Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Auto-Check contro l monitors the funct io n of
certa in vehicle features and components. It sim ­
p ly makes sure these features and components
a re working properly . T he Auto-Check control
works as long as the ignition is on, as well as
wheneve r the ve hicle is driven .

If a component is ma lfunctioning or if the need
for an urgent repa ir has been detected, this will
a p pear in the ins trument cluste r display . You w ill
a lso hear an audib le wa rning tone . T he disp lays
a re color coded in e ithe r re d or yellow depe nding
o n their level of p rior ity .
A red symbol means
Danger , a yellow symbo l in ­
d icates
Warning . In ce rtain s ituations, informa­
tion message for the dr ive r appea r in a ddi tion to
the re d and yellow sym bols.
Note about automatic transmission
The Auto -Check Co ntrol w ill automatically pe r­
form a test each time you switch o n the ignition .
W it h the selector lever in P o r N, the fo llow ing
m essage appe ars in t he disp lay :
When stationary apply brake pedal while select­
ing gear
When you select a different gear (for example: R ,
D , etc.), the message w ill disappea r and the A u­
to -Check fu nction is d isplayed .
If th e re is a malfunct io n, then the malfunction
message will appear about 15 seconds afte r yo u
start the ve hicle. At the same time you w ill hear a
war ning tone.

0 Alternator malfunction
If the . symbo l in the instr ument pane l display
flashes, then there is a ma lfunction in the alter­
nator or the vehicle elect ronics . A warning to the
driver will appear, too . The driver warn ing goes
out after about 5 seconds, but it can be brought up at any t ime by pressing the
!SET ! button aga in.
U sua lly, yo u can sti ll drive to the next dea lership.
Turn off all but the most necessary e lectr ica l con­
s u mers, since these drain the vehicle's battery.

gine . The coolant pump is not working any­

BRAKE/C(D) Brake system malfunction
A malfunction in the brake system must be re­
paired as soon as possible.
If the warning /ind icator light 1111 (USA mod ­
els) . (Canada models) in the instrument clus­
ter flashes, there is a brake system ma lfunction.

cooling system -you could damage your en­

The red engine oil pressure warning symbol re­
quires immedia te service or repair. Driving wi th a
low oil pressure indi cation is likely to cause se­
vere engine damage .
If the . symbol on the display flashes, the en ­
g ine oil pressure is too low . A driver message ap­
pears as well to explain the malfunction in more
deta il. The driver warn ing goes ou t afte r about 5
seconds, but it ca n be bro ugh t up at any t ime by

- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicato r for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in

Checking and Filling
@ Tips
-The oil pressure warning display. is not
an indicator of the oil level. Do not rely on
i t. Instead , check the oil level in your en­
gine at regular intervals, preferably each
time you refuel, and always before going
on a long trip.
- If you have the impression your engine con­
sumes excessive amounts of oil, we recom­
mend that you cons ult an autho rized Aud i
dealer to have the cause of your concern
properly diagnosed . Keep in mind that the
accurate measurement of oil consumption
requires great care and may take some
time. An authorized Audi dealer has instruc­
tions about how to measure oil consump­
tion accurately.
Checking the engine oil level

Read oil level
• Park yo ur vehicle so that it is hor izonta lly level.
• Shut the engine off when it is at operating tem-
perature.
• Switch only the ignition back on.
• Wait approx . two minutes.

The oil level needs to be checked at regular inter­
vals. The best times to do this are whenever you refuel and pr ior to long trips .

Depending on the way the vehicle is driven and
the operating conditions, oil consumption can be
up to a 1/2 quart per 600 miles (0.5 liter per
1,000 km). Consumption may be higher w it hin
the first 3,000 miles (5,000 km).
(D Tips
The o il level indicator in the radio or MMI*
D isp lay is only an information display. If the
oil level is too low, a m inimum oil warning ap­
pears in the instrument cluster. Add oil

page 224. If the hood has been opened,
the current oil level is show n in the instru­
ment cluster the next time the ignition is
switched on.

To obtain an accurate reading, the engine must
be sw itched
off.
The expansion tank in your vehicle is equipped
with an electric coolant level sensor.
When the coo lant level is too low, the warning
light in the Auto-Check System
c:> page 29 wi ll
blink until you add coolant and the level has been
restored to normal. Even though there is an e lec­
tr ic coolant level sensor, we still recommend you
check the coolant level from time to time.
Coolant loss
Coolant loss may indicate a leak in the cooling
syst em. In the event of coolant loss, the cooling
system should be inspected immediately by your
authorized Audi dealer. It is not enough merely
to add coolant .
In a
sealed system, losses can occur only if the
boiling point of the coo lant is exceeded as a re­
sult of overheat ing .
(D Note
Do not add any type of radiator leak sealant
to your veh icle's engine coolant. Adding radia­
tor repair fluid may adversely affect the func­
tion and performance of your cooling system
and could result in damage not covered by
your New Vehicle Limited Warranty .
Adding coolant
Be very careful when adding engine coolant.
Before you check anyth ing in the eng ine compart­
ment,

Replacement engine coolant must conform to ex­
act specifications

We recommend using only coolant addit ive Gl2 +
+ , Gl3
or in an emergency Gl2+. Do not use a
different additive . In an emergency use plain wa­
ter until you can get the correct addit ive and can
restore the correct ratio. This should be done as
soon as possible.
If you have lost a considerable amount of coo l­
ant, then you shou ld add cold antifreeze and cold
water only whe n the engine is cold.
Always use
new e ngine coolant when refilling.
Do not fill coolant above the "MAX " mark. Excess
coolant will be forced out through the pressure
relief valve in the cap when the engine becomes
hot.
A WARNING
-- The cooling system is under pressure and
can get very hot. Reduce the risk of scalding
from hot coolant by following these steps .
- Turn
off the eng ine an d allow it to cool
down.
- Protect your face, hands and arms from
escaping fluid and steam by covering the
cap with a large, thick rag.
- Tu rn the cap slowly and very carefully in a
counter-clockwise direction whil e applying
light, downward pressure on the top o f
the cap .

There are limits to the amount of
load or weight that any vehicle
and any tire can carry. A vehicle
that is overloaded will not handle
well and is more difficult to stop.
Overloading can not only lead to
loss of vehicle control, but can al­
so damage important parts of the
vehicle and can lead to sudden

Your veh icle is equipped with a tire repair kit (Tire
Mobility System) .
In the event of a flat tire, the tire repair kit is
found in the luggage compartment behind the right side trim panel, and is made up of tire seal­
ant and a compressor¢
page 104 , fig. 115.
Only tire damage caused by foreign objects up to
approx imately 0.16 in
( 4 mm ) in diameter can be
safely sealed with the tire repair kit.
The foreign object can stay in the tire .
The tire sealant may not be used :
-If the t i re has cuts or punctures that are larger
than 0.16 in (4 mm)

-If the rim is damaged @.
- If you drove with very low t ire pressure or with-
out air in the tire@.

The tire repair kit is able to be used at tempera­
tures as low as -4
°F ( -20 °().
A WARNING
Pay attent ion to the following after repairing
the tire:
- Do not drive faster than SO mph (80 km/h) .

-Avoid hard acce leration, braking sharply,
and fast cornering .
- The vehicle may become more difficult to
control.
- Tires sealed with the tire repair kit are only
meant to be used

- If the t ire has cuts or punctures that are
larger than 0.16 in (4 mm) .
- If the rim is damaged.
- If you drove with very low tire pressure or
without air in the tire.
- Obta in qualified help if it is not possible to
perform the repair with the tire sealant.
- The tire sealant must not come in contact
with skin, eyes, or clothes.
- If tire sealant gets in you r eyes or on your
skin, thoroughly rinse the affected area im­ mediately with clean water .
- Change yo ur clothes immediately if they get
tire sealant on them.
- Do not inha le the fumes .
- If the tire sea la nt is swallowed, thoro ughly
rinse out your mouth and drink lots of wa­
ter .
- Do not induce vomiting . Seek medical atten ­
tion immediately.
- If an a llergic reaction occurs, seek immedi­
ate med ica l attent ion .
- Keep the t ire sealant away from child ren.

Used sealant bottles may be returned to yo ur
a uthorized Audi dea le r fo r disposal.
@ Tips
- If sealant has spilled out, let it d ry and then
you ca n remove it by pee ling it away like a
foil.
- Note the expiration date on the sealant bot­
tle. Rep lace the ti re sealant at an a utho r­
ized Aud i dea le rship.
- Radio reception may be impaired when the
compressor is in use.

Filling a tire
.,. Shake the bottle thoroughly before filling.
.,. Screw the accompanying filling hose complete­
ly onto the bottle. This breaks through the foil
seal automatically at the connection .
.,. Remove the valve cap from the tire valve and
unscrew the valve insert using the accompany­
ing valve insert tool

.,. Lay the valve insert on a clean surface .
.,. Remove the sealing plug from the filling hose
and connect the hose to the tire valve .
.,. Hold the bottle with the bottom facing upward
and empty the entire contents into the tire .
.,. Then pull out the hose and screw the valve in­
sert tightly back into the tire valve.
258 Inflating a tire

Screw the filling hose for the compressor onto
the tire valve and insert the connector into the
cigarette lighter.
.. Inflate the tire to between 29 PSI (200 kPA)
and 36 PSI (250 kPA) and read the pressure on
the gauge .
.,. If this tire pressure is not reached, drive your
vehicle approximately 33
ft (10 meters) for ­
ward or backward so that the sealant can be re­
distributed inside the tire. If at this time the re­
quired air pressure still cannot be reached, the
tire is too badly damaged and cannot be re­
paired with the tire sealant.
Final inspection
.,. Stop the vehicle after driving for about 10 mi­
nutes and check the tire pressure.
.,. If the tire pressure is lower than 19 PSI
(130 kPA), then the tire is too severely dam­
aged. Do not continue driving. Please seek pro­
fessional assistance .
&_ WARNING
- Turn on the emergency flashers if you have a
flat tire while in moving traffic. This is for
your protection and the for the safety of
other drivers.
- Take care to move all of the passengers to a
safe place (behind a guard rail for example) .
- Read and follow the manufacturer's safety
precautions on the compressor and in the instructions on the bottle of sealant!
- If a tire pressure of 29 PSI (200 kPA) cannot
reached after inflating for 12 minutes, then
the tire is too severely damaged. Do not
continue driving.
- Obtain qualified help if it is not possible to
perform the repair with the tire sealant .
- If the tire pressure is less than 19 PSI
(130 kPA) after 10 minutes of driving, then
the tire is too severely damaged . Do not
continue driving. Seek professional assis­
tance .
