Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintenti onally on an incline, do
the following :
-Keep the switch pu lled and depress the accelerator. T he
parking brake stays a pp lied and prevents the vehic le from
ro lling backward.
- You can re lease the switch once you are sure tha t you are
deve lopi ng enough driving force at t he wheels by
depressing the accelerator .
Depending on the we ight of the rig (vehicle and trailer) and the
sever ity o f the in cl ine, you may roll backwa rds as you start . You can
prevent roll ing backwards by holding the park ing brake sw itch pulled
out and accele ra ting -just as you wou ld when starting on a hill wi th a
conventional hand brake .•
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake system fails or
locks .
-In an emergen cy , pull t he sw itch and contin ue to pull it to
slow your vehic le down with t he p arking brake.
- As soon as you re lease t he swi tch or acce lerate, the
bra king process s tops.
If you pull the switch and hold it above a speed of about 5 mph (8
km/h), the emergency braking fu nction is initiated . The vehicle is braked at all four wheels by activating the
hydraulic brake system.

In order not to act ivate the emergency brak ing by m istake, an audib le
warning tone (buzzer) sounds when the switch is pulled. As soon as
t he swi tch is re leased, or the acce lerator pedal is dep ressed , emer ­
gency braking stops .
& WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in an eme rgency , when
the normal foot brake has failed or the brake pedal is obstructed .
Using the parking brake to perform emergency braking will slow
your vehicle down as if you had made a full brake application . The
laws of physics cannot be suspended e ven with ESP and its associ ·
at ed components (ABS, ASR, EDS ). In corners and when road or
weather conditions are bad , a full brake application can cause the
vehicle to skid or the rear end to break away· ri sking an accid ent. •
Driver messages in the instrument cluster
Warning Vehicle incline i s excessive
Th is message appears when the parking brake is applied on an incline
t ha t exceeds abo ut 3 0%.
I n th is case the braking power of the parking brake may
not be
adequate
to prevent the vehicle from rolling unintentionally.

The ASR works in conjunction with the ABS. If a malfunction should
occur in the ABS, the ASR w ill also be out of action.
Activating
The ESP is automatically activated when the engine is started and it
performs a self-test. You can activate a deactivated ASR if required by
pressing the=>
page 240, fig. 214 button. When it is activated, the
message
ESP/ASR on appears briefly in the display .
Deactivating
You can deactivate the ASR if required by pressing the button (for less
than 3 seconds) =>
page 240, fig. 214. With the ASR deactivated , the
ESP check light comes on, see=>
page 14 . The message ASR off
appears in the display as well. The ASR can be deactivated at any
speed .
The ASR should normally be activated a ll the time. Only in certain
exceptional situations when some slip is desirable does it make sense
to deactivate the ASR. Examples:
• when driving with tire chains
• when driving in deep snow or on loose ground and
• when rocking the vehicle loose after it has become stuck .
When the abnormal situation is over, you should activate the ASR again.
& WARNING
The increased safety afforded by ASR does not mean that you can
take safety risks. Always adapt your driving style to the road
conditions and traffic situation.
[I] Tips
To ensu re that the ASR works properly, all four whee ls must be fitted
with ident ical t ires. Any differences in rolling radius of the t ires can
cause the system to reduce eng ine power when this is not desired.

What affects braking efficiency?
Operating conditions and driving habits
The brakes on today's automobiles are still subject to wear,
depending la rgely on ope rating conditions and driving habits=>& .
On vehicles that are either driven mostly in stop-and-go city traffic or
are driven hard, the brake pads should be checked by your authorized
Audi dealer more often than specified in the
Warranty & Mainte­
nance booklet.
Failure to have your brake pads inspected can result
in reduced brake performance .
On steep slopes, you should use the braking effect of the engine. This
way, you prevent unnecessary wear on the brake system. If you must
use your brakes, do not hold the brakes down continuously. Pump the
brakes at intervals.
Noises may occur when brak ing depending on the speed, braking
force and outside cond itions such as temperatu re and humid ity.
Moisture or road salt
If you are driving faster than 31 mph (50 km/h) and the windshield
wipers are on, the brake pads will briefly touch the brake discs in
regula r interva ls so as to improve reaction time when braking on wet
surfaces. You, the driver, will not not ice anything.
Under certain condit ions, for example, when driving through water or
very heavy rai n, or even after washing your vehicle, the braking effect
can be reduced due to moisture (or in free zing conditions ice) on the
bra ke pads. A few careful brake applications should dry off the brake
pads or remove any ice coatings.
Th e effectiveness of the brakes can be reduced when the vehicle is
dr iven on a salt-covered road and the brakes are not used. H ere too,
you should clean off accumu lated salt coating from brake discs and
pads with a few careful applications of the brake=>&,.

Servotronic® - advanced power
steering system
The power steering systems uses the power of the
running engine to allow precise steering with little effort .
The advanced Servotronic® power steering system senses the road
speed and ele ct ronically adjusts power assistance to provide
comfortable and safe steering response exactly matched to the
veh icle speed.
Power steering will not work if the engine is off. As a resu lt, the
steeri ng wheel will be hard to turn.
T he power steeri ng fluid level is checked du ring the sched uled main ­
tenance services .
0 Note
If there is an electronic malfunction, servotronic will still function
like a conventional power s teer ing system, provid ing a cons tant
steering support force that is no longer proportionate to the vehicle
speed. This is most noticeable when t urning the s teer ing wheel at low
speeds (for example when park ing), -more effort will be required
than us ua l.
• Be aware of the d ifferent than usual steering response and adjust
your stee ring force accord ingly .
• Have the prob lem checked and set right by an Audi dealer as soon
as possib le.
[ i ] Tips
• When the e ngine is running, neve r hold the stee ring whee l turned
all the way to the right or to the left for longer than 15 seconds. The
powe r steering pump wi ll overheat the hydra ulic fluid if yo u keep
holding the steering wheel turned all the way . This is likely to damage
t he power s teer ing system . •
If the power steering system s hou ld fa il entirely, or if the engine
is no t ru nning (fo r examp le, while be ing towed), you will st ill be able
to steer the vehicle. However,
considerably more effort will be
req uired to do so .
• If the power steering system should have a leak, or is not func­
tioning prope rly, con tact your au thor ized A udi dealer immedia tely.
• The power steer ing system requires a specia lly formulated
hyd raulic fluid. The power steer ing rese rvoir is the one loc ated
farthest to the rear on the left s ide of the eng ine compartme nt
=>
page 281. The correct fluid leve l in the reservo ir is im port an t fo r
proper functioning of the power steeri ng .•

Driving with your quattro ®
With all wheel drive, all four wheels are driven.
CieneraL information
Wi th all wheel drive, power is d istribu ted to all fou r whee ls. This
happens automatically depending on your dr iv ing style and the road
condi tions a t the t ime. See also=>

W inter tires
When driving in the winter, your vehicle with a ll whee l dr ive has an
adv anta ge, eve n w it h regula r tir es. In w inte r road co nditio ns i t may
be advisable to mount winter tires (or all-season tires) for improved
dr iveabili ty and b raking: t hese tires m ust be moun ted on all four

things including proper installation and balancing,
corr ect tire pressure and driving style .

nly placed around the t ire .
Ma rks o n the t ire sidewall (for examp le " TWI" or o ther symbols) indi­
cate the positions of the tread wear indicators . Worn t ires must be

Tire pressure
Incorrec t tire pressure causes premature wea r a nd c an cause sudde n
tire blow -o ut. Fo r th is reason, tire press ure must be checked at least
once a mont h =>
page 302.
Driv ing style
Dr iv ing fast aro und curves, he avy ac cele ration and hard braking
increase tire wear.
Rotating tires for more even wear
For all four t ires on your veh icle to have the same se rvice life, we
recommend that the fron t and rear ti re s are rotated according to the
tire ma nufactu rer's suggested tire rotat ion intervals. Please
remember the fo llow ing :
• Tire ro tat ion intervals may d iffe r from the vehicle serv ice intervals
out lined in your Maintenance and War ranty Booklet .
• The longer one tire is used in one locat ion on the vehicle, the more
it wears a t certain points; therefore, we recommend that you follow
the tire manufacture r's suggested tire rotation interva ls .
• Vehicles with front -whee l drive experien ce more tread wear on the
front wheels compa red to all-whee l dr ive (quattro
® ).
• Please ro ta te tires as shown=> fig . 2 30.
• Extra care must be taken when rotating direction-specific tires
=>page 326 .
Wheel balancing
The wheels on new vehicles are balanced . Howeve r, various sit uat io ns
dur ing everyday driving can cause them to become unbalanced,
res ulting in vibr ations yo u can us ua lly fee l throug h the s tee rin g
whee l. •

• Alway s use tire s, rim s and wheel bolts that meet the specifica­
tions of original factory-installed tires or other combinat ions that
have been specifically approved by the vehicle manufacturer .
• Tires age even if they are not being used and can fail suddenly,
especially at high speed s. Tires that are more than 6 years old can
only be used in an emergency and then with special care and at
lower speeds.
• Never mount used tir es on your vehicle if you are not sure of
their "previous history. " Old used t ires m ay have been damaged
even though the damage cannot be seen that can lead to sudden
tire failure and loss of vehicle control.
• All four wheels must be fitted with radial tires of the same
type , size (rolling circumference) and the same tread pattern .
Driving with different tire s reduces vehicle handling and can lead
to a loss of control.
• If the spare tire is not the same as the tires that are mounted
on the vehicle - for example w ith winter tires - only use the spare
tire for a short period of time and drive with extra care. Refit the
normal road wheel as soon as safely possible.
• Never drive fa ster than the maximum speed for which the tires
on your vehicle are rated because ti re s that are driven faster than
their rated speed can fail suddenly.
• Overloading tire s cause heat build-up, sudden tire failure,
including a blowout and sudden deflation and loss of control.
• Temperature grades apply to tires that are properl y inflated
and not over or underinflated.
• For technical reasons it is not always possible to u se wheels
from other veh icles- in some cases not even wheels from the same
vehicle model.
• If you install wheel tr im discs on the vehicle wheels , make sure
that the air flow to the brakes i s not blocked . Reduced airflow to
the brakes can them to overheat, increasing stopping distances
and cau sing a collision.
& W ARNING (continued )
• Run flat ti res may only be used on vehicles that were equipped
with them at the factory. The vehicle must have a chassi s designed
fo r run flat tires and a factory-installed tire pressure monitoring
system* that indicates a loss of tire pressure. Incorrect use of run
flat tires can lead to vehicle damage o r accidents. Check with an
authorized Audi dealer or tire speciali st to see if your vehicle can
be equipped w ith run flat tires . If run flat t ires are used , they must
be installed on all four wheels. Mixing tire types is not permitted.

• F or tech nical reasons, it is no t gene rally poss ible to use the wheel

• If the spare tire is different from the tires th at you have mou nted

veh icle as soon as possible.

• If the tir e pres sure indicator appears in the instrument cluster
display, one or more of your tires i s significantly under-inflated.
Reduce your speed immediately and avoid any hard steering or
braking maneuvers. Stop as soon a s possible and check the tires
and their pressures . Inflate the tire pressure to the proper pres­
sure as indicated on the vehicle 's tire pressure label=>
page 300.
Driving on a significantly under -inflated tire causes the tire to
overheat and can lead to tire failure. Under -inflation also is likely
to impair the vehicle's handling and stopping ability.
& WARNING (co ntinued )
• The driver is re sponsible for maintaining the correct tire pres­
sures . You must check the tire pres sures regularly .
• Under certain conditions (such as a sporty driving style , winter
conditions or unpaved roads) , the pressure monitor indicator may
be delayed.
• Ask your authorized Audi dealer if run-flat tires may be used on
your vehicle . Your vehicle registration becomes invalid if you u se
the se tires when not permitted. Damage to your vehicle or acci­
dents could also result.

• T he tire pressure monito ring system stops working when there is
an ES P/ABS malf u nctio n.
• Using snow cha ins may res ult in a system ma lf u n ct ion .
• The tire pressure mon itor ing system on your Au di was calibrated
using t ires with the "AO" or "RO " id ent ificat ion . We re comme nd
using these tires. •
