2017 FORD F250 SUPER DUTY maintenance schedule

BREAKING-IN
You need to break in new tires forapproximately 300 mi (480 km). Duringthis time, your vehicle may exhibit someunusual driving characteristics.
Avoid driving too fast during the first1,000 mi (1,600 km). Vary your speedfrequently and change up through thegears early. Do not labor the engine.
Drive your new vehicle at least 1,000 mi(1,600 km) before towing a trailer. Makesure you use the specified engine oil. SeeCapacities and Specifications (page422).
Do not add friction modifier compoundsor special break-in oils during the first fewthousand miles (kilometers) of operation.These additives may prevent piston ringseating.
ECONOMICAL DRIVING
Your fuel economy is affected by severalthings, such as how you drive, theconditions you drive under, and how youmaintain your vehicle.
You may improve your fuel economy bykeeping these things in mind:
•Accelerate and slow down in a smooth,moderate fashion.
•Drive at steady speeds withoutstopping.
•Anticipate stops; slowing down mayeliminate the need to stop.
•Combine errands and minimizestop-and-go driving.
•Close the windows for high-speeddriving.
•Drive at reasonable speeds (travelingat 55 mph [88 km/h] uses 15% lessfuel than traveling at 65 mph [105km/h]).
•Keep the tires properly inflated and useonly the recommended size.
•Use the recommended engine oil.
•Perform all regularly scheduledmaintenance.
Avoid these actions; they reduce your fueleconomy:
•Sudden accelerations or hardaccelerations.
•Revving the engine before turning it off.
•Idle for periods longer than one minute.
•Warm up your vehicle on coldmornings.
•Use the air conditioner or frontdefroster.
•Use the speed control in hilly terrain.
•Rest your foot on the brake pedal whiledriving.
•Drive a heavily loaded vehicle or tow atrailer.
•Carry unnecessary weight(approximately 1 mpg [0.4 km/L] islost for every 400 lb [180 kilogram] ofweight carried).
•Driving with the wheels out ofalignment.
Conditions
•Heavily loading a vehicle or towing atrailer may reduce fuel economy at anyspeed.
•Adding certain accessories to yourvehicle (for example bug deflectors,rollbars, light bars, running boards, skiracks or luggage racks) may reducefuel economy.
•To maximize the fuel economy, drivewith the tonneau cover installed (ifequipped).
•Using fuel blended with alcohol maylower fuel economy.

Driving Hints

•Front wheel toe may requirere-adjustment to prevent prematureuneven tire wear. Specifications are inthe Ford Workshop Manual.
•Headlight aim may requirere-adjustment.
•The tire air pressures recommendedfor general driving are on the vehicle’sSafety Certification Label. Themaximum cold inflation pressure forthe tire and associated load rating ison the tire sidewall. Tire air pressuremay require re-adjustment within thesepressure limits to accommodate theadditional weight of the snowplowinstallation.
•Federal and some local regulationsrequire additional exterior lamps forsnowplow-equipped vehicles. Consultyour authorized dealer for additionalinformation.
Operating the Vehicle with theSnowplow Attached
Note:Do not use your vehicle for snowremoval until you have driven at least500 mi (800 km).
Ford recommends vehicle speed does notexceed 45 mph (72 km/h) whensnowplowing.
The attached snowplow blade restrictsairflow to the radiator, and may cause theengine to run at a higher temperature:Attention to engine temperature isespecially important when outsidetemperatures are above freezing. Anglethe blade to maximize airflow to theradiator and monitor engine temperatureto determine whether a left or right angleprovides the best performance.

Snowplowing with your AirbagEquipped Vehicle
WARNINGS
Do not attempt to service, repair, ormodify the airbag supplementalrestraint system (SRS) or its fuses.Contact an authorized dealer.
Additional equipment for examplesnowplow equipment may affect theperformance of the airbag sensorsincreasing the risk of injury. Please refer tothe Body Builders Layout Book forinstructions about the appropriateinstallation of additional equipment.
All occupants of the vehicle,including the driver, should alwaysproperly wear their seatbelt, evenwhen provided with an airbagsupplemental restraint system (SRS).
Your vehicle is equipped with a driver andpassenger airbag supplemental restraintsystem. The supplemental restraint systemwill activate in certain frontal and offsetfrontal collisions when the vehicle sustainssufficient frontal deceleration.
Careless or high speed driving whileplowing snow that results in sufficientvehicle decelerations can deploy theairbags. Such driving also increases the riskof accidents.
Never remove or defeat the trippingmechanisms designed into the snowremoval equipment by its manufacturer.Doing so may cause damage to the vehicleand the snow removal equipment as wellas possible airbag deployment.
Engine temperature while plowing
When driving with a plow, your engine mayrun at a higher temperature than normalbecause the attached snowplow blade willrestrict airflow to the radiator.

Maintenance

If your vehicle is equipped with a dieselengine, an Intelligent Oil Life Monitor™calculates the proper oil change serviceinterval. When the information displayindicates: OIL CHANGE REQUIRED, changethe engine oil and oil filter. SeeInformation Displays (page 111).
The engine oil filter protects your engineby filtering harmful, abrasive or sludgeparticles and particles significantly smallerthan most available will-fit filters. SeeMotorcraft Parts (page 419).
1. Unscrew the oil filter and oil pan drainplug and wait for the oil to drain.
2. Replace the filter.
3. Reinstall the oil pan drain plug.
4. Refill the engine with new oil. SeeCapacities and Specifications (page427).
5. For diesel engines, you need to resetthe Intelligent Oil Life Monitor™. SeeInformation Displays (page 111).
Engine lubrication for severeservice operation
The following conditions define severeoperation for which engine operation withSAE 5W-40 API CJ-4 is recommended. Oiland oil filter change intervals will bedetermined by the Intelligent Oil LifeMonitor™ as noted previously.
•Frequent or extended idling (over 10minutes per hour of normal driving).
•Low-speed operation/stationary use.
•If vehicle is operated in sustainedambient temperatures below -9°F(-23°C) or above 100°F (38°C).
•Frequent low-speed operation,consistent heavy traffic less than25 mph (40 km/h).
•Operating in severe dust conditions.
•Operating the vehicle off road.
•Towing a trailer over 1,000 mi(1,600 km).
•Sustained, high-speed driving at GrossVehicle Weight Rating (maximumloaded weight for vehicle operation).
•Use of fuels with sulfur content otherthan ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD).
•Use of high-sulfur diesel fuel.
CHANGING THE COALESCER
FILTER ELEMENT
WARNING
Do not dispose of engine oil or oilfilters in the household refuse or thepublic sewage system. Use anauthorized waste disposal facility.
Do not clean or recondition the filterelement.
We recommend that you demand the useof genuine Ford and Motorcraft® partswhenever your vehicle requires scheduledmaintenance or repair. Use the correctspecification filter element. SeeMotorcraft Parts (page 418).
Note:Operating your vehicle without a filterelement or with an unapproved filterelement may result in damage to the turbocharger or exchanger and could lead toengine damage that may not be covered bythe vehicle Warranty.

WARNINGS
Do not add engine coolant when theengine is hot. Steam and scaldingliquids released from a hot coolingsystem can burn you badly. Also, spillingcoolant on hot engine parts can burn you.
Do not put engine coolant in thewindshield washer fluid container. Ifsprayed on the windshield, enginecoolant could make it difficult to seethrough the windshield.
To reduce the risk of personal injury,make sure the engine is cool beforeunscrewing the coolant pressurerelief cap. The cooling system is underpressure. Steam and hot liquid can comeout forcefully when you loosen the capslightly.
WARNINGS
Do not add coolant further than theMAX mark.
When the engine is cold, check theconcentration and level of the coolant atthe intervals listed in the scheduledmaintenance information. See ScheduledMaintenance (page 573).

Werecommend, Robinair® Coolant andBattery Refractometer 75240 (Rotundatool part number: ROB75240). We do notrecommend the use of hydrometers orcoolant test strips for measuring coolantconcentration.
Note:Automotive fluids are notinterchangeable. Do not use coolant orwindshield washer fluid outside of itsspecified function and vehicle location.

ENGINE COOLANT CHECK -
6.7L DIESEL
WARNINGS
Do not remove the coolant reservoircap when the cooling system is hot.Wait 10 minutes for the coolingsystem to cool down. Cover the coolantreservoir cap with a thick cloth to preventthe possibility of scalding and slowlyremove the cap. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in personal injury.
Do not put coolant in the windshieldwasher fluid reservoir. If sprayed onthe windshield, coolant could makeit difficult to see through the windshield.

It is very important to use predilutedcoolant approved to the correctspecification in order to avoid plugging thesmall passageways in the engine coolingsystem. Mixing of engine coolants or usingan incorrect coolant may harm the engineor cooling system components and maynot be covered by the vehicle Warranty.
Note:Coolants marketed for all makes andmodels may not be approved to Fordspecifications and may cause damage tothe cooling system. Resulting componentdamage may not be covered by the vehicleWarranty.
If the coolant level is at or below theminimum mark, add prediluted coolantimmediately.

If you drive in extremely hot climates:
•You can decrease the coolantconcentration to 40%.
•Coolant concentrations below 40%decrease the freeze and corrosionprotection characteristics of thecoolant and may cause enginedamage.
Vehicles driven year-round in non-extremeclimates should use prediluted enginecoolant for optimum cooling system andengine protection.
Checking Coolant CorrosionInhibitor Additive Strength
At specific mileage intervals as listed in thescheduled maintenance informationchapter, the coolant corrosion inhibitoradditive should be checked. An informationmessage may display in the optionalinformation display at this time. Thepurpose of checking is to verify the correctengine coolant concentration (freeze pointprotection) and corrosion inhibitor additivelevel (strength) of the coolant formaximum engine performance andprotection.
Three products are available to confirmthe life and health of the coolant, one tool,a test kit and a coolant inhibitor additive:
•Robinair® Coolant and BatteryRefractometer 75240 –Recommended refractometer to testcoolant concentration. (Rotunda toolpart number: ROB75240).
•Rotunda 328-R071–ELC (AntifreezeCoolant ELC Contamination Kit) –Evaluates the corrosion inhibitoradditive strength. Note the first step isto verify the vehicle’s coolantconcentration is in the correct range of40 – 60%. Coolant concentrationsoutside this range will not provide validtest results. If the report results in apass, for example the cooling systemdoes not show excessivecontamination, the corrosion inhibitoradditive strength is sufficient, and noaction is required. If the report resultsas insufficient (does not pass), thecorrosion inhibitor additive strength ofthe coolant is too low. If the enginecooling system corrosion inhibitoradditive strength is low, add 47 fl oz(1.4 L) of Motorcraft Specialty OrangeEngine Coolant Revitalizer. If thesecondary cooling system corrosioninhibitor additive strength is low, add16 fl oz (0.47 L) of Motorcraft SpecialtyOrange Engine Coolant Revitalizer.
•Motorcraft Specialty Orange EngineCoolant Revitalizer – Additive toboost the corrosion inhibitor levelbased upon the test results of theAntifreeze Coolant ELC ContaminationKit. The Revitalizer may be added twotimes over the life of the coolant. Ifadditional dosages are required, thecooling system must be flushed andrefilled per the instructions in theWorkshop Manual.
Make sure to follow the proper coolant andadditive specifications. See Capacitiesand Specifications (page 415).
