Switching the Passenger AirbagOn
WARNING
You must switch the passengerairbag on when you are not using arearward child seat on the frontpassenger seat. Failure to adhere to thiswarning could result in serious personalinjury or death.
Turn the switch to position B.
When you switch the ignition on, check thatthe airbag deactivation warning lamp doesnot illuminate.
SIDE AIRBAGS
WARNING
Use seat covers designed for seatswith side airbags. Have these fittedby an authorized dealer.
The airbags are located inside theseatback of the front seats. There is a labelattached to the side of the seatback toindicate this.
The airbag will deploy during significantlateral collisions. The airbag will not deployin minor lateral and frontal collisions, rearcollisions, or overturns.
DRIVER KNEE AIRBAG
WARNING
Do not attempt to open the airbagcover.
The airbag will deploy during frontalcollisions or collisions that are up to 30degrees from the left or the right. Theairbag will inflate within a few thousandthsof a second and deflate on contact withthe occupants, thus providing a cushionbetween the driver’s knees and the steeringcolumn. During overturns, rear collisionsand side collisions, the knee airbag will notdeploy.

Note:The airbag has a lower deploymentthreshold than the front airbags. During aminor collision, it is possible that only theknee airbag will deploy.
SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS
The airbags are located over the front andrear side windows.

INFLATABLE SAFETY BELTS
Rear Inflatable Safety Belt (If
Equipped)
WARNINGS
Do not attempt to service, repair, ormodify the rear inflatable safety belt.
If the rear inflatable safety belt hasdeployed, it will not function again.The rear inflatable safety belt systemmust be replaced by an authorized dealer.
The rear inflatable safety belts are fittedin the shoulder portion of the safety beltsof the second-row outboard seatingpositions.
Note:The rear inflatable safety belts areonly compatible with belt positioningbooster seats of Group 2 and 3 whenproperly installed. See Installing ChildSeats (page 17). This is because they aredesigned to fill with a cooled gas at a lowerpressure and at a slower rate thantraditional airbags. After inflation, theshoulder portion of the safety belt remainscool to the touch.
The rear inflatable safety belt consists ofthe following:
•An inflatable bag located in theshoulder safety belt webbing.
•Lap safety belt webbing withautomatic locking mode.
•The same warning light, electroniccontrol and diagnostic unit as used forthe front safety belts.
•Impact sensors located in various partsof the vehicle.
How does the rear inflatable safety beltsystem work?
The rear inflatable safety belts willfunction like standard restraints ineveryday usage.
During a crash of sufficient force, theinflatable belt will inflate from inside thewebbing.

WARNINGS
Do not recline the seat backrest toofar as this can cause the occupantto slide under the safety belt,resulting in serious injury in the event of acrash.
Sitting improperly, out of position orwith the seat backrest reclined toofar, can result in serious injury ordeath in the event of a crash. Always situpright against your seat backrest, withyour feet on the floor.
Do not place objects higher than theseat backrest to reduce the risk ofserious injury in the event of a crashor during heavy braking.
When you use them properly, the seat,head restraint, safety belt and airbags willprovide optimum protection in the eventof a crash.
We recommend that you follow theseguidelines:
•Sit in an upright position with the baseof your spine as far back as possible.
•Do not recline the seat backrest morethan 30 degrees.
•Adjust the head restraint so that thetop of it is level with the top of yourhead and as far forward as possible.Make sure that you remaincomfortable.
•Keep sufficient distance betweenyourself and the steering wheel. Werecommend a minimum of 10 inches(25 centimeters) between yourbreastbone and the airbag cover.
•Hold the steering wheel with your armsslightly bent.
•Bend your legs slightly so that you canpress the pedals fully.
•Position the shoulder strap of thesafety belt over the center of yourshoulder and position the lap straptightly across your hips.
Make sure that your driving position iscomfortable and that you can maintain fullcontrol of your vehicle.
HEAD RESTRAINTS
WARNINGS
Fully adjust the head restraint beforeyou sit in or operate your vehicle. Thiswill help minimize the risk of neckinjury in the event of a crash. Do not adjustthe head restraint when your vehicle ismoving.
Raise the rear head restraints whenpassengers occupy the rear seats.
When using a forward facing childrestraint on a rear seat, alwaysremove the head restraint from thatseat.
