54 Opening and closing
Key
The vehicle's equipment includes two keys
with remote control. Each key contains an
emergency key element. To help you distin-
guish between the two keys, the emergency
key element release catches each have a dif-
ferent colour.
The key is configured at the factory to cen-
trally lock and unlock the following:
R the doors
R the rear door or tailgate (Cabriolet)
R the fuel filler flap G
Risk of accident
If children are left unsupervised in the vehi-
cle, they could:
R open a door from the inside at any time,
even if it has been locked
R start the vehicle using a key which has
been left in the vehicle
R release the parking brake
They could endanger themselves and oth-
ers. Never leave children unsupervised in
the vehicle. Always take the key with you when leaving the vehicle, even if you are
only leaving it for a short time. 1

i The key can also be used to open and
close the sliding/tilting sunroof* and the
side windows. You can open them using the
summer opening feature (Y page 85). You
can close them using the convenience clos-
ing feature (Y page 85). Factory settings X
To unlock centrally: press thekbut-
ton.
The turn signals flash once. The locking
knobs in the doors pop up. The anti-theft
alarm system* is deactivated.
When it is dark, the surround lighting also
comes on if it is activated in the on-board
computer.
i If you do not open any of the doors after
you have unlocked the vehicle, the vehicle
relocks automatically after approximately
40 seconds.
X To lock centrally: press thejbutton.
The turn signals flash three times if the
doors, rear door and fuel filler flap are
closed. The locking knobs in the doors drop
down. The anti-theft alarm system* is
primed.
Individual settings You can change the setting of the locking
system in such a way that pressing the
k button only unlocks the driver's door
and the fuel filler flap. This could be useful if
you frequently travel on your own. Controls

To change the setting: press and hold down
the k andj buttons simultaneously
for approximately six seconds until battery
check lamp 1flashes twice.
The key now functions as follows:
X To unlock the driver's door and fuel
filler flap: press thekbutton once.
X To unlock centrally: press thekbut-
ton twice.
X To lock centrally: press thejbutton.
Restoring the factory settings X
Press the kandj buttons simulta-
neously for approximately six seconds until
battery check lamp 1flashes twice. Opening the doors from the inside
You can open a door from the inside at any
time, even if it has been locked. 1

If the door is locked, locking knob 1pops
up. The door is unlocked and can be
opened. Automatic locking feature
The vehicle will lock automatically once you
have pulled away.
You can switch off the automatic locking
function via the on-board computer
(Y page 108).
When you open one of the front doors from
inside, the vehicle is unlocked centrally.
i The vehicle is locked automatically when
the ignition is switched on and the wheels
begin to turn. , there is a risk of being
locked out when the vehicle is being
pushed or tested on a dynamometer.
i The doors unlock automatically in the
event of an accident if the force of the
impact exceeds a predetermined level. Controls

56 Locking/unlocking the vehicle from
the inside
You can centrally lock or unlock the vehicle
from the inside. This feature may be useful if,
for example, you wish to unlock the
passenger door from the inside or lock the
vehicle before you pull away. G
Risk of accident
Do not leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle. They could open a door from the
inside – even if it is locked – and thereby
endanger themselves and others.
i You cannot unlock the vehicle centrally
from the inside if the vehicle has been
locked from the outside using the key.
i It is only possible to lock the vehicle cen-
trally if all doors are closed. 1

Risk of poisoning
When the engine is running and the rear
door is open, exhaust gases could enter the
vehicle interior. This could poison you.
Therefore, you should make sure that the
rear door is always closed when the engine
is running. G
Risk of accident
Do not leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle. They could open the rear door from
the inside and endanger themselves and
others.
! The tailgate swings out to the side when
opened. Therefore, make sure that there is
sufficient clearance.
i In emergencies, you can also unlock and
open the rear door manually
(Y page 229).
Opening from the outside You can only open the rear door after unlock-
ing it first.

Risk of injury
Make sure that nobody can become trap-
ped as you close the rear door. i
Do not leave the key in the luggage com-
partment. Otherwise, you could lock your-
self out.
Locking/unlocking the vehicle from the
outside You can lock the rear door of your vehicle
independent of the central locking.

Insert emergency key element into the rear
door lock.
X Turn the emergency key element clockwise
to position 1.
i If the vehicle is not unlocked centrally and
you unlock and open the rear door with the
emergency key element, the anti-theft
alarm system* is triggered. Tailgate (Cabriolet)

Risk of poisoning
Exhaust fumes could enter the vehicle inte-
rior if the engine is running and the tailgate
is open. This could poison you. Therefore,
you should make sure that the tailgate is
always closed when the engine is running. G
Risk of accident
While the external spare wheel bracket is
folded to the side, the tail lamps may be
blocked from view. Other road users may
then fail to see you and crash into your
vehicle. Additionally, secure your vehicle
using a warning lamp or a warning triangle.
Do not drive with the spare wheel bracket
folded out. Make sure that the spare wheel bracket is
closed correctly.
Otherwise, the freely moving spare wheel
bracket could injure people or cause an
accident.
Opening from the outside You can only open the tailgate after it has
been unlocked.

X Swing spare wheel bracket 1to one side.
! Make sure that there is sufficient clear-

Quick-locking mechanism

wise.
X Open zippers 5upwards approximately
10 cm.
i When the convertible soft top is open and
the tonneau cover* is attached, you need
only separate the quick-locking mecha-
nisms on the tonneau cover*. Controls

3 To start the engine
i The indicator and warning lamps light up
on the instrument cluster when you switch
on the ignition. They go out when the
engine is running. This shows that the indi-
cator and warning lamps for each system
are operational. i
You can only remove the key if:
R the key is in position 0in the ignition lock
R the automatic transmission selector
lever is in P Controls

Points to remember
For information about folding the rear bench
seat forward, see the "Luggage compartment
enlargement" section (Y page 141).G
Risk of injury
The seats can still be adjusted when there
is no key in the ignition lock. For this rea-
son, children should never be left unsuper-
vised in the vehicle. They could become
trapped when adjusting a seat. G
Risk of accident
Only adjust the driver's seat when the vehi-
cle is stationary. You will otherwise be dis-
tracted from the road and traffic conditions
and you could lose control of the vehicle as
a result of the seat moving. This could
cause an accident. G
Risk of injury
Make sure that nobody can become trap-
ped when you adjust the seat.
Observe the notes concerning the airbag
system.
Secure children as recommended; see
"Children in the vehicle" section. !
When you move the seats, make sure that
there are no objects in the footwell or
behind the seats. Otherwise, you could
damage the seats and the objects.
! Make sure that the sun visor is folded up
before setting the backrest angle and head
restraint height. Otherwise, the head
restraint and sun visor could collide when
the head restraint is fully extended.
i If the front door is open, the seats can be
adjusted for up 30 minutes after the igni-
tion has been switched off.
i The rear-compartment head restraints
can be removed (Y page 62).

sole is folded down. Otherwise, you could

Seat cushion angle Adjust the angle so that your thighs are gently
supported.

Head restraint height G
Risk of injury
Make sure that the central area of the head
restraint supports the back of your head at
about eye level. You could seriously injure
your neck if your head is not correctly sup-
ported by the head restraint in the event of
an accident. Never travel without a cor-
rectly adjusted and engaged head restraint. X
Slide the button up or down in the direction
of arrow 1.
Head restraint angle X
Sit on the seat.
X Using both hands, reach backwards and
grasp the sides of the head restraint.
X Adjust the head restraint angle. Pull the
bottom of the head restraint forwards or

Risk of injury
Occupants should only travel sitting on
seats which have the head restraints instal-
led. This reduces the risk of injury to the
passengers in the rear in the event of an
accident. Fitting and removing the front head
restraints The buttons are located on the door control
panel.

X Turn the key to position 1in the ignition
lock or open the door.
X Tilt the backrest back slightly, to make it
easier to remove and fit the headrests.
X To remove: slide button1upwards until
the head restraint is fully extended.
X Pull the head restraint up and remove it.
X To refit: slide button 1upwards for five
