General Description
AIRBAG SYSTEM
•Do not discard the uninflated airbag or preten-
sioner.
•When airbag control module, front sub sensor,
side airbag sensor and curtain airbag sensor are
removed, do not reuse the bolts and nuts of them.
Always use new bolts and nuts for them.
•Do not drop each airbag module, airbag control
module and each sensor, or store these parts un-
der high temperature over 93°C (199°F), or let wa-
ter, oil or grease get on them; the internal parts may
be damaged or the reliability may be greatly low-
ered.
•After removal of each parts for airbag system,
keep them with the pad facing upward on a dry,
clean and flat surface without heat, light sources,
moisture and dust.
•The airbag modules for driver’s, passenger’s,
side or curtain, or the pretensioner must not be dis-
assembled.
•When performing attachment of the steering
wheel and steering roll connector, make sure to
perform adjustment of the steering roll connector.
•The removed front seat with airbag module must
be kept at least 200 mm (8 in) away from walls and
other objects.

6. Side Airbag Module
A: REMOVAL
CAUTION:
Refer to “CAUTION” of “General Description”
before handling the airbag module. 4, CAUTION, General Description.>
NOTE:
Remove the passenger’s side by referring to driv-
er’s side.
1) Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
2) Disconnect the ground cable from battery and
wait for at least 20 seconds before starting work.
3) Remove the front seats. AL, Front Seat.>
4) Disconnect the connector from the back side of
seat cushion assembly, then remove the side air-
bag harness.
5) Remove the backrest cover. ASSEMBLY, Front Seat.>
6) Remove the nuts, and remove the side airbag
module assembly from the back rest frame assem-
bly.
B: INSTALLATION
CAUTION:
•Refer to “CAUTION” of “General Description”
before handling the airbag module. 4, CAUTION, General Description.>
•Be sure to perform the system calibration for
occupant detection system after passenger’s
seat installation. CALIBRATION (REZEROING), OPERATION,
Subaru Select Monitor.>
1) Make sure that there is no foreign matter on side
airbag module.
2) Install the side airbag module (A) to backrest
frame assembly.
CAUTION:
When attaching the side airbag module assem-
bly, make sure to sandwitch the seat back cov-
er between the seat back side bracket and side
airbag module.
Tightening torque:
6.0 N·m (0.61 kgf-m, 4.4 ft-lb)
3) Install the backrest cover. SEMBLY, Front Seat.>
4) Draw the side airbag harness around the back
side of seat cushion assembly.
5) Recline the seat or slide it backward and for-
ward, and check there is no contact between the
seat backrest assembly, cushion cover assembly
and side airbag harness.

Side Airbag Sensor

9. Side Airbag Sensor
A: REMOVAL
1) Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
2) Disconnect the ground cable from battery and
wait for at least 20 seconds before starting work.
3) Remove the center pillar lower trim. 44, CENTER PILLAR LOWER TRIM, REMOVAL,
Side Trim.>
4) Remove the seat belt retractor of the front outer
seat belt. SEMBLY, REMOVAL, Front Seat Belt.>
5) Remove the nut and disconnect the airbag con-
nector to remove side airbag sensor.
B: INSTALLATION
CAUTION:
•Do not reuse the bolt and nut.
•Always use new bolts and nuts for them.
Install in the reverse order of removal.
Tightening torque:
8 N·m (0.82 kgf-m, 5.9 ft-lb)
C: INSPECTION
Check for the following, and replace the damaged
parts with new parts.
•Mounting bracket or connector of side airbag
sensor is damaged.
•Side airbag is deployed.

1CHECK POOR CONTACT.
1) Turn the ignition switch to OFF, disconnect
the battery ground cable, and wait more than
20 seconds.
2) Confirm that the connector that is between
the airbag control module and the passenger’s
side warning box is securely connected.
Is there poor contact in any
connector?
Replace the airbag
harness connec-
tor.
Go to step 2.
2CHECK AIRBAG MAIN HARNESS.
1) Disconnect the connector (AB6) from air-
bag control module.
2) Connect the battery ground terminal and
turn the ignition switch to ON.
NOTE:
Neither of ON/OFF illuminates when it is nor-
mal.
Is the passenger's seat airbag
indicator lit?
Go to step 3.Go to step 4.
3CHECK AIRBAG MAIN HARNESS.
1) Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
2) Remove the passenger’s side warning box
and disconnect the connector (i116).
3) Connect the connector (1U) in the test har-
ness U to connector (AB6).
4) Measure the resistance between connec-
tors (2U) and (4U) in the test harness U and
chassis ground.

Replace the pas-

4CHECK THE AIRBAG HARNESS.
1) Connect the connectors (7U) and (8U) in
the test harness U.
2) Connect the battery ground terminal and
turn the ignition switch to ON.
Is the passenger's seat airbag
indicator lit?
Replace the airbag
control module.

Go to step 5.
5CHECK THE AIRBAG HARNESS.
1) Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
2) Connect the connector (1U) in the test har-
ness U to connector (AB6).
3) Measure the resistance between connec-
tors (2U) and (4U) in the test harness U and
the connector (i116).

Is the resistance less than 10
Ω?
Go to step 6.Repair the bulk-
head harness. Or
replace the airbag
main harness with

6CHECK BODY HARNESS.
1) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
2) Measure the voltage between connector
(i116) and chassis ground.

Is the voltage more than 10 V? Replace the pas-
senger’s side

A: REMOVAL
1) Disconnect the ground cable from battery.
2) Remove the driver’s seat. MOVAL, Front Seat.>
3) Remove the cover attachment bolts, and remove
the cover.
4) Disconnect the connector.
5) Remove the bolts and then remove the naviga-
tion unit.
B: INSTALLATION
Install in the reverse order of removal.

19.Rear Quarter Trim
A: REMOVAL
1) Remove the third-row seats. REMOVAL, Third-row Seats.>
2) Remove the rear door scuff plate. REMOVAL, Side Trim.>
3) Remove the lower anchor cover.
4) Remove the luggage floor mat and utility box.
5) Remove the luggage floor end cover.
6) Remove the cover, and remove the bolts inside.
7) Remove the rear quarter lower trim.
8) Remove the rear quarter top trim.
9) Remove the lower anchor bolts of second-row
seat belts.
10) Remove the upper and lower anchor bolts of
third-row seat belts.
11) Remove the cover, and remove the bolts in-
side.
12) Remove the cap (A) on the upper side of pillar
trim, and remove the bolt inside.

A: REMOVAL
1. FRONT FLOOR MAT
1) Remove the front seats. AL, Front Seat.>
2) Remove the second–row seats. REMOVAL, Second-row Seats.>
3) Remove the console box. MOVAL, Console Box.>
4) Remove the instrument panel lower cover. to EI-36, REMOVAL, Instrument Panel Lower Cov-
er.>
5) Remove the glove box. AL, Glove Box.>
6) Remove the following trims. MOVAL, Side Trim.>
•Front door scuff plate
•Rear door scuff plate
•Front pillar lower trim
•Center pillar lower trim
7) Remove the remote opener cover. 45, REMOVAL, Remote Openers.>
8) Remove the navigation unit. MOVAL, Navigation Body.>
9) Remove the clips, then remove the front floor
mats.
2. REAR FLOOR MAT
1) Remove the second–row seats. REMOVAL, Second-row Seats.>
2) Remove the third-row seats. (7 seater mod-
el)
3) Remove the luggage box (front). (5 seater mod-
el)
4) Remove the rear quarter lower trim. 45, REMOVAL, Rear Quarter Trim.>
5) Remove the clips, then remove the rear floor
mats.
B: INSTALLATION
Install in the reverse order of removal.
NOTE:
•Secure the mat firmly with hook and clip.
•Insert the mat edge firmly into the groove of side
sill cover.

Roof Trim
EXTERIOR/INTERIOR TRIM
23.Roof Trim
A: REMOVAL
1) Disconnect the ground cable from battery.
2) Remove the spot map light. MOVAL, Spot Map Light.>
3) Remove the room light or rear entertainment
(model with rear entertainment system). LI-30, REMOVAL, Room Light.>
4) Remove the sun visor. AL, Sun Visor.>
5) Remove the assist grip. AL, Assist Grip.>
6) Remove the front pillar upper trim and center pil-
lar upper trim. Trim.>
7) Remove the rear quarter upper trim. 45, REMOVAL, Rear Quarter Trim.>
8) Remove the sunroof opening trim.
9) Remove the clips and each harness, pull out the
rear center seat belt, and remove the roof trim.
B: INSTALLATION
Install in the reverse order of removal.
