Q: What are the different types of add-on childrestraints?
A:Add-on child restraints, which are purchased by thevehicle's owner, are available in four basic types.Selection of a particular restraint should take intoconsideration not only the child's weight, height, andage but also whether or not the restraint will becompatible with the motor vehicle in which it willbe used.
For most basic types of child restraints, there aremany different models available. When purchasing achild restraint, be sure it is designed to be used in amotor vehicle. If it is, the restraint will have a labelsaying that it meets federal motor vehicle safetystandards.
The restraint manufacturer's instructions that comewith the restraint state the weight and heightlimitations for a particular child restraint. In addition, there are many kinds of restraints available forchildren with special needs.
{WARNING:
To reduce the risk of neck and head injury during
a crash, infants need complete support. This is
because an infant's neck is not fully developed
and its head weighs so much compared with
the rest of its body. In a crash, an infant in a
rear-facing child restraint settles into the restraint,
so the crash forces can be distributed across the
strongest part of an infant's body, the back and
shoulders. Infants should always be secured in
rear-facing child restraints.

For models with a three passenger third row seat, seethe information following for installing a child restraintwith a top tether in the third row, if your vehicle has one.Never install two top tethers using the same top tetheranchor.
For models with 60/40 second row seating, the rearright side passenger and center seating positions haveexposed metal anchors located in the crease betweenthe seatback and the seat cushion.
For models with second row bucket seats, both rearseating positions have exposed metal anchors locatedin the crease between the seatback and the seatcushion.
Second Row Seat—Bucket
For models with bucket second row seating, the toptether anchors are located at the bottom rear of the seatcushion for each seating position in the second row. Besure to use an anchor located on the same side of thevehicle as the seating position where the child restraintwill be placed.

Second Row Seat—60/40
For models with 60/40 second row seating, the toptether anchors are located at the bottom rear of the seatcushion for each seating position in the second row. Besure to use an anchor located on the same side of thevehicle as the seating position where the child restraintwill be placed.
Third Row Seat—Three Passenger
For vehicles with a three passenger third row seat, there is one top tether anchor located at the bottom rearof the seat cushion that can be used for either the thirdrow center or driver side seating position. Never installtwo top tethers using the same top tether anchor.
Do not secure a child restraint in a position without atop tether anchor if a national or local law requires thatthe top tether be attached, or if the instructions thatcome with the child restraint say that the top tether mustbe attached.

The vehicle may or may not have seat!mounted sideimpact airbags. The vehicle has roof-rail airbags. SeeAirbag Systemon page 2!74. Seat!mounted sideimpact airbags and roof-rail airbags are intended toinflate in moderate to severe side crashes. In addition, these roof-rail airbags are intended to inflate during arollover or in a severe frontal impact. Seat!mounted sideimpact airbags and roof-rail airbags will inflate if thecrash severity is above the system's designedthreshold level. The threshold level can vary withspecific vehicle design.
Roof-rail airbags are not intended to inflate in rearimpacts. A seat!mounted side impact airbag is intendedto deploy on the side of the veicle that is struck. Bothroof-rail airbags will deploy when either side of thevehicle is struck or if the sensing system predicts thatthe vehicle is about to roll over, or in a severe frontalimpact.
In any particular crash, no one can say whether anairbag should have inflated simply because of thedamage to a vehicle or because of what the repaircosts were. For frontal airbags, inflation is determinedby what the vehicle hits, the angle of the impact, andhow quickly the vehicle slows down. For seat!mountedside impact and roof-rail airbags, deployment isdetermined by the location and severity of the sideimpact. In a rollover event, roof-rail airbag deploymentis determined by the direction of the roll.
What Makes an Airbag Inflate?
In a deployment event, the sensing system sends anelectrical signal triggering a release of gas from theinflator. Gas from the inflator fills the airbag causing thebag to break out of the cover and deploy. The inflator, the airbag, and related hardware are all part of theairbag module.
Frontal airbag modules are located inside the steeringwheel and instrument panel. For vehicles with seat!mounted side impact airbags, there are airbagsmodules in the side of the front seatbacks closest to thedoor. For vehicles with roof-rail airbags, there are airbagmodules in the ceiling of the vehicle, near the sidewindows that have occupant seating positions.
How Does an Airbag Restrain?
In moderate to severe frontal or near frontal collisions, even belted occupants can contact the steering wheelor the instrument panel. In moderate to severe sidecollisions, even belted occupants can contact the insideof the vehicle.
Airbags supplement the protection provided by safetybelts. Frontal airbags distribute the force of the impactmore evenly over the occupant's upper body, stoppingthe occupant more gradually. Seat!mounted side impactand roof-rail airbags distribute the force of the impactmore evenly over the occupant's upper body.

{WARNING:
A crash severe enough to inflate the airbags may
have also damaged important functions in the
vehicle, such as the fuel system, brake and
steering systems, etc. Even if the vehicle appears
to be drivable after a moderate crash, there may
be concealed damage that could make it difficult
to safely operate the vehicle.
Use caution if you should attempt to restart the
engine after a crash has occurred.
In many crashes severe enough to inflate the airbag, windshields are broken by vehicle deformation.Additional windshield breakage may also occur fromthe right front passenger airbag.
.Airbags are designed to inflate only once. After anairbag inflates, you will need some new parts forthe airbag system. If you do not get them, theairbag system will not be there to help protect youin another crash. A new system will include airbagmodules and possibly other parts. The servicemanual for your vehicle covers the need to replaceother parts.
.The vehicle has a crash sensing and diagnosticmodule which records information after a crash.SeeVehicle Data Recording and Privacyonpage 9!18andEvent Data Recordersonpage 9!19.
.Let only qualified technicians work on the airbagsystems. Improper service can mean that anairbag system will not work properly. See yourdealer/retailer for service.

To replace the battery:
1. Separate the transmitter with a flat, thin objectinserted into the notch, located above themetal base.
2. Remove the old battery. Do not use a metal object.
3. Insert the new battery, positive side facing up.Replace with a CR2032 or equivalent battery.
4. Snap the transmitter back together.
Remote Vehicle Start
This feature allows you to start the engine from outsideof the vehicle. It may also start up the vehicle's heatingor air conditioning systems and rear window defogger.Normal operation of the system will return after the keyis turned to the ON/RUN position.
During a remote start, the climate control system willdefault to a heating or cooling mode depending on theoutside temperatures.
During a remote start, if your vehicle has an automaticclimate control system and heated seats, the heatedseats will turn on during colder outside temperaturesand will shut off when the key is turned to ON/RUN.If your vehicle does not have an automatic climatecontrol system, during remote start, you will need tomanually turn the heated seats on and off. SeeHeatedand Cooled Seatso n p a g e 2!5for additionalinformation.
Laws in some communities may restrict the use ofremote starters. For example, some laws may require aperson using the remote start to have the vehicle inview when doing so. Check local regulations for anyrequirements on remote starting of vehicles.
Do not use the remote start feature if your vehicle is lowon fuel. Your vehicle may run out of fuel.
