Pipe Assembly
POWER ASSISTED SYSTEM (POWER STEERING)
C: INSPECTION
Check all disassembled parts for wear, damage or other problems. Repair or replace the defective parts as
necessary.
CAUTION:
Although the surface layer materials of rubber hoses have excellent weathering resistance, heat re-
sistance and resistance for low temperature brittleness, they are likely to be damaged chemically by
brake fluid, battery electrolyte, engine oil and automatic transmission fluid and their service lives are
to be very shortened. Wipe off hoses immediately if any of these come into contact with the hoses.
Since resistances for heat or low temperature brittleness are gradually declining according to time
accumulation of hot or cold conditions for the hoses and their service lives are shortening accord-
ingly, it is necessary to perform careful inspection frequently when the vehicle is used in hot weather
areas, cold weather areas and a driving condition in which many steering operations are required in
short time.
Particularly continuous work of relief valve over 5 seconds causes to reduce service lives of the hos-
es, the oil pump, the fluid, etc. due to over heat.

Oil Pump
POWER ASSISTED SYSTEM (POWER STEERING)
C: DISASSEMBLY
1) Using the ST, place the oil pump in the vise, and
remove the 4 bolts holding the rear cover.

2) Remove the pressure plate.
3) Use a screw driver to pry the retaining ring.
CAUTION:
Do not remove the cam rings and rotors.
4) Install the pressure plate.
5) Temporarily tighten the rear cover to the front
casing.
6) Remove the oil pump pulley.
7) Place the oil pump in the vice.
CAUTION:
Do not place the oil pump in the vise directly.
Support the oil pump lightly using soft pads to
protect it.
8) Use a screw driver to pry the oil seal out.
CAUTION:
Be careful not to scratch the inner surface of
the casing.
D: ASSEMBLY
1) Caution during reassembly
(1) When removing O–rings, oil seals and snap
rings, always replace with new parts.
(2) Thoroughly wash the parts and allow to dry.
Make sure the parts do not come into contact
with cleaning oil or dust.
(3) The reassembly must be performed in a
clean place. Make sure lint or other foreign ob-
jects do not stick to parts.
(4) Cleaning oil tends to remain inside the front
casing. Use compressed air to completely clean
out any remaining cleaning oil.
(5) Make sure the parts are not rusted. Once
the parts are washed and dried, use a specified
hydraulic oil to prevent rust.
(6) Reassemble in the reverse order of removal.
2) At the bearing positions, apply grease to the oil
seal and front casing inner surfaces.
CAUTION:
Make sure the inner surface of the front body is
not damaged.

Basic Diagnostic Procedure
TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (DIAGNOSTICS)
1. Basic Diagnostic Procedure
A: PROCEDURE
CAUTION:
Remove foreign matter (dust, water, oil etc.) from the tire pressure monitoring control module con-
nector when removing or installing.
NOTE:
To check harness for broken wires or short circuits, shake trouble spot or connector.

warning light lit or started blinking.
2) Before performing diagnostics, check the
components which might mal-affect tire pres-

2CHECK DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE
(DTC).
1) Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
2) Connect the Subaru Select Monitor to data
link connector.
3) Turn the ignition switch to ON and Subaru
Select Monitor to ON.
NOTE:If the communication function of the Subaru Se-
lect Monitor cannot be executed normally,
check the communication circuit. TPM(diag)-11, COMMUNICATION FOR INI-
TIALIZING IMPOSSIBLE, INSPECTION, Sub-
aru Select Monitor.>
4) Read the DTC. OPERATION, Read Diagnostic Trouble Code
(DTC).>
Is DTC displayed? Go to step 4.Go to step 3.
3PERFORM GENERAL DIAGNOSTICS.
1) Inspect using “General Diagnostic Table”.

General Description
TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (DIAGNOSTICS)
2. General Description
A: CAUTION
1. SRS AIRBAG SYSTEM
Airbag system wiring harness is routed near the
TPM control module.
CAUTION:
•Wiring harnesses of all airbag system are yel-
low. Do not use the electrical test equipment on
these circuits.
•Be careful not to damage the airbag system
wiring harness when servicing the tire pressure
monitoring control module.
2. TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING CON-
TROL MODULE
•If the alteration of tire rotation, the installation po-
sition or the replacement of transmitter is per-
formed, ID registration for the transmitter is
required. TRANSMITTER ID, OPERATION, Subaru Select
Monitor.>
•When adjusting tire pressure indoors in winter,
there is a big temperature difference between the
indoor facilities and outside. Once the car is outside
where the temperature is lower, the air pressure in
the tires will drop, causing the tire pressure warning
light to come on, even if the pressure in the tires
was adjusted to standard values indoors. To avoid
this, it is necessary to adjust the tire pressure to the
high side in consideration of the difference in tem-
perature between inside and outside.
B: INSPECTION
Before performing diagnosis, check the following
item which might affect the quality of the tire pres-
sure monitoring system.
1. TIRE
•Inspect that the tire pressure is within the speci-
fication while the tire is cool. (Refer to Tire Caution
Label.)
•Check the tires for damage or the insertion of for-
eign matters.
2. BATTERY
Check that amount of battery fluid, gravity and volt-
age are within the specifications.
Standard voltage: 12 V or more
Specific gravity: 1.260 or more

2. DATA DISPLAY
1) On the «Main Menu» display screen, select the {Each System Check} and press the [YES] key.
2) On the «System Selection Menu» display screen, select the {Tire Pressure Monitor} and press the [YES]
key.
3) Press the [YES] key after the {Tire Pressure Monitor} is displayed.
4) On the «Tire pressure monitor diagnosis» display screen, select the {Data Display}, and then press the
[YES] key, then necessary data will be displayed.
•A list of the support data is shown in the following table.
3. CLEAR MEMORY
1) On the «Main Menu», select the {2. Each Sys-
tem Check} and press the [YES] key.
2) On the «System Selection Menu» display
screen, select the {Tire Pressure Monitor} and
press the [YES] key.
3) Press the [YES] key after the {Tire Pressure
Monitor} is displayed.
4) On the «Tire Pressure Monitor Diagnosis» dis-
play screen, select the {Memory Clear} and press
the [YES] key.
5) When «Done» and «Turn ignition switch OFF»
are shown on the display screen, turn the Subaru
Select Monitor and ignition switch to OFF.
NOTE:
For details concerning operation procedure, refer
to the “SUBARU SELECT MONITOR OPERATION
MANUAL”.
4. REGISTER TRANSMITTER ID
Perform the procedures below to register the trans-
mitter.
•Transmitter replaced.
•Switched the position of the transmitter (rotated
tires)
•Replaced the tire pressure monitoring control
module.
NOTE:
•If registration of the transmitter ID is not possible
after 2 attempts, replace the tire pressure monitor-
ing control module. SURE MONITORING CONTROL MODULE,
REMOVAL, Tire Pressure Monitoring System.>
•If the ignition switch and Subaru Select Monitor
power are turned OFF while registering the trans-
mitter, or if registration is not possible for more than
5 minutes, the registration mode is cancelled.
•When rotating tires, there is no affect on the per-
formance or functions of the tire pressure monitor-
ing control module even if the transmitter (ID) is not
registered, however, the tire position displayed on
the Subaru Select Monitor will be incorrect.
1) Adjust all tire pressures to the specifications.
NOTE:
Refer to the tire caution label on the driver's side
door for the correct tire pressure.

2) Connect the Subaru Select Monitor, on the
«Main Menu» display screen, select the {2. Each
System Check} and press the [YES] key.
3) On the «System Selection Menu» display
screen, select the {Tire Pressure Monitor} and
press the [YES] key.
4) Press the [YES] key after the {Tire Pressure
Monitor} is displayed.
5) On the «Tire Pressure Monitor Diagnosis» dis-
play screen, select the {Transmitter ID regist con-
firm} and press the [YES] key.
6) {When ID registration mode execute, Registered
ID is deleted Proceed?} is displayed then press the
[YES] key.
7) Touch the transmitter registration tool to the side
wall area near the air valve on the front left tire, and
press the switch. The transmitter ID is sent to the
tire pressure monitoring control module. (At that
time, the tire pressure warning light blinks to con-
firm that the registration has started.)
NOTE:
•Register the transmitter ID in the order of Left
Front → Right Front → Right Rear → Left Rear.
•The transmitter registration tool is used by touch-
ing the side wall area near the transmitter.
•When registration of each tire is completed, the
hazard light will blink and {ID registration complet-
ed} is displayed on the Select Monitor screen.
•If registration procedure stop in the halfway (turn-
ing ignition switch to OFF, wrong registration order,
etc), proceed from step 5)
8) When ID registration is completed, the tire pres-
sure warning light remains lit for approximately 2
seconds, to end the registration. Switch to the
screen displaying the transmitter ID on the Subaru
Select Monitor display. DISPLAY TRANSMITTER (ID)., OPERATION,

9) Check the transmitter ID that was registered,
then perform a driving test. PROCEDURE, Inspection Mode.>
5. DISPLAY TRANSMITTER (ID).
1) On the «Main Menu» display screen, select the
{Each System Check} and press the [YES] key.
2) On the «System Selection Menu» display
screen, select the {Tire Pressure Monitor} and
press the [YES] key.
3) Press the [YES] key after the {Tire Pressure
Monitor} is displayed.
4) On the «Tire Pressure Monitor Diagnosis» dis-
play screen, select the {Transmitter ID regist con-
firm} and press the [YES] key.
5) Select {Transmitter ID Data Monitor} and press
the [YES] key to display the transmitter ID.
