WARNING:
Clean dust on brake calipers and brake pads with a vacuum dust collector to minimize the hazard of
airborne particles or other materials.
CAUTION:
• While removing brake caliper, do not depr ess brake pedal because piston will pop out.
• It is not necessary to remove bolts from torque member and brake hose except for disassembly or
replacement of brake caliper assembly. In this case, hang brake caliper with a wire so as not to
stretch brake hose.
• Do not damage piston boot.
• Keep brake rotor and brake pads free from brake fluid and grease.
• Burnish the brake pads and disc brake rotor mutual ly contacting surfaces after refinishing or replac-
ing disc brake rotors, after replacing brake pads, or if a soft pedal occurs at very low mileage. Refer
to BR-16, "Brake Burnishing"
.
REMOVAL
1. Partially drain brake fluid from the master cylinder. Refer to BR-14, "Drain and Refill".
2. Remove the front wheel and tire using power tool. Refer to WT-55, "Adjustment"

REMOVAL
1. Partially drain brake fluid from the master cylinder. Refer to BR-14, "Drain and Refill".
2. Remove rear wheel and tire using power tool. Refer to WT-55, "Adjustment"
.
3. Remove the upper and lower sliding pin bolts. Refer to BR-39,
"BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY : Exploded View".
NOTE:
Note the sliding pin orientation during removal. The upper sliding
pin contains a bushing.
4. Remove brake caliper from torque member. Leavi ng brake hose attached, reposition the brake caliper
aside with wire.

BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY : Removal and Installation

WARNING:
Clean dust on brake calipers and brake pads with a vacuum dust collector to minimize the hazard of

CAUTION:
• While removing brake caliper, do not depr ess brake pedal because the piston will pop out.
• Do not damage piston boot.
• Keep disc brake rotor free from brake fluid.
• Refill the brake reservoir with new brake fluid “DOT 3”.
• Do not reuse drained brake fluid.
NOTE:
When removing components such as hoses, tubes/lines, etc. , cap or plug openings to prevent fluid from spill-
ing.
REMOVAL
1. Remove rear wheel and tire using power tool. Refer to WT-55, "Adjustment".
2. Remove reservoir cap.
3. Partially drain brake fluid from the master cylinder. Refer to BR-14, "Drain and Refill"
.
4. Remove union bolt (A) and then remove brake hose from brake caliper. Discard the copper sealing wash- ers.
CAUTION:
Do not reuse copp er sealing washers.
5. Remove the upper and lower sliding pin bolts. NOTE:
Note the sliding pin orientation during removal. The upper sliding
pin contains a bushing.
6. Remove the brake caliper from the torque member.
7. Remove the brake pads and shims from the torque member.
8. Remove the torque member bolts and the torque member.

inspection of the power generation voltage variable c ontrol system operation after replacing the generator.

REMOVAL
NOTE:
When removing components such as hoses, tubes/lines, etc. , cap or plug openings to prevent fluid from spill-
ing.
1. Disconnect the battery negative and positive terminals. Refer to PG-73, "Removal and Installation (Bat-
tery)".
2. Partially drain engine coolant. Refer to CO-36, "Changing Engine Coolant"
.
3. Remove front wheel and tire assembly (RH). Refer to WT-55, "Adjustment"
.
4. Remove fender protector side cover (RH). Refer to EXT-26, "FENDER PROTECTOR : Removal and
Installation".
5. Remove cooling fan assembly and shroud. Refer to CO-42, "Removal and Installation"
.
6. Release clip and reposition power steering tube.
7. Remove the A/C compressor. Refer to HA-30, "COMPRESSOR : Removal and Installation"
.
8. Disconnect oil pressure switch.
9. Disconnect the harness connectors from the generator.
10. Remove the generator bracket.
11. Remove the generator bolts and nut using power tools.
12. Slide the generator out and remove.
INSTALLATION
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.

4. Remove cowl top extension. Refer to
EXT-24, "Removal and Installation".
5. Remove the front road wheel and tire (RH). Refer to WT-55, "Adjustment"
.
6. Remove the fender protector (RH). Refer to EXT-26, "FENDER PROTECTOR : Removal and Installation"
.
7. Drain coolant from the radiator. Refer to CO-36, "Changing Engine Coolant"
.
CAUTION:
Perform when the engine is cold.
8. Disconnect coolant reservoir hose and remove coolant reservoir tank. Refer to CO-40, "Exploded View"
.
9. Drain the power steering fluid reservoir. Refer to ST-30, "Draining and Refilling"
.
10. Remove the power steering oil pump. Refer to ST-38, "Removal and Installation"
.
11. Support engine and remove the RH engine insulator and bracket. Refer to EM-220, "Exploded View"
.
12. Set No. 1 cylinder at TDC on its compression stroke. • Align pointer with TDC mark on crankshaft pulley.
13. Remove drive belt. Refer to EM-134, "Removal and Installation"
.
14. Remove the drive belt auto-tensioner assembly. Refer to EM-135, "Removal and Installation of Drive Belt
Auto-tensioner".
15. Remove water drain plug (A) and copper sealing washer (B) to drain coolant from engine.
CAUTION:
Do not reuse copper sealing washers.
16. Disconnect RH valve timing control connectors and remo ve valve timing control cover (bank 1). Refer to
EM-182, "Exploded View"
.
17. Remove water pump cover. Refer to CO-44, "Exploded View"
.
18. Remove the timing chain tensioner (primary) as follows:
a. Pull the lever (C) down to release the plunger stopper tab (B).
b. Insert the stopper pin A into the tensioner body hole to hold the lever (C) and keep the plunger stopper tab (B) released.
NOTE:
An allen wrench [(1.2 mm (0.047 in)] is used for a stopper pin A
as an example.
c. Compress the plunger (D) into the tensioner body (1) by press- ing the slack guide (2).
d. Keep the slack guide (2) pressed and lock the plunger (D) in by pushing the stopper pin A through the lever (C) and into the
chain tensioner body hole.
e. Remove timing chain tensioner bolts and then remove the timing chain tensioner. CAUTION:
Be careful not to drop timing chain te nsioner bolts inside timing chain case.
19. Remove the three water pump bolts (A). Make a gap between water pump sprocket (1) and timing chain, by carefully turning
crankshaft pulley (2) counterclockwise until timing chain loosens
on water pump sprocket (1).

Removal and Installation

WARNING:
• Place chocks at the front and back of the rear wheels.
• For engines not equipped with slin gers, attach proper slingers and bolts as described in the Parts
Catalog.
CAUTION:
• Do not start working until the exh aust system and coolant are cool.
• If items or work required are not covered by the en gine main body section, follow the applicable pro-
cedures.
• Use the correct supporting points for lifting and jacking. Refer to GI-33, "Garage Jack and Safety
Stand".
• In removing the drive shaft, be careful not to damage the grease seals on the transaxle.
NOTE:
When removing components such as hoses, tubes/lines, etc. , cap or plug openings to prevent fluid from spill-
ing.
REMOVAL
1. Remove engine cover using power tool. Refer to EM-28, "Removal and Installation".
2. Release fuel pressure. Refer to EC-182, "Work Procedure"
.
3. Disconnect the negative and positive battery terminal. Refer to PG-73, "Removal and Installation (Bat-
tery)".
4. Disconnect the fuel rail at the fuel hose quick connector (engine side). Refer to EM-41, "Removal and
Installation".
5. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to CO-12, "Changing Engine Coolant"
.
6. Remove the engine under cover. Refer to EXT-28, "Removal and Installation"
.
7. Remove hood assembly. Refer to DLK-170, "HOOD ASSEMBLY : Removal and Installation"
.
8. Remove core support cover.
9. Remove the front air duct and air cleaner case assembly. Refer to EM-29, "Removal and Installation"
.
10. Remove battery and battery tray. Refer to PG-74, "Removal and Installation (Battery Tray)"
.
11. Remove cowl top. Refer to EXT-24, "Removal and Installation"
.
12. Remove strut brace. Refer to FSU-19, "Exploded View"
.
13. Disconnect EVAP hose and vacuum hose from intake manifold.
14. Remove upper and lower radiator hoses (engine side).
15. Remove CVT cooler lines.
16. Disconnect engine room harness connecto r at the CVT and ECM connectors.
CAUTION:
Protect the harness connector with plastic bags or suitable covering to help prevent damage and
intrusion of foreign mate rials into the connectors.
17. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose.
18. Disconnect the heater hoses.
19. Remove the front wheels and tires using a power tool. Refer to WT-55, "Adjustment"
.
20. Remove the fender protector side covers (RH) and (LH). Refer to EXT-26, "FENDER PROTECTOR :
Removal and Installation".
21. Remove tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to ST-36, "Removal and Installation"
.
22. Remove the power steering gear bolts and support the power steering gear. Refer to ST-36, "Exploded
View".
23. Remove rear cover plate.
24. Remove the torque converter nuts.
25. Remove the rear engine mount torque rod.
26. Remove front exhaust tube and gaskets. Refer to EX-5, "Exploded View"
