Driver information system
On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ¢• in the
instrument cluster
c:::> page 14, fig. 8 is part of the
On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
The warning/indicator light i lluminates when the
ignition is switched on and goes out after the en­
gine starts and the idle has stabilized. This indi­
cates that the MIL is working properly.
If the light does not go out after the engine is
started, or illuminates while you are driving, a
malfunction may exist in the engine system. If
the light illuminates, the catalytic converter
could be damaged.
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoiding
sustained high speeds and/or rapid acce lerations)
and have the condition corrected. Contact your
authorized Audi dealer.
I f the light illuminates, the electronic speed lim­
iter may also be malfunctioning. For more infor­
mation
c::> page 26, Electronic speed limiter.
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate (only vehicles
with gasoline engine)

On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the components
of yo ur emission control system. Each monitored
component in your engine system has been as­
signed a code . In case of a malfunction, the com­
ponent will be identified and the fault stored as a
code in the control module memory.

The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a
l eak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery system.
If the light illuminates after a refueling, stop the
vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is prop­
erly closed (only vehicles with gasoline engine)
c::> page 216.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor ­
ed data can only be displayed using specia l diag­
nostic equipment (generic scan tool for OBD).
In order to connect the specia l diagnostic equip­
ment, push the plug into the Data Link Connector
(DLC) . The DLC is located to the right of the hood
release
c::> fig. 21.
Your authorized Audi dealer or qualified work­ shop can interpret the code and perform the nec­
essary repair .
A WARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for per­
sonal use. Incorrect usage can cause malfunc­
tions, which can increase the r isk of a coll i­
sion!
Electronic speed limiter
Your vehicle may be factory equ ipped with tires
that are rated for a maximum speed of 130 mph
(210 km/h) . Th is is less than the max imum speed
of your veh icle. To reduce the risk of sudden tire
failure and loss of control if the vehicle is ope rat­
ed at excessive speeds, your vehicle also has an
electronic speed limiter . The electronic speed
limiter prevents your vehicle from going faster
than the tire speed rating. For more information
c::> page 242.
If the engine contro l unit receives faulty vehicle
road speed signals, the Malfunction Indicator
Lamp (MIL) ¢•will illuminate. If this occurs,
contact the nearest authorized Audi dealer for as­
sistance.

Your vehicle's top speed is electronically limited
to 155 mph (250 km/h).

poss ible that the trac tion control or the eme r­
gency brake has malfunctioned. It is possible
that the parking brake cannot be applied.
It is
also possible that the parking brake cannot be
released after it has been applied. Drive to an
authorized Aud i dealer or other qualified work­
shop to have the malfunction corrected.
If the ABS system malfunctions, the ABS warn­ ing/indicator light illuminates together with the

- Driv ing with low b rake fluid is a safety haz­
ard. Stop the car and get p rofess ional assis­
tance.
- If the
111111 (USA models)/ . (Canada mod­
els) brake system indi cator lig ht t urns on to­
ge ther with the ABS an d ESC i ndica to r
lights, the ABS/ ESC regu lating function may
have failed. Functions that stab ilize the ve ­
hicle a re no longer avai lab le . This could

cause the vehicle to swerve and increase the
risk of s liding. Drive carefully to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or other qualif ied
workshop and have the malfunct ion correct­
ed.
- L Engine cooling system malfunction
A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible.
If the . symbo l flashes in the disp lay, either the
engine coo lant
temperature is too high or the en­
gine coolant
level is too low . A driver message
appears as we ll to explain the malfunct ion in
more detail. The d river warn ing goes out after
about 5 seconds, but it can be brought up at any
t ime by press ing the
ISET I button again.

gine and turn on the hazard warning lights
o page 54, Emergency flashers.
- Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coo lant escaping from the eng ine
compartment -you risk being scalded. Wait
until you can no longer see or hear steam or
coo lant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any vehicle is a
dangerous area. Before you perform any
work in the eng ine compartment, turn of
the engine and a llow it to cool. Fo llow the
~
warn ing stickers o page 221. ~

justed.
Because airbags inflate in the blink of an eye w ith
great force, things you have on yo ur lap o r have
p laced on the seat cou ld become dangerous p ro­
jectiles, and be pushed into yo u if the airbag in­
flates.
When an a irbag deploys, fine dust is released.
This is normal and is not caused by a fire in the
vehicle. This dust is made up mostly of a powder
used to lubricate the airbags as they dep loy. It
could irr itate skin.
It is important to remember that whi le the sup ­
p lemental airbag system is designed to reduce
the likelihood of serious in juries, other injur ies,
for example swell ing, bruising and minor abra­
sions, can also happen when a irbags inf late. Air­
bags do not protect the arms or the lower parts
of the body. Front airbags o nly supplement the
three point safety belts in some frontal col lisions
i n which the veh icle deceleration is high enough
to deploy the airbags.
F ront airbags will not deploy:
- if the ign it io n is switched off when a crash oc -
curs,
- in s ide collisions,
- in rear-end collisions,
- in ro llovers,
- when the crash deceleration measured by the airbag system is less than the minimum thresh ­
o ld needed for airbag deployment as registered
by the electronic control un it.
Th e front pa ssenger airbag will al so not
depl oy:
-when the front passenger seat is not occupied,
- when the weight on the front passenger seat as
sensed by the Advanced Airbag System indi­
cates that the front airbag on the passenger
s ide has to be turned off by the electronic con­
trol unit (the
PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
comes on and stays on) .
A WARNING
Sitting in the wrong position can increase the
risk of se rious injury in crashes .
Airbag syste m
- To reduce the risk of injury when the airbags
inflate, the driver and passengers must al­
ways sit in an upright pos ition, must not
lean aga inst or place any part of the ir body
too close to the area where the a irbags are
located.
- Occupants who are unbelted, out of position
or too close to the airbag can be seriously
in ju red by an a irbag as it unfo lds with great
for ce in the blink ofan eye

A WARNING
A child in a rearward-fac ing ch ild safety sea t
i nsta lled on the front passenger seat w ill be
se riously inju red and can be killed if the front
a irbag inflates - even with an Advanced Airbag
System .
- The inflating airbag will hit the child safety
seat o r infant carrier with great force and
will smash the child safety seat and child
aga inst the backrest, center armrest, door
or roof.
- Always install rear-fac ing ch ild safety seats
on the rear seat.
- If you must install a rearwa rd fac ing child
safety seat on the front passenger seat be­
cause of except ional circumstances and the
PASS ENG ER AIR BAG OFF light does not
come on and stay on, immediately install
the rear-facing child safety seat in a rear
seating posi tion and have the airbag system
inspected by your authori zed Audi dealer .
A WARNING
Objects between you and the airbag will in­
crease the risk of injury in a crash by interfe r­
ing with the way the airbag unfolds or by be ­
ing p ushed into you as the airbag inflates .
- Never hold things in yo ur hands or on your
lap when the vehicle is in use .
- Never transpo rt items on or in the a rea of
the front passenger seat. Objects could move into the area of the front airbags dur­
ing brak ing or other sudden maneuver and
become dangerous project iles that can
cause serious persona l injury if the a irbags
inflate.

-To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam or
coolant escaping from the eng ine compart­
ment. Wait until no steam or coolant can be
seen or heard before carefully opening the hood.
Closing the engine hood
"' Pull the hood down until the pressu re from the
struts is reduced.
"' Le t the hood
drop down and latch in p lace. Do
not try to push it shut;
it may fa il to engage

A hood that is not completely latched cou ld
fly up and block your view while driv ing.

- When you close the engine hood, check it to
make sure the safety catch has properly en­
gaged . The hood should be flush with the
surrounding vehicle body parts .
- If you notice while driv ing that the hood is
not secured properly, stop at once and close
it .
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the
engine compartment.
