brakes still function with their normal power, but
ABS is not active.
Drive to your authorized Audi dealer or qualified
workshop immediately to have the malfunction
corrected.
A WARNING
If the 1111111 (USA models) ;II (Canada mod­
els) brake system indicator light turns on to­
gether with the ABS and ESC indicator lights,
the ABS/ESC regulating function may have
failed . Functions that stabilize the vehicle are
no longer available . This could cause the vehi­
cle to swerve and increase the risk of sliding.
Drive carefully to the nearest authorized Audi
dealer or other qualified workshop and have
the malfunction corrected.

CJ};/ !f Safety systems
The II (USA models) !E,I (Canada models) indi­
cator light monitors the safety systems (e.g . air­
bags, pretensioners) and illuminates for a few
seconds each time you switch the ignition on.
If the II (USA models) !E,I (Canada models) in­
dicator light does not go out, or if it illuminates
while you are driving, or if it starts to blink, then
there is a malfunction somewhere in the system.
If the light does not illuminate when you switch
the ignition on, this also means there is a mal­
function .
A WARNING
If you have a malfunction in the safety sys­
tems, contact your authorized Audi dealer im­
mediately. Otherwise the safety systems may
not work properly in an accident.

ill Tire pressure monitoring system -
telltale indicator lamp
Applies to vehicles: with tire pressure mon itoring system
The warning/indicator light appears in the event
of a significant loss of tire pressure or if there is
a malfunction.
The indicator light RI] illuminates to check the
function when you switch on the ignition.
If the
RI] symbol remains on or blinks after you
switch on the ignition, there is a loss of tire pres­
sure or a system malfunction. If there is a system
malfunction, see your author ized Audi dealer as
soon as possible.

¢¢ Turn signals
The indicator light blinks when you use either
turn signal .
Whenever you use the left Hor the right B
turn signal, the indicator light blinks. When you
use the emergency flashers, both indicator lights
flash .
If one of the turn signal light bulbs burn out, the
turn signal will blink twice as fast as normal.
This does not apply, however, in towing mode.
The indicator light does not flash if a turn signal
is out on the trailer or the towing vehicle. Addi­

¢1.~ Trailer turn signal assembly
Applies to vehicles: with towing hitch
The indicator light also blinks if the turn signal is
operated when towing a trailer .
The indicator light. blinks when the turn sig ­
nal is used, if a trailer has been properly connect­
ed to the vehicle .
If one of the turn signal bulbs on the trailer is
burned out or defective, the indicator light will
not blink when you use the turn signals.

Introduction
General notes
The driver information display inside the instru­
ment cluster provides you, the driver, with much
useful information .

Information from the driver information sys tem
is shown in the display in the center of the instru­
ment cluster .
When you turn on the ignition and while you a re
driving, some functions and vehicle components
are scanned for their operating status. Malfunc­
tions or required service procedures are signaled
aud ibly and shown by red and yellow lighted
symbo ls and reminders to the d river in the dis­
p lay.
The driver is also shown informat ion about rad io
and CD operat ion and direct ions for the naviga­
tion system* . You can find addit ional information
on these sub jects in t he radio or MMI* manual.
The illustrations in the instrument panel display
differ in some of the veh icles .

Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Auto-Check contro l monitors the funct io n of
certa in vehicle features and components. It sim ­
p ly makes sure these features and components
a re working properly . T he Auto-Check control
works as long as the ignition is on, as well as
wheneve r the ve hicle is driven .

If a component is ma lfunctioning or if the need
for an urgent repa ir has been detected, this will
a p pear in the ins trument cluste r display . You w ill
a lso hear an audib le wa rning tone . T he disp lays
a re color coded in e ithe r re d or yellow depe nding
o n their level of p rior ity .
A red symbol means

Note about automatic transmission
The Auto -Check Co ntrol w ill automatically pe r­
form a test each time you switch o n the ignition .
W it h the selector lever in P o r N, the fo llow ing
m essage appe ars in t he disp lay :
When stationary apply brake pedal while select­
ing gear
When you select a different gear (for example: R ,
D , etc.), the message w ill disappea r and the A u­
to -Check fu nction is d isplayed .
If th e re is a malfunct io n, then the malfunction
message will appear about 15 seconds afte r yo u
start the ve hicle. At the same time you w ill hear a
war ning tone.

II Is the key in the vehicle?
This reminder appears along with the
II symbol
if the master key is removed from the vehicle
with the engine running. It is intended to remind
you (e.g. when changing drivers) not to continue the journey without the master key .
If the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you
cannot switch off the ignition after stopping the
engine and you also cannot start the engine
again . You also cannot lock the vehicle from the
outside .

If the symbol illum inates, the light sensor has
failed. For safety reasons the low beams are
turned on permanently with the switch in
AUTO.
However, you can continue to turn the lights on
and off using the light switch. In the case of a de­
fect in the rain sensor, the windshield wiper lever
functions are still available. Have the light/rain
sensor checked as soon as possible by an author­ ized Audi dealer.

If the warning light illuminates, immediately
contact your authorized Audi dealer or qualified
workshop to have all brake pads inspected. On USA models the warning light

Im-If a front fog lamp has failed, the indicator
light turns on to indicate the location on the vehi-

of your passengers and others. We have summar­ ized here what you need to know about safety

this section - for your own safety as well as that
of your passengers.
The information i n this section applies to all
model versions of yo ur vehicle . Some of the fea­
tures descr ibed in t his sections may be s tanda rd
equipment on some models, or may be optional
equipment on others . If you are not sure, ask
your authorized Audi dealer.
A WARNING
- Always make sure that you follow the in­
structions and heed the WARNINGS in th is
Manual.
It is in your interest and in the in­
te rest of your passengers .
- Always keep the comp lete Owner's Litera­
ture in your A udi when you lend or sell your
vehicle so that this important information
will always be available to the d river and

- Always keep the Owner 's literature handy so
that you can find it easily if you have ques­

Safety equipment
The safety features are part of the occupant re­
straint system and work together to help reduce
the risk of injury in a wide variety of occident si t­
uations.
Your safety and the safety of your passenge rs
should not be left to chance. Advan ces i n tech­
nology have made a var iety of features avai lab le
to help reduce t he risk of injury in an accident .

gether as a system to help protect you and your
passengers in a wide range of acc idents. These
features cannot wo rk as a system if they are not

Important things to do before driving
Safety is everybody 's job! Vehicle and occupant
safety always depends on the informed and care ­
ful driver .
For your safety and the safety of your passen­
gers,
before driving always:
.,. Make sure that a ll lights and signals are operat ­
ing correctly .
.,. Make sure that the tire pressure is correct .
.,. Make sure that all windows are clean and afford
good vis ibility to the outs ide .
.,. Secure all luggage and othe r items ca refully

.,. Ma ke sure that noth ing ca n interfere wi th the
pedals.
.,. Adjust front seat, head rest raint and mirrors
correctly for yo ur height.

Driving safety
-Always put objects, for example, luggage or
other heavy items in the luggage compart­
ment.
- Always secure objects in the luggage com­
partment using the tie-down eyelets and
suitable straps.
A WARNING
Heavy loads will influence the way your vehi­
cle handles. To help reduce the risk of a loss
of control leading to serious personal injury:
- Always keep in mind when transporting
heavy objects, that a change in the center of
gravity can also cause changes in vehicle
handling:
- Always distribute the load as evenly as
possible.
- Place heavy objects as far forward in the
luggage compartment as possible.
- Never exceed the Gross Axle Weight Rating or the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating specified
on the safety compliance sticker on the left
door jamb. Exceeding permissible weight
standards can cause the vehicle to slide and handle differently .
- Please observe information on safe driving

A WARNING
To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from
being drawn into the vehicle, always keep the
rear lid closed while driving.
- Never transport objects larger than those fitting completely into the luggage area be­
cause the rear lid cannot be fully closed .
- If you absolutely must drive with the rear lid open, observe the following notes to reduce
the risk of poisoning:
- Close all windows,
- Close the Panoramic sliding sunroof*,
- Open all air outlets in the instrument pan-
el,
- Switch off the air recirculation,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest speed .

Always make sure that the doors, all win­
dows, the Panoramic sliding sunroof* and the
rear lid are securely closed and locked to re­
duce the risk of injury when the vehicle is not
being used .
-After closing the rear lid, always make sure
that it is properly closed and locked.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended espe­
cially with the rear lid left open. A child
could crawl into the vehicle through the lug­
gage compartment and close the rear lid be­
coming trapped and unable to get out. Be­
ing trapped in a vehicle can lead to serious
personal injury.
- Never let children play in or around the vehi­
cle.
- Never let passengers ride in the luggage
compartment. Vehicle occupants must al­
ways be properly restrained in one of the ve­
hicle's seating positions.
(D Tips
- Air circulation helps to reduce window fog­
ging. Stale air escapes to the outside
through vents in the trim panel. Be sure to keep these slots free and open .
- The tire pressure must correspond to the
load. The tire pressure is shown on the tire
pressure label. The tire pressure label is lo­
cated on the driver's side B-pillar . The tire
pressure label lists the recommended cold
tire inflation pressures for the vehicle at its
maximum capacity weight and the tires that
were on your vehicle at the time it was man­
ufactured. For recommended tire pressures
for normal load conditions, please see chap­
ter ¢
page 245.
Tie-downs
The luggage compartment is equipped with four
tie-downs to secure luggage and other items.

conditions and off-road
General information
The operation of the Electronic Stabilization Con­
trol (ESC) is expanded for operation away from paved roads. In situations where slip or a differ­
ential locking fun ction is required , the offroad
mode can be activated ¢
page 190. Your Audi al­
so has permanent all-wheel drive in addition .
However, your Audi is not a pure offroad vehicle.
It was not built for driving under extreme condi­
tions, e.g. for tr ips that are in the nature of an
expedition .
Drive only on roads and offroad sections which
match the design of your vehicle and your abili­
ties as a driver. Never take risks!
Before driving offroad
-Check the engine oi l level, tire pressure, coo l­
ant level, and the fluid level in the windshield
washer reservo ir.
- Stow luggage items and other objects in the
luggage compartment, and secure them
against sliding around.
After driving offroad
-After trips offroad, remove any twigs and other
foreign objects from the gri ll, the underbody
and the wheels. Pay special attention to foreign
objects (stones) which have become lodged in
the tire tread.
- Clean the body and the vehicle underside, and
inspect the vehicle for possible damage.
- Clean dirty windows, headlamp lenses, rear
lights, and license plates.
- Perform a brake check (particularly after travel­
ling through water).
A WARNING
-Drive especially attentively and plan ahead
in difficult road condit ions and when off­
road. Excessive speed or incorrect maneu­
vers can cause injuries and damage to the
vehicle .
Offroad driving
-Always adapt your speed and driving style to
road, offroad, traffic, and weather condi­
tions. Drive especially slowly offroad when
your view is restricted.
- Please be aware that in offroad mode, par­
ticularly on a smooth and slippery road, the
wheels may have an increased tendency to spin and the vehicle may break away - dan­
ger of skidd ing!
- Stability is lim ited in the offroad mode .

Avoid damage to the environment and re­
spect nature.

Only drive where it is permitted and stay on
marked roads and paths.
Explanation of some technical terms
The following data refer to ideal conditions. De­
pending on vehicle load and ground conditions
and the environment, the numbers may vary. It is
the driver's responsibility to decide whether ave­
hicle can overcome a specific s ituation

Gradient angle
The number of meters in altitude gained over a
distance of 109.4 yards or 100 meters (grade)
are given as a percentage or degrees. Informa­
t ion about the gradient the vehicle can cl imb un­
der its own power (depends in part on the road
s ur face and eng ine power). Maximum permitted
grade: 31

Ground clearance
The distance between the road surface and the
lowest point of the vehicle underbody. Ground
clearance 7.9 in (200 mm)

Exceeding the stated maximum figures can
result in severe injuries or vehicle damage.
- All the information was gathered on level,
firm and non-slippery road surfaces, and un-
der dry weather conditions.
