-The engine compartment of any motor
vehicle is a potentially hazardous area.
Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, stop the engine and let it
cool down. Always exercise extreme cau­
t ion when working under the hood

Overview
Some ind icator lights tu rn on briefly to che ck
the func tion of that system when yo u switch
the ignition on. These systems are marked
with a./ in the following tables. If one of
these ind icator lights does not turn on, there
is a malfunction in that system.

radiator fan may be the cause of the malfunc­
tion.

steam or coolant escap ing from the en­
gine compartment - you risk being scald­
ed . Wait until you can no longe r see or
hear steam or coo lant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any ve hicle

any wor k in the engine compartment,
turn off the engi ne and a llow i t to cool.

@ Electro-mechanical power assist
If the indicator lig ht illuminates w hile you are
driving, there is a malfunction in the electro­
mechanical steering. If the ind icator light is
show ing ,£"~ . there may be a reduction in pow­
er steering assist. If the ind icator light is
show ing . , there may be a total loss of pow­
e r steering assist. The stee ring m ust be in­
spected immediately by a qua lified wor kshop
¢ ,&. .With the engine no t running (e.g. when
the car is being towed), there is a lso no power
assist avai lab le .
A WARNING
-
If there is a ma lf u nction, the indicator
light for the electro-mechanical power as­
sist illuminates. Seek professional assis­
tance.
~ Clutch pedal
App lies to vehicles: wit h manual transmiss ion
T he ind icator light [~l ill uminates if you do
not press the clu tch pedal when s ta rting the
engine. For safety reasons, the eng ine will on ­
ly start when the clutch peda l is pressed.
;;,I C; Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
If the hJ indicator lamp blinks while dr iv ing,
the ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Regu lation) is active ­
ly regulating .
If the
G! indicator lamp illuminates, the sys­
tem has switched the ESC off. In th is case, you
can switch the ignition off and then on to
switch the ESC on again. The system is func­
t ion ing complete ly when the ind icator lamp
swi tches off.
If the
I) indicator lamp illuminates, the ESC
was switched off w ith the
[ru button .
Stabilization program and AB S fault! See
owner 's manual
If the G! indicator lamp and the [I] ABS indi­
cator lamp illum inate and the driver message
appears, the ABS or electron ic different ia l lock
is malfunct io ning . This also interrupts the
ESC. The brakes still function with their nor ­
mal power, but ABS is not active.
Drive to your authori zed A udi dealer immedi­
ate ly to have the malfunction corrected .

Before you purchase any accessories, a lways

A WARNING
The outlet p lus any appliances plugged in­
to it rema in functional even if the ignition
is switched off or the ignition key is re­
moved. N ever leave children inside the ve­
hicle withou t supe rv ision.

To avo id damag ing the socket, only use
plugs that fit properly .

When the engine is off and accessor ies are
still plugged in and are on, the vehicle bat­
tery ca n still be dra ined .
Storage
General
A WARNING
-Always remove objec ts from the instru­
ment panel. Any items not put away
cou ld slide around inside the vehicle
wh ile driving or when acce lerating or
when applying the brakes or when driv­
ing around a corner.
- When you are drivi ng make sure tha t
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter console or other storage lo cations
cannot fa ll out into the footwells . In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake, depress th e clutch or acceler­
ate.
-Any articles of cloth ing that you have
hung up must not interfere with the driv­
er's v iew. The coat hooks are desig ned
only for lightweight clothing. Never hang
any clothing with ha rd, po inted or heavy
objects in the pocke ts on the coat hooks.
Dur ing sudden braking or in an acciden t -
especially if the airbag is deployed -
-
these objects co uld injure any passen­
gers inside the vehicle.
Glove compartment
The glove compartment is illuminated and
can be locked.

A WARNING
To reduce the risk of pe rsonal injury in an
accident or sudden stop, always keep the

Ignition ke y saf ety lock
After swi tching off the ignition, the ig nit ion
key can on ly be removed from the ign it ion
lock when the se lector lever is in the "P"
(Park) position . After you have removed the
key, the selector lever is locked and cannot be
moved.
Ignition on @
If it is diffic ult to turn the key after you have
inserted it into the ignition lock, turn the
steering wheel back and forth. This will take
the load
off the steering lock mechanism and
you will be able to turn the key freely and
start the engine.
Starting the engine @
In this position the engine starts . While the
engine is starting, the power supply to the headlights and other e lectrica l consumers is
temporari ly interrupted to conserve battery
power. After the engine has started, release
the key and it will return to posit ion
(D .
Before the starter can be operated again the
key must be turned back to position @. The
non -repeat loc k prevents you from damaging
the starter when the engine is runn ing .
A WARNING
-Never remove the key from the ign ition
lock whi le the vehicle is moving. The
steeri ng wheel will lock causing loss of
c ontrol.
- If you have to leave your vehicle -even
for just a m inute -always remove t he ig­
nition key and take it with you. This is es­
pecially important if you a re going to
leave ch ildren behind in the vehicle. The
children co uld start the engine or use
other vehicle controls. Unsupervised use
of vehicle controls (for examp le, power
windows) can cause serious personal in­
jur ies .
(!) Tips
If the vehicle battery has been disconnect­
ed and then reconnected, then you must
l eave the key in position
(D for about 5
seconds before you can start the engine.
Starting and stopping
the engine
Starting the engine
The engine can only be started with an origi­
nal Audi key.

.,. Let go of the key as soon as the engine
starts.
A cold engine may at first be loud after it has
been sta rted. This is due to the hydrau lic
valves bu ild ing up the oil pressure. This nor­
mal and no need for co nce rn .
If the engine does not start immediately, stop
trying after 10 seconds and then try to restart
the engine abou t 30 seconds late r.
A WARNING
Neve r star t or let the eng ine run in a con­
f ined or enclosed area . Exhaust fumes
from the engine contain carbon monoxide,
a colorless and odor less gas . Ca rbon mon ­
oxide can be fatal if inhaled.
- Never leave the engine id ling unattend­
ed. An unattended veh icle w ith a runn ing
engine poses a danger of personal injury
or theft.

the distance between your vehicle and
other vehicles.
- For safety reasons, the cruise control
should not be used in the city, in stop­
and-go traff ic, on twisting roads and
when road conditions are poor (such as
ice, fog, grave l, heavy rain and hydro­
planing) -risk of acc ident .
- Turn off the cruise control temporari ly
when entering turn lanes, highway exit
lanes or in construction zones .
- Please note that inadvertent ly "rest ing"
yo ur foot on the accelerator peda l causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is
because t he cr uise con trol is overridden
by the driver's acce lerat ion.
(D Tips
- Vehicles with manual t ransmission: You
can attain the set speed only if the cur­
r ently e ngaged gear a llows i t and the en­
gine i s not stressed. Shift ing to a h igher
or lower gear p romp tly will allow t he en­
gine to run smoothly.
- The cruise cont ro l cannot main tain a
constant speed when driving downhill.
The vehicle will accelerate unde r its own
weig ht. Downsh ift to a lower gear or use
the brakes to slow down.
Changing speed
"' Press lever in the 0 or 0 direction
i=> page 76, fig . 75 to increase or decrease
you r speed .
"' Re lease the lever to save that speed.
You can a lso press the accelerator pedal down
to inc rease your speed, e.g . if yo u want to
pass someone . The speed you saved ea rlier
will resume as soon as you release the acceler­
ator peda l.
If , however, you exceed your saved speed by
5 mph ( 10 km/h) for longe r than 5 minutes,
the cruise cont ro l w ill tu rn off tempora rily .
The symbol will go o ut but the saved speed
will be retained .

Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the
vehicle is not moving.
"' Turn on the ignition.
"' Pull lever into position

increase or decrease your speed.

This function makes it possible, for example,
to save the speed you want before dr iving on
the highway. Once on the h ighway, act ivate

Switching the system off
Temporary deactivat ion
"' Press the brake pedal, or
"' Keep the cl utch pedal pressed down longer ,
or
"' Press the lever into position @(not clicked
into place)

"' Drive for longer than 5 minutes at more
than 5 mph (10 km/h) above the stored
speed.
Switching off completely
"' Press lever into position @(clicked into
place), or
"' Switch the ignit io n off.
The system retains the saved speed if you de­
activate the cruise control temporar ily. To re­
sume the saved speed, re lease the brake or
clutch pedal and pull the lever to position
(D.
Switching the ignit ion off erases the saved
speed.
A WARNING
You shou ld only return to the saved speed
if it is not too fast for the current traffic
conditions -ris k of an accident!

Gearshift lever
Applies to vehicles: with manual transmission
The clutch pedal must be depressed all the
way before you can start the engine.
The manual transmission in your Audi is
equipped with an
interlock-feature.
• Depress the clutch pedal a ll the way.
• Start the engine with the gearshift lever in
Neutral and the clutch pedal depressed.
(D Note
Always depress the clutch peda l fully when
changing gears. Do not ho ld the vehicle on
a hill with the clutch pedal partially de­
pressed. This may cause premature clutch
wear or damage.
@ Tips
- Resting your hand on the gearsh ift lever
knob while driving will cause premature
wear in the transm ission.
- The back-up lights go on when you sh ift
i nto Reverse w ith the ignition on.
Gearshift pattern (6-speed manual
transmission)

· Introduction

Your vehicle is equipped with a S tron ic trans­
mission, also called a double-clutch system/
t ransmission .
Power is transferred between the engine and
the transmission by means of two independ­ ent clutches. They replace the torque convert­
er of conventiona l au tomatic transmissions
and allow the veh icle to accelerate wi thout a
noticeab le b reak i n the power flow.

When parking on level gro und, it is sufficient
to p lace the selector lever in
P. On a steeply
sloping road, yo u should first app ly the park­
ing b rake firm ly and then place the selector
l ever in
P. This way, yo u do not overload the
pawl mechanism and it is eas ier to move the
selector lever out of
P .
A WARNING
- Never leave you r vehicle with the eng ine
running wh ile in gear . If you must leave
yo ur vehicle with the engine running, set
the parking bra ke and engage the pa rk
lock.
- Whe n the engine is running and the
t ransmission is in gear (D,
5 or R) or in
"tiptronic" mode, it is essentia l that you
stop the vehicle with the footbrake .
When idling, the t ransmission of power
does not stop completely- the vehicle
"creeps" .
- Do not accelerate when you change the
selector lever position with the vehicle
stationary and the engine r unning -risk
of an accident!
- Never place the selector lever in the R or
N position while the vehicle is moving -
risk of a n accide nt!
- If you have to bring your vehicle to a stop
wh ile on an incl ine, keep the foot brake
depressed all the way down so tha t the
vehicle does not start to roll backward .
You should never hold the vehicle using
the clu tch if you are going to be stopped

on an incl ine. If you do, the cl utch w ill
start to slip when it ove rheats ca used by
the constant overload. This is dangerous because if the vehicle starts to roll back­
ward, you co uld cause an acc iden t. If the
clutch should start to s lip, you w ill feel
the vehicle "jerk" and the se le ctor lever
disp lay w ill st art bl ink ing .
- Before driving down a steep slope, re­
duce your speed and shift i nto a lowe r
gea r with "tiptronic".
- Do not ride the bra kes o r apply the bra ke
pe dal too often or too long. Const ant
brak ing c auses the brakes to overheat
and substantially reduces b raking per ­
formance, increases braking d istance or
causes complete fa il ur e of the brake sys ­
tem.
Hill Descent Assist

Hill Descent Assist helps the driver when driv­
ing down inclines .
Hill Descent Assis t is activ ate d by pressing the
brake while descending when the se lec tor lev ­
er is in D/S. The
5 tronic transmission auto­
matically shifts down to a gea r su itable for
the incline. H ill Descent Ass ist attempts to
maintai n the current veh icle speed w hen the
braking occurs, as far as physical and techn i­
ca l limits allow. It may be necessary to adjust
the speed using the brakes .
Hill Descent Assist sw itches off when the in­
cli ne leve ls out o r when the gas peda l is p ress ­
ed.
On vehicles with cruise control *

Hill Descent Assist is also act ivated when the
speed is set .
A WARNING
Hill Descent Ass ist cannot overcome physi­
cal limitations, so it may not be poss ible to
maint ain a constant vehicle speed under
all ci rcumst ances. A lways be re ady to ap­
p ly the brakes.

Kick-down feature
Applies to vehicles: with S tron ic
The kick-down feature allows maximum ac­
celeration .
If you depress the accelerator pedal fully be­
yond the full-throttle position, the transmis­ sion automatically downshifts one gear, de ­
pending on vehicle speed and engine rpm . The
upsh ift into the next higher gear takes place
as soon as the max imum specified engine
speed is reached.
A WARNING
Please note that the drive wheels can spin
if the kick-down is used on a smooth s lip­
pery road - risk of skidding!
Launch Control Program
Applies to vehicles: with S tron ic
The Launch Control Program permits maxi ­
mum acceleration .
In o rder to u se La unch Control, the ASR (An ti­
Slip Reg ulation) mus t be d is a b led. When ASR
is disab led, the ESC wa rning/ind icator light

in the inst rument cluster illuminates . So that
L aunch Cont ro l can be used, the engine must
be at operating temperature and the steer ing
wheel must not be turned.
~ With the eng ine running , brief ly press the
ESC button . The message "Stabilization pro­
gram off" or "Sport control Warning! Re­
stricted stability" in the driver information
system d isplay.
~ Sh ift the gear lever to "S" or the tiptronic ®
pos it ion .
~ Step on the b ra ke peda l w ith your left foot
and keep the bra ke peda l fully depressed for
at leas t one second .
~ With your right foot, step on the acce lera ­
tor to the w ide-open throttle position o r
K ickdown . The engine speed settles at about
3,200 rpm.
~ Take your left foot off the brake .
Transm iss ion 85
A WARNING
-Always adapt your dr iving to the traffic
f low.
- Onl y use Launch Control when road and
traffic cond itions allow it and other dr iv­
ers will not be endangered or annoyed by
your driving and th e acce le rat ion of the
veh icle.
- Ma ke sure that ESC remains enab led.
With the ESC disab led, th e vehicle could
b ra ke away, part icularly on a s lick and
slippe ry ro ad - ris k of skid ding!
- Once acceleration is fi nished, switch AS R
on agai n by br iefly pushing t he ESC bu t­
ton.
Back-up program
Applies to vehicles: with S tronic
In the event of a system malfunction, there is
a back-up program.
In the event of system ma lfunction, the auto ­
matic transmission switches to the fai l-safe
mode. All of t he se lector lever position d is­
plays for the au tomatic tra nsmission a re hi gh­
li gh ted wi th a light b ackgro und in t he i nstr u­
ment cluster d isp lay . In some cases you can ­
not use reverse gea r any more.
If the t ransmission swi tches to fail-safe
mode, yo u should t ake the ve hicle to an au­
t horized Audi dea le rship as soon as possib le
to have the condition corrected.
Clutch is overheating
Applies to vehicles: with S tronic
• Clutch is overheating ! Please stop veh i­
cle!
If the symbols a re i lluminated, the clutch is
ove rheating a nd could be damaged if you con­
tin ue to drive. Stop the vehicle and a llow the
transmission to cool with the se lector lever in
the P posit ion while the engine runs at idle. If
the warn ing does not turn off, do not continue
dr iv ing . See your author ized A udi dealer or
