WARNING
Do not use the fuel operated parkingheater at fuel filling stations or nearsources of combustible vapors, dustor in enclosed spaces. This could result inserious personal injury or death.
The heater operates by warming theengine cooling system, it uses fuel fromthe vehicle fuel tank. The system onlyoperates when your vehicle is stationarywith the engine switched off.
The system only operates if there is aminimum of 16 liters (3.5 gallons) of fuelin the vehicle fuel tank. The system will notoperate if the battery charge level is low.
The system automatically turns on and offdepending on the engine coolanttemperature when the outside airtemperature is below 37°F (3°C), unlessyou have switched it off.
Note:The default setting is on.
Note:When the system is operating, exhaust fumes will come from under yourvehicle. This is normal.
Note:On vehicles with manual climatecontrol, heating the vehicle interior dependson the heater control settings. See ClimateControl (page 111).

Note:After you have switched your engineoff the fans may continue to run for a shortperiod of time.
The diesel particulate filter on your vehiclerequires periodic regeneration to maintainits correct function. Your vehicle will carryout this process automatically.
If your journeys meet one of the followingconditions:
•You drive only short distances.
•You frequently switch the ignition onand off.
•Your journeys contain a high level ofacceleration and deceleration.
You must carry out occasional trips withthe following conditions to assist theregeneration process:
•Drive your vehicle in more favorableconditions, which you will find at highervehicle speeds in normal driving, on amain road or freeway for a minimumof 20 minutes. This drive may includeshort stops that will not affect theregeneration process.
•Avoid prolonged idling and alwaysobserve speed limits and roadconditions.
•Do not switch the ignition off.
•Select a suitable gear to ideallymaintain engine speed between 1500and 3000 RPM.
SWITCHING OFF THE ENGINE
Vehicles With a Turbocharger
WARNING
Do not switch the engine off when itis running at high speed. If you do, theturbocharger will continue runningafter the engine oil pressure has droppedto zero. This will lead to prematureturbocharger bearing wear.
Release the accelerator pedal. Wait untilthe engine has reached idle speed and thenswitch it off.
ENGINE BLOCK HEATER
WARNINGS
Failure to follow engine block heaterinstructions could result in propertydamage or serious personal injury.
Do not use your heater withungrounded electrical systems ortwo-pronged adapters. There is a riskof electrical shock.
Note:The heater is most effective whenoutdoor temperatures are below 0°F(-18°C).
The heater acts as a starting aid bywarming the engine coolant. This allowsthe climate control system to respondquickly. The equipment includes a heaterelement (installed in the engine block) anda wire harness. You can connect thesystem to a grounded 220-240 volt ACelectrical source.

Vehicles With a Diesel Engine
During the first 2000 miles (3000kilometers), you may notice a ticking soundwhen your vehicle slows down. This is dueto adjustments of your new diesel engineand is normal.
REDUCED ENGINE
PERFORMANCE
WARNING
Continued operation will increase theengine temperature and cause theengine to shut down completely.
If the engine coolant temperature gaugeneedle moves to the upper limit position, the engine is overheating. See Gauges(page 78).
You must only drive your vehicle for a shortdistance if the engine overheats. Thedistance you can travel depends onambient temperature, vehicle load andterrain. The engine will continue to operatewith limited power for a short time.
If the engine temperature continues to rise, the fuel supply to the engine will reduce. The air conditioning will switch off and theengine cooling fan will operate continually.
1.Reduce your speed gradually and stopyour vehicle as soon as it is safe to doso.
2.Switch the engine off immediately toprevent severe engine damage.
3.Wait for the engine to cool down.
4.Check the coolant level. See EngineCoolant Check (page 247).
5.Have your vehicle checked by anauthorized dealer as soon as possible.
ECONOMICAL DRIVING
The following will help to improve fuelconsumption.
Tire Pressures
Check your tire pressures regularly tooptimize fuel economy. For best resultsuse the economy pressures. See TirePressures (page 273).
Gear Shifting
Use the highest drivable gear appropriatefor the road conditions.
