This manual contains important information,
tips, suggestions and warnings for using your ve­ h icle.
Keep th is manual in your veh icle at all times. Th is
is especially important if you loan your vehicle to
others or sell it.
This owner's manua l describes the
equipment
range
specified for this mode l at the tim e of
printing. Individua l equipment options described
may only be available at a later date or may only
be offered in certain countries.
Some sect ions in this manua l do not apply to all
vehicles. When this is the case, the beginning of
the section indicates the
validity, for example

T he illum ina tion fo r the instr ument clus ter
lights up whenever yo u sw itch on the ig nit io n
w it h t he
vehicle headlight s off. As the day ­
light fades, the instr ument clus ter ill umi na ­
tion likew ise dims a utomatica lly and will go
out comp lete ly when the outs ide light is very
low. This feature is meant to remind you to
sw itch on the head lights when outside light
condi tions become poor .

Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coolant gauge ¢ page 10, fig. 3 CD
on ly works when t he ignition is on. To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the follow­
ing important points :
Engine cold
If the needle is at or close to the bottom o f the
gauge, the engine has not yet reached its operat­
i ng temperature. Avo id high engine speeds,
heavy engine loads, and heavy thrott le applica­
tions .
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operating tem­
perature, the needle will move to the middle of
the ga uge and rema in there. I f the engine is
working hard at hig h outs ide temperatures, t he
needle may move higher on the gauge. This is not
a cause for concern as long as the. warning
li ght i n the inst ru m en t cluste r display does not il-
l u m inat e. .,,.

Warning light in th e instrument clus ter
di splay
If the . warning light in the instrument cluster
display flashes , this can mean one of two th ings:
either the coolant
t emperature is too high, or the
coolan t
level is too low 9 page 29.
If the needle is well in the upper area of the
gauge, the coo lant temperature is too high.

If the warning light comes on again after
driving a short distance , contact an authorized
Aud i dealer or other q ualified workshop .

before opening the hood and chec king the
engine coolan t level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see o r
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartmen t. You
cou ld burn yourself . Let the engine cool off
first so that you cannot hear o r see any
steam or engine coo lant.
CD Note
- M ount ing additional lights or accesso ries in
front of the air inlets red uces the cooling ef ­
fect of the radiator . At high outside temper ­
atures or high engine load, the eng ine could
overheat .
- The front spoiler has been designed to prop­
erly distribute the cooling air when the veh i­
cle is moving . If the spoiler is damaged, this
could reduce the cooling effect and the en­
gine could then overheat. Ask your author ­
i zed Audi dealer for assistance .
Tachometer (engine rev counter )
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM (revo ­
lutions per minutes) .
If engine RPM drops below 1,500 , you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area at
~ the end of the scale indicates max imum perm is -co
~ sible eng ine RPM after the break- in period . Be-

Starting the Auto-Check sequence
T he Auto-Chec k system ~ page 2 7 constantly
monitors ce rtain ind iv idual f unct ions and compo­
nents of the vehicle when the ignition is turned
on and when the vehicle is moving .
With the ignition turned on, you can start the "Auto-Check seq uence" by pressing the
!S ET ! bu t­
ton. You can perform an Auto-Check sequence
when the vehicle is stationary and the ign ition is
turned on or when the vehicle is moving slower
than 3 mph (5 km/h). ..,.

The numbe r of keys programmed to the vehicle is
also displayed. The disp lay
L2 3 /3 indicates that
three keys have been programmed. This allows
you to make sure you have received all of the keys
when you purchase a used veh icle.
F or examp le, if you on ly receive two keys, you
should ta ke those keys to your authorized Audi
dealer to have the missing key deactivated so it
cannot be used. You sh ould also report the miss­
i n g key to your insurance company .
Calling up the driver info rmation
A yellow or red symbol appears in the inst rument
cluster display, usua lly with a driver message .
The driver message display disappears after about 5 seconds. The dr iver message can be dis­
p layed aga in by briefly pressing the
IS ET I button .
Setting the speed warning
By press ing the I SETI b utton briefly , you can set
threshold 1 of the speed warning whi le you are
driving

the
! SE TI button, you de lete the warning thresh­
old.

Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only when the igniti on is
o n.
When the needle reaches t he rese rve mark, the
c::;, page 33 Ji] symbol appears in the instru ­
ment cluster disp lay as well as the message
Please refuel. This message is meant to rem ind
yo u to
refuel.
The tota l tank capacity of your ve hicle is listed in
c::;, page 2 78.
(D Note
N eve r run the ta nk comp letely dry! A n irregu­
l a r supply of fuel can cause eng ine misfir ing
and fuel could enter into the ex haust system.
The cata lytic converter could then overheat
and be damaged .

A WARNING
- Failure to heed warning lights and other im­
portant vehicle information may result in
serious personal injury or vehicle damage.
- Whenever stalled or stopped for repair,
move the vehicle a safe distance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on the emer­
gency flasher

- The engine compartment of any motor vehi­
cle is a potentially hazardous area. Before
you check anything in the engine compart­
ment, stop the engine and let it cool down.

faults will be identified either with a red sym­
bol (priority 1 - Danger!) or with a yellow
symbol (priority 2 -Warning).
EPC Electronic power control
App lies to vehicles: with gaso line engine
This warning/indicator light monitors the elec­
tronic power control .
The Ga warning/indicator light (Electronic Power
Control) illuminates when you turn on the igni­
tion as a function check.
@ Tips
If this warning/indicator light illuminates
while you are driving, then there is a malfunc-

tion in the engine electronics. Have the mal­
function corrected as soon as possible by your
authorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop.
W Glow plug system
Applies to vehicles: wit h diese l eng ine
The control light illuminates when the glow plug
system is active.
If the II indicator light illuminates, the glow
plug system is active. You should start the engine
immediately after the indicator light switches off.
The indicator light only illuminates for approxi­ mately 1 second if the engine is warm or if the
outside temperature is above 46 QF (8 Q().
(D Tips
-If the glow plug indicator light illuminates
while driving, there is an engine control
malfunction. The engine should be checked
immediately.
- If the indicator light does not illuminate at
all when switching the ignition on, there
may be a malfunction in the glow plug sys­
tem. The engine should be checked.
;;.ll/4 Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC)
If the Bl indicator light blinks while driving, the
ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) is actively regu­
lating.
If the
Bl indicator light turns on, the system has
switched the ESC off. In this case, you can switch
the ignition off and then on to switch the ESC on
again. The indicator light turns off when the sys­
tem is functioning fully.
If the. indicator light turns on, ESC was re­
stricted using the
!.P-O FF I button c> page 191.
Stabilization control (ESC/ABS): Fault! See

If the Bl indicator light and the ABS indicator
light
LtB (USA models) 1iJ (Canada models)
turn on and the message appears, the ABS or
electronic differential lock is malfunctioning . This
also causes the ESC to malfunction. The brakes ..,.

still fu nction with their normal power, but A BS is
not active .

A WARNING
If the .. (USA models) . (Canada mod­
els) brake system indicator light turns on to­
gether with the ABS and ESC indicator lights ,
the ABS/ESC regulating function may have
failed . Functions that stabilize the vehicle are
no longer available . Th is could cause the vehi­
cle to swerve and increase the risk of sliding .
Dr ive caref ully to the nearest autho rized Aud i
de aler or o ther qualified wor kshop and have
t he malfunction corrected .

CJ};/ !f Safety systems

The II (USA models) a (Cana da models) indi ­
cator light monito rs the safety systems (e .g . air ­
bags, pretensione rs) and illuminates for a few
seconds each time you switch t he ignition on.
If t h e II (U SA mode ls) a (Canad a models) in­
d icator light does not go out, or if it i llum inates
while you are driving, or if it starts to blink, then
there is a malfunction somewhe re in the system.
I f the light does not ill uminate when you switch
the igni tion on, this also means there is a mal­
function .

If you have a mal func tion in the safety sys­
t ems, contact your authorized A udi dealer im­
media tely. Othe rwise the safety system s may
no t w or k properly in an a cci den t.

ill Tire pressure monitoring system -
telltale indicator lamp
Applies to vehicles: with tire pressure monitoring system
The warning/indicator light appears in the event
of a signifi cant loss of tire pressure or if there is
a malfunction.
The ind icator light RI] illumi nates to check the
func tion when yo u sw itch on t he ign it io n.
If the
RI] symbo l rema ins on or blinks after you
switch on the ignition, the re is a loss of tire pres­
su re or a system ma lfunction .
If there is a system
malfunction, see your author ized Audi dealer as
soon as possib le.

¢¢Turn signals
The indicator light blinks when you use either
turn signal .
Whenever you use the left B or the right R
turn s ignal, the indicator light blinks . When you
use the eme rgency flashers, bot h in d icator lights
flash .
If one of the turn signa l ligh t bulbs burn out, the
turn s ignal will b link twice as fast as normal.
This does not apply, however, in towing mode.
The ind icator light does not flash if a turn signa l
i s out on the tra iler or the towing veh icle. Add i­

¢1.~ Trailer turn signal assembly
Applies to vehicles: with towing hitch
The indicator light also blinks if the turn signal is
operated when towing a trailer .
The indicator light . blinks when the t urn s ig ­
nal is used, if a trai ler has been properly co nnect­
ed to the ve hicle .
If one of the tu rn signa l bulbs on the t railer is
burned out or defective, the ind icator light will
not blink when you use the turn signa ls.
