12 Instruments and warning/indicator lights
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only when the ignition is
on . When the needle reaches the red area, the
warning light in the instrument cluster will il­
luminate ¢
page 20 00']. Time to refuel!
(D Note
Never run the tank completely dry! An ir­
regular supply of fue l can cause eng ine
misfiring and fuel could enter into the ex ­
haust system. The catalytic converter
could then overheat and be damaged.
Speedometer with odometer
The speedometer shows you the vehicle
speed , and the odometer shows you how
many miles (kilometers) you have driven.

The distance driven is shown in miles (USA
models) or in kilometers (Canada models).
lower odometer
The lower odometer shows the total number
of miles (kilometers) driven.
Upper odometer (trip odometer)
The upper odometer shows the tota l number
of mi les (kilometers) driven since you last re­
set the odometer back to zero . You can use
this odometer when you want to keep track of how many miles (kilometers) you have driven
for a single trip or errand. The last digit indi­
cates 1/10 of a mile (100 meters) . You can set
the trip odometer back to zero by pressing the
reset button

the display fie ld lighting for a few seconds.
Malfunction message
If there is a malfunction somewhere in the in­
strument cluster,
dEF w ill appear in the trip
odometer and will stay on . Contact your au­
thorized Audi dea ler to have the prob lem cor­
rected.
Immobilizer
When the ignition is sw itched on, the data on
the ignition key are scanned automat ica lly.
If an unauthor ized key was used,
SAFE is dis­
played continuously in the odometer display
field . The vehicle cannot be operated

Warning/indicator
Lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate functions or
malfunctions ¢.& .
Messages may appear with some indicator
li ghts. The messages turn off after a sho rt
time. To display a message again, press the
Set/Check button¢
page 10, fig. 3@ . If
there is more than one malfunction, the indi­
cator lights will turn on one after the other for
approximately two seconds each.
Some indicators lights in the display can turn
on in severa l co lors.
A WARNING
- Failure to heed warning lights and other
important vehicle information may result
in ser ious personal injury or vehicle dam­
age.
- Whenever stalled or stopped for repair,
move the vehicle a safe distance
off the
road, stop the engi ne, and turn on the
emergency flasher¢

Master key with remote control
The remote control allows you to lock or un­
lock the vehicle electronically .
The transmitter and battery are located in the
head of the remote control. The receiver is lo­
cated inside the vehicle. The maximum effec ­
tive range depends on several things . Remem­
ber, if the battery is wea k, the effective range
decreases.
If you need to replace the remote control, or if
you need to have it repaired, you must see
your author ized Audi dealer. Only then can
you use the key again.
(D Tips
- If the ignition is sw itched on, the remote
control system is deactivated .
- The remote control system can be affect­ ed by other systems operating in the
same frequency range close to the vehi­
cle, such as mobi le telephones, televi­
sion broadcasting stations, etc.

Master key battery replacement
Each master key contains a battery housed
under the cover .

key base and press both parts together .

D ispose of dead batteries properly so as
not to pollute the environment.

The replacement battery must be the
same specification as the origina l.
Electronic immobilizer
The immobilizer helps to prevent unauthor­
ized use of your vehicle.
A computer chip ins ide your key automatica lly
deactivates the electron ic immobilizer when
you insert the key in the ign ition lock. When
you remove the key from the ignition lock, the
electronic immobilizer is automatically acti­
vated once again.
A WARNING

Always take the key with you when you leave the vehicle. The key can disarm the
electronic engine immobilizer and permit
an unauthorized person to start the engine
and enable operation of the vehicle sys ­
tems such as power w indow leading to se­
rious pe rsonal injury.
(D Tips
- T he ve hicle cannot be started if an unau­
thorized key is used. The vehicle may not
start if another radio device s uch as a key
for another vehicle or a transponder is
located on the key ring .
