The brake assist system is a device assisting drivers who cannot depress the brake pedalfirmly such as in emergency stop situations and provides greater braking force. If the brake pedal is depressed suddenly, the brakes will be applied with more force thanusual.
When facing uphill, do
not rely on using the
hill start assist to maintain a stopped position as an alternative to depressing the brake pedal. Doing so could cause an accident. Do not turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” or “ACC” position while the hillstart assist is operating. The hill start assist could stop operating, which could result in an accident.
To operate
NOTE
The hill start assist is activated when all of the following conditions are met. • The engine is running. (The hill start assist will not be activated while the engine is starting or immediatelyafter the engine is started.)CAUTION
• The gearshift lever is in any position other than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL). • The vehicle is completely stationary, with the brake pedal depressed. • The parking brake is released. The hill start assist w
ill not operate if the
accelerator pedal is depressed before the brake pedal is released. The hill start assist also operates when reversing on an uphill slope.

CAUTION If the warning is displayed, the hill start assist will not operate. Start off carefully.NOTE
Park your vehicle in a safe place and stop the engine. Restart the engine and check whether the dis- play/indicator goes out, in which case the hill start assist is again working normally.If they remain displayed or reappear fre- quently, it is not necessary to stop the vehicle immediately, but the vehicle should beinspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as possible.

CAUTION The brake assist system is not a device designed to exercise braking force greater than its capacity. Make sure to always keep asufficient distance between vehicles in front of you without relying too much on the brake assist system.CAUTION

The anti-lock braking system helps prevent the wheels from lockin
g up when braking.
This helps you keep control of your vehicle and its direction.
When using the anti-lock brakes (sudden braking), steering is slightly different from normal driving conditions. Use thesteering wheel carefully. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Even if your vehi-cle is equipped with the anti-lock braking system, leave a greater braking distance when:• Driving on gravel or snow-coveredroads. • Driving on uneven road surfaces. Operation of anti-lock braking system is not restricted to situations where brakes are applied suddenly. This system may also prevent the wheels from lockingwhen you drive over manholes, steel roadwork plates, road markings, or any uneven road surface. When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel the brake pedal vibrat- ing and hear a unique sound. You mayalso feel as if the pedal resists being pressed. In this situation, simply hold the brakepedal down firmly. Do not pump the brake, which will result in reduced braking performance.
NOTE
Once the brake assist system is operational, it maintains great braking force even if the brake pedal is lightly released. To stop its operation, completely remove your foot from the brake pedal. The brake assist system may become opera- tional when the brake pedal is fullydepressed even if it has not been depressed suddenly. When the brake assist system is in use while driving, you may feel as if the depressed brake pedal is soft, the pedal moves in smallmotions in conjunction with the operation noise, or the vehicle body and the steering wheel vibrate. This occurs when the brakeassist system is operating normally and does not indicate faulty operation. Continue to depress the brake pedal. You may hear an operation noise when the brake pedal is suddenly or fully depressedwhile stationary. This does not indicate a malfunction and the brake assist system is operating normally.

CAUTION The anti-lock braking system cannot prevent accidents. It is your responsibility to take safety precautions and to drive carefully. To prevent failure of the anti-lock braking system, be sure all four wheels and tires are the same size and the same type. Never install a limited-slip differential as the anti-lock braking system may not function normally.Please consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.NOTE
After your vehicle is driven a short distance after starting the engine, you will hear the sound coming from the engine compartment. These are the normal sounds the anti-lockbraking system makes when performing a self-check. It does not indicate a malfunc- tion. The anti-lock braking system can be used after the vehicle has reached a speed overapproximately 6 mph (10 km/h). It stops working when the vehicle slows below approximately 3 mph (5 km/h).

The power steering system has mechanicalsteering capability in case the power assist islost. The active stability control (ASC) takes over-all control of the anti-lock braking system,traction control function and skid control function to help maintain the vehicle’s control and traction. Please read this section in con-junction with the page on the anti-lock brak- ing system, traction control function and skid control function.
WA R N I N G Do not stop the engine while the vehicle is moving. Stopping the engine would make the steering wheel extremely hard to turn, possibly resulting in an accident.
Hydraulic power steering sys- tem (HPS)

CAUTION Do not leave the steering wheel turned all the way in one direction. This can cause damage to the power steering system.
Electric power steering system (EPS)

During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicle into a parkingspace), a protection function may be acti- vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This function will make thesteering wheel gradually harder to turn. In this event, limit your tu
rning of the steering
wheel for a while. When the system hascooled down, the steering effort will return to normal. If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with the headlights on, the headlights may become dim. This behavioris not abnormal. The headlights will return to their original brightness after a short while.

slippery roads or during rapid steering maneuvers. It works by controlling the engine output and the brake on each wheel.

The ASC is automatically activated when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” posi-tion. You can deactivate the system by press- ing down the “ASC OFF” switch for 3 seconds or longer. When the ASC is deactivated, the dis- play/indicator will turn on. To reactivate the ASC, momentarily press the “ASC OFF” switch ; the display/indicator is turned off.

any other system, has limits and cannot helpyou to maintain traction and control of the vehicle in all circumstances. Reckless driv- ing can lead to accidents. It is the driver’sresponsibillty to drive carefully, This means taking into account the traffic, road and envi- ronmental conditions. Be sure to use the same specified type and size of tire on all four wheels. Otherwise, theASC may not work properly. Do not install any aftermarket limited-slip differential (LSD) on your vehicle. The ASC may stop functioning properly.NOTE
An operation noise may be emitted from the engine compartment in the following situa- tions. The sound is associated with checking the operations of the ASC. At this time, you may feel a shock from the brake pedal if you depress it. These do not indicate a malfunc-tion. • When the ignition switch is set to the “ON” position.
• When the vehicle is driven for a while after the engine is turned on.
When the ASC is activated, you may feel a vibration in the vehicle body or hear a whin-ing sound from the engine compartment. This indicates that the system is operating normally. It does not indicate a malfunction. When the anti-lock braking system warning light is illuminated, the ASC is not active.
Traction control function
CAUTION When driving a vehicle on a snowy or icy road, be sure to install snow tires and drive the vehicle at moderate speeds.
Skid control function

The skid control function operates at speeds of about 9 mph (15 km/h) or higher.

2. Confirm that the Twin Clutch SST control mode is set to “NORMAL” (on vehicles equipped with Twin Clutch SST). Refer to “Twin Clutch SST control mode”on page 5-75. 3. Accelerate or decelerate to your desired speed, then press and release the “COAST SET” switch (B) when the “CRUISE”indicator light is illuminated. The vehicle will then maintain the desired speed.

There are 2 ways to increase the set speed. Press and hold the “ACC RES” switch (C) while driving at the set speed, and your speedwill then gradually increase. When you reach your desired speed, release the switch. Your new cruising speed is nowset.
NOTE
If the cruise control is on when the ignition switch is turned to “LOCK” or “ACC” posi- tion, cruise control will be on automatically the next time you start the engine. The“CRUISE” indicator light will also be on. If the battery voltage is insufficient, the memory data for the cruise control may be erased. As a result, the “CRUISE” indicator light may not come on when you restart the engine.If this happens, press the “ON OFF” switch once again to turn on the cruise control.Type 2

When the average speed is being dis- played, if you hold down the multi-infor- mation meter switch, the average speed displayed at that time is reset. When the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position from the “ACC” or “LOCK” position, the mode settingchanges automatically from manual to auto. Switching to auto occurs automatically. Ifswitching to manual mode is done, how-ever, the data from the last reset is dis- played. When the average speed is being dis- played, if you hold down the multi-infor-mation meter switch, these calculations will be reset to zero. When the ignition switch has been set to the “ACC” or “LOCK” position for about 4 hours or more, the average speed dis- play will automatically reset.
This displays the average fuel consumption from the last reset to the present. There are 2 types of mode settings as follows.For details on how to change the average fuel consumption display setting, refer to “Chang- ing the function settings (With ignition switchin the “ON” position)” on page 5-121. The “ ” mark in the momentary fuel gauge shows the average fuel consumption. (Type 2)
When the average fuel consumption is being displayed, if you hold down the multi-information meter switch, the aver- age fuel consumption displayed at thattime is reset. When the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position from the “ACC” or“LOCK” position, the mode setting changes automatically from manual to auto. Switching to auto occurs automatically. The average speed display and the average fuel consumption display can be reset sepa-rately in both auto reset mode and manual reset mode.
“---” is displayed when the average speed cannot be measured. The initial (default) setting is “Auto reset mode”. The display setting can be changed to the preferred units (mph or km/h).Refer to “Changing the function settings (With ignition switch in the “ON” position)” on page 5-121. The average speed display memories for auto reset mode and manual reset mode are erasedif the battery is disconnected.
