIf you lock the vehicle as described above,the fuel filler flap is not locked. The anti-theft alarm system is not armed.

Moreover, people, e.g. children, may be
standing in the closing area or may enter the
closing area during the closing process.
There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of

If objects, luggage or loads are not secured
or not secured sufficiently, they could slip,
tip over or be flung around and thereby hit
vehicle occupants. There is a risk of injury,
particularly in the event of sudden braking
or a sudden change in direction.
Always store objects so that they cannot be
flung around. Secure objects, luggage or
loads against slipping or tipping before the
journey.
!The tailgate swings upwards and to therear when opened. Therefore, make surethat there is sufficient clearance above andbehind the tailgate.
The opening dimensions of the tailgate can befound in the "Vehicle data" section(Ypage 339).
You should preferably place luggage or loadsin the cargo compartment. Observe the load-ing guidelines (Ypage 250).
Do not leave the SmartKey in the cargo com-partment. You could otherwise lock yourselfout.
The tailgate can be:
Ropened and closed manually from outside
Rvehicles with EASY-PACK tailgate:opened/closed automatically from the out-side
Rvehicles with EASY-PACK tailgate:opened/closed automatically from theinside
Rvehicles with EASY-PACK tailgate andwith KEYLESS-GO or KEYLESS-GO startfunction:closed with the remote operatingswitch on the SmartKey
Rreleased with the emergency release fromthe inside
Tailgate obstruction detection with
reversing feature
On vehicles with an EASY-PACK tailgate, thetailgate is equipped with automatic obstaclerecognition with a reversing feature. If a solidobject blocks or restricts the tailgate whenautomatically opening or closing, this proce-dure is stopped. If the tailgate is stopped dur-
ing the closing process, the tailgate automati-cally opens again slightly. The automaticobstruction detection with reversing feature isonly an aid. It is not a substitute for your atten-tiveness when opening and closing the tail-gate.
GWARNING
The reversing feature does not respond:
Rto soft, light and thin objects, e.g. fingers
Rover the last 1/3 in (8 mm) of the closing
movement
The reversing feature cannot prevent some-
one from becoming trapped in these situa-
tions in particular. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that no body parts are in close
proximity during the closing procedure.
If somebody becomes trapped:
Rpress theTbutton on the SmartKey,
or
Rpull or press the remote operating switch
on the driver's door or
Rpress the closing button/STOP button in
the tailgate or
Rpull the handle on the tailgate
Vehicles with HANDS-FREE ACCESS:it isalso possible to stop the closing process byperforming a kicking movement under the rearbumper.

-set something down or lift something upbehind the vehicle.
-polish the rear of the vehicle.
Do not carry the KEYLESS-GO key aboutyour person in these situations or in situa-tions similar to these. This will prevent theunintentional opening/closing of the tail-gate.
Operation
XTo open/close:kick your foot into sensordetection zoneCbelow the bumper.Two warning tones sound while the tailgateis opening or closing.
XIf the tailgate does not open/close afterseveral attempts:wait at least ten sec-onds, using your foot kick under the bumperagain.
If you hold your foot under the bumper for toolong, the tailgate does not open or close.Repeat the leg movement more quickly if thisoccurs.
To stop the opening or closing procedure:
Rkick with your foot into sensor detectionrangeCunder the bumper, or
Rpull the handle on the outside of the tail-gate, or
Rpress the closing button on the tailgate, or
Rpress theTbutton on the SmartKey
If the tailgate closing procedure has beenstopped:
Rkick your foot under the bumper again andthe tailgate will open.
If the tailgate opening procedure has beenstopped:
Rkick your foot under the bumper again andthe tailgate will close.

Theautomatic reversing feature is only an aid anddoes not relieve you of the responsibility topay attention when closing a side window.

Opening and closing the side win-
dows
The switches for all side windows are locatedon the driver's door. There is also a switch oneach door for the corresponding side window.
The switches on the driver's door take prece-dence.

XMake sure that all the side windows and thepanorama roof with power tilt/sliding panelare closed.
On vehicles with a panorama roof with powertilt/sliding panel:
XTouch recessed sensor surfaceCon thedoor handle again until the roller sunblind ofthe panorama roof with power tilt/slidingpanel closes.
XTo interrupt convenience closing:releaserecessed sensor surfaceCon the doorhandle.
Resetting the side windows
If a side window can no longer be closed fully,you must reset it.
XClose all the doors.
XTurn the SmartKey to positionGorHinthe ignition lock (Ypage 125).
XPull the corresponding switch on the doorcontrol panel until the side window is com-pletely closed (Ypage 84).
XHold the switch for an additional second.
If the side window opens again slightly:
XImmediately pull the corresponding switchon the door control panel until the side win-dow is completely closed (Ypage 84).
XHold the switch for an additional second.
XIf the respective side window remainsclosed after the button is released, then ithas been set correctly. If this is not thecase, repeat the steps above.
Problems with the side windows
GWARNING
If you close a side window again immediately after it has been blocked or reset, the side win-
dow closes with increased or maximum force. The reversing feature is then not active. Parts of
the body could be trapped in the closing area in the process. This poses an increased risk of
injury or even fatal injury.
Make sure that no parts of the body are in the closing area. To stop the closing process,
release the switch or push the switch again to reopen the side window.

In the following section, the term "sliding sun-roof" refers to the panorama roof with powertilt/sliding panel.
GWARNING
While opening and closing the sliding sun-
roof, body parts in close proximity could
become trapped. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that no body parts are in close
proximity during the opening and closing
procedures.
If somebody becomes trapped:
Rrelease the switch immediately, or
Rduring automatic operation, push the
switch briefly in any direction
The opening or closing procedure will be
stopped.
GWARNING
If children operate the sliding sunroof they
could become trapped, particularly if they
are left unsupervised. There is a risk of
injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle.
Never leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle.
GWARNING
At high speeds the raised sliding sunroof
automatically lowers slightly at the rear. This
could trap you or other persons. There is a
risk of injury. Make sure that nobody rea-
ches into the sweep of the sliding sunroof
whilst the vehicle is in motion.
If somebody becomes trapped, immediately
pull back the sliding sunroof switch. The
sliding sunroof lifts during opening.

!Only open the sliding sunroof if it is free ofsnow and ice. Otherwise, malfunctions mayoccur.
Do not allow anything to protrude from thesliding sunroof. Otherwise, the seals couldbe damaged.
!The weather can change abruptly. It couldstart to rain or snow. Make sure that thesliding sunroof is closed when you leave thevehicle. The vehicle electronics can be dam-aged if water enters the vehicle interior.
iResonance noises can occur in addition tothe usual airflow noises when the slidingsunroof is open. They are caused by minorpressure fluctuations in the vehicle interior.Change the position of the sliding sunroof oropen a side window slightly to reduce oreliminate these noises.
Sliding sunroof reversing feature
In the following section, the term "sliding sun-roof" refers to the panorama roof with powertilt/sliding panel.
The sliding sunroof is equipped with an auto-matic reversing feature. If a solid object blocksor restricts the sliding sunroof during the clos-ing process, the sliding sunroof opens againautomatically. However, the automatic revers-ing feature is only an aid and does not relieveyou of the responsibility of paying attentionwhen closing the sliding sunroof.
