You will also hear an audible warning tone. The displays are color
coded in eith er red or yellow depending on their level of priority.
A red symbol means
Danger , a yellow symbol ind icates Warning . In
certain situations, information message for the driver appear in addi
tion to the red and yellow symbols.
Function test: automatic transmission
The Auto-Check Control will automat ically perform a test each t ime
you switch on the ignition. With the selector lever in
P or N , the
following message appears in the display:
When stationary apply foot brake while selecting gear.
When you a select a different gear (for example: R, D, etc.) , the
message will disappear and the Auto-Check function is d isplayed.
If there is a malfunction, then the malfunction message will appear
about 15 seconds after the you start the vehicle. At the same time
you will hear a warning tone. •
Driver information messages
Driver information messages are shown in the instru
ment cluster display in addition to the red and yellow
symbols .

For example, if the transmission selector lever is not in the P position
when the engine is turned off, the following message appears :
Shift to P, otherwise vehicle can roll away. Doors do not lock if
lever is not in P.
Th e ignition key can only be removed w ith the selector in this posi
tion . This and other messages are brought up if a function cannot be
carried out .
Driver messages and red symbols
If a red symbol appears in the display, a driver message can be shown
by pressing the (
CHECK) button.
For example, the symbo l for a prob lem with engine oil pressu re
following driver message appears in the display :
Switch off engine and check oil level
The dr iver message in the display goes out after about 5 seconds . The
dr ive r message can be disp lay ed again by briefly pressing the
(CHECK) button .
Driver messages and yellow symbols
If a yellow symbol appears in the display, a driver message is also
displayed automatically.
For example, the symbol
-> appears in the display, indicating low
windshield washer fluid level. The following message also appears:
Please top up washer fluid
The driver message disappears after a few seconds . The driver
message can be displayed again by briefly pressing the

Steering wheel with tiptronic ®
The shift buttons on the steering wheel allow the driver to
shift gears manually.

The shift b uttons are activated when the selector lever is in D, Sor in
the manual shi ft program (tiptronic) .
Of course, you can continue to use the manual shift program with the
selector lever on the center console .•
Fail-safe mode
If tiptronic® suffers a malfunction, the foil-safe mode
maintains minimum driveobility .
In the event of particular system malfunctions, the automatic trans
mission switches to the fail-safe mode. This is signalled by all the
segments in the display illuminating or going out.
You can continue to move the selector lever to all positions . The
man ual shift prog ram (tiptronic) is switched off in the fail-safe mode.

OP-eration
In selector lever positions D and Sand in the manual shift program,
the t ransm ission remains in 3rd gea r if 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear was
engaged previously. The transm ission remains in 5th gear, if 4th, 5th
or 6th gear was engaged previously.
T he next time you dr ive off or start the engine, 3rd gear is engaged.
You can cont inue to use reverse gear . But the electronic lockout for
reve rse gear is turned off.

If the transmission switches to fail -safe mode, you should take the
vehicle to an authorized Audi dealership as soon as possible to have
the cond ition corrected .•

• To reduce the risk of serious injury and vehicle dam age.
- Alway s lift the vehicle only at the special workshop hoist and
floor jack l ift points illustrated =>
page 353, fig. 289 and
=> fig. 290 .
- Failure to lift the vehicle at these points could cause the
vehicle to tilt or fall from a lift if there is a change in vehicle
weight distribution and balance. This might happen, for e xample , when heavy component s such as the engine block or
transmission are removed .
• When removing heavy components like these, an chor vehicle
to hoist or add correspond ing weights to maintain the center of
gravity . Otherwi se , the vehicle might tilt or slip off the hoist,
caus ing serious personal injury.

• Be aware of th e following points before lifting th e vehicle :
-The vehicle should neve r be lifted or jacked up from under
neath the eng ine oil pan , the transmission housing , the front or
rear axle or the body side members . This could lead to serious
damage.
- To avoid damage to the underbody or chassis frame, a rubbe r
pad must be inserted between the floor ja ck and the lift points.
- Before driving over a workshop hoist , check that the vehicle
weight does not exceed the permissible lifting capacity of the hoist . _..
