Opening/closing automatically from
the outside
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Parts of the body could become trapped
during automatic closing of the tailgate.
Moreover, people, e.g. children, may be
standing in the closing area or may enter the
closing area during the closing process.
There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of
the closing area during the closing process.
Use one of the following options to stop the
closing process:
Rpress theTbutton on the SmartKey.
Rpull or press the remote operating switch
on the driver's door.
Rpress the close button or STOP button on
the tailgate.
Rpull the handle on the tailgate.
GDANGER
Combustion engines emit poisonous
exhaust gases such as carbon monoxide.
Exhaust gases can enter the vehicle interior
if the tailgate is open while the engine is
running, especially if the vehicle is in
motion. There is a risk of poisoning.
Always switch off the engine before opening
the tailgate. Never drive with the tailgate
open.
!The tailgate swings upwards and to therear when opened. Therefore, make surethat there is sufficient clearance above andbehind the tailgate.
Two warning tones sound while the tailgate isopening or closing.
The opening dimensions of the tailgate can befound in the "Vehicle data" section(Ypage 339).
Opening automatically
You can open the tailgate automatically withthe SmartKey or the handle in the tailgate.
XPress and hold theTbutton on theSmartKey until the tailgate opens.
or
XIf the tailgate is unlocked, pull the handleand let it go again immediately.
Closing automatically
Vehicles with EASY-PACK tailgate:you canalso close the tailgate automatically from out-side.

HANDS-FREE ACCESS
Important safety notes
GWARNING
The vehicle exhaust system can become
very hot. If you use HANDS-FREE ACCESS,
you could burn yourself by touching the
exhaust system. There is a risk of injury.
Always ensure that you make the kicking
movement only within the detection range of
the sensors.
!If the SmartKey is within the rear detectionrange of KEYLESS-GO, the following situa-tions, for example, could lead to the unin-tentional opening of the tailgate:
Rwhen using an automatic car wash
Rwhen using a power washer
Make sure that the SmartKey is at least10 ft (3m) away fromthe vehicle.
iYou can also deactivate KEYLESS-GO. Fur-ther information on deactivating and activat-ing KEYLESS-GO (Ypage 70).
General notes
With KEYLESS-GO and HANDS-FREE ACCESS,you can open or close the tailgate or stop theprocedure without using your hands. This isuseful if you have your hands full. To do this,make a kicking movement under the bumperwith your foot.
Observe the following points:
RCarry your KEYLESS-GO key about your per-son. The SmartKey must be at the rear ofthe vehicle in the detection range of KEY-LESS-GO.
RWhen making the kicking movement, makesure that you are standing firmly on theground and that there is sufficient clearanceto the rear of the vehicle. You could other-wise lose your balance, for example on ice.
RAlways ensure that you only make the kick-ing movement within the detection range ofsensorsC.
RStand at least 12 in (30 cm) away from therear area while doing so.
RDo not come into contact with the bumperwhile making the kicking movement. Other-wise, the sensors may not function cor-rectly.
RHANDS-FREE ACCESS does not functionduring engine start.
RDirt caused by road salt or snow aroundsensorsCmay restrict functionality.
Using the HANDS-FREE ACCESS with aprosthetic leg may restrict functionality.
RIf a KEYLESS-GO key is at the rear of thevehicle in the detection range of KEYLESS-GO, HANDS-FREE ACCESS could be trig-

gered. The tailgate could thus be opened orclosed unintentionally, for example, if you:
-set something down or lift something upbehind the vehicle.
-polish the rear of the vehicle.
Do not carry the KEYLESS-GO key aboutyour person in these situations or in situa-tions similar to these. This will prevent theunintentional opening/closing of the tail-gate.
Operation
XTo open/close:kick your foot into sensordetection zoneCbelow the bumper.Two warning tones sound while the tailgateis opening or closing.
XIf the tailgate does not open/close afterseveral attempts:wait at least ten sec-onds, using your foot kick under the bumperagain.
If you hold your foot under the bumper for toolong, the tailgate does not open or close.Repeat the leg movement more quickly if thisoccurs.
To stop the opening or closing procedure:
Rkick with your foot into sensor detectionrangeCunder the bumper, or
Rpull the handle on the outside of the tail-gate, or
Rpress the closing button on the tailgate, or
Rpress theTbutton on the SmartKey
If the tailgate closing procedure has beenstopped:
Rkick your foot under the bumper again andthe tailgate will open.
If the tailgate opening procedure has beenstopped:
Rkick your foot under the bumper again andthe tailgate will close.

inside

Opening and closing automatically
You can open the tailgate from the driver'sseat when the vehicle is stationary andunlocked.
It is only possible to close the tailgate from thedriver's seat on vehicles with the EASY-PACKtailgate.
XTo open:pull remote operating switch forthe tailgateCuntil the tailgate opens.
XTo close:turn the SmartKey to positionGorHin the ignition lock (Ypage 125).
XPress and hold the remote operating switchfor tailgateCuntil the tailgate is com-pletely closed.
Limiting the opening angle of the
tailgate
General notes
!Make sure there is sufficient clearance toopen the tailgate fully when setting theopening angle. The tailgate could otherwisebe damaged. Ideally, set the opening angleoutside.
You can limit the opening angle of the tailgate.This could be useful, for example, if there isinsufficient space above the tailgate. It is pos-sible to limit the tailgate in the top half of itsopening range.
To open the tailgate fully, pull the handle onthe outside of the tailgate again after it hasstopped automatically. This does not deletethe stored position.
Activating
XTo open the tailgate:pull the handle on thetailgate.
XTo stop the opening procedure at thedesired position:
Rpress the closing button in the tailgate, or
Rpull the handle on the outside of the tail-gate again, or
Rpress the tailgate button on the SmartKey
XTo store the position:press and hold theclosing button on the tailgate until you heara short tone.The opening angle limiter is activated. Thetailgate will now stop in the stored positionwhen opening.
Deactivating
XPress and hold the closing button on thetailgate until two short tones sound.
Tailgate emergency release
General notes
!The tailgate swings upwards and to therear when opened. Therefore, make surethat there is sufficient clearance above andbehind the tailgate.
The opening dimensions of the tailgate can befound in the "Vehicle data" section(Ypage 339).
If the tailgate can no longer be unlocked:
Rusing the SmartKey, or
Rusing the remote operating switch on thedoor control panel
Use the emergency release inside the tailgate.
You can reach the emergency release via thecargo compartment.

Opening
XFold the rear seat backrest forwards(Ypage 254).
XTake the mechanical key out of the Smart-Key (Ypage 71).
XInsert mechanical keyDinto openingCinthe trim and push it in.
XOpen the tailgate.
XInsert the mechanical key into the SmartKey(Ypage 72).
Emergency release button
You can open the trunk lid from inside thevehicle with the emergency release button.
XPress emergency release buttonCbriefly.The trunk lid unlocks and opens.
The trunk lid can be unlocked and opened withthe trunk lid emergency release when the vehi-cle is stationary or while driving.
The trunk lid emergency release does not openthe trunk lid if the battery is disconnected ordischarged.
Trunk lid emergency release light:
REmergency release buttonCflashes for30 minutes after the trunk lid is opened.
REmergency release buttonCflashes for60 minutes after the trunk lid is closed.
Side windows
Important safety notes
GWARNING
While opening the side windows, body parts
could become trapped between the side
window and the door frame as the side win-
dow moves. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody touches the side
window during the opening procedure. If
somebody becomes trapped, release the
switch or pull the switch to close the side
window again.
GWARNING
While closing the side windows, body parts
in the closing area could become trapped.
There is a risk of injury.
When closing make sure that no parts of the
body are in the closing area. If somebody
becomes trapped, release the switch or
press the switch to open the side window
again.
GWARNING
If children operate the side windows they
could become trapped, particularly if they
are left unsupervised. There is a risk of
injury.
Activate the override feature for the rear
side windows. When leaving the vehicle,
always take the SmartKey with you and lock
the vehicle. Never leave children unsuper-
vised in the vehicle.
Side window reversing feature
The side windows are equipped with an auto-matic reversing feature. If a solid object blocks

or restricts a side window from travelingupwards during the automatic closing process,the side window opens again automatically.During the manual closing process, the sidewindow only opens again automatically afterthe corresponding switch is released. Theautomatic reversing feature is only an aid anddoes not relieve you of the responsibility topay attention when closing a side window.
GWARNING
The reversing feature does not react:
Rto soft, light and thin objects, e.g. fingers
Rwhile adjusting
This means that the reversing feature can-
not prevent someone being trapped in these
situations. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that no body parts are in close
proximity during the closing procedure. If
someone becomes trapped, press theb
button to open the side window again.
Opening and closing the side win-
dows
The switches for all side windows are locatedon the driver's door. There is also a switch oneach door for the corresponding side window.
The switches on the driver's door take prece-dence.

XPress and hold the6button until theside windows and the panorama sunroof arein the desired position.If the roller sunblind of the panorama roofwith power tilt/sliding panel is closed, theroller sunblind is opened first.
XPress and hold the6button once moreuntil the panorama roof with power tilt/slid-ing panel reaches the desired position.
XTo interrupt convenience opening:release the6button.
Convenience closing feature
Important safety notes
GWARNING
When the convenience closing feature is
operating, parts of the body could become
trapped in the closing area of the side win-
dow and the sliding sunroof. There is a risk
of injury.
Observe the complete closing procedure
when the convenience closing feature is
operating. Make sure that no body parts are
in close proximity during the closing proce-
dure.
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO or KEYLESS-GOstart function:you can do the following at thesame time:
Rlock the vehicle
Rclose the side windows
Rclose the panorama roof with power tilt/sliding panel
On vehicles with a panorama roof with powertilt/sliding panel, you can then close the rollersunblind.

Using the SmartKey
XVehicles with KEYLESS-GO or KEYLESS-GO start function:for the following opera-tions, point the tip of the SmartKey at thehandle on the driver's door. The SmartKeymust be close to the driver's door handle.
iVehicles with KEYLESS-GO or KEYLESS-GO start function:the SmartKey must bein close proximity to the vehicle.
XPress and hold the7button until theside windows and the panorama sliding sun-roof are fully closed.
XMake sure that all the side windows and thepanorama roof with power tilt/sliding panelare closed.
On vehicles with a panorama roof with powertilt/sliding panel:
XPress and hold the7button again untilthe roller sunblind of the panorama slidingsunroof closes.
XTo interrupt convenience closing:releasethe7button.
Using KEYLESS-GO
The driver's door and the door at which thehandle is used, must both be closed. TheSmartKey must be outside the vehicle. Thegap between the SmartKey and the corre-sponding door handle should not be greaterthan 3 ft (1 m).
XTouch recessed sensor surfaceCon thedoor handle until the side windows and thepanorama roof with power tilt/sliding panelare fully closed.
iMake sure you only touch recessed sensorsurfaceC.

Resetting the side windows
If a side window can no longer be closed fully,you must reset it.
XClose all the doors.
XTurn the SmartKey to positionGorHinthe ignition lock (Ypage 125).
XPull the corresponding switch on the doorcontrol panel until the side window is com-pletely closed (Ypage 84).
XHold the switch for an additional second.
If the side window opens again slightly:
XImmediately pull the corresponding switchon the door control panel until the side win-dow is completely closed (Ypage 84).
XHold the switch for an additional second.
XIf the respective side window remainsclosed after the button is released, then ithas been set correctly. If this is not thecase, repeat the steps above.
Problems with the side windows
GWARNING
If you close a side window again immediately after it has been blocked or reset, the side win-
dow closes with increased or maximum force. The reversing feature is then not active. Parts of
the body could be trapped in the closing area in the process. This poses an increased risk of
injury or even fatal injury.
Make sure that no parts of the body are in the closing area. To stop the closing process,
release the switch or push the switch again to reopen the side window.
