Loading
The load carrying capacity of your vehicle is determined by factors such as the number ofpassengers, the amount of cargo, the weight ofany accessories that may be installed, etc.
Tailgate opening button on the lighting panel
Open the tailgate by pressing the button on the lighting panel, pressing the
button on the
remote key or by using the optional foot move- ment sensor under the rear bumper.
Loading recommendations
• Load objects in the cargo compartment against the backrest whenever possible.
• If the backrests of the second row seats arefolded down, they should not be in contactwith the front seat backrests. This could impede the function of the WhiplashProtection System (WHIPS).
• Unstable loads can be secured to the loadanchoring eyelets with straps or web lash-ings to help keep them from shifting.
• Stop the engine and apply the parking brakewhen loading or unloading long objects. Thegear selector can be knocked out of positionby long loads, which could set the vehicle inmotion.
WARNING
•
Stop the engine, put the gear selector in P
, and apply the parking brake when
loading or unloading long objects.
• The vehicle's driving characteristics may change depending on the weight and dis-tribution of the load.
• A 44-pound (20 kg) object produces aforce of 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg) in ahead-on collision at 30 mph (50 km/h).
• The cargo area and rear seat should notbe loaded to a level higher than 2 in.(5 cm) below the upper edge of the rearside windows. Objects placed higher thanthis level could impede the function ofthe Inflatable Curtain.
WARNING
•
Cover sharp edges on long loads to help prevent injury to occupants. Secure theload to help prevent shifting during sud-den stops.
• Always secure large and heavy objectswith a seat belt or cargo retaining straps.
• Always secure the load to help prevent itfrom moving in the event of sudden stops.
• Switch off the engine, apply the parking brake and put the gear selector in
P
when loading and unloading the vehicle.
Raising/lowering the rear-end of the vehicle *
Using the buttons on the read edge of the cargo compartment, the rear-end of the vehicle (thelevel of the cargo compartment floor) can beraised or lowered for easier loading or to make attaching a trailer 2
simpler.
2 An accessory trailer hitch can be purchased from a Volvo retailer.

The radar sensor's capacity to detect vehicles ahead is impeded:
• if the speed of the vehicle ahead differs greatly from your vehicle's speed.
Limited field of visionThe radar sensor has a limited field of vision. In some situations it may detect a vehicle later thanexpected or not detect other vehicles at all.
Radar sensor's field of vision
In certain situations, the radar sensor cannot detect vehicles at close quarters, for examplea vehicle that suddenly enters the lanebetween your vehicle and the target vehicle.
Small vehicles, such as motorcycles, or vehi- cles not driving in the center of the lane mayremain undetected.
In curves, the radar sensor may detect the wrong vehicle or lose sight of the target vehi-cle.
Low trailer in the radar shadow
Low trailers may also be difficult to detect or may not be detected at all. The driver should be extraalert in situations of this type.
High temperaturesIf the temperature in the passenger compartmentis very high, the camera and radar sensor may betemporarily turned off for approx. 15 minutesafter the engine has been started to protect theirelectronic components. When the temperaturehas cooled sufficiently, the camera and radarsensor will restart automatically.

WARNING
•Pilot Assist is designed to be a supple- mentary driving aid and cannot cover alldriving situations, traffic, weather and/orroad conditions.
• The driver should be familiar with all ofthe information in this article regardingPilot Assist, including its limitations.
• Pilot Assist is not intended to replace thedriver's attention and judgement.
• Pilot Assist must only be used wherethere are clearly visible traffic lane sidemarker lines on both sides of the currenttraffic lane. In other circumstances thereis an increased risk of collision with sur-rounding obstacles that are not detectedby the system.
• The driver is always responsible for steer-ing the vehicle and maintaining a suitablespeed and distance to the vehicle aheadand must intervene if necessary, even ifPilot Assist is being used.
Pilot Assist is designed to regulate speed smoothly but in situations calling for fast braking, the driver must apply the brakes. This applies tosituations where there are considerable differen-ces in speed or if the vehicle ahead brakes sud-denly. Due to the limitations of the camera andradar sensor, the system may apply the brakes inyour vehicle suddenly or not at all. The default speed for Pilot Assist is preset toapprox. 30 mph (50 km/h) and cannot bechanged. If the vehicle ahead increases speed toover 30 mph (50 km/h) and pulls away from yourvehicle, Pilot Assist will go into standby mode.
NOTE
•
Pilot Assist maintenance should only be carried out by a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician.
• Pilot Assist regulates your vehicle'sspeed using the accelerator pedal andthe brakes. Please be aware that theremay be a faint sound from the brakeswhen the system is using them.
WARNING
•Pilot Assist does not react to people or animals, or small vehicles such as bicy-cles and motorcycles. It also does notreact to low trailers, slow moving, parkedor approaching vehicles, or stationaryobjects.
• Do not use Pilot Assist in demandingdriving conditions such as city driving orother heavy traffic situations, in slipperyconditions, when there is a great deal ofwater or slush on the road, during heavyrain or snow, in poor visibility, on windingroads or on highway on- or off-ramps.

WARNING
•Pilot Assist is not a collision avoidance system. The driver is always responsiblefor applying the brakes if the system doesnot detect another vehicle.
• Pilot Assist uses the vehicle's cameraand radar sensor, which have limitations.
Pilot Assist may deactivate or not function optimally if:
• the lane's side market lines are missing, badly faded or cross each other.
• the division of lanes is not clear, e.g.,when a line divides or merges withanother, at exits or if there are many roadsigns/markers.
• if there are edges or other lines on ornear the lane, e.g., curbs, cracks, repairedareas, sharp shadows, etc.
• the lane is narrow or winding.
• the weather conditions (rain, snow, fog, slush, poor visibility, backlighting, etc).
The driver should also be aware that Pilot Assist has the following limitations:
• High curbs, barriers and temporary obsta- cles (cones, barriers etc) may not bedetected or could be detected incorrectlyas side marker lines, which may create arisk of collision. The driver must ensure asafe distance to these obstacles.
• The camera or radar sensor may not beable to detect objects if there are pot-holes or if there are stationary objectspartially or completely blocking the road.
• Pilot Assist does not "see" pedestrians, animals, etc.
• Pilot Assist's steering capacity is limitedand may not always be able to help thedriver keep the vehicle in the lane.
The driver can always take action to override Pilot Assist.
Steep roads and/or heavy loadsPilot Assist is primarily intended for use on rela-tively level roads. The function may not be able tomaintain the correct time interval to the vehicleahead on when driving down steep hills, when thevehicle is transporting a heavy load or if it is tow-ing a trailer. The driver should be attentive andprepared to apply the brakes in these situations.

Park Assist *
The Park Assist system is designed to assist you
when driving into parking spaces, garages, etc. An audible signal and symbols in the instrumentpanel and center display indicate the distance tothe object.
Display view showing object zones and sensor sectors
The center display shows an overview of the vehi- cle in relation to objects that have been detected. The highlighted sector shows which of the sen- sors has detected the object. The closer thehighlighted sector is to the vehicle symbol, thecloser the actual object is to your vehicle. The Park Assist system uses an intermittent tone that pulses faster as you come closer to anobject. Sound from the infotainment system willbe temporarily turned down.

The tone becomes constant when you are within approximately 1 ft (30 cm) of an object and theinnermost sensor field will be red. If there areobjects within this distance both behind and infront of the vehicle, the tone alternates betweenfront and rear speakers. While an audible signal is being given, its volume level can be raised/lowered using the
>II control
in the center console or can be adjusted in the Setting menu.
WARNING
Park Assist is an information system, NOT a safety system. This system is designed to bea supplementary aid when parking the vehicle. It is not, however, intended to replace the driv-er's attention and judgement.
Rear park assist
The system's rear sensors are activated automat- ically when the engine is started and are active ifthe vehicle rolls rearward with the gear selector in N or if R has been selected.
The distance monitored behind the vehicle is approximately 5 ft (1.5 m). The audible signalcomes from the rear speakers. The rear sensors will be deactivated automatically when towing a trailer if Volvo genuine trailer wir-ing is used. If a non-Volvo trailer hitch is beingused, it may be necessary to switch off the sys-tem manually.
Side park assist
The system's side sensors are activated automat- ically when the engine is started and are active atspeeds below approximately 6 mph (10 km/h). The distance monitored along the sides of thevehicle is approximately 1 ft (0.3 m). The audiblesignal comes from the side speakers.
Front park assist
The system's front sensors are activated auto- matically when the engine is started and areactive at speeds below approximately 6 mph(10 km/h). The distance monitored in front of the vehicle is approximately 2.5 ft (0.8 m). The audible signalcomes from the front speakers. Front Park Assist is deactivated if the parking brake is applied or if the gear selector is put in
P.
When installing auxiliary headlights, be sure that they do not obstruct the front sensors. Otherwise, these lights could trigger a Park Assist warning.
