Service Data Recording
Service data recorders in your vehicle arecapable of collecting and storingdiagnostic information about your vehicle.This potentially includes information aboutthe performance or status of varioussystems and modules in the vehicle, suchas engine, throttle, steering or brakesystems. In order to properly diagnose andservice your vehicle, Ford Motor Company(Ford of Canada in Canada), and serviceand repair facilities may access or shareamong them vehicle diagnosticinformation received through a directconnection to your vehicle whendiagnosing or servicing your vehicle.Additionally, Ford Motor Company (Fordof Canada, in Canada) may, wherepermitted by law, use vehicle diagnosticinformation for vehicle improvement orwith other information we may have aboutyou, (for example, your contactinformation), to offer you products orservices that may interest you. Data maybe provided to our service providers suchas part suppliers that may help diagnosemalfunctions, and who are similarlyobligated to protect data. We retain thisdata only as long as necessary to performthese functions or to comply with law. Wemay provide information where requiredin response to official requests to lawenforcement or other governmentauthorities or third parties acting withlawful authority or court order, and suchinformation may be used in legalproceedings. For U.S. only (if equipped), ifyou choose to use connected apps andservices, such as SYNC Vehicle HealthReport or MyFord Mobile App, you consentthat certain diagnostic information may
also be accessed electronically by FordMotor Company and Ford authorizedservice facilities, and that the diagnosticinformation may be used to provideservices to you, personalizing yourexperience, troubleshoot, and to improveproducts and services and offer youproducts and services that may interestyou, where permitted by law. Event Data Recording
This vehicle is equipped with an eventdata recorder. The main purpose of anevent data recorder is to record, incertain crash or near crash-likesituations, such as an airbagdeployment or hitting a road obstacle;this data will assist in understandinghow a vehicle’s systems performed.The event data recorder is designed torecord data related to vehicle dynamicsand safety systems for a short periodof time, typically 30 seconds or less.
The event data recorder in this vehicleis designed to record such data as:
•How various systems in your vehiclewere operating;
•Whether or not the driver andpassenger safety belts werebuckled/fastened;
•How far (if at all) the driver wasdepressing the accelerator and/orthe brake pedal; and

•How fast the vehicle was traveling;and
•Where the driver was positioningthe steering wheel.
This data can help provide a betterunderstanding of the circumstances inwhich crashes and injuries occur.
Note:Event data recorder data isrecorded by your vehicle only if anon-trivial crash situation occurs; no datais recorded by the event data recorderunder normal driving conditions and nopersonal data or information (e.g., name,gender, age, and crash location) isrecorded (see limitations regarding 911Assist and Traffic, directions andInformation privacy below). However,parties, such as law enforcement, couldcombine the event data recorder datawith the type of personally identifyingdata routinely acquired during a crashinvestigation.
To read data recorded by an event datarecorder, special equipment is required,and access to the vehicle or the eventdata recorder is needed. In addition tothe vehicle manufacturer, otherparties, such as law enforcement, thathave such special equipment, can readthe information if they have access tothe vehicle or the event data recorder.Ford Motor Company and Ford ofCanada do not access event datarecorder information without obtainingconsent, unless pursuant to court orderor where required by law enforcement,other government authorities or otherthird parties acting with lawfulauthority. Other parties may seek toaccess the information independentlyof Ford Motor Company and Ford ofCanada.
Note:Including to the extent that anylaw pertaining to Event Data Recordersapplies to SYNC or its features, pleasenote the following: Once 911 Assist (ifequipped) is enabled (set ON), 911 Assistmay, through any paired and connectedcell phone, disclose to emergencyservices that the vehicle has been in acrash involving the deployment of anairbag or, in certain vehicles, theactivation of the fuel pump shut-off.Certain versions or updates to 911 Assistmay also be capable of being used toelectronically or verbally provide to 911operators the vehicle location (such aslatitude and longitude), and/or otherdetails about the vehicle or crash orpersonal information about theoccupants to assist 911 operators toprovide the most appropriate emergencyservices. If you do not want to disclosethis information, do not activate the 911Assist feature. See SYNC™ (page 455).
Additionally, when you connect toTraffic, Directions and Information (ifequipped, U.S. only), the service usesGPS technology and advanced vehiclesensors to collect the vehicle’s currentlocation, travel direction, and speed(“vehicle travel information”), only tohelp provide you with the directions,traffic reports, or business searchesthat you request. WARNINGS
Never place your arm over the airbagmodule as a deploying airbag canresult in serious arm fractures orother injuries.
Airbags can kill or injure a child in achild restraint. Never place arear-facing child restraint in front ofan active airbag. If you must use aforward-facing child restraint in the frontseat, move the seat upon which the childseat is installed all the way back.
The driver and front passenger airbagsdeploy during significant frontal and nearfrontal crashes.
The driver and passenger front airbagsystem consists of:
•Driver and passenger airbag modules.
· Crash sensors and monitoringsystem with readiness indicator.See Crash Sensors and AirbagIndicator (page 52).
Passenger Airbag On and OffSwitch (If Equipped)
WARNINGS
Even with advanced restraintssystems, properly restrain children12 and under in a rear seatingposition. Failure to follow this couldseriously increase the risk of injury or death.
The front passenger airbag is notdesigned to offer protection to anoccupant in the center seatingposition.
Your vehicle may have an airbagdeactivation switch. Before driving,always look at the switch to makesure it is in the appropriate position. Failureto put the switch in the proper position canincrease the risk of serious injury or deathin a crash.
High-series vehicles (if equipped)
The front passenger airbag on and offswitch has indicators that illuminate,indicating that the front passenger frontalairbag is either on or off. The indicator lampis near the center of the instrument panel.
Note:The passenger airbag status indicatorOFF and ON lamps illuminate for a shortperiod of time when you switch the ignitionon to confirm it is functional.

Note:The indicator lamp illuminates for ashort period of time when you switch theignition on to confirm it is functional.
Turning the Passenger Airbag Off
WARNINGS
If the light does not illuminate whenthe passenger airbag switch is offand you switch the ignition on, havethe passenger airbag switch servicedimmediately by a qualified technician.
To avoid switching on the airbag,always remove the ignition key withthe switch in the off position.
WARNINGS
If your vehicle has rear seats, alwaystransport children who are 12 andyounger in the rear seat. Always useseatbelts and child restraints properly. Donot place a child in a rear facing infant seatin the front seat unless your vehicle isequipped with an airbag on and off switchand the passenger airbag is turned off. Thisis because the back of the infant seat istoo close to the inflating airbag and therisk of a fatal injury to the infant when theairbag inflates is substantial.

1. Insert the ignition key, turn the switchto OFF and hold in OFF while removingthe key.
2. When you switch the ignition on, thepassenger airbag off light illuminatesbriefly, momentarily shuts off and thenturns back on. This indicates that thepassenger airbag is deactivated.
Turning the Passenger Airbag Back On
WARNINGS
The seatbelts for the driver and rightfront passenger seating positions arespecifically designed to operatetogether with the airbags in certain typesof crashes. When you switch off yourairbag, you not only lose the protection ofthe airbag, you also may reduce theeffectiveness of your seatbelt system. Ifthe passenger does not meet therequirements stated in the NationalHighway Traffic Safety Administration orTransport Canada deactivation criteria,switching off the airbag can increase therisk of serious injury or death in a crash.
If your vehicle has rear seats, alwaystransport children who are 12 andyounger in the rear seat. Always useseatbelts and child restraints properly. Donot place a child in a rear facing infant seatin the front seat unless your vehicle isequipped with an airbag on and off switchand the passenger airbag is turned off. The vast majority of drivers and passengersare much safer with an airbag thanwithout. To do their job and reduce the riskof life threatening injuries, airbags mustopen with great force, and this force canpose a potentially deadly risk in somesituations, particularly when a front seatoccupant is not properly buckled up. Themost effective way to reduce the risk ofunnecessary airbag injuries withoutreducing the overall safety of the vehicleis to make sure all occupants are properlyrestrained in the vehicle, especially in the

front seat. This provides the protection ofseatbelts and permits the airbags toprovide the additional protection they weredesigned to provide. If you choose todeactivate your airbag, you are losing thevery significant risk reducing benefits ofthe airbag and you are also reducing theeffectiveness of the seatbelts, becauseseatbelts in modern vehicles are designedto work as a safety system with theairbags.
National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration Deactivation Criteria(Excluding Canada)
WARNING
This vehicle has special energymanagement seatbelts for the driverand right front passenger. Theseparticular seatbelts are specificallydesigned to work with airbags to helpreduce the risk of injury in a crash. Theenergy management seatbelt gives orreleases additional seatbelt webbing insome accidents to reduce theconcentration of force on an occupant'schest and to reduce the risk of certain bonefractures and injuries to underlying organs.In a crash, if the airbag is off, this energymanagement seatbelt might permit thepassenger wearing the seatbelt to moveforward enough to have a serious or fatalinjury. The more severe the crash, and theheavier the occupant, the greater the risk.Make sure the airbag is on for anypassenger who does not qualify under theNational Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration deactivation criteria.
1.Infant. An infant (less than 1 year old)must ride in the front seat because:
•The vehicle has no rear seat;
•The vehicle has a rear seat too smallto accommodate a rear-facing infantseat; or
•The infant has a medical conditionwhich, according to the infant'sphysician, makes it necessary for theinfant to ride in the front so that thedriver can constantly monitor thechild's condition.
2.Child age 1 to 12. A child age 1 to 12 mustride in the front seat because:
•The vehicle has no rear seat;
•Although children ages 1 to 12 ride inthe rear seat(s) whenever possible,children ages 1 to 12 sometimes mustride in the front because no space isavailable in the rear seat(s) of thevehicle; or

•Causes the passenger airbag to posea special risk for the passenger;

Proper Driver and Front PassengerSeating Adjustment
WARNING
National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration (NHTSA)recommends a minimum distanceof at least 10 in (25 cm) between anoccupant’s chest and the driver airbagmodule.
To properly position yourself away fromthe airbag:
•Move your seat to the rear as far as youcan while still reaching the pedalscomfortably.
•Recline the seat slightly (one or twodegrees) from the upright position.
