Your vehicle is equipped with an electroni- cally controlled fuel injection system. This isa system that automatically controls fuel injection. There is no need to depress the accelerator pedal when starting the engine.The starter motor should not be run for more than 15 seconds at a time. To prevent battery drain, wait a few secondsbetween attempts to restart the engine.
1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened. 2. Make sure the parking brake is applied. 3. Press and hold the brake pedal down withyour right foot. 4. Press and hold the clutch pedal all the way down (manual transaxle).
5. On vehicles equipped with manual trans- axle, place the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position. On vehicles equipped with continuouslyvariable transmission (CVT) or Twin Clutch SST, make sure the selector lever (CVT) or the gearshift lever (Twin ClutchSST) is in the “P” (PARK) position. 6. While pushing the ignition switch from “LOCK” (PUSH OFF) to “LOCK” (PUSH ON), set the ignition switch to the “ON” position and confirm that all warn-ing lights and warning displays are oper- ating properly.
WA R N I N G Never run the engine in a closed or poorly ventilated area any longer than is needed to move your vehicle out of the area. Car- bon monoxide gas, which is odorless and extremely poisonous, could build up andcause serious injury or death.CAUTION Do not push-start the vehicle.Do not run the engine at high rpms or drive at high speeds until the engine has had a chance to warm up. Release the ignition switch as soon as the engine starts. Otherwise, the starter motorwill be damaged.
Starting the engine

NOTE
 For models equipped with a manual trans- axle, the starter will not operate unless theclutch pedal is fully depressed (Clutch inter- lock). This is a safety feature.
NOTE
 On vehicles equipped with CVT, the starter will not operate unless the selector lever is inthe “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) posi- tion. On vehicles equipped with Twin Clutch SST,the starter will not operate unless the gear- shift lever is in the “P” (PARK) position or the gearshift lever is in the “N” (NEUTRAL)position with the brake pedal depressed. For safety reasons, start the engine in the “P” (PARK) position so that the wheels arelocked.

To prevent vehicle theft, only the emergencykey with the pre-registered F.A.S.T.-keyinserted can start the engine. (Electronic immobilizer function)
The engine is off and the steering wheel is locked. The emergency key can be inserted and removed only when the ignition switch is in this position. The electrical accessories can be used with the engine off. The engine will start only by using the emer- gency key with the F.A.S.T.-key inserted. It is possible to use all electrical accessories with only the emergency key. Engages the starter. Release the emergency key when the engine starts. The ignition switch returns automatically to the “ON” position.
NOTE
 Only use the emergency key in an emer- gency. When the battery of the F.A.S.T.-key has run down, replace the battery as soon as possible and use it as a F.A.S.T.-key again.  After using the emergency key, be sure to reinsert it into the F.A.S.T.-key.

1. Remove the emergency key from the F. A . S . T. - k e y. Refer to “Emergency key” on page 5-22.2. While pushing the lock release buttons (A), remove the cover of the ignition switch.
3. Insert the emergency key into the ignition switch, and slowly push and turn.

depressed until it is
turned to the “LOCK” position, and remove. NOTE
 The vehicle is equipped with an electronic immobilizer. To start the engine, the ID code which the F.A.S.T.-key sends must match the one registered to the immobilizer computer. (Refer to “Electronic immobilizer (Anti-theftstarting system)” on page 5-28.)
To turn from “LOCK” to “ACC”
NOTE
 When the ignition switch cannot be turned from the “LOCK” position to the “ACC” position, turn the ignition switch while turn- ing the steering wheel in both directions.

Steering wheel lock Turn the emergency key to the “LOCK” posi- tion. Turn the steering wheel until it is locked. Turn the emergency key to the “ACC” posi- tion while moving the steering wheel slightly.
Tips for starting  Do not operate the starter motor continu- ously for longer than 15 seconds as this could run the battery down or damage the starter motor. If the engine does not start,turn the emergency key back to the “LOCK” position, wait a few seconds, and then try again. Trying repeatedly withthe engine or starter motor still turning will damage the starter mechanism.  If the engine will not start because the bat- tery is weak or discharged, refer to “Jump-starting the engine” on page 8-2 for instructions.
NOTE
 For vehicles equipped with CVT or Twin Clutch SST, the emergency key cannot be removed unless the selector lever (CVT) or the gearshift lever (Twin Clutch SST) is set to the “P” (PARK) position.NOTE
 Always install the cover of the ignition switch when not using the emergency key. Not doing so could cause damage if foreignmaterial such as dust
gets into the keyhole of
the ignition switch.CAUTION Do not turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position while the vehicle is mov- ing. This will cause the steering wheel to lock, making it impossible to operate the vehicle.  If the engine is stopped while driving, the power brake booster will stop functioning and greater effort for braking will berequired. Also, the power steering system will not function and it will require greater effort to manually steer the vehicle.
 Do not leave the ignition switch in the “ON” or “ACC” position for a long time when the engine is not running. The battery will run down. Do not turn the ignition switch to the “START” position when the engine is run- ning. It will damage the starter motor.

CAUTION Remove the emergency key when leaving the vehicle. If your vehicle needs to be towed, turn the emergency key to the “ACC” position tounlock the steering wheel.NOTE

5. Insert the F.A.S.T.-key into the emergency key. 6. Press and hold the brake pedal down with your right foot. 7. Press and hold the clutch pedal all the waydown (manual transaxle).
8. On vehicles equipped with manual trans- axle, place the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position. F.A.S.T.-key to the “START” position without pressing the accelerator pedal.Release the emergency key with the F.A.S.T.-key when the engine starts.
11. Remove the F.A.S.T.-key from the emer-
gency key.

 On vehicles equipped with manual transaxle, the starter will not operate unless the clutchpedal is fully depressed (Clutch interlock). This is a safety feature.
NOTE
 On vehicles equipped with CVT, the starter will not operate unless the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) posi- tion.On vehicles equipped with Twin Clutch SST, the starter will not operate unless the gear- shift lever is in the “P” (PARK) position orthe gearshift lever is in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position with the brake pedal depressed. For safety reasons, start the engine in the “P”(PARK) position so that the wheels are locked.
NOTE
 Minor noises may be heard on engine start- up. These will disappear as the engine warms up. WA R N I N G Make sure to remove the F.A.S.T.-key from the emergency key after the engine is started.If not removed, the F.A.S.T.-key could fall to the floor, which may interfere with pedal operation.Furthermore, the F.A.S.T.-key could pre- vent the driver’s knee airbag from inflat- ing normally or could be propelled tocause serious injury if the airbag inflates.NOTE
 If the emergency key is attached to a key ring, it may become impossible to insert the F.A.S.T.-key into the emergency key, and it may prevent the engine from being started.When using the emergency key to start the engine, first remove the key from the key ring.

To park the vehicle, first bring it to a com- plete stop, fully engage the parking brake,and then move the gearshift lever to 1st (on a uphill) or “R” (Reverse) (on a downhill) posi- tion for vehicles equipped with a manualtransaxle, set the selector lever {continuously variable transmission (CVT)} or the gearshift lever (Twin Clutch SST) to “P” (PARK) posi-tion for vehicles equipped with CVT or TwinClutch SST.
When parking on a hill, apply the parking brake and turn the front wheels toward thecurb on a downhill grade, away from the curb on an uphill grade.
Parking brake
To apply 1- Pull the lever up without pushing the
button at the end of hand grip. When the parking brake is set and the ignition switch is in the “ON” position, the brake warning light in the instru- ment cluster will come on. Before driving, be sure to release the parking brake.
To release 1- Pull the lever up slightly. 2- Push and hold the
button at the end of
the hand grip.
3- Push the lever downward.

To adjust the steering wheel height, release the tilt lock lever while holding the steeringwheel by hand, and raise or lower the steering wheel to the desired height. After adjustment, securely lock the lever bypulling it upward.

Adjust the inside rearview mirror only aftermaking any seat adjustments so as to have aclear view to the rear of the vehicle.
CAUTION Before driving, be sure that the parking brake is fully released and brake warning light is off. If you drive without the parking brake fully released, the warning display will appear onthe information screen in the multi-informa- tion display. If a vehicle is driven without releasing theparking brake, the brakes will be overheated, resulting in ineffective braking and possible brake failure. The outside mirror can be folded in toward the side window to prevent damage whenparking in tight locations.

When the rear window defogger switch is pressed with the engine running, the outside rearview mirrors are defogged or defrosted.Current will flow through the heater element inside the mirrors, thus clearing away frost or condensation.
The indicator light (A) will illuminate while the defogger is on. The heater will be turned off automatically in about 20 minutes.
