Emergency unlocking of the ignition key
In the event of malfunctions in the electrical sys ­
tem, it may happ en that you cannot remove the
ignition key.

If you are unable to remove the ignition key, for
example because the vehicle battery is dis­
charged, proceed as follows:

the mechanical key ® out of the master key .

.. Have the electrical system inspected by an au­
thorized Audi dealership.
Electronic immobilizer
The immobilizer helps to prevent unauthorized
use of your vehicle.
Inside the key there is a computer chip. This chip
automatically deact ivates the electronic immo­
bilizer when you insert the key in the ignition
lock. When you remove the key from the ignition
lock, the electronic immobilizer is automatically
activated once again.
(D Tips
- The vehicle cannot be started if an unau­
thorized key is used. The veh icle may not
start if another radio device such as a key
fo r anot her vehicle o r a transponder is lo­
cated on the key ring.

Central Locking
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors and the rear lid simultaneously.
You can lock and unlock the vehicle centrally. You
have the following choices:
- Remote master key
c::> page 40
- Doo r hand les w ith Convenience key*
c::> page 40,
- Lock cy linder a t the d river's door c::> page 41,
or
- Power locking switch inside
c::> page 42.
Select ive unlocking
When yo u lock the vehicle, the power locki ng sys­
tem will lock the doo rs and the rear lid. When
u nlocking, you ca n set in the radio or i n the
MM I*
whethe r only the driver's door or the ent ire vehi­
cl e should be u nlocked
c::> page 39.
Automatic locking
The automatic locking feature locks all the veh i­
cle doors and the rear lid when you drive faster
than 9 mp h (15 km/h).
The car is unlocked agai n once the ignition key is
removed . In addition, the ve hicle can be unlocked
i f the open ing funct ion in the power lock ing sys­
tem switch or at o ne of the door leve rs is act uat­
ed.
Additionally, in the event of a crash w ith airbag
deployment the doors a re automat ica lly un­
l ocked to allow access to the vehicle.
Anti-theft alarm warning system
If the anti-theft alarm warning system detects a
break-in into the veh icle, aco ustic and vis ual
warning signals are triggered.
The anti-theft warning system is activated auto­
matically when you lock the vehicle. It is deacti­
vated when unlock ing us ing the remote k ey , with
the
me chan ical key , and when yo u sw itch on the
i gnition.
The alarm also turns off when the alarm cycle has
expi red . .,..

to deactivate the pan ic function .
If the veh icle is unlocked and no door, the rear lid
or the hood is opened with in 60 seconds, the ve­
h icle locks itself aga in automatically. This feature
prevents the veh icle from being accidentally left
un locked over a long period of time.
It depends on the settings in the rad io or in the
MMI* whether the entire vehicle is unlocked or
only ce rtain doo rs

On veh icles w ith Conven ience key*, the selector
lever must be in the P position, otherw ise the ve­
h icle cannot be locked .
A WARNING
Read and follow all WARNINGS ¢ A in Gener­
al description on page 39.

@ Tips
- In order to make sure the locking function is
working, you should a lways keep your eye
on the vehicle to make sure it is properly
locked.
- Do not use the remote control if you are in­ side the car, otherwise you may uninten­
tionally lock the vehicle, and then you would
set off the anti-theft alarm when you try to
sta rt the eng ine or open a door. In case this
happens anyhow, push the un lock button@.
- Use the pan ic function on ly if you are in an
eme rgency situat io n.
Locking and unlocking with Convenience
key

The doors and the rear lid can be unlocked and
locked without operating the master key.

Unlocking vehicle
• Take hold of the door hand le . The door is un -
locked automatically.
• Pull the handle to open the door .
Lo ck ing v ehicle
• Move the se lector lever to the P pos ition (au to ­
matic transmission), otherwise the vehicle can­
not be locked.

Do not reach inside the door han­
dle .
The vehicle can be locked and unlocked at any
door. It depends on the sett ings in the radio or in
the MMI* whether the entire vehicle is unlocked

lide with any obstacles. This can damage to

The left or right orientation lines and surfaces

Adjusting the display
and warning tones
Applies to vehicles: with Audi parking system plus with rear­
view camera
The display and warning tones can be adjusted in
the MMI.

Di sp lay

when the parking system is switched on,
only aud ible signals are g iven.
- On -when the parking system is switched on,
either the visual disp lay or the picture from the
rearview camera is displayed.
Warning tones

when the parking system is
switched on, the volume of the active audio
source is lowered .
The new ly adjusted value is briefly heard from
the signal generator .
- The warning tones can also be ad justed d i­
rectly by the vis ual disp lay or the picture
from the rearview camera. Simply press the
Sett ings control button.
- Changed settings are activated when park­
ing system is switched on again.
Par king system
- The settings are automatically stored and
assigned to the remote control key .
Trailer hitch
Applies to vehicles: with Audi parking system plus with rear­
view camera and trailer hitch
Fo r vehicles with a factory installed trailer hitch,
o r a tra ile r hi tch installed according to factory
specifications, the par king system rear sensors
do not come on whenever you shift into reverse
gear or when you press the
P •1~ switch . Remem­
ber, there is no war ning for distances to the rear .
The front sensors remain activated. The visual
display switches to the tra iler tow ing mode. The
picture from the rearview camera w ill not show
the or ientat io n lines nor the blue surfaces .
If you insta ll a hitch yourse lf, this f unct ion may
not work.
Error messages
Applies to vehicles: with Audi parking system plus with rear­
view camera
T he re is an error in the system if the LE D on the
Pw~ switch is blink ing and yo u hear a continuous
alarm for a few seconds after sw itch ing on the
park ing system or when the parking system is al­
ready activated. Have your authorized Audi dealer
correct the error.
(D Tips
If the error is not corrected before you switch
off the ign ition, when you switch on the park­
i ng system again, the LED in the
Pw.A sw itch
will blink.

The fl uid level may drop slightly after some time
due to the automatic adjustment of the brake
pads . This is not cause for alarm.
I f the b rake fl uid level fa lls
considerably be low
the "MIN" mark, the brake wa rning/ind icator

continue to operate the vehicle. The complete brake system should be thoroughly checked by an
author ized Audi dealer or qualified workshop and
the cause corrected . If the brake fluid level is too
low, the brake warning/ind icator light will illumi­
nate. Contact an authorized Audi dealer
immedi ­
a te ly.
Changing brake fluid
Have the brake fluid changed by an experienced technician.
Brake fluid absorbs mo isture from the air. If the
water conte nt in the brake fluid is too h igh, cor­
ros ion in the brake system may resu lt after ape­
riod of time. The boiling poi nt of the brake flu id
will also dec rease cons iderably and decrease
braking pe rformance.
Therefore, the b rake fluid must be changed
e ve ry
two year s.
Always use new b rake fluid wh ich con­
forms to Fede ral Motor Veh icle St andard "FMVSS
116 DOT 4".
The brake fluid reservoir can be diff icult to reach,
therefore, we re commend that yo u have the
b rake fl uid changed by yo ur autho rized
Audi
deal er.
Your dealer has the cor rect too ls, the
right brake fluid and the know -how to do this for
you.
A WARNING
- Brake fluid is poisonous. It must be stored
only in the closed original container out of
the reach of chi ldren!
- B rake failure can resu lt from old or inappro­
pr iate brake flu id. Observe these precau­
t io ns:
Ch eck ing and Filling
-Use only brake fluid that meets SAE speci­
ficat ion
J 1703 and conforms to Federal
Motor Vehicle Standard 116. Always check
with your authorized Aud i dealer to make
sure you are us ing the correct brake fluid .
The co rrect type of brake flu id is also i ndi­
cated on the b rake fluid reservoir.
- The brake flu id must be new. Heavy use of
the b rakes can cause a vapo r lock if the
bra ke fluid is left in the system too long.
T his can se riously affe ct the efficiency of
t h e b rakes as we ll as you r safety . This
could resu lt in an accident.

B rake flu id will damage the paint of your ve h i­
cle.
@) For the sake of the environment
Because of the p roblem of proper d isposa l of
brake fluid as well as the spec ial too ls re­
q uire d and the necessary expertise, we rec­
ommend that yo u have the bra ke fluid
c hanged by yo ur authorize d Au di dealer.
Battery
General information
Under normal ope rat ing condit ions, the batte ry
in you r A udi does not need any mainte nance.
Wi th
high o utside temperatures or long daily
drives we recommend that yo u have the elec tro ­
lyte level checked by an authorized A udi dealer or
qualified workshop . The electro lyte level should
also be checked each time the battery is charged
~ page 231.
Have the batte ry checked when you take your ve­
hicle in for service. You are we ll advised to re­
place a battery that is older than S years.
Wi th certain types of airbag deployment, the
battery is d isconnected from the veh icle electri ­
ca l system for safety reasons¢.&.

-Do not interchange the positive a nd nega­
tive cables.
- When working on the battery, be sure not to
short-circuit the terminals with tools or oth­
er metal objects. This would cause the bat­
tery to heat up very quickly, which could
lead to damage or explosion and personal
injury.
- When a battery is charged, it produces hy­
drogen gas which is explosive and could
cause personal injury.
- Always keep the battery well out of the reach of children.
- Before work is done on the electrical sys­
tem, disconnect the negative ground cable.
- Before performing any work on the electri­
cal system, switch off the engine and igni­
tion as well as any electrical equipment. The
negative cable on the battery must be dis­
connected. If you are just going to replace a
light b ulb, then it is enough to sw itch off
the lights.
- Before disconnecting the battery, switch off
the ant i-theft alarm system! Otherw ise you
will set off the a larm.
- When disconnecting the batte ry, first dis­
connect the negative cable and then the
positive cab le.
- Before reconnecting the battery, make sure
all e lectrical consumers are switched off .
Reconnect the posit ive cable first and then
the negative cable . Never interchange the
cables -this could start a fire!
- Never charge a frozen or a thawed-out bat­
tery. It could exp lode! If a battery has fro­
zen, then it must be replaced. A discharged
battery can freeze over at 32°F (0°C).
- Make sure the vent hose is a lways attached
to the opening on the side of the battery.
- Never use batteries which are damaged.
There is the danger of an explosion! Always replace a damaged battery.

- Do not disconnect the vehicle battery when
the ignition is sw itched on or when the en­
gine is running, otherwise, you will damage
electronic components in the electrical sys­
tem .
- If your vehicle is going to stand for a long
period of time w ithout being driven, protect
the battery from "freezing", otherwise it
w ill be damaged and will then have to be re­
placed .
Battery charging
Starting the engine requires a well charged bat­
tery .
