Your vehicle must use only unleaded
gasoline conforming to European stan-
dard EN228.
For optimum engine performance, select
unleaded gasoline with a Research Oc-
tane Number of 95 or higher.
Except EU area:
Your vehicle must use only unleaded
gasoline.
For optimum engine performance, select
unleaded gasoline with a Research Oc-
tane Number of 95 or higher.
To help prevent gas station mix−ups, your
vehicle has a smaller fuel tank opening.
The special nozzle on pumps with un-
leaded fuel will fit it, but the larger stan-
dard nozzle on pumps with leaded gas will
not.OCTANE/CETANE NUMBER
Select Research Octane Number 95 or
higher.
Use of fuel with an octane or cetane num-
ber lower than stated will cause persistent
heavy knocking. If severe, this will lead to
engine damage.
USE OF ETHANOL BLENDED GASOLINE
IN A GASOLINE ENGINE
Toyota allows the use of ethanol blended
gasoline where the ethanol content is up
to 10%. Make sure that the ethanol
blended gasoline to be used has a Re-
search Octane Number that follows the
above.
If your engine knocks...
If you detect heavy knocking even when
using the recommended fuel, or if you
hear steady knocking while holding a
steady speed on level roads, consult any
authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped pro-
fessional.
However, occasionally, you may notice
light knocking for a short time while accel-
erating or driving up hills. This is normal
and there is no need for concern.

200INFORMATION BEFORE DRIVING YOUR TOYOTA
Brake system
The tandem master cylinder brakesystem
is a hydraulic system with two separate
sub−systems. If either sub−system should
fail, the other will still work. However, the
pedal will be harder to press, and your
stopping distance will increase. Also, the
brake system warning light may come on.
CAUTION
Do not drive your vehicle with only a
single brake system. Have your
brakes fixed immediately.
BRAKE BOOSTER
The brake booster uses engine vacuum to
power−assist the brakes. If the engine
should quit while you are driving, you can
bringthevehicletoastopwithnormal
pedal pressure. There is enough reserved
vacuum for one or two stops—but no
more!
CAUTION
DDo not pump the brake pedal if the
engine stalls. Each push on the
pedal uses up the reserved vacuum.
DEven if the power assist is com-
pletely lost, the brakes will still
work. But you will have to push the
pedal hard, much harder than nor-
mal. And your braking distance will
increase.
ANTI−LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM
The anti−lock brake system is designed
to help prevent lock−up of the wheels
during a sudden braking or braking on
slippery road surfaces. This assists in
providing directional stability and steer-
ing performance of the vehicle under
these circumstances.
Effective way to press the ABS brake
pedal:
When the anti−lock brake system func-
tion is in action, you may feel the brake
pedal pulsating and hear a noise. In this
situation, to let the anti−lock brake sys-
tem work for you, just hold the brake
pedal down more firmly. Do not pump
the brake in a panic stop. This will re-
sult in reduced braking performance.
The anti−lock brake system becomes op-
erative after the vehicle has accelerated
to a speed in excess of approximately 10
km/h (6 mph). It stops operating when the
vehicle decelerates to a speed below
approximately 5 km/h (3 mph).
Depressing the brake pedal on slippery
road surfaces such as on a manhole cov-
er, a steel plate at a construction site,
joints in a bridge, etc. on a rainy day
tends to activate the anti−lock brake sys-
tem.
You may hear a click or motor sound in
the engine compartment for a few seconds
when the engine is started or just after
the vehicle begins to move. This means
that the anti−lock brake system is in self−
check mode, and does not indicate a mal-
function.
When the anti−lock brake system is ac-
tivated, the following conditions may
occur. They do not indicate a malfunc-
tion of the system:

“ABS” warning light
Vehicles without vehicle stability control
system—
The light comes on when the engine
switch is turned to the “ON” position. If
the anti−lock brake system works properly,
the light turns off after a few seconds.
Thereafter, if the system malfunctions, the
light comes on again.
When the “ABS” warning light is on (and
the brake system warning light is off), the
anti−lock brake systemdoes not operate,
but the brake system stilloperates con-
ventionally.
When the “ABS” warning light is on (and
the brake system warning light is off), the
anti−lock brake systemdoes not operate
so that the wheels could lock up during
a sudden braking or braking on slippery
road surfaces.
If either of the following conditions oc-
cur, this indicates a malfunction some-
where in the components monitored by
the warning light system. Contact any
authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped
professional, as soon as possible to
service the vehicle.
DThe light does not come on when the
engine switch is turned to the “ON”
position, or remains on.
DThe light comes on while you are driv-
ing.
A warning light turning on briefly during
operation does not indicate a problem.
CAUTION
If the “ABS” warning light remains on
together with the brake system warn-
ing light, immediately stop your ve-
hicle at a safe place and contact any
authorized Toyota dealer or repairer,
or another duly qualified and
equipped professional.
In this case, not only the anti−lock
brake system will fail but also the
vehicle will become extremely unsta-
ble during braking.

When the “ABS” warning light is on (and
the brake system warning light is off), the
anti−lock brake system, the brake assist
system, the traction control system and
the vehicle stability control system do not
operate, but the brakesystem stilloper-
ates conventionally.
When the “ABS” warning light is on (and
the brake system warning light is off), the
anti−lock brake systemdoes not operate
so that the wheels could lock up during a

BRAKE ASSIST SYSTEM
When you slam the brakes on, the
brake assist system judges as an emer-
gency stop and provides more powerful
braking for a driver who cannot hold
down the brake pedal firmly.
When you slam the brakes on, more pow-
erful braking will be applied. At this time,
you may hear a sound in the engine
compartment and feel the vibrations of the
brake pedal. This does not indicate a mal-
function.Vehicles with vehicle stability control sys-

The electric power steering system, us-
ing an electric motor, assists the turn-
ing of the steering wheel.
In the following cases, you may feel the
steering becomes heavy. However, the
electric power steering system warning
light does not come on. (Because it is
not a malfunction.)
DWhen maneuvering or turning frequently
over a long time
The power steering effect will be re-
duced to prevent the system from over-
heating. Avoid turning the steering
wheel, or stop the vehicle and turn the
engine switch to “ACC” or “LOCK”. The
system will become cool inabout 10
minutes.
NOTICE
Frequent maneuvering and turning
over a long time may cause damage
to the system in which the mecha-
nism prevents overheating of the elec-
tric power steering system.
DWhen racing the engine for 30 seconds
or more with the vehicle stopped
The normal power steering effect will
be obtained when you start driving.
DWhen the battery is discharged
Check the battery’s condition. If
necessary, recharge or replace the
battery. For details, see “Checking
battery condition” on page 278 in
Section 7−3.
INFORMATION
When the steering wheel is turned, a
motor operating sound (whining
sound) may be heard. This occurs
when the power steering motor works
and is not defective.

INFORMATION BEFORE DRIVING YOUR TOYOTA205
CAUTION
If the electric power steering system
warning light comes on, take your ve-
hicle to any authorized Toyota dealer
or repairer, or another duly qualified
and equipped professional, as soon
as possible. In this case, more effort
is required for the steering wheel to

while firmly gripping the steering
wheel.
Luggage stowage precautions
When stowing cargo and luggage in the
vehicle, observe the following:
DPut cargo and luggage in the luggage
compartment when at all possible. Be
sure all items are secured in place.
DBe careful to keep the vehicle bal-
anced. Locating the weight as far for-
ward as possible helps maintain bal-
ance.
DFor better fuel economy, do not carry
unnecessary weight.
CAUTION
DTo prevent cargo and luggage from
sliding forward during braking, do
not stack anything in the luggage
compartment higher than the seat-
backs. Keep cargo and luggage low,
as close to the floor as possible.
DNever allow anyone to ride in the
luggage compartment. It is not de-
signed for passengers. They should
ride in their seats with their seat
belts properly fastened. Otherwise,
they are much more likely to suffer
death or serious bodily injury, in
the event of sudden braking or a
collision.
DDo not place anything on the lug-
gage cover behind the rear seat-
back. Such items may be thrown
about and possibly injure people in
the vehicle during sudden braking
or an accident.
DDo not drive with objects left on
top of the instrument panel. They
may interfere with the driver’s field
of view. Or they may move during
sharp vehicle acceleration or turn-
ing, and impair the driver ’s control
of the vehicle. In an accident they
may injure the vehicle occupants.
