Diagnostic Procedure with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)
BRAKE VACUUM CONTROL (BVC) (DIAGNOSTICS)
Step Check Yes No
1CHECK CONNECTOR.
Check that status of the brake vacuum sensor
and brake vacuum pump connection.
Are the brake vacuum sensor
and brake vacuum pump con-
nected firmly?
Go to step 2.Connect the con-
nector.
2CHECK FUSE.
1) Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
2) Remove the brake vacuum pump fuse.
3) Check the condition of fuse.
Is the fuse blown out? Replace the fuse. Go to step 3.
3CHECK BRAKE VACUUM PUMP RELAY.
1) Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
2) Remove the brake vacuum pump relay from
the relay box.
3) Connect the battery to terminals No. 1 and
No. 3 of the brake vacuum pump relay.
4) Measure the resistance between the brake
vacuum pump relay terminals.
Te r m i n a l s
No. 4 — No. 5:
Is the resistance less than 1
Ω?
Go to step 4.Replace the brake
vacuum pump
relay.
4CHECK BRAKE VACUUM PUMP RELAY
POWER SUPPLY.
1) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
2) Measure the voltage between brake vac-
uum pump relay connector and chassis
ground.
Connector & terminal
(VC2) No. 1 (+) — Chassis ground (–):
(VC2) No. 4 (+) — Chassis ground (–):
Is the voltage more than 10 V? Go to step 5.Repair the open or
ground short cir-
cuit of power sup-
ply circuit.
5CHECK HARNESS BETWEEN ECM AND
BRAKE VACUUM PUMP RELAY CONNEC-
TOR.
1) Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
2) Disconnect the connector of ECM.
3) Measure the resistance of the harness
between ECM and the brake vacuum pump
relay connector.
Connector & terminal
(B136) No. 8 — (VC2) No. 3:
Is the resistance less than 1
Ω?
Go to step 6.Repair the open
circuit of harness
between ECM and
the brake vacuum
pump relay con-
nector.
6CHECK HARNESS BETWEEN THE BRAKE
VACUUM PUMP AND BRAKE VACUUM
PUMP RELAY CONNECTOR.
1) Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
2) Disconnect the brake vacuum pump con-
nector.
3) Measure the resistance of the harness
between the brake vacuum pump and brake
vacuum pump relay connector.
Connector & terminal
(VC2) No. 5 — (B417) No. 1:
Is the resistance less than 1
Ω?
Go to step 7.Repair the open
circuit of the har-
ness between the
brake vacuum
pump and the
brake vacuum
pump relay con-
nector.
7CHECK THE HARNESS BETWEEN ECM
AND BRAKE VACUUM PUMP CONNECTOR.
Measure the resistance of the harness
between brake vacuum pump connector and
the chassis ground.
Connector & terminal
(B417) No. 1 — Chassis ground:
Is the resistance more than 1
MΩ?
Go to step 8.Repair the ground
short of the har-
ness between
ECM and brake
vacuum pump
connector.
8CHECK THE HARNESS BETWEEN ECM
AND BRAKE VACUUM PUMP CONNECTOR.
Measure the voltage between brake vacuum
pump connector and the chassis ground.
Connector & terminal
(B417) No. 1 (+) — Chassis ground (–):
Is the voltage less than 0.5 V? Go to step 9.Repair the battery
short of the har-
ness between the
ECM and the

11) Connect the engine coolant hoses to throttle
body.
12) Connect the connector to throttle body.
13) Install the generator.

14) Install the air cleaner case and air intake cham-
ber.

15) Install the fuse of fuel pump to main fuse box.
16) Connect the ground cable to the battery.
17) Install the collector cover.
C: DISASSEMBLY
1) Remove the engine harness from intake mani-
fold.
2) Remove the throttle body.

3) Remove the manifold absolute pressure sensor.

4) Remove the purge control solenoid valve.

5) Loosen the clamp which holds fuel injector pipe
to fuel hose, and then disconnect the pipe from fuel
hose.
6) Remove the bolts which install fuel pipes on in-
take manifold.

21.Fuel
A: PROCEDURE
1. RELEASING OF FUEL PRESSURE
WARNING:
•Place “NO FIRE” signs near the working area.
•Be careful not to spill fuel on the floor.
1) Remove the fuse of fuel pump from main fuse
box.
2) Start the engine and run until it stalls.
3) After the engine stalls, crank it for five more sec-
onds.
4) Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
2. DRAINING FUEL
WARNING:
•Place “NO FIRE” signs near the working area.
•Be careful not to spill fuel on the floor.
1) Set the vehicle on a lift.
2) Disconnect the ground cable from battery.
3) Open the fuel filler flap lid, and remove the fuel
filler cap.
4) Lift-up the vehicle.
5) Remove the fuel tank protector.
6) Set a container under the vehicle and remove
the drain plug from fuel tank to drain fuel from fuel
tank.
7) Tighten the fuel drain plugs.
NOTE:
Use a new gasket.
Tightening torque:
26 N·m (2.65 kgf-m, 19.2 ft-lb)
8) Install the fuel tank protector.
NOTE:
Use a new nut.
Tightening torque:
Nut
9 N·m (0.9 kgf-m, 6.6 ft-lb)

Fuel Tank

9) Install the service hole cover of fuel pump.
(1) Push on the grommet to install it to the sec-
ond hole cover.
(2) Tighten the bolt.
(3) Connect the connector.
10) Install the second seat.
STALLATION, Second-row Seats.>
11) Install the fuse of fuel pump to main fuse box.
12) Connect the battery ground cable to the bat-
tery.
C: INSPECTION
1) Check that the fuel tank does not have holes,
cracks or is damaged in any other way.
2) Make sure that the fuel pipe and fuel hose are
not cracked and that the connections are tight.

7. Fuel Pressure
A: INSPECTION
WARNING:
Before removing the fuel pressure gauge, re-
lease the fuel pressure.
1) Release the fuel pressure.
PRESSURE, PROCEDURE, Fuel.>
2) Disconnect the fuel delivery hose and connect
fuel pressure gauge.
(1) Disconnect the fuel delivery hose using the
ST1.
ST1 42099AE000 CONNECTOR REMOVER
(2) Connect the fuel pressure meter using the
ST2 and ST3.
NOTE:
ST2 is a genuine Subaru part.
ST2 42075AG690 FUEL HOSE
ST3 18471AA000 FUEL PIPE ADAPTER
3) Install the fuse of fuel pump to main fuse box.
4) Start the engine.
5) Measure the fuel pressure after warming up the
engine.
Fuel pressure:
Standard: 338 — 348 kPa (3.4 — 3.5 kgf/cm2,
49 — 50.5 psi)
NOTE:
The fuel pressure gauge registers 10 to 20 kPa (0.1
to 0.2 kgf/cm2, 1 to 3 psi) higher than standard val-
ues during high-altitude operations.
