If the engine coolant level is co rrect, then the
radiator fan may be the cause of the malfunc­
tion.
If the generator wa rning/ind icator light
should also illuminate

fan belt may be damaged.
A WARNING
- If your vehicle should break down for
mechanical or other reasons, park at a
safe distance from moving traffic, turn
off the engine and turn on the hazard
warning lights

-Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escap ing from the en­
gine compartment - you risk being scald­
ed . Wait until you can no longe r see or
hear steam or coo lant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any ve hicle
is a da ngerous a rea. Before you perfo rm
any wor k in the engine compartment,
turn off the engi ne and a llow i t to cool.

@ Electro-mechanical power assist
If the indicator lig ht illuminates w hile you are
driving, there is a malfunction in the electro­
mechanical steering. If the ind icator light is
show ing ,£"~ . there may be a reduction in pow­
er steering assist. If the ind icator light is
show ing . , there may be a total loss of pow­
e r steering assist. The stee ring m ust be in­
spected immediately by a qua lified wor kshop
¢ ,&. .With the engine no t running (e.g. when
the car is being towed), there is a lso no power
assist avai lab le .
A WARNING
-
If there is a ma lf u nction, the indicator
light for the electro-mechanical power as­
sist illuminates. Seek professional assis­
tance.
~ Clutch pedal
App lies to vehicles: wit h manual transmiss ion
T he ind icator light [~l ill uminates if you do
not press the clu tch pedal when s ta rting the
engine. For safety reasons, the eng ine will on ­
ly start when the clutch peda l is pressed.
;;,I C; Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
If the hJ indicator lamp blinks while dr iv ing,
the ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Regu lation) is active ­
ly regulating .
If the
G! indicator lamp illuminates, the sys­
tem has switched the ESC off. In th is case, you
can switch the ignition off and then on to
switch the ESC on again. The system is func­
t ion ing complete ly when the ind icator lamp
swi tches off.
If the
I) indicator lamp illuminates, the ESC
was switched off w ith the
[ru button .
Stabilization program and AB S fault! See
owner 's manual
If the G! indicator lamp and the [I] ABS indi­
cator lamp illum inate and the driver message
appears, the ABS or electron ic different ia l lock
is malfunct io ning . This also interrupts the
ESC. The brakes still function with their nor ­
mal power, but ABS is not active.
Drive to your authori zed A udi dealer immedi­
ate ly to have the malfunction corrected .

Boo st p ressure indicator (boost )
A bar graph tha t begins on the left and fills in
toward the r ight i nd icates the engine's cu r­
rent load (mean ing the c urrent boost pres ­
sure) .
Engine oil temperature indicator
If the e ngine o il temperature is be low 140 ° F
(60
°(), the 'l::r. symbo l followed by th ree hy­
phens " - - -" and the °C un it is shown.
The engine has reached its ope rat ing temper­
ature when the eng ine o il tempe ra ture is be­
tween
176 °F (80 °() and 248 °F (120 °() u n­
der normal driving conditions . The engine oil
temperature may be higher if there is heavy
engine load and high temperatures outsid e.
T his is not a cause for concern as long as the
• qpage 16 or II q page 19 wa rning ligh t
in the display does not flash.
Lap timer
Introduction
Appl ies to vehicles: with lap timer
You can record and eva luate lap t imes with
the lap timer in the display~
page 29,
fig. 22 . The time is measured in minutes, sec­
onds and 1/10 seconds . The hours are a lso
shown when the lap time exceed s 60 minu tes.
T he max imum individual measurement is 99
hours .

Switching off the lights
• Turn the light switch to 0.
The head lights only work when the ignition is
switched on. While start ing the engine or
when switching off the ignition, the head- lights
will go off and only the side ma rker
lights will be on.
Daytime running lights (DRL) (USA
models)
T he daytime running lights can be turned on
or off using this function. If the function is ac­
tive, the daytime ru nning lights are turned on
automatica lly when the ign it ion is switched
on.
T he daytime running lights are activated
only
when the light switch is at the AUTO* or DRL *
position.
Daytime running lights (Canada models
only)
The daytime running lights are activated only
when the light switch ¢ fig. 39 is either at the
0 or the :;oo: pos ition.
T he daytime r unning lights funct ion cannot be
turned off.
Automatic headlight control*
In the switch position AUTO the automatic
headlight control
is turned on. The low
beams are turned on automatically through a
light sensor as soon as amb ient b rightness
(e .g. when driving into a tunnel) falls below a
value preset at the factory. When ambient
brightness increases aga in, the low beams are
turned off again automatically ¢.&..
In the
AUTO position the low beams are
switched off automatically when the ignition
is turned off .
Light Sensor Malfunction*
In the event of a light sensor malfunction, the
driver is notified in the instrument cluster dis­
play:
El Automatic headlights/automatic wipers
defective
For safe ty reasons the low beams are turned
on permanently with the switch in
AUTO* .
However , you can conti nue to turn the lights
on and off using the light switch. Have the

The benefit o f adaptive light is that the curve
and the edge of the road are better illuminat­
ed

automatically, depend ing on vehicle speed
and steering wheel angle.
When driving around bends, the head lights
are controlled according to steering wheel an ­
g le. So that there is no black area ahead of the
vehicle, the two main beams pivot at different
angles.
@ Tips
The system works above a speed of about
6 mph (10 km/h).
Front fog lights
Use the light switch to turn on the front fog
lights.

Turn signals and high beam lever
The lever on the left side of the steering col­
umn is used to operate the turn signals and
the high beam as well as the headlight flash­
er.

A WARNING
Do not use the hig h beam or headlight
flasher if you know that these could blind
oncoming traffic.
Emergency flasher
The emergency flasher makes other motorists
aware that you or your vehicle are in an emer­
gency situation.

When the emergency flashe r is on, all four
turn signals blink a t the same time. The tu rn
signa l indicator lights

cluster, as we ll as the light in the emergency
f lasher switch ~ blink likewise. The emergen­
cy flashers also work when the ignition is
turned off.
The emergency flasher will automatica lly
switch on if you are in an acc ident where the
airbag has deployed.

You shou ld switch on the emergency flash­

- you are the last vehicle standing in a tra f­
fic jam so that any other vehicles coming
can see you, or when
- your vehicle has broken down or you are
in an emergency s ituation, or when
- your vehicle is be ing towed by a tow
truck or if you are towing another vehicle
behind you.
Interior Lights
Interior lights
The interior lights include the reading lights
for the driver and the front passenger.

Activating door contact circuit

Front reading lights "<~
.,.. Press one of the switches ® to turn the
r ight or left reading light on or off.
With the door contact circuit, the inter ior
lights turn on as soon as you unlock the vehi­
cle or open the doors. The interior lights are
also t urned on when the ignition key is re­
moved. The lights turn off about 30 seconds
after the doors are closed. When the veh icle is
locked or when the ignition is turned on, the
interior lights are turned off.
When a door is open, the interior lights are
turned off after about 10 minutes to prevent battery dra ining.

The brightness of the lights is controlled au­
tomatically by a dimmer when they are
switched on and
off.
Instrument panel illumination
The illumination of the instruments , displays
and the center console can be adjusted.

You regulate the brightness of the instru­
ments with the left thumbwheel

With the ignition switched ON, the glow of in­
strument needles
can be adjusted to appear
brighter or dimmer.

With the lights switched on, the brightness of
instrument cluster (i.e. needles, gauges and
displays) and center console illumination can
be adjusted.
(D Note
The instrument cluster and center console
illumination (gauges and needles) comes
on when you switch on the ignition and the
vehicle headlights are off. Be aware of the
following difference between models built
to US or Canadian specifications :
- USA models: illumination of the instru­
ment cluster (gauges and needles), dash
and center console around the gearshift
lever is controlled by a light sensor locat­
ed in the instrument panel. The instru­
ment panel illumination will automati­
cally become dimmer as the daylight
fades away and eventually will go out
completely when outside light is very low.
This is to remind you, the driver, to
switch on the headlights before it gets
too dark.
- Canada models: instrument panel illumi­
nation will stay brig ht regardless of the
intensity of ambient light. Always be
aware of changes in outside light condi­
tions while you are driving. Respond in
time to fading daylight by turning the
light switch to position fD (or "AUTO" if
your car is equipped with this feature) to
turn on your headlights.
Luggage compartment light
The light is located on the right side of the
luggage compartment.
These lights come on automatically when the
rear lid is opened. The lights turn
off automat­
ically if the lid is left open for more then 10
minutes.
Vision
, Sun visors
Using the sun visors makes driving safer .

The driver's and passenger's sun visors can be
pulled from the brackets above the center of
the windshield and swung toward the doors
(!)<=:>fig. 47.
The vanity mirrors in the sun visors are equip­
ped with lids. When the lid is opened
@, the
mirror light in the headliner turns on auto­
matically. It turns
off when the lid is closed
and the visor is folded up again.
