Electronic power control C
This warning/indicator light monitors the electronic
power control.
The warn ing/indicator light (Electro nic Power Control) illumi-
nates when you turn on the ignition as a function check .
(I] Tips
If this warning/indicator light illuminates while you are driving, then
there is a malfunct io n in the engine electron ics . Have the ma lfunct io n
corrected as soon as possib le by your authori zed Audi dealer or qual
ified repair fac ility. •
Generator 0
This warning/indicator light detects a malfunction in the
generator or in the vehicle's electrical system.
T he O warning/ind icator light illum inates when you sw itch on the
ignition and must go out after the engine has started .
If the O warning/indicator light illum ina tes while you are d riving,
you should contact your authorized Audi dea ler. Since the veh icle
bat tery is d ischarging, you shou ld switch off any unnecessary elec
trical consumers (for example, the air conditioner) .

system) in the instrument cluster sho uld ill uminate =>

Electronic stabilization program (ESP) ,
This warning/indicator light monitors the electronic
stabilization program .
The war ning/ indicator lig ht has t he fo llow ing funct ions:
• It blinks while you are driving when the ESP is working .
• It illumina tes when yo u sw itch on the ignition for approximate ly 2
seconds as a funct ion check.
• It ill uminates when the re is a malfunct ion in the ESP. T he
message
ESP fault! See owner's manual a lso appears in the instru
ment cl uste r display and a w arning tone sounds.
• It illuminates continuously when the ESP is sw itched off.
• It illum inates if the re is a malfu nction in the ABS, s ince the ESP is
part of the ABS system .
If the battery terminals were disconnected and re- connec ted, the
vehicle was jump started or the battery is very weak, the ESP sensor
system goes thro ugh a learning process for the firs t few yards . The
warning/indicator light illuminates. The warn ing/indicator light goes
out as soon as t he learning process is comp lete.
If the ESP warning/i ndicator lig ht ill uminates and stays on afte r you
have started the engine, t his may mean that the control system has
temporar ily switched off the ESP . If this is case , you ca n react ivate
the ESP by turning the ignition off and then on aga in. The
w ar ning/ind ica tor ligh t shou ld go ou t to show t hat the system is fully
functional again .

Fuel supply and filling your fuel tank
in. WARNING
Improper refu eling or handling of fuel can cause fire , explosion
and sev ere burns .
• Fuel is highly flammable and can cause seve re burns and other
injuries .
• Failure to shut the engine off while refueling and /or to inse rt
the pump nozzle fully into the fuel fill er n eck could cau se fuel to
spray out of filler neck or to overflow. Fuel sp ray and overflowing
fue l can cau se a fire.
• Never u se a cellula r telephone while refueling. The electromag
netic radiation can cau se spark s that can ign ite fuel vapor s and
cause a fire.
• Never get back into your vehicle while refue ling . If in ex cep
tional circumstances you must get back in your veh icle while refu
eling , make certain that you clo se th e door and touch metal to
discharge static electricity before touching the filler nozzle again .
Static electricity can cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors
released during refueling.
• N ever smoke or have an open flame anywhere in or near your
vehicle when refueling or filling a portable fuel containe r.
• For your safety, we strongly recommend that you do not travel
with a portable fuel container in your vehicle. The containe r, full
or empty may leak and could cau se a fire, especially in a crash .
• If, under except ional circumstances , you must t ranspo rt a
portable fuel container, please ob serve the following:
- Never fill a portable fuel container while it is anywhere in or
on the vehicle (for example, in the luggage compartment, or
on the trunk ). Static electricity can bu ild up while filling and
can ignite fuel vapors causing a fire .
- Alway s place a portable fuel container on the ground before
fill ing.
- Alway s keep the filler nozzle completely inside the portable
container before and during fill ing.

-If filling a portable container made of metal , the filler nozzle
must alway s be in contact with the container. This will help
prevent static electricity from dis charging and cause a fire .
- Never spill fuel inside the vehicle or luggage compartment .
Fuel vapor s are highly flammable.
- Always observe local and state /provincial laws regarding the
use , storage and transportation of fuel containers .
-Make certain the fuel container meets industry standards
(ANSI / ASTM F852-86).

If any fuel has spilled onto the ca r, it should be remove d immed iate ly
t o prevent damage to t he pa int.
For the sake of the environment
As soo n as t he correct ly operated nozz le switches off automatically
for the first time, the tank is full. Do not try to add more fue l because
fue l may spill out . In addition, the expansion s pace in the fuel tank
w ill b e filled -causing the fue l to overflow when it becomes warm an d
poll ute the e nvironment .
(I] Tips
• Runn ing your e ngine while ref uellin g may cause vapo rs to escape
or even cause fuel to spill out of the tank . This wou ld then shut off the
fue l nozzle before the tank is f ull.
• Do not refuel your vehicle with the ignition turned on. The fuel
gauge may o therwise not ind icate the correc t fu el leve l after
refuell ing .•

just going to replace a light bulb , then it is enough to switch off
the lights .
• Before disconnecting the battery , switch off the anti-theft
alarm system! Otherwise you will set off the alarm.
• When disconne cting the battery, first disconnect the negat ive
cable and then the po sitive cable.
• Before reconnecting the b attery, make sure all electrical
consumer s are sw itched off. Reconnect the positiv e cable fir st and
then the negative cable . Never inte rchange the cables -this could
start a fire!
• Never charge a frozen or a thawed-out battery.
It could
explode! If a battery has frozen, then it must be replaced . A
di scharged batter y can freeze over at 32 °F (0 °C ).
• Make sure the vent hose is always attached to the opening on
the side of the battery .
• Never use batteries which are damaged. There is the danger of
an explosion! Alway s replace a damaged battery.

• Battery posts , terminal s and related accessories contain lead
and lead compounds, chemicals known to the State of California
to cause cancer and reproductive problems. Wash hands after
handling.

Battery charging

- Make su re the area is well vent ilated w hen you charge the
batte ry .
- Attach the red (posi tive
(B) c la m p of the charging equip
me nt to the posit ive te rmin al o f th e bat tery and t he b lac k
( n eg at ive(:)) clam p to t he jumper term inal.
- Only now plug t he m ain s lead for the c harg ing e quip ment
i n to t he wa ll outlet a nd tu rn it on=:> &.
- Make sure the charging rate is not over 30 amps/14.8
Volt.
- When the b attery is fully c harg ed: Turn t he ch arging
equ ip m ent off and remo ve t he mains l ead fr om the wall
ou tlet.
- Now remove the clamp s for the cha rging eq uipment .
A discharged ba ttery can freeze a t temperat ures of on ly O 0C. Allow a
frozen batte ry to thaw comp letely before attempting to charge it
=> & . However, we recomme nd not usin g a thawed battery aga in
because the battery casing can be cracke d due to ice formation and
c a n l eak battery a cid. .,._

Battery charging (Maximum charging rate of 30
amps/14.8 Volt )
When charging at /ow voltages (e.g . w ith a trickle charger ), th e
battery cab les do not have to be disconnected first. The batte ry caps
should
not be opened when cha rging a ba ttery .
It is not necessary to remove the battery from the luggage compart
ment, and i t is also no t ne cess ary to dis connect the cables.
Fast charging the battery (charging rate above 14.8
Volts)
For technical reasons do not use a battery cha rger that uses voltage
grea te r t han 14 .8 Vol ts to ch arge yo ur vehicle's ba tte ry .
& WARNING
Charging a battery can be dangerou s.
• Always follow the operating instructions provided by the
battery charger manufacturer when charging your battery .
• Never charge a frozen battery . It may explode be cause of g as
trapped in the ice . Allow a frozen battery to thaw out first.
• Do not reu se batteries which were frozen . The battery h ousing
may have cracked and weakened when the battery froze.
• Charge the battery in a well ventilated area. Keep away from
open flame o r elect rical spark. Do not smoke. Hydrogen gas gener
ated by the battery i s explosive.
• To reduce the danger of e xplosion , never connect or disconnect
c harger cable s while the charger is operating.
• Fast charg ing a battery is dangerous and should only be
attempted by a competent technician with the proper equipment .
• Battery acid that may spill during charging should be wa shed
off with a so lution of warm water and baking soda to neutralize
the acid.

N ever use a fast cha rger as a booster to s tart the eng ine. This w ill seri
ously damage sensitive e lectronic components , such as control units,
re lays, ra dio, etc., as well as t he ba ttery cha rger. •
Battery replacement
The new battery must have the s ame specifications and
dim ensions as the original equipment b atte ry.
Inte lligent e nergy ma nagement in yo ur vehicle is responsib le for
distr ibuting the elect rical energy throughout your vehicle
~ page 258. T he intelligent energy management sys tem will keep
the eng ine battery charged better than vehicles without this system .
T o m ake s ure the addi tional e lectr ic al energy is available o nce aga in
after you have changed the battery, we recommend that you install
b atter ies of the same type and manuf actur e only ( the same as t hose
installed at the t ime you r vehi cle was delive red) . Specifications are
liste d on the ba ttery ho using. Your a uthorized Audi dealer w ill then
code the battery management control unit.
Th e new batte ry must have the same capacity, volta ge (12 vo lts),
ampe rage, const ruct io n and p lug sealing .
When installing the battery, make s ure the ign ition and all electrical
c ons umers are turned off.

Mak e sure the vent ilat io n hose o n the side o f th e battery is
connec ted, otherwise fumes or battery acid can leak o ut.

• App lying a higher vo ltage booster battery will cause expensive
damage to sens itive e lectron ic components, such as contro l units,
relays, radio, etc.
• There must be no electrical contact between the vehicles as other
wise current could already start to flow as soon as the positive(+)
terminals are connected.
[I] Tips
• The discharged battery must be properly connected to the
vehicle's electrical system . When jump starting or charging the
battery, never connect the negative ground cable to the battery nega
tive post because the battery manager system must be able to detect
the battery's state of charge . Always connect the negative ground
cable to the negative ground post of the battery manager control
unit. •

the order described below!

The procedure described below for connecting jumper cables
is intended to provide a jump start for your vehicle.
Vehicle with discharged battery:
- Turn off lights and accessories, move lever of automatic
transmission to
N (Neutral) or P (Park) and set parking
brake.
Connect POSITIVE(+) to POSITIVE(+) (red)
1. Connect one end to the positive terminal~ fig. 282 © of
your battery @.
2 . Connect the other end to the positive terminal @ of the
booster battery®·
Connect NEGATIVE(-) to NEGATIVE(-)
(black)
3. Connect one end to the negative terminal® of the
booster battery@.
