Trailer towing
Sp eed
The higher the speed, the more d ifficult it be­
comes for the driver to contro l the rig. Do not
dr ive at the maximum permissible speed. Reduce
your speed even more if load, w eather or wind
conditions are unfavorable -particularly when
going downhill.

Do not try
to stop the swayin g by ac cele rating.
Observe speed limits . In some areas, speeds for
vehicles towing trailers are lower than for reg ular
ve hicles.
A lways apply b rakes early . When dr iving down­
hi ll, shi ft into a lower gear to use the engine
braking effect to slow the vehicle. Use of the
brakes a lone can cause them to overheat and fail.
Coolant temperature
The coolant temperatu re gauge ¢ page 8 must
be observed ca refully . If the needle moves close
to the upper end of the scale, reduce speed im ­
mediately and/or turn off the air conditioner .

A WARNING
Anyone not properly restrained in a moving
vehicle is at a much greater risk in an acci­
dent . Never let anyone ride in your car who is
not properly wearing the restraints provided
by Audi .

Important to know
Your veh icle hand les different ly when tow ing a
tra iler because of the additional weight and dif ­
fe rent weight d istr ibut ion . Safety, performance
and economy w ill great ly depend on how careful­
ly you load you r trailer and operate your rig .

Before you actually tow your trailer, practice
turning, stopping and backing up in an area away
from traffic . Keep pract icing unt il yo u h ave be ­
come comp lete ly familiar w ith the way your vehi­
cle-tra iler combination behaves and responds.
Backing up is difficult and requires practice .
Backing up w ith a trailer generally req uires steer ­
i ng action opposite to that when backing up your
vehicle without a trailer.
Maintain a greater distance between your vehicle
and the one in front of you . You will need more
room to stop. To compensate for the trailer, you
will need a larger than normal turning radius.
When passing, remember that you cannot accel­ erate as fast as you normally wou ld because of
the added load. Make sure you have enough room
to pass. After passing, allow p lenty of room for
your trailer before changing lanes again.
Avo id jerky starts, sharp turns or rapid lane
changes.

- Do not tow a trailer during the break-in peri­
od of your veh icle.
- If you tow a trai ler, your Audi may requi re
more frequent maintenance due to the ex­

' Parking on a slope
Do not park on a slope with a trailer. If it cannot
be avoided, do so only after doing the following:
When parking:

hicle and the trailer wheels .
.,. With choc ks in place, slowly release the brakes
until the wheel chocks absorb the load.
.,. Turn the wheels towards the curb .

- To reduce the risk of cuts, protect yourself
from sharp metal components when wash­
ing the underbody or the inside of the wheel
housings .
- After washing the vehicle, the brak ing effect
may be delayed due to mo isture on the
brake rotors or ice in the w inter . This in­
creases the risk of an acc ident. The brakes
must be d ried fi rst w ith a few careful b rake
applications.

wash, yo u m ust fold the exte rior m irrors in
to reduce the risk of damage. Power fo ld ing

signs on vehicle parts painted with matte
finish paint . The paint cou ld be damaged
when the stickers or magne ts are re­
moved .
@ For the sake of the environment
Only wash t he vehicle in facilities s pec ially de­
s igned for that pu rpose . This will reduce the
r isk of dirty wate r contaminated with oil from
ente ring the sewe r sys tem.

Gasoline
Applies to: vehicles with gaso line engine
Using the right fuel helps keep the environment
clean and prevents engine damage .
Fuel re co mm endati on
The fuel recommended for your vehicle is unlead­
ed pr em ium
grade gasoline. Audi recommends
using TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline with a mini­
mum octane rat ing of 91 AKI (95 RON). For more
information on TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline,
p lease go to the official website
(www.toptiergas .com) .
The recommended gasoline octane rating for
your engine can also be found on a label located
on the inside of the fuel filler flap . Th is rating
may be spec ified as AK I or RON.
Your veh icle may also be operated using unlead­
ed regular gasoline with a min imum octane rat ­
ing of
87 AKl/9 1 RON . However, using 87 AKl/91
RON octane f uel w ill slightly reduce engine pe r­
fo rmance.
Us e un lead ed g asolin e onl y. Unleaded gasoline
is available throughout t he USA, Canada, and in
most Eu ropean count ries . We recommend that
you do not ta ke your vehicle to areas or countries
where u nleaded gasol ine may not be availab le.

Octane r ating
Octane rating indicates a gasoline's ability to re­
sist engine damaging "knock" caused by prema­
ture ignit ion a nd detonation . Therefore , buy ing
the co rrect grade of gasoline is very important to
h e lp p revent poss ible engine damage and a loss
of eng ine performance.
Gasoline most commonly used in the Un ited
States and Canada has the following octane rat­
ings that can usually be fo und on the filler pump:
- Premium Grade: 91 -96 AKI
Fuel and R efueling
- Reg ular G rade: 87 -90 AK I

You may use unleaded gasoline blended with al­
cohol or MTB E (commonly referred to as oxygen ­
ates) if the blended m ixture meets the follow ing
c riteria:

- Blend must contain no more than 3% metha-
nol.
- Blend must contain more than 2% co -solvents.

Under normal operating conditions, never car ­
ry additional fuel containers in you r car. Gas
canisters and other containers used to trans­
port fuel can be dangerous . Such containers,
full or empty, may leak and could cause a fire
in a collision. If you must transport fuel to
use for your lawn mower, snow blower, etc.,
be very careful and a lways observe local and
state laws regarding the use, transportation
and sto rage of such fue l conta iners. Make cer­
tain the container meets industry standards (ANSI/ASTM F852 -86) .
(D Note
Never drive you r vehicle unt il the fuel tank is
comp letely empty. The irregular supply of
fue l can cause m isfiring. Gasoline cou ld enter
the exhaust system and damage the catalytic
converter.

When activating the central locking, the fuel f ill­
er flap is automatically unlocked o r locked. Re­
fuel the vehicle with the ignition turned
off.

into the fuel filler neck as far as it will go.

nozzle switches off automatically when the
tank is full.

wise as far as it will go.
.. Close the fuel filler flap.
To avoid fuel spilling or evaporating from the fuel
tank always close fuel cap properly and com­
plete ly. An improperly closed fuel filler cap may
also cause the MIL lamp¢

(only vehicles with gasoline engine).

Improper refueling or handling of fuel can
cause fire, explos ion and severe burns.
- Fuel is highly flammable and can cause se­
vere burns and other injuries.

- Fa ilure to shut the engine off while refuel­
ing and/or to insert the pump nozzle fully into the fue l filler neck could cause fuel to
spray out of fi ller neck or to overflow. Fue l
spray and ove rflowing f uel can ca use a fire .
- Never use a ce llular telephone while refuel­
ing. The electromagnetic radiation can
cause sparks t hat can ignite fuel vapors and
cause a fire.
- Never get back into your vehicle whi le refu­
eling. If in exceptional circumstances you
must get back in your vehicle wh ile refuel­
ing, make certain that you close the door
and touch metal to discharge static electric-
ity before touching t he f iller nozzle again. .,_

Selective catalytic reduction (AdBlue/DEF)
General information
Applies to: veh icles w ith selective catalyt ic reduction
In vehicles with selective catalytic reduction, a
urea solution (Ad B lue/DEF) is injected into the
exhaust system before a nitrogen oxide catalytic
converter to reduce nitrogen emissions. The urea
solution is known as Ad Blue or DEF (Diesel Ex ­
haust Fluid) . AdBlue is used in the following.
The AdBlue is carried in a separate tank in the ve­
hicle. The Ad Blue usage accounts for approxi­ mately 0 .5% to 2.5% of the diesel fuel that is
used.
When a message about refilling the Ad Blue ap­
pears in the instrument cluster display, you must
refill the Ad Blue yourself or have it refilled by an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service
Facility ¢ page 215.
(D} Tips
-The display indicates the distance remaining

page 214. If the Ad Bl­
ue tank is completely empty, the engine will
not start again after the ignition is switched
off.
-Ad Blue is required by law to operate this ve­
hicle.
Messages in the instrument cluster display
Applies to: vehicles with selective catalytic reduction
The display indicates if the Ad Blue level is low or
if there is a system malfunction.

You will be informed if the Ad Blue in the tank
drops below a certain level.

AdBlue: System fault No restart!

This message appears if the system has detected
that the tank was filled incorrectly or that there
is a malfunction . Drive immediately to the near­
est authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility to have the malfunction correct­
ed . Otherwise you will not be able to star t the en­
gine again once you stop it.

Checking and Filling

open the hood if you see or hear steam or
coo lant escaping from the engine compart­
ment. Wa it until no steam or coolant can be

engine compartment.

Using the proper engine oil is important for the
functionality and service life of the eng ine. Your
engine was factory-filled with a high-quality oil
which can usually be used throughout the entire
year.

Your Limited New Vehicle Warranty does not
cover damage or malfunctions due to failure
to follow recommended maintenance and use
requirements as set forth in the Audi Owner's
Manual and Warranty
& Maintenance booklet.
- Use only a high quality eng ine oil that ex-
pressly complies wi th the Audi oil quality
standard specified for your vehicle's engine.
Using any other oil can cause serious engine
damage.
- Do not mix any lub ricants or other additives
i nto the engine oil. Doing so can cause en­
g ine damage.

If you need to add oil and there is none availa­
ble tha t meets the Audi o il quality standard
your eng ine requi res, you may add a tota l of
no more than 0 .5 quart/li ter of a h igh-quality
"synthetic"oil that meets the fo llowing speci­
fications.
- Vehicles with gasoline eng ine: ACEA A3 or
API SM with a viscosity grade of SAE OW-30,
SAE 5W-30 or SAE 5W-40.
- Vehicles w it h diese l engine: ACEA C3 o r
API CF with a viscosity grade of SAE OW-30
or SAE 5W-30.

Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade­
quate amount of oil to lubricate and cool all of
its moving parts.
In order to provide effective lub rication and cool ­
ing of internal engine components, all internal
combust ion engines consume a certa in amount
of oil. Oil consumption var ies from engine to en­
gine and may change significantly over the life of
the engine . Typically, engines w ith a specified
break-in period (see
c::;,page 194) consume more
o il dur ing the break-in per iod than they consume
after o il consumption has stabi lized .
Under normal cond itions, the rate of oil con­
sumption depends on t he quality and viscos ity of
the oil, the RPM (revolutions per m inute) at
wh ich the engine is operated, the ambient tem­
perature and road condit ions. Furthe r facto rs a re
t h e amount of o il d ilution from water condensa­
tion or fue l residue and the oxidation level of the
oi l. As any engine is subject to wear as mileage
builds up, the oil consumption may increase over
time unt il replacement of worn components may
become necessary.
With a ll these variab les coming into p lay, no
standard rate of oi l consumption can be estab­
li shed or spec ified . There is no alternative to reg­
ular and frequent checking of the oi l level, see
Note .
